Hi, I hope part two lived up to expectation, I'm working on part 3 of this fascinating rail adventure where we leave the gorge and set off towards the distant shape of Mount Taranaki, a volcano that dominates the skyline for last part of the trip.
Hi, it is my pleasure to be able to take you on these virtual video adventures to places rarely featured on regular television. I always value comments from people, and I always try to answer as many as possible. Take care and I hope you are keeping well is these difficult times. Tim.
Wees voorzichtig. Tim. Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, these converted golf carts are fun to drive. A Unimog is bigger than a golf cart, maybe too big for 1,067 mm ( 3 ft 6 in ) gauge tracks, although it could probably be converted to run on standard gauge 1,435 mm ( 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in ). Take care. Tim.
Thank you I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. The line is 144kms of which the carts cover about 136kms. Please click on this link for a little more information - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratford%E2%80%93Okahukura_Line
Goats are often Military Mascots, why not a Mayor in recognition of their tireless efforts to keep the grass on village green neat and tidy. Whangamomona is my happy place, a bit wacky, with a character that sums up the Forgotten World and the burgers from the Hotel are pretty tasty too. It's worth exploring.
Hello Bill, you are right I did upload a version of this video in 2014, since then editing software has improved, as has my ability to use it, giving me a chance to rework the original, including clips that were too shaky to include originally. Also the pandemic has limited my options for shooting new stuff.
Hi Tim! Beautiful landscape. Just beautiful. How long has this route been closed to public rail traffic? And something else, was the route sold to private operators? It should have been a while, because some trees protrude so close to the track. Cheers Tim 🍻
Hello Hans, the only traffic now is the rail carts, a serious derailment a few years ago caused about 8 kms of the track to be damaged, leading KiwiRail to make a decision to route the existing freight trains via a different route. The railway is still owned by KiwiRail who might decide to reopen it at some future date, it also provides an alternative route for the Auckland to Wellington mainline, should one of the nearby volcanoes erupt seriously damaging the mainline. Please click on this link to learn a little more - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratford%E2%80%93Okahukura_Line Take care. Tim.
Hi, the only traffic on the line is the rail carts, although the line is retained to provide an alternative route should the main line between Auckland and Wellington suffer catastrophic damage as a result of one of the nearby volcanoes erupting. There is talk of reopening part of the line to milk traffic, at the moment it's only a proposal, in the meantime these rail carts are making good use of a wonderful asset.
Does the golf cart battery last the hole trip or do u swap em out It’s an amazing thing u have done it brings back so many memories for this expat who used to live in that area👍😎
Hi Terry, the carts are fitted with petrol engines that have start/stop technology, hence why they are quiet when the carts are stationary. There are also peddle versions for the more energetic among us. I'm glad it bought back memories, good ones I hope, it is a beautiful part of the world 😊
From the land and the place (almost new plymouth that is) living in oz now only ever been on this road once in my life time about 50 years ago never on the rail thou very different back then what I can remember of it
Hello Bruce, this is close to my all time favourite rail experience. There were probably more people around when you last visited the area, most of the farms and out buildings are wrecks now. The middle 20 or so kilometres of the forgotten Highway is still gravel and the high ferns make the whole area feel like something from the juristic period, only the dinosaurs are missing.
Hi Robert, up until the line closed it was used by the Auckland to New Plymouth daily freight train, now routed via the North Island Main Trunk railway and the Palmerston North to New Plymouth line, apart from that there was a daily passenger train from Taumarunui to New Plymouth along with a daily pickup freight, both of which finished long before the line closed - Please click on this link for more details - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratford%E2%80%93Okahukura_Line
Were you in the last position? I always found that position to the best for exploring because you are always being pushed by the people behind you, giving you more time to film or look, or converse with your mates. I'd love this trip, but I'll never be able to take it.
Hi, "yes" I was the last person, giving me the option to drop back or stop to take photograghs. Kiwis have a great attitude, rules are for guidance only, they knew I'd catch up eventually. It's certainly one my favourite rail experiences.
I would love to see these rail-carts running between Blaenau Ffestiniog to Trawsfynydd in Wales. Sadly British health and safety regulations coupled with all the bureaucratic nonsense would kill it before it ever got off the ground. I'm sure people could name a few more lines around the country where these carts could run. There are also pedal powered versions on this line and on several other lines around the world.
Cheers, that's nice to know. Modern Sci Fi isn't in the same league as Star Trek, spaceship internal doors just don't make the right noise as they open and close on modern incarnations of the Starship Enterprise. If people could time travel I wonder if they'd end up in a place that looked like the forgotten world?
Thoroughly enjoyed part one. Fully anticipate enjoying part two just as much.

@@Timsvideochannel1 It did.
New Zealand from your videos appears to be quiet and peaceful.🐄🐄🏞️🏞️
There aren't many people in New Zealand. It is a very laid back, relaxing country although the birds and cicadas make plenty of noise.
Thank you for answering me as you did for others.
I really appreciate that.
It's always good to hear from you :-)

Yep! I'll be looking out for Part 3!
Hello Neil, this is a relaxing trip, no need to wear a seatbelt for this one, I'm working on Part 3 at the moment.
@@Timsvideochannel1 That's good! I've still got to replace the last one that broke with one of your speed jobs! LOL
@@neilforbes416 LOL take care :-)
I haven't forgotten. Whangamomona is one place I wish to explore, after all, any town that votes for a goat to be mayor just has to be special.

That was lovely. thanks. The track looks well ballasted and in fairly good condition, is it still used for other purposes?

Sorry I can't help you there, although I believe they come from the USA.
Can you imagine this being allowed on Britain's railways!!?? 😱😆
