Forgotten to mention: The link between Tarly-Hightower: Samantha Tarly-Hightower is one of the most interesting networkers during the aftermath of the Dance. Her network included Alyn Velaryon, Lotho Rogare and as Stepmother-in-law Rhaena Targaryen - and her 6 daughters that form the 'proper' female line of Rhaenys-the-Queen-that-never-was. I imagine her as some sort of Queen of Thorns in the end.
Marrying those six girls off 'unnoticed' was most likely their main project. Who ever married the eldest of those six Hightower-girls could say: hey, I'm married to the 'true' queen. I imagine Samantha saw to, that 'honour' would go to her own family, but I somehow expect, that House Martell would be the one most interested. - There must be a reason the Targaryens 'watered' their dragonblood down with Martells and Daynes.
House Hightower and Dayne badly needed those girls to keep their Valyrian looks. - But for any reason I almost expect the eldest flew off with some Lord Crane... - and 'our' Sam will turn out to be the true 'king-that-never-was'.

I like to think that Bran the Builder is actually the evolution of what used to be "Bran's Builder's". The Builders are one of the 3 Orders of the Night's Watch. So, there used to be a lord commander called Bran Stark, who built the wall, and when the Night's Watch was still plentiful, sent his Builders out into the kingdoms to Earn money to fun the Night's watch. They would build in exchange for payment to fund the Night's Watch, and had This practice was likely started by a Bran Stark, and continued for several generations, with the Night's Watch maintaining their secret building techniques until eventually it was all lost to time. Bran's Builders eventually came to refer to one man.

I personally think that both House Hightower and Daune are descendents of "The Great Empire of the Dawn". But, I do think that they were both minor houses without Dragons..... Similar to House Velaryion being a minor family from Valyria.

As regards the ancient library of Alexandria, there were 2 major fires. The first happened when Julius Ceasar found himself trapped in Alexandria and besieged by hostile troops in 48B.C.. As part of his attempt to fight his way through a blockade, ships anchoring in the harbour were set alight. Unfortunately the fires spread to nearby buildings, including the library which suffered substantial damage. It wasn't destroyed, however, many books were lost. Roman historians put the number of burnt books at around 40,000. Cleopatra made it an important priority during her reign to replace as many of the lost books as possible while at the same time seeking out copies of new books from throughout the ancient world, succeeding in both tasks. The second fire happened in the late 4th Century A.D., when a christian mob attacked the library (then housed in the Serapeum) and burnt it down. This happened during the time of Hipatia, a famous pagan philosopher & scientist, whose life was the subject of the film 'Agora' a few years back (where she was portrayed by Rachel Weisz). The fire happens early in the film. Given that next to none of the books from the library have survived, that 2nd fire must have been truly devastating. The reason why its impact is often downplayed in articles has most likely to do with the fact that it was started by christians.

Great stream Robert , the Hightowers are definitely one of those intriguing somewhat mysterious Houses that I thoroughly enjoy discussing. The fact that the HT's have persevered for as long as they have , being one of the oldest Houses on the continent seemingly having been around for so many millennia. And the way they operate having so many arms of influence from the Citadel , the Faith , banking , trade / commerce , enormous wealth (one of if not the richest Houses in Westeros), large military force (believe largest land and sea forces in Westeros) and strategically marrying into prominent Houses over the generations when they see an advantage in doing so. Just the Citadel alone who controls the access and dispersing of knowledge and having a maester in most every noble House in the realm , as well as control of the Raven mail system and likely access to secret texts / books that most everyone else can not view ; is such an advantage for the HTs given the enormous amount of eyes , ears and general information they have access to. Same with the Faith , many noble Houses especially outside of the North have members of the Faith teaching their children , and often have to defer to the Fot7 for marriages , succession / crowning at times (like Aegon I) and tends to have a hand and weigh in on many political goings on as well.
Ntm the Hightowers tend to have a foothold in every side of any threat , crisis , conflict or invasion - usually staying neutral long enough to pivot the winning side and wind up advantageously placed regardless of any outcome. It is quite genius how the HT's operate , have enormous wealth , power and influence via many vehicles to do so and yet do it in a mostly withdrawn manner without often being a figure-head drawing too much attention or ire , all the while pulling the strings from behind the scenes. And it has worked quite well for the HTs being able to survive as long as they have and doing so in such a position of wealth , power and influence. The HT's m.o. tends to be the appearance of neutrality and staying directly out of most conflicts but i think the threat of the Others , Euron's carnage , and dragons returning to the continent will force them literally and figuratively down from their ivory tower. I do think some type of epic magical event / action could come from the tower in the current narrative, the base of which I do think is evidence of a pre-Valyrian dragon riding empire and I think suggests the Hightowers themselves could have been some GeotD remnant that sailed over to Westeros many thousands of years ago. And in the end i do suspect regardless of whatever action the HT's take in the current narrative and whatever transpires around them they will likely survive with their tower intact as they have for so many generations.

