I had the TYCO version of this set called “The Big Detour” in 1979 with the Jam Car. I was 11 years old and remembered the set came with a scrub pad that you had to use to clean the track contacts. It was a constant job to maintain! 😖😖
Fellow child of the 70s here...thank you very much for sharing this video! This really brought back a lot of memories of a simpler time when beating my buddies on their TCR set was the highlight of my day. My best friend got one of these for Xmas and we'd go out sledding or shoveling snow until we couldn't feel our fingers and then come inside for cocoa and TCR. These TCR sets were really next level. Slotted sets got boring very quickly. The TCR sets with the jam car and the ability to change lanes just really added an element of strategy and style that AFX and Tyco and the other slotted sets just couldn't touch. Thanks again, Wolf.
I know this video is 4 years old, but it happened to pop up in my feed. My dad bought this set for me and my brother for Christmas when we were kids. We were poor and didn't get a lot of toys other than Christmas and birthdays. We used to play with it for hours. We learned to fix them the best we could to keep it running. Funny thing is, I still have it my attic. Never had kids to pass it to, so I kept it all these years. Good memories.
Luv that set! I remember a "Friend" that would by a Set and and return it because it wasnt "Workin" each time hed keep some cars and track after 10 returns he had enough track to take up the entire basement. 5 power packs in the same track. We had to build Guard Rails to keep the cars from flyin off! Alota Fun! 😁👍🏻
I was born in 77 but 100% remember these! Friends and stuff would have them. Was fascinated with slot car. Got an old 60's book from the library about slot cars and my parents took me to the only local slot car/hobby shop and I got a "real" slot car and raced it when ever they'd take me.
Turbo hoppers and areo hoppers bandits turbo trains smokey and bandit dukes of Hazzard classy classic collection us1 trucking . I had about $3 g in cars and parts alone in a tackle box. Glow in dark tires and neon tires. Even today have at least 60 cars and fixer uppers
My brother and I got that set for Christmas and had fun with it but the older AFX slot set was much more reliable. The trucks seemed to stall between the lanes
I just picked up a set from '77 at a garage sale, $30!! Everything seems to be a good condition, but will definitely clean it all up.. ordered new front and back tires, shoes, other parts for the cars from Slot Car Central in Syracuse.. great place to get old TCR parts! Can't wait to get racing again after all these years!!
I had so many. My aunt bf stole them from me. She told me she would help me get them back. But some were my brother's. He gave them to me. He passed 10 yrs ago. You can't replace them!
Wow such memories!! I had the set with the ambulance van ran on its own and the two cars had to drive around it. TCR wow with the trucks and had two 1940 Ford Coupe and a Police car and Ambulance..1976 or 77.
Maan u had the bomb. I remember your set up but i think the last and ultimate commercials on tv and the ultimate were these trucks. They made those last commercials so dramatic.. us kids went crazy over it.. Especially with tv shows like BJ n the Bear, Convoy and other Trucker movies. Im a truck driver now lol .. 4yrs in.. almost slipped my mind
I had the same set! I remember one truck was black with flames, the tiny rubber wheel on each truck that controlled the lane changing got worn out eventually and we could not get parts here in Australia
We had alot of fun with these. The CC track was great cause used the CC cars and the tyco tcr..Clean track with 220 grit n wd.Wipe excess oil when done.Does wonders..The CC cars have larger white plastic gear in back know to crack.U can take thin aluminum tape cut n wrap the gear and u get alot more life out of them.Have fun
Pure gold I remember I got one of these for Christmas and then my mother‘s friend worked for the company and got me two more tracks , so we are able to make one gigantic racing track, it was epic ,, 1979 I believe.
Don't understand how TCR 'went away'. I had a set in my 20s and we'd get drunk and race, "bashin' for cash" as the great Willie T Ribbs once said. It was a hoot! We'd laugh until we were crying! Best ever!
My lil brother and I had a TCR set back in the late 70's. The cars we had were a BMW, and A Porsche with a Chevy Jam Car. Later on, my brother picked up the White Semi like the one in the video and a Chevy Van. I still have the White Semi and parts of the the Porsche and Van. Track and controllers were trashed a, l-o-n-g time ago. ☹️
I had this track, trucks, and jam car as a kid! Thank you so much for getting that one running again! This was so fun to watch! And for the record, I can almost smell those trucks, haha!
Thank you so much for this video. When I was a kid I always wanted a TCR race track. At the time they were more expensive than the other slot car tracks so my mom would always buy the other ones and I don’t remember the names. But thank you for this video this brings back good memories. By watching this video I think I’m gonna go to eBay and see what they go for.
Used to run a straight section of track then pour rubbing alcohol at the start, light it and did fire burnouts. Brother and I had good times. 82 was good
Got this for Christmas in 1978 but one of the trucks didn't work. Parents returned it and got the Vans instead. One of my favorite toys growing up. That and the Vertibird!

I had the set, I think it was called "Big Detour". It had the same basic set-up, but the track had a one lane "Detour" making the regular turn, plus the one right hand, almost offramp looking Detour Lane. The Trucks were the same with different color scheme. The Jam Car, was an Ambulance. As you can imagine, the Jam Car would be in the way, and you could Detour taking the offramp. It was a farther distance, but faster than following the Jam Car. The Commercials were Epic!
So many memories I had so much track and so many cars and I basically ran it until it really didn’t work anymore. The cars would get stuck but I loved it while it worked and I always wondered why it disappeared and then I remembered. I remember taking a penny and going around the track and cleaning a little wires so I made sure I had a good contact with my car’s.
