Yeah, I appreciate the possibility offered that the hunters are just extreme sport-hunting enthusiasts, hobbyists with a lot of commitment, from an unknown core culture, instead of honor-guard Klingons as established in the lesser movies. They give prey a chance to fight back because them's the rules of their game.
To do the Predator stealth mode shots, I think they use the same camera footage shooting the background, in layers cut into shapes of a sort of topographic map of the Predator, and they increasingly distort the image as the layers represent thicker parts of the creature. For the awesome water shot, I think what they tweaked from their usual approach is they also desynchronized the video on the layers, so each layer is showing the shot a few moments earlier than the last. This gives the splashes the illusion that they are wrapping around the Predator’s feet as he moves through his step, and even kind of look like they’re splashing up again when he lifts his foot, when really we’re just seeing one splash for each footfall distorted in time through the layers.
@@stevebernard1295 IIRC from a behind the scenes special years ago the splashes were recorded first; basically there were boards just below the surface with a little pneumatic hammers under them that made the splashes. They laid out a board for each footstep, firing the hammers in time to how they wanted the Predator to walk. Then they recorded the actor in the red chroma key suit following the same path and timing, then spliced the footage together as you described. Really cool shit for the time, still looks great.

@@NovaBlueNova 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️holy smokes, I didn’t have any sense that that was inserted. I really thought that was part of the movie. I don’t think I was paying enough attention to what the guys were actually saying, and it does look super slick.
I always thought the predator's motivation was to hunt Danny Glover's character after witnessing him be a total badass in the opening scene, marking him as the ultimate trophy. It starts taking his team members as an indirect challenge and even kills King Willy after he gives advice. I guess that's what the Predator did in the first movie, as well. It saved Arnold for last after identifying him as the ultimate warrior and leader.
I thought that too. And that predator is a young one, trying to prove himself to the pack. Which makes him more "cheeky", yet better armed, than the first predator (daddy pred doesn't want his baby ending up in some g-men labos).
The best thing about the first Predator movies is that they both start out as a different genre and then suddenly you're in a scifi action thriller instead. The First movie is the typical 80s Soldier/Special Ops and the second one starts as a gritty, Hard Boiled cop movie.
Now that you mention it, that might have been part of why Prey is so well liked, it starts as a historical drama about native americans before really getting into the sci fi part.
Danny Glover plays some sort of Honey Badger / Goose hybrid in this movie. So fearless and intimidating that the Predator spends the final act running away from him.
NO IT WASN'T!!! It was a heartwarming story about Colin watching Predator: The First Predator at his dad's favorite porno theater. He CLEARLY said that he saw Predator 2: The Second Predator at the mall and then called his brother. Sheesh! Pay attention, will ya! (sarcasm)
The nerd guy on the train was a reference to Bernard Goetz, who shot a gang member in the NY subway. His trial was pretty famous in the 80s. In Predator 2 the extrapolation is that all commuters will be armed like Goetz
For years I thought everyone regarded Predator I & II equally. When I found out otherwise I was perplexed. Schwarzenegger and Glover’s characters were simultaneously completely different and the same in the best way. And I friggin loved King Willy man.
23:35 he's not overacting. The character likely thinks he's having a heatstroke (do to over exertion/having a gunfight during a record breaking heatwave) which causes hallucinations, so he's trying to shake some sense back into his mind when he sees the Predator, likely mistaking it for a hallucination.
Regarding the FX in the alleyway scene: they dedicate plenty of time to describe this particular special effect in one of the making-of featurettes on the DVD/Blu-ray release, something that really stuck with me throughout the years, impressive as it is. Hours were spent to film that little episode: basically, they had to shoot multiple identical takes both with and without Kevin Peter Hall present in the scene. The whole puddle assembly had these little panels underneath the water that would punch up to simulate the heavy steps of the Predator. KPH would then have to act out the same scene in time with the effects. It was heavily choreographed and then put together in post as a single shot. I may forget a couple of things here and there but that's pretty much the gist of it. 😄
Hollow Man (2000) used the same technique I think; the wiki describes the repeated takes on a precise mechanical track, as you have said. To isolate the desired parts in that production, quote: "Where [Hollow Man] was outlined in smoke, water and blood, [Bacon] wore a latex body suit, face mask, contact lenses and a dental plate all of one color; green was used for blood, blue for smoke, and black for water" (Douglas Keesey, 2006) That film looked great and there's a couple of very similar scenes to the alleyway scene. I wonder if it was the same Sony fx crew.
