I didn’t like Beau is afraid. I thought it was a worse written version of After Hours mixed with Synecdoche New York. About 60 minutes too long. He’s in director jail for me. Loved Hereditary though.
Another great JWBS edit. Masterfully done and love the scenes you picked to go with Scorsese's praise, the poster shots when he names drops those classics... great stuff!
I know I'm in the minority, but I think Astwr has only gotten better with time, Beau Is Afraid is a remarkable piece of cinema, I can't really understand how it was panned so much by critics and audiences.
Ari Aster is one of the best living directors, Hereditary is a great film, Midsommar is a masterpiece that reinvented folk horror in a unique way and Beau is afraid is a masterpiece that reinvented the Road movie with a script never seen before and a mass on a scene worthy of the best directors in history
can’t agree that midsommar, or any of his films are masterpieces. he’s always fumbling the ending and it makes an otherwise timeless work of art a lot more forgettable and far less rewatchable. but I must say his films have the best cinematography of any horror films, or nearly any films, that I’ve ever seen.
@@stolensentience Beau's ending is magnificent and Midsommar is fantastic (of course they are memorable films), if you don't like them that's your problem
@@stolensentience For you they are not masterpieces, but they are anyway, especially Beau is afraid, even Martin Scorsese himself bowed before that film and called Aster one of the most extraordinary new voices in world cinema, but surely you understand more than Scorsese 😂
As an irish person I've decided that he mashed up Patrick Bergin and Gabriel Byrne when trying to say the fathers name, our 2 rougish attractive leading men who oddly broke through into mainstream Hollywood for a brief time decades ago and its understandable they'd be mixed up lol. I loved seeing Byrne in a film as - accidentally a - high profile as this after all these years.
The movie was longer than it ever needed to be. The entire half of 2nd act can literally be taken out and the story would remain the exact same. Plus the entire movie was meaningless.
I don’t see how Hereditary or Midsommar were particularly unsubtle. And then the entire point of Beau is Afraid was for every scene and every shot to be as unsubtle as possible, the movie wouldn’t be what it is if it didn’t bang you over the head with everything every chance it gets.
It's weird to hear Scorsese hammering home his points in a way I used to do, until I learned to keep from doing it. So there's one thing I do better than he does. :-)
Midsommer is not that great, what else can a medieval, barbaric practice of human sacrifice be but shocking if viewed by today's modern eyes not indoctorated into its practice.
@@YinkThePinkInkDrinker Great comeback. Look, I’ll be straight: what exactly is it about Peele that makes him so great? I’ve seen all three of his films-not a sizeable body of work by any means-and I’m just not impressed. The only good one is Us, and I actively despise Get Out.

Whether you think it’s a hilarious nightmare or insufferable tosh everyone should see Beau is Afraid at least once, if only to form your own opinion.
I saw it in theaters and I still think about it. Mostly how I still am not sure I understood it.
It has no definite meaning, it’s how it makes you feel, true art, that movie, like I don’t even like it that much
And to see Patti Lupone's performance
My favorite movie of the year

How wild and amazing it must have been for Aster, sitting in the audience, to hear Scorsese praise his work not knowing he was there. Wow.

I miss the days when they weren't trying to make every movie for every person.
@@SamDavies94 it really wasn't. It was very divisive, but it's reception was ultimately average.
it wasn't "panned so much" at all, most critics gave slightly positive reviews.
Loved Beau is afraid, i still prefer Hereditary over Midsommar

Beau is Afraid is his best film. So funny.

Midsommar is horrible.
Scorsese 🔥🔥
Hail Ari!
I might be one of the few people who loves Beau is afraid. Hope people will warm up to it over time
Martin Scorsese on My Favorite Year (1982)?
one of the most fun films ever produced!
then you go to film school and the professors teach you how to copy scorcese , this is why we have so few interestingly done movies

Aster can be great if he learns subtlety.
