Online gaming on Dreamcast was great! Quake 3 Arena was the first online game I played. On the 56k modem I enjoyed Q3A, Unreal Tournament all without any leg. The web browser was nice too. There was even Dream call that let you call other people around the world. The thing about online gaming with Dreamcast is that I never encountered any whining, cussing, or bad behavior at all. Everyone I played with just wanted to have fun.
The dreamcast was a great console, short-lived but incredible - So many awesome games - Shenmue, powerstone, sonic adventure 1 & 2, crazy taxi, phantasy star online etc. . .
Josh Watson I guess that’s why they call it one of the greatest consoles ever..... I don’t know how old you are but I can assure you the PlayStation2’s ability to play DVDs was THE factor hands-down no debate. Back then DVD players were still 150 or $200 for a cheap one.
nateman79 true but sega wanted to keep the arcade feel of a game. Like bringing a arcade home. They failed no coming back but i wouldnt say because of ps because sega was already failing before. Sega even tried releasing consoles early which was stupid because they tried to compete with Sony. Non consistent and the disappearance every few months made sega fail
The Dreamcast is simply a cool gaming console combined with MAME-like Arcade gameplay style all rolled into one. Even though I only played a few games on the Dreamcast back in the year 2000 at my friend's house for a few days and never played it again since but I never get tired/bored watching the Dreamcast gameplay videos let alone actually playing them LOL. I just bought a Dreamcast console w/ 2 controllers & a memory card for 10 bucks powers on but no AV cable to test it yet for now. SDC #1!!
The Dreamcast was the first console out of last generation...so yes it's direct competitors were the Playstation 2, Gamecube and Xbox. The Sega Saturn was what went against the Playstation and Nintendo 64.
Seeing Soul Calibur for the first time was indeed a bit of a brown trouser moment.. It was so good looking and played so well - it was just miles ahead of anything else, indeed good for what you'd expect from the Dreamcast itself! I still happily play it today.
Really it failed mostly because it came at a very awkward time. As the guy from sega said they don't want to wait for brodband. Sega couldn't wait to release the system because they were sinking fast. The dreamcast is strange because as hard as it tried to be a contender with ps2 and xbox it still had this strange 90's feel to it. Sega wanted to utilize the technology people were using at the time. But that was a time when technology changed rapidly, sony and microsoft changed with it sega didnt
Not really, in 2006 over 60% of America was still on Dial up. Broadband penetration has only in the past few years overtaken dial up. And regardless Dreamcast did have a Broadband Adapter for those on a broadband connection.
@XcXtrippyXcX I can only recommend the huge aricle at Eidolon's Inn SegaBase about the Dreamcast for really see why they discontinued it. It was because they couldn't afford it. And yes, pirating played a role - but it was not the only one. Also, the missing DVD drive (they just couldn't afford putting one in) played quite a role. Also note that by Christmas 2000, they decided if they couldn't surpass the N64 they would discontinue the system. They missed, not by much, but they missed.
The Dreamcast has 8megs of Vram! Not to mention the fact that it can do 5:1 texture compression (sometimes 8:1 texture compression) ON THE FLY in the video hardware. That means that there is NO slow down when compressing textures because compressing and decompressing doesn't take up main CPU cycles. Another VERY impressive feature of the Dreamcast, is that the PowerVR2DC has Hidden Surface Removal (HSF). HSF means that any polygons that are not facing the user don't get textured or rendered.
They brought out quite a few shooters for the DC after it had officially "died" (Ikaruga, Under Defeat, Radiligy etc.). It still held peoples attention and was easy enough to program for that companies continued to bring out games based on the NAIOMI arcade hardware. Personally I hope there will be more Homebrew shooters in future like DUX, Last Hope and the promising (but unfinished) Drill.
i have all 3 game systems for that time, and i almost exclusively play my dreamcast, which i got not only after the system died, but also was more than willing to buy again.
I loved the Dreamcast. Still have mine and I bring it out for some Power Stone once and a while. Although it didn't have the greatest selection of awesome titles, there's definitely some diamonds in the rough. I believe that Sega ended up pulling it because of the rampant piracy that happened when hackers realized their disc format was just a CD with more space (that hardly ever got used). Yaaar..
I believe it's the Windows CE logo. Dreamcast was made to support the windows CE operating system (along with the native DC OS). Certain windows programs and games could be easily ported to the console because of this compatibility. CE wasn't actually installed on the DC though, it was just supported by it. CDs that worked from the CE OS would have to include a copy of it on the disc itself.