Imagine how much easier practical effects would be if you could mount a motion control suit directly onto the actors' joints - that way you could remote-control them precisely. It would be awesome.
I was in a head on collision over 10 years ago. I had to stay in a hospital for a month after for recovery and operations. While I was staying there, my brother brought a stack of dvds to keep me entertained. I watched predator 2 countless times during that month while on a lot of meds. Weird happy sad memories of watching this with my family in a hospital … numerous times.
Funny how movies/shows can remind you of a very specific time in your life. I broke my knee close to 10 years ago and remember watching countless hours of Cutthroat Kitchen of all things while hopped up on meds haha. Glad you're doing better.
I feel like not enough people talk about Alan Silvestri's scores. He's a bit hit or miss, but when he cranks out a proper banger like the themes for Back to the Future, Predator, Forest Gump and Avengers, they are legendary.
The first I heard about Predator 2 was on some entertainment show, and I remember the hostess saying, "Unlike the first movie, where Arnold used his brawn to defeat the Predator, Glover has to use his brains to triumph in the sequel." Then I saw both movies and realized that whoever wrote that BS hadn't seen either movie, because that's the _exact opposite_ of what happens in both movies. Arnold outsmarts the Predator with the mud and traps, while Glover just beats it in hand-to-hand combat using its own weapon. It taught me not to trust reviews and previews.
Your right, but to be fair, #1 has the team clearing a plot of jungle vegetation with just bullets, while #2 has Busey's team in hazmat suits hunting with nitrogen guns.
@@OnyDeus That doesn't really make the comparison work. In the first movie you have the elite mercenary team, the baddest fuckers around, encounter a deadly alien monster they can't even _see,_ and they wig the fuck out. The deforestation sequence is a display of brawn with no brains, just panic, and they get picked off one by one as the movie goes, until Arnold's character is left with almost nothing, but he has learned enough important things about his enemy that he can finally outsmart him and win. In Predator 2, the planning and preparing isn't the idea or makings of Glover's character, that's by Busey's character and his guys, Glover just discovers this on his quests as a detective trying to figure out the truth of these wild killings. Busey's planning _doesn't work,_ he tried to be clever but the Predator still outsmarts him and kills him, Glover finally defeats the Predator by being a better warrior who never surrenders. Even when he realizes that there's a half dozen more of these beasts, he doesn't give in, he's ready to continue giving his all until the end, and that's probably why the other Predators respect him and let him go, complete with a souvenir. I never really thought about it until just now, but I realize that this is an inversion, and not a bad one, especially when you consider how the movie is generally pretty derivative of the first one. When you consider how incredibly quickly this movie was written, shot, and edited, that makes it all the more impressive. Predator 2 _is_ derivative a cash-in sequel, but a shockingly good one, all things considered.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine you're absolutely right. I wasn't trying to be serious, but I'm glad it helped you come to that observation. I never noticed that either, cool stuff.
Well, yes and no. It's shown in the first movie they have heat vision naturally. So it only stands to reason they would prefer heat vision as their default.
The expansion of the Predator tech in this movie was the best part in my opinion. The first aide kit was probably my favorite. Was so fascinating seeing that for the first time.
The only thing that bothers me about predators seeing default infrared is the question of how they became so technologically advanced. You can't distinguish wires, you can't leave written notes.
@@HellecticMojo sure you can. I use infrared all the time and so do many electronics troubleshooting/metrology engineers. It's amazingly cheap To get sensors capable of incredible things and sensitivity. Easily being able to distinguish between ink or paper on a written note. Sensors are so cheap and sensitive now that you can see the heat differential and markings Left behind as you drag your fingers across the wall. You can decipher an alarm pad code, because fingers will leave behind tiny amounts of heat, ascending in contrast of the order the buttons were pressed. You can look at a tiny ball bearing and see the miniscule area where the heat is building up.... To help find a fault and diagnose issues.
The predator stealth effect was done with chroma key using a guy in a red suit. It was like how'd you do an invisibility effect, except you apply a distortion to the background before covering the guy's outline with it.
They talk about that in the re:View of the first movie, I think they were talking about the water effect specifically because you can see the water splash through the moving leg and that's not something you can just key out. My guess is like Colin said, they just used an air cannon and the moving legs are an optical effect. It looks good but the legs splash up a bit too much water for it to look like real footsteps.

