It's been too long since I covered a wild little racing game, so here goes! Took a bit longer than usual on this one so I hope it was worth the wait! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!
I never played the flat out games but the same studio Bugbear made Wreckfest and it’s by far one of my of my favorite games and it has those soft body mechanics and makes the destruction pretty realistic. I even did a video essay of it. And I’m excited for Wreckfest 2 coming our way
@jamesboane4515 they figured it out literal decades ago. If anything, it would be easier than ever. The real reason is that they're cowards who won't just use fictional car models, and the car brands don't want their products able to be damaged.
we still have beamng on the simulation side of things hopefully Wreckcreation's development goes smoothly and it doesn't end up being another Dangerous Driving, it's the last hope I have of a Burnout sequel
"I Was Just Wondering If You Wanted to Hang Out With Me and Smoke Weed and Fill Our Bellies With Diet Soda and Play "Burnout Revenge" for the PS2." Wait wrong game.
I always felt like i must have accidently universe hopped into one where no one played flatout 2, because despite it being the best racing game ever made, nobody ever talks about it. Very good video. I hope more people try it out. The first time your car ever flies through the air at 100 miles an hour, does 6 backflips and then slams into the ground in first place, thats when youll truly understand how beautiful this game is.
I think it's because its spotlight got eaten by Burnout, and the tragic event that was Flatout 3, kinda clouded its name in people's memories. Honestly, I have a real hard time picking between Flatout 2 and Burnout 3.
The amount of times music synced up with car crashes in my playthroughs of original Flatout 2 was absolutely terrific, the soundtrack was just built for that. Like, when I first played it back in 2010’s and got to the racetrack map, I jumped the ramp the wrong way and my Lentus (I don’t remember the class or a car I was in, but something close to that) started doing the fastest cartwheeling I had ever seen, meanwhile Man or Animal’s first chorus got to an end and Audioslave started screaming “out of control!!!” while drums were rolling as if the car was just doing that - man, this is when I realised that I love this game and I needed to ask my parents for more Hot Wheels to beat into each other. That and Dirt 2 is pretty much why I started loving racing games as a whole and still replaying them on some special occasions to this day, and I’m so happy that you covered it in your style (adore the 3D animated Road King segments and all the bits, comparing the sense of speed to the Yellowline from “Redline” was so good). Apologies for longwinded comment, this is my first time commenting on anything and English is my second language. Thought it was too good of a memory to pass up. Love all of your works and branching out to video game things is really informative and uniquely done, wish you all the best in your future stuff! Also, same devs made Wreckfest, and I can’t even begin to describe on how great that game is, everybody check it out if you haven’t.
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! Flatout really can facilitate those special moments, it's not the only game that can do that by all means but nothing just hits that specific combination! Nothing wrong with your English as far as I can tell! Cheers!
Just woke up and I appreciate your response! Honestly the closest I got to scratching that itch in different games was Yakuza franchise, specifically their spinoffs Judgment and Lost Judgment with unintentionally timing punches, kicks, bicycles and heat actions to all kinds genres of tracks (including orchestra from what I can remember) being the constant thing happening to me. I might as well upload one of the clips on to my channel for anybody to see for themselves. Again, thank you for making this video, take your time proper for the next ones!
@possibly_ben Would love to play it, I only listened to the soundtrack which is from what I’ve heard and seen actually dynamically changes depending on your position in the race or if it’s the last lap or not, kinda like Payday, but non-linearly. Planning to get it on PS3 and maybe even play it on the emulator with Xtra mod which adds a bunch of cut content and supposedly adds an option to remove Mexico filter.
Because game devs think they NEED to have real cars in their games. And the manufacturers who make those real cars are sensitive little snowflakes who dislike their cars getting destroyed on screen
I love the change in content. You have a pleasant voice, the adding your own animation to a documentary-style video is fresh to say the least, and I like the niche topics you choose for your videos.
I swear, you are one of those rare creators where I would watch you talk about ANYTHING in a video. I dont give a fuck about racing games, do when youre talking about em though
Fun fact, there probably was a story to this game, the character bios use to be very very long explaining everything and the fact that Jack Benton is hated by everyone
Tbh there also just aren't that many Jerma moments that necessitate an animated version, it can be quite hard to pick the right one sometimes! Thank you!
@Corax don't get me wrong, your Jerma animations are expressive and enjoyable in a way that's hard to articulate, outside of just watching them. But I'm glad that you are pursuing a style of content and creative outlet that is (hopefully) more personally satisfying for you. I'm excited to see all the Jerma animations you make, but I'm 100% here for your other works. You're trying new things and I hope it pays off!
On my 10th birthday, I got Flatout 2 as a birthday gift, and it was a huge breakthrough in my adolescence, because in my father's words, it was my "first game where I could [unaIive] people." I didn't get my first rated-M game until I was already in high school. Lol

