Lego Universe was and always will be a source of nostalgic joy for me! Hearing you mention it brought a big smile on my face! If only it lasted a bit longer…
Dude, this is excellent. You really have a talent for this more long form type of video. I really hope that you put out more of this. I think your background in high-quality animation really sets you apart from other big players in the gaming video-essay space. I hope that you really use that to your advantage going forward to further make this format of video your own (the bit showing how your old disks ended up getting destroyed in animation sticks out particularly to me). I know that the animation is likely the most time consuming part of the process, but I think that I speak for most of us when I say that your animation style is truly special and adds so much to your content. I'm proud to be a subscriber and I hope you find a lot of success with this.
7:50 I see an opportunity for a deep rock galactic meme, but I didnt get one... But, really love the video essay format done this way, hope to see more like this in a future!
One of my favorite lego games when I was a kid was lego ninjago for the ds. It was an rts that must have been really easy considering i beat it as a kid. It was such a fun game with cool levels and secret collectables hidden in the levels. It gives me such nostalgia. I remember trying and failing to 100 percent It as a kid lol. The reason that game is so easy is that enemies don't actively attack you, i think, unless you played king of the hill, so you could just spend x amount of time building up units. I found it so fun.
My first lego game that got me really into Age of empires and starcraft was a weird little DS RTS lego game called lego battles. Was a really cool game
Rock Raiders was also my first exposure to RTS I'm pretty sure. Although it plays much more like the modern "colony sim" genre which as far as i know didnt exist much at the time.
The AI in Manic Miners, I'm pleased to say, is MUCH better about following orders. Plus you can manually finish a ton more tasks now yourself. Also, it's worth mentioning that part of the reason the other LEGO Island games didn't capture the spirit of the first one because Mindscape, the development studio, had the 'genius' idea of -laying off all the staff- right before they'd have to pay them royalties for their work. This is a particular shame as they actually had plans for a whole slew of LEGO games that never got made, including one involving the aquatic themes and pirates that has a brief teaser hidden in Island 1.
Lego Island 1 & 2, Lego Racers, Lego Loco, the Bionicle Mata Nui flash game... I spent SO many hours on these games as a kid. They really take me back to another time. I'm glad other people have lots of nostalgic memories for them too!
Who knew the funny Jerma cartoon guy would make a kickass video about the lego games history, ggs man ( not to discredit his usual works, guy makes crazy good animation )
This was hella entertaining, I always love how you add the little Lego animations in between of your character. W commentary, wouldn’t mind seeing more of these 😼✨
There was also Lego Indiana Jones 2 which had "super bonus levels" & even let you build your own levels. Yes, it did have the unfortunate fate of including the unpopular Crystal Skull movie, but still they were fun features
We used to own Lego Creator when I was a kid. I didn't play it very much, but I was impressed by how complex it seemed. It was pretty much just building legos but in digital form, plus you could do things like take control of characters and walk around, and you could control how different mechanical bits should work.
Man, I had Lego Island 2, Extreme Stunts, Alpha Team, and the soccer game as a kid. Honestly beautiful memories. I wasn’t quite old enough to play Lego island 1, but I think in hindsight, 2 was the better one so I don’t feel too bad about missing out.
@@theTOASTYsupreme yeah, especially after trying to get the first one to run nowadays. The system clock speed on modern hardware is jacked comparatively to when Lego Island 1 was released. At least with Lego Island 2 I could get it running after playing with previous DirectX versions. There is like a web browser version that you can play of the original though if you want to do that, but I’d like to run it off my PC if I could.
There also were some abandonwares you didn't mention, LEGO Fever and LEGO Builder Bots but I wouldn't blame you, I wouldn't know about them if I didn't play em as a kid.
I kinda like the direction of this channel. When I watched the SFM video I got hooked on Corax style of narration. I hope you make other cool projects like this in the future!
Ironic that you made this when you did, I had just bought Lego Star wars, the complete saga 12:04 and to think now we have things like a bricklink studio [the successor to Lego digital designer] which gives us access to every single brick in every single color
I can tell you put so much effort into this, and I love the animation! I've enjoyed many of the TT Lego games, but I also hope they branch out again. Also, you didn't mention Lego Battles. It wasn't an early game but still very different from your typical Lego game of the mid-late 2000s.