Another reason the Hightowers could have silver gold hair is because after the dance Rhaena Daemons daughter has a second marriage to a younger Hightower son and they have 6 girls one of them could have married into the Hightower lordship family tree. But I also think the Hightower’s always been special like the Daynes. Another interesting thing about Rhaena is she is the last known Dragon rider besides Nettles. We have no idea how Morning dies but I bet the Hightower’s had something to do with it.

Not saying that you are wrong about your speculations of the looks of the Hightowers but I think their are a couple of official artworks of Alicent second wife of Viserys where she has black hair (black and white picture in fire and blood) and brown hair in the story of the rogue prince. On the other hand their is also official artwork of an other Hightower, 1 of Maegor's wife's, Ceryse Hightower where she is depicted with very blond (maybe even white) and light eyes (again not alot of colour) in The World of Ice and Fire

Didn’t Jon have a dream he was wearing Valyrian steel armor? And Euron is the only character currently, to my knowledge, in possession of such armor. Do you think it’s possible Euron will die in Winds of Winter and the Hightower’s, being aware of what’s going on at/beyond the wall, will give the armor to Jon in the belief he is meant to lead the realms of men against the Others?

Their being quiet doesn't really seem that strange. Their M.O. seems to be that when all hell breaks loose, they keep their heads down and wait for it to be clear who the winner will be. There's some wisdom to NOT wanting to be nominally in charge, but simply building a power base independent of whoever is "king". When conditions are stable, they exert their influence.
Even Robert's reign could be said to be an unstable period as there was no way how his house would deal with succession.

50:37 I'd be very interested to see it turn into 9. One of the overlooked things I've caught is that "the Seven Kingdoms" were actually nine kingdoms, pre-conquest. At the time of the conquest the Riverlands and the Iron Islands had been temporarily combined, which would reduce it to eight. But to reduce it to seven they would've either had to leave out Dragonstone and its vassals on the grounds that the Targaryens already controlled them and weren't styled as kings; or leave out Dorne on the grounds that the Targaryens didn't successfully conquer it at that point. Either way, the Seven Kingdoms have long had nine great or royal houses. It would make an interesting meta point if his trilogy that's turned into 7 books turned into 9 that served as a trilogy or trilogies. Part of the reason a lot of people are frustrated with the way things are now is that we've been frozen at the middle of the story for 11 years, so it would fit if GRRM actually needed 4 more books to conclude what he's taken 5 to set up as well.

  • @kathrynbassett9402

Sam getting the Valerian Steel sword: if the 2 Hightowers looking at the Glass Candle know what is happening with The Others, and they get reports from The Citadel (or maybe just know about Sam being there because he was traveling with Maester Aemon who they might watch), then maybe the Hightowers will get him the sword to bring back North rather than him having to somehow get it.

As far as Lynesse being a concubine of the prince in Lys, that's not a bad deal at all. The Essosi city-states seem roughly analogous to the ancient empires of the East in the real world, where being a royal concubine came with immense power and status if you played your cards right. In Ancient China, a royal concubine named Wu Zetian managed to become a powerful Empress. No sneering at that!

being a concubine in many ways was a reasonably pragmatic way to upgrade ones lifestyles and luxury. the ability to barter coitus for room and board is much different than to labor in a quarry all day. remember. not all women find this to be holding them down. but rather an upperhand to say their peasant male peers.

1:19:10 I disagree with you here. I think Arianne is bringing Aegon I's crown and Myrcella, and going to offer them both to Faegon along with a marriage alliance, but I think Faegon is going to take the crown and marry Myrcella. Trying to marry his family into the royal family may indeed be Doran's default plan, but having something go wrong with it is certainly GRRM's default result. I think this has been adequately foreshadowed both by Doran's track record and the number of different characters that have speculated about whether Cersei would support her son over her daughter. Besides that, Maggy the Frog is one of the prophetic characters whose visions have been shown to be accurate but not always interpreted correctly, and if all three of Cersei's children are to be crowned Myrcella is far more likely to be crowned as Faegon's queen than a queen in her own right. This is actually a key assumption in my prediction of how the end of the story will go and especially the scouring of King's Landing if you're interested.