Fun fact: those Predators were played by members of the LA Lakers, who they hired _specifically_ to convince Danny Glover, a devoted Lakers fan, to sign on.

It makes sense that the predator arrives.. goes to where a war is taking place .. and then it notices that Mike (Glover) single handedly takes out a whole bunch of dudes.. so it sees him as a great warrior (trophy)...it then goes and takes out a bunch of the scorpios to test himself against those warriors and challenge to Mike...then It also notices glover talking to everyone like hes the boss even to his superiors...a lot of it is based off the predator watching Mike in the first battle.
Yeah the movie actually did a better job in establishing why the Predator and cop team was connected than this retrospective let's on. It went after Glover's team when taking note they were his subordinates and after the level of skill he displayed in that first gang war fight.
Okay but why is the Predator watching Mike sleep Why is the Predator at Mike's wedding I think he has enough combat data now nevermind he's mentoring Mike's autistic grandson and they're really connecting, hooray for all this combat data
The first movie was set up as a stereotypical military action film that turned into a sci-fi thriller. The second movie was set up as a stereotypical cop action film turned into a sci-fi thriller. As a Jamaican I always found the kings willies crew comical, I assumed all the voodoo stuff was just showing some sort of ancient cultural connection since they had been around for centuries, they assumed that predator was a demon and were just mimicking rituals their ancestors picked up from earlier visits.
Yeah, I got the impression they weren't terribly serious about it themselves, since they seem to get a good laugh out of calling their terror campaign "voodoo".
15:49 Hopkins is actually Jamaican. I believe in the original script the gang was supposed to be Rastafarian and/or some variety of Obeah, but the producers were afraid the audience wouldn't know what that was, and made them change it to Voodoo. King Willie still namedrops Rastafari terms in his dialogue, so I'm assuming the change was made pretty late.
One theory I always liked about the Predator's motivation in this film is that the one we follow is the young blood of the tribe. He needs more weapons, he's more reckless than the Predator in the first film with how often he dives into crowds rather than always picking people off one by one, allowing himself to get more easily and more heavily injured than the one in the first film did, even the roar we hear throughout the film is a higher pitch than the previous movie.
Three of the most badass scenes ever. King willie, the xeno skull, and the predators coming out at the end. With the intense score. These wrecked my kid brain at the time.
Predator 2 is one of those movies that gets better with age. At the time it was considered a cash grab sequel, but 3 and a half decades later it's considered a classic and the best Predator sequel. It also had one of the greatest casts of all time. Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Ruben Blades, Bill Paxton.. absolutely legendry. RIP Kevin Peter Hall and Bill Paxton.
the score from Alan Silvestri is absolutely incredibl, also the reason the FX don't look as good in later sequels is because the legendary Stan Winston passed away and didn't work on the later films
Amazing work - not a criticism, but always thought definitely his work on Back to the Future and Predator overlapped a bit, and you can hear similarities at times.
Predator 2 is one of the most entertaining action/sci-fi/horror movies of all time. The characters are great, the action sequences are fun, the pacing is perfect, there's no shitty CGI, and Alan Silvestri's powerful and atmospheric score amplifies everything to another level. This movie has everything you'd want in a sequel, I'll never understand why it got so much hate back in the day.

The first Predator comic was released in 89 and followed Dutch’s brother John, who was a NYPD Detective, hunting the Predator during a heatwave. It’s basically the exact same idea as Predator 2. Also Alien Vs Predator comic was released in 90 and I think was just an idea from the studio. The original AvP comic was great and is on a futuristic desert planet and has a similar plot to the movie. It’s like a avp space western. I’d recommend those early dark horse comics
_Aliens vs. Predator 2,_ the video game (of all things), has one of the best plot ideas for a Predator story: the hunter tallied a man as a successful hunt on its scorecard, but the guy got put back together with modern medicine, so all the hunter's there to do is put him down and make sure its stats stay cherry
_"The original AvP comic was great and is on a futuristic desert planet and has a similar plot to the movie. It’s like a avp space western."_ In the comics it's the same universe as the Aliens movies, meaning theres also Colonial Space Marines in the AvP comic universe, like depicted in the AvP first person shooter games. It's an awesome sci-fi action and horror setting because it combines xenomorphs, predators and space marines in a "natural" way, like they all just belong into that same universe. Something the movie adoptions completely failed to grasp, particularly the first movie, when they make the setting current-day.

