Impact Wrench Disassembly/Assembly

  • I bought a used air impact wrench which worked, but felt like something was wrong and it was making a strange noise. A good oiling through the oil port would have likely fixed the problem. But I decided to take it apart. So in this video I disassemble a Sears Craftsman Air Impact Wrench model 875-188840, clean, lube and re-assemble it. So if you want to know what's inside an impact wrench. It did fix the problem.

I used ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K this for the first time today to replace the front wheel bearing on my rwd 98 dodge dakota. This had absolutely no issue removing or reinstalling the lug nuts and it took off the axle nut without any struggle. Sounds like it's got some muscle to it. Time will tell

I have the same gun purchased in 1992. I worked at two shops so needed a second gun. It’s not very powerful compared to MAC/IR guns (400 ft/lb vs 625 ft/lb from my MAC AW434) but usually got the job done. I’d borrow a stronger gun when I needed it. I just used it for the first time in over 25 years and it worked fine. I’m surprised your boot is still soft, they tend to harden over time. Mine hardened up so bad I had to cut it off with a knife. Great video, thanks.

Very interesting. I think I'll just leave mine alone. You make it look easy, but I never did well on mechanical aptitude tests. In fact, I never did well on any mental aptitude tests. It's why I went into the Marines. Stupid, winding up in a line company in Vietnam. But I survived and can afford an air impact wrench. And if mine fails, I can just go get another! Thanks for your great video!

I Watched the Video, then went out to the workshop and tore apart my Lowe's Cobalt 1/2" Impact wrench. Followed the instructions, Minus the cleaning which you did not touch on how-to. Improvised and used Acetone to clean and oiled liberally, and off I went. Works good Now, It was absolutely useless to me before hand. Thanks

Not seen inside one of them before, thanks for that.
As an aside I used an electric impact wrench to get the stuck fixed cup out of a 45 year old Raleigh Moulton Mk3 frame (with a suitable large bolt affair). The Raleigh cup is pretty hard to remove even if you have the correct too - and an impact wrench makes it even easier than using a long braker bar!

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 років тому

The turbine part is similar in most wrenches I think. The hammer part in this wrench is a little different. I have used an impact wrench for removing fixed cups too.

I have a brand new GMC air impact gun that has never worked since I bought it.
I bought a kit that had a chisel impact gun and 1/2 inch wrench and drill all as a kit.
I purchaced it because i needed the chisel for some work..
I did not worry to much about the impact gun too much as being brand new I though that there can only be a small problem that i could fix at some stage.
Rather than mess about sending the whole lot back which are the directions i could fix this myself, but thought before doing so i would have a look on the internet to see if any one had ever come across one of these that did not rotate from start, and why it did not start.

Nice, those old made in Japan, Craftsman air tools starting with the 875 prefix are built by Florida Pneumatic, a very good company. Florida Pneumatic, along with Chicago Pneumatic built some very nice high quality air tools. How much torque does this wrench put out, 150ft lbs?

    • @babyasiah9700

Humberto Gómez in ur wrench at the bottom is a little ball that is helping the air get through and a little spring so watch out when u take it apart. Check if the rubber ring underneath the spring and ball is okay. Then check if ur iron pin behind ur trigger isn’t broken. Also what I had is that the ball was stuck in the spring while it should sit in the wrench seperately.

I have a craftsman 875.199870 and its over 20 years old and as long as you oil it will last a long time. I am a disabled vet spent 7 years in the NAVY on submarines wanted to do 30 but alas a stupid chain broke and it hit me crushing my spine So I am in a wheelchair,
I do not use it every day but if I was like I used them before the NAVY I was a mechanic with my dad who was one over 50 years. he used almost all craftsman. To bad now their tools are made in China. But I like craftsman impact tools as even my 20-year-old one I can get parts for it.
