  • Demonstration of how to solve a two-step algebra equation by isolating the variable with algebraic operations.
    7x - 8 = 27
    + 8 + 8 -- Add 8 to both sides
    7x = 35
    /7 /7 ---- Divide both sides by 7
    x = 5

    Thanks, this helped me a lot. :) I do have one question though, what if the (In this case 7) is a fraction? Would you do the same thing?

      You would do the same thing. The only difference is the last step would be to divide by the fraction on both sides, which is the same as multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of the fraction.
      eg. 2/3 x - 8 = 27
      +8 + 8
      2/3 x = 35 Now multiply both sides by 3/2
      (3/2)(2/3) x = 35 (3/2)
      x = 105 / 2

      To graph x -3y =5 it is useful to first put it in y-intercept form.
      x - 3y = 5
      -3y = -x + 5
      y = 1/3 x - 5/3
      Slope would be 1/3, y-intercept would be -5/3