Cool video. I had one of these back in the day. Not this one with the trucks though. I want to say they may have had headlights or glowed or something, too long ago. I do remember going to K-Mart with my allowance many times to get more track when I could afford it. Had quite the set up after awhile. Guess it ended up in a garage sale along the way. Wish I had kept it.
This was good for children learning about disappointment how to problem solve, going through highs and lows! Have some of the very earliest that my gramps picked up at a garage sale and gave me nearly 40 years ago 😮😅
Had one similar but with a couple highway signs and you can back the truck up and it would collect little babies and go drop them off at another place and another one scooped little plastic logs into the back of the truck my father got it for me 1979 I was 3 years old best thing I ever had
we used to get a bit of selotape and some sandpaper and tape it to the back of the cars with a little weight to clean the tracks, probably wasn't the best thing to do thinking about it now, lol
i got one for xmas as a kid i loved it but since i was an only child and no dad there wasn't anymore to play with it so i threw it in the garbage..i remember the one car glowed in the dark. it was Kool passing the jam car nut soon was bored probably better with two peeps
I had a Star Wars set like this. Same track, but the cars were futuristic looking and had color schemes like an xwing and a tie fighter. Best part was the car bodies were spring loaded and would fly off if rear-ended. The object was to get behind your opponent and crash into them to pop their body off.
Yeah.. what it steal that was. U and the seller probably knows it. And u got them things running good as new lol.. i can tell after u serviced em and they sped up so much. I was the same, I once played on TCR in the last week of junior school and I pestered for tcr at Christmas but got scalextric , though my cars did have working headlights.
Ho how you posh kids lived. We couldn’t afford scalextric or a TCR, I got a cheap unbranded one. I used to buy pickup kits as a kid and change the those parts.
I remember it well having used afx slot cars for years...when the ad on tv came out for"total control racing"...slotless cars!!...as a kid i couldnt figure out how they worked.I thought they were so cool but I was 10 by then and I wanted stereo equipment for christmas so I stopped using slot cars..
That’s so cool! Born in 77 but never seen that before much to my disappointment!🤣🤣🤣In the late 80’s I knew someone who had a slot car set that had 2 yellow “Ryder” semi-trailers that I loved growing up! Sadly, living in Australia sometimes had its downfalls! Now everything’s available by clicking a button, still buying toys at 46 though!👌🏻👍🏻🥃🗣💨💨🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Nice set, brings back fond memories, saving up my pocket money and birthday money to buy my first scalextric 400 set around the same time this TCR set was in the stores! I was always curious how the TCR system worked. 👍😎
@@hpt08 Not sure how much the TCR set was but I paid £44 for my Scalextric 400 set in around 1978/79, took me ages saving up my pocket money and birthday money etc 😯😊
Got one of these for my birthday in '78 or '79. My older (by 15yrs) brother & dad got drunk & destroyed before I even got a chance. But I do remember it being fairly lame.
I had a set as a kid then in 2000 I found a mint, unopened box and bought it. The tires had dry rotted. What I did was find some rubber vacuum line hose that was closest the the original diameter. Cut to the proper width but here's the trick, those tires are supposed to have a greater diameter on the outside than the inside. This will make the lane change quicker also. So I put the tire on a drill & drill bit large enough to keep it from slipping then run the drill and use a sand paper on a sanding block on an angle to the rotating tire and after a bit you'll have a tire with a larger outside diameter & smaller inner just like the originals. I think the cars running slower is more realistic & when you let off the trigger they coast.
Me and brother had a TCR track back in the early 80's but the box had race cars on it but inside the box were a white rig truck and a blue one. I was highly pissed about that because the package cover had if my memory serves me correctly a Group 5 Martini Porsche and a BMW!!!!
Got TCR in the late 70's for Christmas, played with it so much the transformer would overheat and cut off the supply to the track. I can remember the overtaking was rubbish and the outside track was faster than the inside track.
I had TYCO/AFX tracks. A few of them. I had always wanted a TCR track but my Dad and Mom said, we got you all of those sets of TYCO tracks, were not getting you another one that's completely different. It stunk but I now see their point. I didn't back then however.
When me an my brother were kids we would put match striker paper on the track an a match attached to the car an pour lighter fluid on the track long story short we had fun but damn near burnt are house down couple times
My older brother and I recieved that for Christmas, actually it was one of the gifts we got to open on Christmas Eve....I miss my childhood....
had it. loved it.. child of the 70's.. and thank God
Thanks for watching,Mark.
Not wrong there pal …what a great time to be a kid

Got one of these for my birthday in '78 or '79. My older (by 15yrs) brother & dad got drunk & destroyed before I even got a chance. But I do remember it being fairly lame.
Had that EXACT one 🤠 it was AWESOME
thanks for watching
I had the exact same set, after about 20 days mine shut down lol, man I wish I had another one
But...did you enjoy it.
@@Howlinwolfreviews I did. I also wish it had a jam car.
Got TCR in the late 70's for Christmas, played with it so much the transformer would overheat and cut off the supply to the track.
I can remember the overtaking was rubbish and the outside track was faster than the inside track.
Agree about the outside lane.
Had this same set, lot of good memories, are parts available for this??
It took me a quick search and i found tires immediately.
I miss mine, wish someone would remake them.
I had one but not the TCR Tyco slotless but it was a BMW and a Corvette and a police car for the jammer.
I had TYCO/AFX tracks. A few of them. I had always wanted a TCR track but my Dad and Mom said, we got you all of those sets of TYCO tracks, were not getting you another one that's completely different. It stunk but I now see their point. I didn't back then however.
We have a different perspective as we become Adults.
When me an my brother were kids we would put match striker paper on the track an a match attached to the car an pour lighter fluid on the track long story short we had fun but damn near burnt are house down couple times
that would be a fun video.