The animation youtuber - to - video essaist pipeline never gets old. but yeah the whiplash is insane, Bionicle Heroes and Lego Universe were my straight up favorite games but its a shame that Bionicle Heroes was never explored more, it seemed like the perfect blend between shooter and LegoTM game, but the auto-aim doesnt let it age too well
Getting a sponsor isn't necessary to prove your art has worth, but it is a form of greater recognition that you obviously deserve, congrats. And compared to other "Gamer" drinks, Gsupps is the only one I like (in flavor and efficacy), so I'm biased.
I think it's pretty cool of creators to just do whatever they want like this. I don't really care for MC's other content, but all power to him. It's just 'cause of my personal taste in videos. I DO care about Lego videogames however
There's something distinctly interesting about the late 90's and early 2000's lego games. They were all experimental but usually did what they set out to do well (Except for Lego Rock Raiders). A lot of non-lego games from the era were also extremely interesting to me, the likes of HotWheels Stunt Track Challenge for example, which were surprisingly advanced games for their time thanks to being on the PC. I think if there's one thing I appreciate about growing up the time I did, I think it has to be these unique opportunities I only experienced thanks to the early Windows gaming scene. Things you'll never see again like kids flocking to big dedicated and decorated stands just for Lego games. It's a unique and quite obsolete time in gaming but it was charming and to this day I go back to a lot of the titles, even as DVD ROMs go obsolete and scarce.
(I think I'm going to hide this in the comments since it's a bit personal) I don't think any title in gaming has been as meaningful to me as Lego Racers. My Father changed one day while I was growing up... He became angry, aggressive and by the time I was 14 I didn't recognize the man who had raised me. But for a time when I was much, much younger, I have so many memories of a good man. I used to play Lego Racers all day every day while he would man certain keys since I was literally too young to manage the items while I drove or vice-versa. While he had downtime at work, he would look at gaming forums and play the game in his free time. He used to come home every other day showing me some new thing he found or found out about. He had a particularly dry day at work and unlocked Veronica Voltage's kit and never told me how he did it. It was a time early in life where things were plainly good without stupid complications of later life and the older lego games contain some of the best isolated memories I've ever had. These games mean the world for me, and although they're not the best I've ever played, I think they're the games that mean the most to me.
You're sfm video actually got me into making animation, I am doing, okay, but you keep inspiring me to make them, and I can't really say I'm good at animating, but I have definitely gotten a lot better. Thank you Corax!
This was a pleasant surprise. I was even just thinking about some old Lego games recently and I agree that the old games had something going for them, at least in potential. Especially Rock Raiders. Never played it myself, just watched, but I really hope that Lego revisits it some day, even if just the genre itself. Lego star wars on the 360 might have been the first time that I genuinely loved a Lego game _(ah, the good old days of trying to play co-op with a Rockband drumset, cause we had one controller)--_ not that I didn't like any of the others, but as a kid, games like Lego island were appealing less because they were fun and more because of the charm, atmosphere, however you can describe it _(that and there wasn't much else that we had to play; also, my copy of Lego Island was also eaten by the optical drive_ :( I always like when animators do these kinds of videos, it adds a lot to it, I hope to see more!
4:15 Can confirm - Lego LOCO was the one classic Lego game I owned as a kid, but I spent so much time with it, mainly just building whacky train tracks and watching all the little vehicles and people walking around. It was my first exposure to a city building simulator, and along with being really into Legos at the time, I was also just really entranced by all the little animations and activity going on with every building and minifig pedestrian. Made my little custom towns feel alive in my young mind. It also helped that it was really easy to get into. Didn't have to deal with budgets or needing to build one thing to build another thing. You had all the tools at your disposal, which made me click with it. I would mainly grow up with the Traveler's Tales line of Lego games, at least up until Lego Indiana Jones 2, when my interest in Lego started to wane a bit. I did check out Skywalker Saga more recently, after Covid and an unexpected gift from my Dad rekindled my interest in building Lego sets. It was quite an experience seeing how much Skywalker Saga improved on the gameplay loop compared to what I remembered from the original Lego Star Wars games, and I had a lot of fun with it.