@thatsistheguy Yes, and it was because they didn't have the money to wait. In fact, they knew since the japanese launch failed (because of NEC failing to deliever enough chips) that they didn't even had enough money to support the Dreamcast and could not afford to put a DVD drive into it (they considered it at first). And that's the only reason why they stopped the Dreamcast.
Well that's fair enough. We had a neighborhood not 100 meters from my house that had 56K till about that same time, while we were cruising DSL and whatnot.
100% agree with you, ps2 has better looking graphics now! if Dreamcast still had developer support like capcom, THQ, midway ect, it would have just as good as graphics as the ps2 hands down!, the better the developer knows the ins and outs of a system, the more they can use the hardware! thats why games looked shitty on ps2 in the begining and now they look pretty good! same idea with DC if it lasted tell now the software would look a lot better then it did back in 2000 soulcalibure is amazing!
@XcXtrippyXcX the other issue was because back then people grabbed that ps2 for the dvd player as a secondary excuse. dvd players were expensive... had sega went the dvd route they may have just pulled it off with the dreamcast. I mean they did eventually make a broadband adapter... and with dvd support they would have had much more room to create complex operating system variations that could offer more features.
@@MrDebauch No, a lot more (since gaming companies don't manufacture CD/DVD drives like electronics manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft do; they buy them, thereby adding to the cost). Sega was already losing money on every Dreamcast sold, and despite solid-selling titles, it wasn't enough to recoup those losses. Adding DVD playback would only have exacerbated the problem. And Sega already lost serious money after the Saturn's abrupt launch in mid-1995.
@@GamingDelight well i have heard people say the complete contrary. (probably both getting this dork information from youtube) nice chat though, a decade after the the comment you decided to respond to.
@@MrDebauch 1. The complete contrary was dead wrong. Research proved that Sega was never going to bounce back in the hardware business after the failed Genesis add-ons and the Saturn's disastrous launch. 2. What's the big deal? Someone had to respond.
I had a Sega...the platform failed because of: 1. It had modem instead of broadband (listen to his projections, they are ludicrous) 2. It had CD instead of DVD 3. Bad marketing 4. Bad price 5. Lack of game titles 6. Inability to adjust to the competition The graphics were good and the titles it did have were decent. The Sega employees just goofing around in the office instead of working couldn't have helped.
But the #1 reason was the Sega Saturn's surprise launch in North America, which drove third-party developers, who already had trouble programming games for it, to lose faith in Sega and save their games for the N64 and/or PlayStation. As the Saturn crashed and burned, Sega's stock dropped, and Sega of America laid off numerous employees. Though the Dreamcast got more retailers and sold more units than its predecessor and was easier to make games for, the damage from 1995 had been done.
How was the Xbox online before sega? The Sega Saturn had a modem in 1997 and its online multiplayer is still supported. Also the SNES and Genesis had modems too.
It's crazy how much the xbox copied sega... The online, and the controller... I bet if sega would have just put a DVD player in the DC. It would still be running the marking not only with game titles, but it would be ruling the online market.
@dziltener Actually the Dreamcast was discontinued for two Reasons, Software Pirating ( Courtesy of the Echelon ) and Xbox ( Courtesy of Microsoft ) With both System and Software sales dying in 2000 ( People pirated the games instead of buying them )

@indraluap I agree with that. People think the PS2 was the true next big step in gaming, and it kind of was. But the Dreamcast was fully capable of carrying that title itself, and was doing up until the PS2 released.

I don't get all the MS vs. Sony vs. Nintendo fan boy arguments. The bottom line is there are different reasons to buy each of them. 360 is for the hard-core type gamer because it has so many titles, the Wii reaches non-traditional gamers, and the PS3 still has a fairly cheap and altogether reliable blue-ray system (with some decent game titles on the side). Every time there is something about PS3 or the 360 on youtube, the entire comments section turns into a fanboy argument. Just stop... really
Dolphin, lol. The Samba music game was ahead of its time. I imported a Japanese Dreamcast well before the American one came out All in all, it was an impressive system, but never really excelled.
idk about that. Have you played Willy Beamish on the emulator. It emulates EVERYTHING !! even the load times. lol On GENS however they foresaw this problem & fixed it so you could have a fast foreword button.

I still play my dreamcast today. As a matter of fact I just got done
10 years later than that! I just played THPS2 on mine the other day!

such a good system. I was always a sega homer and its so sad that DVD support killed it.
