Well, they didn't really get ripped off...there was no "contents worth at least 980 yen disclaimer"...they bought a mystery box and it sucked...that's not really being ripped off.
Some vending machines are setup to give free drinks during disasters like earthquakes. Maybe the company, or the guy who set up the vending machine, decided to put food for that case, and have it overpriced as a side effect for tourists or people who want to know what's in the box

Hehe, I know that sketchy vending machine corner. It's near the hotel I stay at sometimes when I visit japan. I tried one on the mystery boxes one time and wound up with several boxes of kitkat taped together. Just like you got.
The signs and decor give that place a really sketchy feel.
Regardless of what you got from the mystery vending machines, you guys are great and you make me want to try a mystery vending machine. Thank you for posting and sharing your videos, they're all GREAT!!!!

Are you sure those vending machines aren't owned by Barnum's heirs??? By the way, there is some dispute about whether or not Barnum actually said that. So, here's a similar quote by him: "Nobody ever lost a dollar by underestimating the taste of the...public." (He actually said American public, but I think his sentiment is applicable to the entire human race.)
I always love watching your videos I was curious to know what it looks like at all the different ¥100 stores or can you guys do a video on a very cheap or inexpensive way to enjoy Japan I would love to go back one day but it's soo expensive how can you enjoy a trip to Japan without spending so much love to know your thoughts can't wait to see another video 😄

yaaay another vending machiche video, never can get enough *^* lol those misterypacks are strange, thank you so much for buying them to show us XD I think at least you don't waste too much money when you think like how much the items costs out of a vending machine (oh btw, the matcha kitkat in the ordinary plastik bag like from supermarkets with 12 mini pieces costs here around 900¥, of cours because they are imported but anyway it's so expensive to be addicted by every single matcha item XD )
Oh and I did had some time ago an (cold) corn soup from Japan also out of a can like your mom and I got addicted too ooooh the taste is soooo good, can't imagine how delicious it is homemeade. It took me a really long time to try it out because I thought it's boring, a corn soup, well thats nothing special and I can buy corn even here. But haha I was soo wrong, want to try now everything with this corn soup taste or even cook some myself.

I've been to Japan twice and had wonderful times. I drank way too much coffee because I can't resist the vending machines.
Thank you for doing this for us even though you got ripped off! I felt annoyed for you that it was only cheap chocolate, but I really enjoy all your vending machine videos so still would love to see more 😂! There are a few that are a bit less rip off than the one you tried, some where you get a chance to win electronics (for about ¥1000 a go), and 'mystery gatcha' machines where you can win electronics or other high value items, where the worst prize still seems better than a box of chocolates. Perhaps you would be willing to sacrifice a small amount of your hard earned cash again for another fun video again one day? At least Satoshi had a great attitude about it! 😁

Gents, in the south Eastern US, you just bought what we call a 'pig in a poke'. A completely superfluous item for a monstrously high price. Although I must say it was educational to know what was in said boxes to be able to impart knowledge to other. :D

I think the entertainment value is the whole point of the mystery box. You can't really expect to get something valued higher than the price.....the makers would not make any money and that is the entire point to them. So you go for the fun of doing it.....even though it's fleeting. Like the games at the fair....you're never going to win but it's fun to try.
So there was no gift certificate inside the kitkat box ? You did not show if it was only chocolate :-o

Only in Japan uploaded a video several months ago about the King's Treasure Box machines in Tokyo, and those were WAAAY better than these ones. I wish you would have had better luck with your boxes!!
my understanding from one of john daub's videos is that it can also be a matter of luck with those type of vending machines? there's a selection of items specific to each price point and for each of them you can end up on something kinda disappointing but you could also end up with something worth more than what you paid.

i think machines like this could catch on in America easy like imagine a taco or burrito vending machine or a machine thats filled with what ever food is popular in that area i think if malls had these they would do well

Oh man, if I knew about these when I was in Akihabara two days ago, I definitely would have tried them.
I know the mystery boxes were a let-down, but it was a lot of fun discovering what they were!

But that positive attitude makes me feel like maybe he's right, it provided us with almost 5 mins of entertainment. If 3700 people have seen this then its 5 minutes times 3700 which I would say may be worth it for 8$