Ah, a 10-minute video of a random guy covering his hyperfixation in a game genre I care little about. My compliments to the chef. :) Such love in a subject I will usually look over. What’s more human than that? Also slamming cars together in game engine big fun :3
Dude I love Corax' way of speaking, like he has this kinda chill and raspy voice but over every video he lets himself be more and more unhinged, and at this point his forms of speech are creepily similar to mine (like the foxy becomes active on the second night or Stacy's mom lines are spot on)
This game is the embodiment of pure testosterone, with cool cars, crazy crashes, incredible sense of speed and *oh b o i* the music is a certified classic, without a doubt an 11/10, great video mate, love the animation!
Corax all your 3d and 2d animated sketches are so wonderful. In all your review videos they always catch me off guard and make me so happy to see that i rewind to see them once or twice more. Your production effort is not lost!!! And its very appreciated!!!!
I was just thinking about this game the other day while describing it to a friend at the gym. Naturally, I instinctively checked your channel-and, of course, you had uploaded a video about it the day before. It's like you always know exactly what I'm thinking
i have a very vivid memory of being 9 years old playing the "Throw the guy mode" where its this big ramp and you hit the different cards. definitely one of the best childhood memories
So glad to see this get some love. I even adore the original flatout series. It's definitely a lot less high fuel high octane but it gives that perfect feeling of down home Derby racing
I cannot describe the fun that I had in this game! I remember wanting there to be an open world back in the day. Even though it wasn't I still played the crap out of it as it was the only racing game that felt rewarding by just ramming into opponents or launching yourself out of the car to do a stunt. (Edit): Corax, I got the game on steam because of your inspirational review. Hope life is treating you well!
oh my gosh, i wasnt expecting flatout2 when i clicked on this video!! I have vivid memories of the stunt mode, re-trying that one where you go down a huge slope, and I presume crash your guy into some spot to score pointz. The soccer I also remember. The derbies, oooh yeah. Thanks for making me remember another game from my childhood. Well made video of course
It surprised me to see Corax act more in this video. Feeling like someone else inside the story rather than the analytical spectator from outside. It can tell us how deep he cared for the game back then and how much he is enjoying himself by making this video. I won't ask you to keep playing a character from now on, but please, keep having this much fun. There's nothing better than seeing people enjoy their craft.
Really glad the energy came through, I wanted to match the vibe of the game with the pacing, jokes, etc. and it was quite fun to make! Very happy it made an impression, cheers!
I played Flatout one as a kid and loved it and 100% it, I always wanted to play the 2 but never owned it, but with seeing more people talking about it and praise it it makes me wanting to play it more and more before than asap
This game, as well as pretty much every racing game from that era, is directly responsible for both my love of cars and motorsports as well as my taste in music
This game is probably half my childhood man! My father had no idea what he had purated, but he had struck on gold with Flatout 2! He introduced me to the game at 5, and ever since, its been my favourite racing game, I don't think I've seen or played something better. Ooh nostalgia gets to me, I'M NOT CRYING, YOU ARE CRYING SOMETHING GOT IN MY EYE!!!😂😭😭
holy shit dude, I remember playing this ages ago! I started thinking it was a fever dream, since I couldn't find what game I was remembering. Man, what a way to take me back
You were the last person I thought you would make a video about one of my favorite games of all time, but it's still nice to know someone shares my love for FlatOut 2 (and Road King)
I could already tell from the car in the thumbnail what game this was and I cannot believe it's taken *this* long for someone to make a video about my all time favorite racing game, it just strikes that perfect balance between arcade and realism in a racing game that has an insane amount of destruction without sacrificing the adrenaline speed you get from holding down that nitro
Excellent video sir. Burnout 3 is my favorite racing game of all time but this is probably the first time I've seen anything about flatout other than the driver being thrown out, so I didn't realize the actual racing would be so tempting. I'll have to give it a shot sometime.
YES FLATOUT 2 HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE RACING GAME WITHOUT QUESTION!!! Sorry, I'm just REALLY elated to see you covering it! My father still has the OG CD somewhere!
You know, you are the last person I expected to do this format of video and absolutely kill it, the script is hilarious. I would unironically pay for this if I wasn't already barely scraping rent lol. Seriously though, the way you wrote this within the first 60 seconds has me realizing why video essay-ish things like these are so mundane and unexciting, it's because they all write the script the exact same way. It's almost cookie cutter. The only ones in recent memory to break this is Angry Video Game Nerd and, apparently, YOU. It's a joy to see this and the video itself is a joy to watch. Please keep making videos.
It's been too long since I covered a wild little racing game, so here goes! Took a bit longer than usual on this one so I hope it was worth the wait! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!
7:05 keep milking that money because I'm unironically enjoying these videos as I can feel the age in my bones...I'm so old

Thanks for giving this game some well deserved love
I never played the flat out games but the same studio Bugbear made Wreckfest and it’s by far one of my of my favorite games and it has those soft body mechanics and makes the destruction pretty realistic. I even did a video essay of it. And I’m excited for Wreckfest 2 coming our way

I knew you had a great taste, but I didn't knew it was this good. Based berd
YES! And I'm so happy to see Berd and Corax love this game I've played as a kid! I still listen to "Demon Speeding" !
The berd's here!
Racing games dropping soft body physics is one of the greatest tragedies in gaming history.
I mean, it is kinda difficult to maintain without knowing it fully
@jamesboane4515 and they wouldn't know it now more than ever?

This is the first time I've heard someone complain about the LACK of bloom and piss filter from that generation of games and tbh I welcome it.

It certainly scared the shit out of me. lol
The best part is, this game got a huge update back in summer and got workshop support along with a few other things. Such a blast with friends

I really wonder why did racing games a focus on destruction and crashes died out, those were some of the most fun ones of them all
Because at some point it becomes boring
Car manufacturers are cowards and don't like their cars portrayed being folded in half so the devs get no licenses to use real cars :/
Because people are dumb and boring and don't like car crashes and explosions and car boom car zoom fast go skrrrrr 💥💥💥bckshoooom
@DemodiX It's okay to be wrong from time to time.
Because game devs think they NEED to have real cars in their games. And the manufacturers who make those real cars are sensitive little snowflakes who dislike their cars getting destroyed on screen

I still have a long way to go but I did try to actively improve the pacing here so I'm glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Oh god. I've spent countless hours in this game! And I even tried to play it with a wheel controller (which is really fun). Thank you for the video!
“Oh boy I wonder what the most played part is.”
…
*leans into the mic* “Oh.”
