I loved how this guy described his feelings on reptile enclosures it’s like bro I spend 10k on a ball python but don’t want a display that’s epic to go with it that we all know deep down the animal will enjoy a lot more…!? Strong agree 😎

Let's go! This guy is gonna be a big name one day, I think. Anoles are gonna take off. People don't want pets only for cuddles anymore. They need more stuff to put in their terrariums.

Great episode. Great influence on the reptile community. The jar set up for raising babies and displaying at expos is ingenious. That is the sort of innovation that will help with optics and help new owners for a few days after purchase. Very nice set ups and philosophy of keeping, Armen!

I agree...fantastic interview! I really enjoyed hearing this man's thoughts...
And yes, first reptile I kept was a trio of Anoles (which we called chameleons). I'm 74, so this was nearly 60 years ago, but I was already into a tank being decked out for the comfort of my critters AND something that was pleasing to look into and watch...you know; live plants, a manzanita branch, an old 'log' snuggled up against a rock-lined bowl.
And while I didn't try to breed them, I did find an egg once, but didn't even know if it was lizard or turtle...as I kept tiny painted turtles them.
    Thank you for this, Dillon!

I've always wondered why beautiful herp enclosures are not more the norm, although it seems from what I see on UA-cam that this is changing. I'm just getting interested in these animals again, along with fish, but I remember when I had a few reptiles 20 years ago and wanted to use live plants in their enclosures, most of the people I talked to about acted like that was a very strange thing to do. Actually, the beautiful enclosures I've seen online recently are probably at least partially responsible for my desire to get back into the hobby.

the small reptiles is a good thing to aim for. i find myself drawn more and more to cool climate and small reptiles. i live in the uk and temps are relatively low so choosing species that are comfortable with that means i could do so much better for them. i would rather have a really nice mansion of a viv for a couple of garter snakes than a technically acceptable box for a boa. i could then offer more options for behaviour and a more dynamic looking viv. it just makes for a nice environment for both of us. i would find it much harder to fit, keep and heat a suitably sized boa viv in my place.
i have been looking into the right lizard for me for a long time now. anoles have been a strong contender for a while. they seem very interactive, though not so handleable, but will also really benefit from a nicely made up enclosure. nice and colourful and switched on too. i love animals that are as interested in you as you are in them, makes for a nice relationship.

Man it’s funny some of the stuff he’s saying because I felt the same exact way , like why not have a huge vivarium display like a fish tank ? So I now have a 6.5 ft x 4.5 ft x 2ft vivarium with anoles and tree frogs in it , I built it into a window seat area that I wasn’t using and everytime someone comes over it draws a ton of attention very beautiful display, I find myself sitting in front of it just watching the reptiles wonder around and interact , the only downside is sometimes it keeps me from getting things done 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️ lmao

What a fantastic guest! My ethos is totally go for smaller species so you can provide relatively grand enclosures. In my teens I used to frequent keepers meetings (I think Dr Baines also attended these meetings). where we attempted to create a CB population of Green Anoles in South Wales. They are still one of my favourite display species, and they are so underrated and I think mistreated due to their cheap price tag. The other genera this gentleman keeps are also fantastic, and I hope to acquire some of those small gecko species.

I live in England but I was brought up in Winnipeg Manitoba until I was 19. As you can imagine there are not a huge number of reptiles there because of the climate. I used to catch turtles and garter snakes and sometimes crayfish.along the edge of the red river. When I was twelve my mum brought home an injured lizard. His tail was missing and I don’t think he was very happy. I was told he was an American chameleon. I loved this little guy madly still think of him often. As a child I believed we had a special connection. I took him everywhere with me. I tied a piece f wool round his neck and then tied it to my button. I still don’t really know what sort if lizard he was but he could Change colour from brown to green and almost blue. I am guessing he was a she as he never displayed a dewlap. I am hoping you might be able to guess what species he was. ❤❤

Oh cool! I don’t have to imagine… I live in Winnipeg (well technically just south of Winnipeg)! So yes, there aren’t many native reptiles for us to interact with here. Hmm… I would guess probably a green anole? It’s tough to say!

I can totally relate to the TV thing.😂My brothers used to like to watch Looney Tunes and stuff and I was not into the cartoons so much. I always wanted to watch National Geographic when I was a kid. And we used to go around catching frogs and lizards and snails and stuff. We would try to set up cool little habitats for them which never lasted of course. We would always try to figure out what they ate. Sometimes we were successful and sometimes we weren’t. I’m sure we made a lot of mistakes but we had a lot of fun.I know that’s what started my love for all the the stuff that most people think are creepy crawlies. My first reptile that my parents bought was a garter snake and we didn’t have the Internet back then, so unfortunately we were told to feed him goldfish and that’s what he ate. It was always neat watching him eat them, but he eventually escaped, which was probably better for him to be honest😂

Snake Discovery's zoo animals are laying eggs constantly because they're HAPPY. There's really no valid arguments for racks at this point. The saving money argument falls flat when you're putting that above the welfare of the animals.

@@luwildy I don't know why people use reproduction as the end all be all when it comes to successfully keeping animals. I've seen animals reproduce under horrible conditions. Cohabbing anoles with dart frogs is questionable imo. Their micobiomes are diffrent, there is a risk of pathogen spread between the species, and it is hard to say what stress may be caused by the presence of the other species. Ime europe is behind in dart frogs husbandry. Cohabbing and water features is more common in eureope. these are things that we have moved away from in the USA. There are cases of Phyllobates eating house geckos.