Here's how I THINK the footsteps were done: 1. They started by filming the footage of KPH's footsteps as he walks through the alley. 2. They then did the exact same shot with everything in the same place as the earlier shot, but without KPH in the shot. 3. They then took the footage of KPH walking, and keyed him out with footage of the alley when he isn't walking, but with a compressor going off in the footsteps. 4. They rotoscoped some electricity onto it to cover-up some of the less convincing frames. They may have used a different lens for 2, or did something to distort the image a little (but not necessarily). Because the Predator's invisibility distorts the image behind it, nothing looks weird about splicing the two shots together.
14:30 That explosion was set off in East Boston, and was more powerful than they though it would be, as it damaged windows across a large area. I’m not sure how they made the Predator camo effects in this movie, but I saw a clip on how they did it in the first one. They shot the scene twice with 2 cameras - one with a closer zoom and just the background. The Predator actor would move through the jungle wearing a red suit (to contrast with the green background). Then in post they would matte in the zoom lens over the red character. Genius way of doing this before digital effects! @RedLetterMedia

Predator 2 really grew on me when I saw it repeatedly on cable back in the day. I like it almost as much as the original now. It's good and I appreciate how they tried to change it up from the first movie. And yeah, I find it so hard to believe they did all the photography in four weeks. If true, wow!
I had that Predator 2 poster with the breakdown of all the weapons. It was a fold-out that came in an issue of Lobo the year P2 came out. I had it in my school locker because I was a clueless nerd.
I was a sequels kid for some reason. Robocop 2, TMNT 2, Home Alone 2, Ace Ventura 2, Predator 2, Gremlins 2, Child's Play 2, the more obvious ones like Terminator 2, Star Trek 2, Mad Max 2, Aliens... Yes, the first installments are typically objectively better, but the sequels are a ton of fun because they're never taken as seriously and ideas are really let loose creatively, for better or worse.
Sequels back then were just different, most of those movies you listed are classics and the sequels were often just as good as the originals sometimes better. It's sad because today more often than not when you hear it's a sequel it's probably going to be a uninspired soft reboot cashgrab, one of the biggest examples being the recent Star was sequels...
@@-Zevin- Idk, I think only in retrospect they are classics. I've had too many arguments growing up with people claiming every sequel I listed (save for the obvious ones) just plain sucked, most especially in comparison to their predecessor. I'm sure the metacritic scores reflect as much too. And they're not entirely wrong, some lacked structure, had meandering or nonsensical plots, etc. But my most important metric has always been entertainment value, which they all had in spades. But you do make a good point in contrasting that era of sequels, which sometimes bordered on experimental in their vision, to what we have now, which are sterile, soulless, uninspired cash grabs.
19:59 what's always stuck with me when the guy falls off the roof at least 5 stories onto the ground is that he lands on a plastic folding table for the taco truck outside and the table doesn't collapse or break. Hardest working table in the movie.

The subway scene was a parody/commentary of Bernard Goetz incident that happened on the New York subway…even to the point of the character resembling Bernard Goetz. Also, the motivation of the Predator hunting Danny and his team because they are like the “alpha tribe” of LA - like the Jamaican and Latin American gangs - so they are “fair game” for hunting especially since the Predator is town with a few days to kill…

100 percent. I love them equally
I think they’re an amazing 1-2 combination. Predator 2 is a little cheesier and over the top but Glover is flawless in it and I love both.
That scene where Predator slowly walks towards King Willie, while water messes up its cloak is so superb and creepy.

To isolate the desired parts in that production, quote:
"Where [Hollow Man] was outlined in smoke, water and blood, [Bacon] wore a latex body suit, face mask, contact lenses and a dental plate all of one color; green was used for blood, blue for smoke, and black for water" (Douglas Keesey, 2006)
That film looked great and there's a couple of very similar scenes to the alleyway scene. I wonder if it was the same Sony fx crew.
Imagine how much easier practical effects would be if you could mount a motion control suit directly onto the actors' joints - that way you could remote-control them precisely. It would be awesome.

@@pontiusporcius8430I always think of this, when I hear his name. It's so energetic and fitting!
That was the day you lost your trust in humanity.
What she said was beyond stupid

Because everything absorbs and radiates different amounts of heat.

