i love her voice its so original and she sounds so sweet singing this song... always get shivers down my neck from her singing this song... Tino Ataahua Betty
I love this song.. I have been looking for it. I first heard on TV1 in NZ and then I came home to the US and nowhere to find it. Thank you for posting it.
Tēnā koutou: I remember singing Māori songs like this at school in NZ; Māori language, culture and the arts were compulsory subjects at high school and I loved all of it. Sir Edmund Hillary College built a small marae together via these programs and entered it into the Auckland cultural festival and won. We learned about the stories associated with the carvings from the mentors; girls learned to weave and so on. I feel this song has the power to summon cultural feelings and identity, so I enjoy this smooth version of Haere Mai also. Kei te pai, tino pai! Ka kite anō :D
He nahenahe no keia mele! Just for reference to our Māori kin, as kanaka maoli, we’ve never relinquished our sovereignty. It is crucial that we refer to ka pae aina o Hawaii as sovereign under illegal military occupation of the USA. “…e kue loa aku i ka hoohui ia o Hawaii me Amerika a hiki i ke aloha aina hope loa; vigorously protest the annexation of Hawaiʻi with America until the very last aloha ʻāina patriot who loves this land.”- James Keauilani Kaulia
That shouldn't be surprising, indonesians and polynesians are related (austronesian ancestors) and so are the languages. When I spent time in Sabah (east Malaysia), other than the minarets, the people and the language sounded almost-but-not-quite like being in some parts of rural east coast New Zealand as a child.
Aotearoa legend ♥️