Holy shit this is an absolute win. Your animation is clean and gorgeous and this is the exact type of content I want to hear about. If you ever want to talk about the TT I’d be here as soon as. Also this vid is LEGO Battles erasure and I will not stand for it there’s your real hidden gem.
1:32 I was totally expecting your character to do the Lego Racers main menu animation when presenting the video title, but Lego Movie styled animation ft fingerprints and smudges are equally fun. Great watch!
7:08 I played Lego rock raiders a lot when I was a kid. The game had a system where you were able to name your workers/lego figures if you trained them and leveled them up. Naming 12 or so Lego dudes was the best choice I ever made back then. Stories started developing all on there own because of this. You had Ted who would constantly screw up everything and trip on spiders every opportunity he got, Bill who had the habit of carrying TNT to already destroyed sections of wall due to my poor commands. He tragically died in a mining accident when he blew himself up with said TNT. Lastly there was Bob. My go to guy for fixing the messes Bill and Ted would make. Bob died though when he got hit by 2 cave ins at the same time. So I ordered a lunch break in his memory and made another Bob. In my head it was Bob's son, Bob the second stepping in to fill his father's shoes. Somehow Bob the second was even more competent than Bob the first. He never died either because the disk became unstable and we couldn't run the game anymore. So technically he's still alive to this day on some dusty old save file. Lastly, to anyone who just got a hit of nostalgia and is off to download the game did you know that the laser beam can be used on lava monsters? It does a measly 2 damage per hit on something that has 200 or so health, but the animation the lava monster does when you shoot him is pretty funny. He'll get flung up in the air, do a triple backflip and land on his ass. This makes me think that the game was already finished, and the programmers put this in as an easter egg. Because combat wise the tactic is pointless. The freezer beam already stuns lava monsters with each hit.
When I was little, I had Lego Island, Lego Loco, Lego Racers, and Lego Chess. I didn't know how to play Chess, so I never really touched it. Lego Island was fun, but I only ever played the pizza delivery minigame, because I liked Pepper, and that's about it. Lego Racers was definitely my favorite of the bunch........ but I gotta say... I spent _SO MUCH TIME_ playing Lego Loco! Lego Loco might not be as "good" as Lego Racers, but the "make your own fun" sandbox served to make it really easy for me to spend hours upon hours in that game. Definitely my most-played Lego game. On a side note, I played with physical Lego Knights' Kingdom sets when I was little, but it was the second version of it (sometimes called Knights' Kingdom II). Knights' Kingdom II was my absolute favorite for Lego kits. And the story for that one would have made for a really good Lego RPG video game. I wish they did that!
Corax, you really read my mind on a lot of this. I've been severely disappointed that LEGO has almost completely abandoned their original IPs in favor of licensing deals. I grew up with LEGO Island, LEGO Racers, LEGOLAND, and Soccer Mania, and they're all very dear to me. Not to mention all of the flash games on their website! I feel this isn't just an issue with LEGO Media, though. Even the physical LEGO sets seem to lack much originality now. Most are based less on things you can actually play with, and more on models of cars and other static objects. While cool, the creativity and intellectual stimulation just seem lost now. I love that you put this video together. It's something I've been feeling for years at this point, but didn't really have anybody to tell. Hopefully we'll see some more original stuff from LEGO in the near future.
You continued to pass the vibe check as soon as you called Racers a banger. That menu theme is ingrained in my brain and sometimes I awake from slumber with it stuck in my head.
Man I used to spend all night thinking about Lego Universe or whatever that game was called. It was that one MMO that got shut down. I only ever got to play it once and then never again. I spent YEARS wondering about just what i was missing out on.
Something interesting about Rock Raiders, it also got a PS1 release but instead of it being a rts it became an action collection game when you directly control one of the main gang and collect energy crystals and save lost rock raiders on your way to the end of the level. Always baffled me as a kid, seeing two of the same game but with completely different gameplay
I think my favorite lego game would probably be lego city undercover or lego star wars. I remember being heart broken when my gamecube just stopped detecting the disc, But I did get the game later on an ipad. I wish lego did more original content, it worked so well with lego city undercover and I would love to see the story continued.
I had the original Lego Creator as a kid, along with Lego Loco. Can confirm that even when you got it to run, Lego Creator was buggy and prone to crashing out of nowhere. Lego Loco had a cool feature where if you did an “online” map you could send a train out and get a postcard back in response!