I had that Predator 2 poster with the breakdown of all the weapons. It was a fold-out that came in an issue of Lobo the year P2 came out. I had it in my school locker because I was a clueless nerd.
I think a friend of mine had it, too.
RLM talking about classic 80s 90s not-as-good sequels is what I live for
not-as-good sequel is you being kind. This film was horrific.
@@chiefchimp2789
Nah, Predator 2 is great
@@chiefchimp2789 Imagine being this wrong.
You are mistaken.
Hollywood, the gift that keeps giving...RLM poor sequels.

"A couple video games"
and AvP2, best one ever :)
Yeah, the motive for the hunter in the "Predator" storyline of _AvP2_ is flat-out smarter than most Predator movies.
I love Colin I could listen to him talk about movies all day
Predator 2 is such a fantastic sequel. I think the energy is so frenetic in a fun way and the violence is amazing.
The pants trophy shot is absolutely hilarious.
pants edit into the scene was phenomenal
"I don't think Jamaica has anything to do with VOODOO...?" - Jay Bauman's Wrongest Statements, 2024 Edition.
He's not wrong though? Voodoo is Haitian, Obea is Jamaican.
This movie always had a soft spot in my heart! But I have never seen the dancing Predators video, HILARIOUS! Great video as always!
Gremlins 2, especially, was Joe Dante going, "Oh, I'll GIVE you a fucking SEQUEL."
@@wedgeserif556 The Key & Peele skit "Gremlins 2" brainstorm is pretty on point.
Same here. I saw so many 2's as a kid and never got around to the first until later in life. Return of Jafar, Home Alone 2 to name some examples.
It's still there!
Uh, I think you mean "plastic folding _chable_ ". This is a RLM video, after all.
I AM THE TABLE
@@blueowl0708 You're God damned right.
I loved the early 90s zeitgeist that Los Angeles was inevitably going to become a failed city and urban warzone. Predator 2 and Demolition Man being the best examples.
T2 also echoed it.
I distinctly remember that after watching the original at age 12, my mom and Dad assumed this movie would be about the same.
20 minutes or so in, and I had seen more nudity and gore than anyone my age should’ve.
The pants were great, but the closing scene with the dancing to your tune was the best!
Goetz is God!
"Lions! Tigers! Bears! Oh, my! _You're_ the bear." [something like that, cba to look it up]
Gary Busey spells it out, in the movie. Don't know how they missed that.
*edited, 'cause screwed up formatting.
Apart from being simply good, the movie feels unique due to way it's shot. It's so "Of its time". And Bill Paxton's sweaty armpits on his jacket is something you just don't see anymore in movies.
Armpit Gaffer as a career is no longer economically viable.
Colin: Pants trophy was hilarious! My goodness that was awesome.
Jay: Colin, as a special effects guy, can you talk about how the cloaking effects were done?
Colin: Sure, especially that cool effect of the Predator walking through the water. The answer is: I have no idea.
😄😄😄
I watched Predator 2 again about 6 months ago for the first time in probably 15 years and I really enjoyed it but for different reasons than when I was a kid. The Robocopesque dialogue and feel of the city really stood out to me, the moment on the train when all the passengers pull out guns killed me 😅
My moms friend took me to see this when I was 10 years old. I had already seen the first one recently so my mom figured it couldn’t be much more horrific than that. Boy was she wrong.
Lol, I can imagine when you get to that sex scene and then the..ritual murder she may have said to herself "Oh Boy"
My mom had the same theory when she took me and my cousin to see RoboCop 2. She was also wrong.
Great Re-View, I really liked Predator 2 and it was fun hearing you both talk about it. The highlight was the pants scene on the ship. I really hope you keep doing that kind of thing in future Re-views! 10 out of 10!
Predator 2 is an underrated Gem. Deserves way more credit.
I agree far superior to any other Predator film which came after it.
@anubusx I wish they stopped making these movies after this one. I mean look how much they messed that character up😮💨
@@anubusx Nah I take both Predators and Prey over Predator 2. Definitely Prey without doubt. Haven't seen Predators since it was new though.
Danny glover was so good in the role.
It's not as awful as the Predator films after it, but it's still a really boring and badly made sequel.
One thing that I think people miss about this movie is that the "Predator" from the first movie is not the predator in this movie.
In this movie , Danny Glover's character is The Predator.
Well they have a Predator that looks just like the Predator from Predator, but he's a good guy and doesn't predate anyone. Danny Glover plays the actual new Predator but he's called Liquid Predator and he's trying to kill Arnold Schwarzenegger's son instead of Schwarzenegger himself.
Whoever did the pants trophy room scene did an awesome job.