Lego Racers 2 and Bionicle the game were my early childhood Lego games though I really sucked in those as a kid, not being able to go past first or second island in Racers and having a lot of issues with platforming on the Tahu and Lewa levels in Bionicle. I can vividly remember struggling to clear an early section of platforming as Tahu where there was an area with flowing in lava rocks and a monster shooting at you, making it difficult to jump across those rocks. Later on I and my bestie played through most of the Tt games in coop which was hella fun. Kinda shame that there were really not enough Bionicle games and ones that came out were either smaller promo games or were not all that spectacular. Especially considering how huge and influential Bionicle series was to Lego back then. As a kid I really wished and still wish that there were more Bionicle games.
Lego Chess, Rock Raiders, Racers and Stunt Racers were among my favorite games as a kid. While RR was my favorite, I got so much mileage out of the other ones it's unreal. It helps that they are based off the 90's themes that I saw in catalogs when I was little.
Dang! I hope you revisit Creator with a virtual machine or somthing, it was my favorite game ever when I was a kid. I remember building airships I could control, a battleship with rotating turrets, everything could be automated and programmed, it was so great!
Drome Racers sure seems like it was suffering from the same identity crisis that LEGO was going through regarding Technic. They desperately wanted it to be the cooler older-kids version of LEGO, but the only way they could think of to chase that image was to sacrifice the all-ages charm that LEGO has in the first place. Realistic humans and textures next to even the more complex Technic elements was just never going to work. Meanwhile they finally managed to hit on something good with Bionicle and hamstrung it entirely by sticking to those same all-ages mandates like "we can't have our characters being too violent, so they aren't allowed to actually use the unique weapons they carry."
I think that Drome Racers is mroe based on Technic than the actual Racers theme, hence why the vehicles look so drastically different compared to the classic bricks.

Lego battles, born to late to be respected, and still to old to be relevant…. One day battles one day
This video feels like it was made by 2012 PBG and or JonTron. An immaculate job as always Corax.
Yeah I'm in the "hope they experiment again" phase too. Both with videogames and sets
Lego Universe was and always will be a source of nostalgic joy for me! Hearing you mention it brought a big smile on my face! If only it lasted a bit longer…
I was one of the beta testers for it... I fucking miss the races, the inventiveness, and the story of the world and potential therein
There has been a successful remake that got released a few years ago called Darkflame Universe, give it a gander/look
I never goit to play it because it never got released outside of NA and Europe for god knows what reason. Still mad about that.
20:58 Missed opportunity to say " A *wheel* shame"
^^^^the Nintendo ds Lego rts games were some of the best games I played as a kid!
honestly a Lego game that plays something like SIM city where you can design (and save/copy/paste) buildings and such seems like it'd be very popular
editing is fantastic. great video
In 20 years, Lego will be making a video about THIS period of experimentation by Corax.
Subbed for the funny 2D Jerma Animations
Now completely excited for more The Missed Potential of Old LEGO Games videos.
3:30 good to know they had their own transport tycoon rip-off that was released way later
content im fucking *here* for baby lets go
Who knew the funny Jerma cartoon guy would make a kickass video about the lego games history, ggs man
( not to discredit his usual works, guy makes crazy good animation )
This was hella entertaining, I always love how you add the little Lego animations in between of your character. W commentary, wouldn’t mind seeing more of these 😼✨
There was also Lego Indiana Jones 2 which had "super bonus levels" & even let you build your own levels. Yes, it did have the unfortunate fate of including the unpopular Crystal Skull movie, but still they were fun features
I was not expecting this kinda content from you but I'm glad you posted this, it was a fun watch.
6:08 for a second I heard "You can create your drunk driver"
We used to own Lego Creator when I was a kid. I didn't play it very much, but I was impressed by how complex it seemed. It was pretty much just building legos but in digital form, plus you could do things like take control of characters and walk around, and you could control how different mechanical bits should work.
Jeez Corax is like JonTron before he said he wanted to put all POC in a big witches cauldron
I am all here for Video essays AND animation. You killed it dude.
I like how this channel morphed into a primordial jontron channel
Man, I had Lego Island 2, Extreme Stunts, Alpha Team, and the soccer game as a kid. Honestly beautiful memories. I wasn’t quite old enough to play Lego island 1, but I think in hindsight, 2 was the better one so I don’t feel too bad about missing out.
Very cool, Vash ✌️
The 1st one was fun, but there definitely was a huge jump in quality to the 2nd one

Ironic that you made this when you did, I had just bought Lego Star wars, the complete saga
12:04 and to think now we have things like a bricklink studio [the successor to Lego digital designer] which gives us access to every single brick in every single color
I can tell you put so much effort into this, and I love the animation! I've enjoyed many of the TT Lego games, but I also hope they branch out again. Also, you didn't mention Lego Battles. It wasn't an early game but still very different from your typical Lego game of the mid-late 2000s.
Ah yes, the "Animator to Video Essay UA-camr" pipeline.
Joking aside I eat video essays up like candy so this is gonna be good I can already tell
I love the idea of Corax doing what MeatCanyon does, doing fun videos like this in between animations. I'm totally here for it.

(I think I'm going to hide this in the comments since it's a bit personal)
I don't think any title in gaming has been as meaningful to me as Lego Racers.
I had the Gameboy version of the Alpha Team game and I'm immensely surprised that it's basically the same game sans camera rotation and zoom
Never thought that Corax making a video that isn't an animation about Joey or jerma would be so entertaining/informative :)
I'm getting old school jontron vibes from this video and I'm absolutely loving it
Wait, a long form video from Corax? Gonna have to pay close attention to ensure this video gets the viewership it deserves!
I came here for the Jerma cartoons, like most other people I'm sure, but I want more videos like this one now
This was a pleasant surprise. I was even just thinking about some old Lego games recently and I agree that the old games had something going for them, at least in potential. Especially Rock Raiders. Never played it myself, just watched, but I really hope that Lego revisits it some day, even if just the genre itself. Lego star wars on the 360 might have been the first time that I genuinely loved a Lego game _(ah, the good old days of trying to play co-op with a Rockband drumset, cause we had one controller)--_ not that I didn't like any of the others, but as a kid, games like Lego island were appealing less because they were fun and more because of the charm, atmosphere, however you can describe it _(that and there wasn't much else that we had to play; also, my copy of Lego Island was also eaten by the optical drive_ :(
I always like when animators do these kinds of videos, it adds a lot to it, I hope to see more!
18:40 Look Tomar, it’s you
Corax is such a true Lego fan that he become what he loves, oh how I envy him.😺
lego creator was the first video game I had ever played, this was a nostalgia trip like no other
0:14 😂😂😂😂XD AAA
1:32 I was totally expecting your character to do the Lego Racers main menu animation when presenting the video title, but Lego Movie styled animation ft fingerprints and smudges are equally fun. Great watch!
>"This video is not for kids"
>Swears 3 times at most
And now..... LEGO FORTNITE
18:40 Look you, it's Tomar
The voice actor for Jonathan ablebody is well known in the UK. His name is Justin fletcher and I'm pretty sure he still voice acts to this day.
18:38 Look Tomar it's you!
12:45 this was way more elaborate than i thought you could do with that software, I LOVE IT
When I was little, I had Lego Island, Lego Loco, Lego Racers, and Lego Chess.
Him being born in 1998 means that some of his earlier animations were made in High School, definitely impressive.
You continued to pass the vibe check as soon as you called Racers a banger. That menu theme is ingrained in my brain and sometimes I awake from slumber with it stuck in my head.
Man
I used to spend all night thinking about Lego Universe or whatever that game was called. It was that one MMO that got shut down. I only ever got to play it once and then never again. I spent YEARS wondering about just what i was missing out on.
Excellent video. Glad to find someone who doesn't needlessly shit on Lego Racers 2.
I wish lego did more original content, it worked so well with lego city undercover and I would love to see the story continued.
i can tell squidward is your favorite
12:46 Okay this whole part with Cedric and Richard is great and also hilarious. Oh and that voice impression for Cedric is awesome!
Rock raiders was great, I loved the first person mode.
@@harry_ord People are still modding it to this day, it's crazy.
18:40 made me smile :)
The lego flash games were surprisingly solid as well. The Lego Mars game still goes so hard.
I think that Drome Racers is mroe based on Technic than the actual Racers theme, hence why the vehicles look so drastically different compared to the classic bricks.
