  • This is an introduction to the basic workflow of how the program works from schematic layout thru PCB design and ordering a board on-line. This not a detailed tutorial on how to use KiCad, but hopefully an introduction to encourage you to try it.

Beware the hidden slippery slope of circuit board design. Once you have your design finished and in your own hands, the sense of project gratification will entice you to make more. And more. This slippery downward slope can become a second hobby in itself. That's not bad, though.
Once I retired and was able to concentrate on personal projects exclusively, I made over seventy-five different PCB designs in less than two years. Most are custom designs for personal ham radio projects.
There are alternatives to KICAD. Another program is named DIPTRACE. I went this route after first checking out KICAD. For me, the intuitive interface and ease of use was the deciding factor. Their auto-router kicks ass, IMO.
Although I professionally designed commercial boards for decades using ALTIUM, home circuit boards are immensely fun to create. The appealing finished projects speak for themselves.
I agree with Steve. Give home circuit boards a look.
I believe we are living in a golden age of home project design and construction.

can confirm. "hey I can squeeze 1mm of my board here, let's move all the parts a bit over to the right!"

Thank you. Other videos I have watched have over complicated it. I have how designed my first board using KiCad a process I will need when the lockdown is lifted and I am back in the workshop.

It still terrifies me, so I keep a good stock of perfboard. For small jobs it’s what I’m very used to and gives fast results for me. I’m middle-aged now so getting anything new to stick isn’t as easy as it once was. Maybe I’ll take another look. Any CAD always gets me 😐 yet I can freehand circuits all day long 😀

I used to draw mine with an etch resist pen directly to the copper while my pal had one of those fancy UV do-hickies.

    KICAD BASICS.......
    SIR,
I WATCHED YR ABOVE VIDEO EXPLAINING THE BASICS OF PCB LAYOUT MAKING SOFT WARE, THE KIKAD.
EARLIER ALSO MANY A VIDEOS ARE/WERE DONE FOR THE VERY PURPOSE AND MOST OF THEM MADE IT MORE AND MORE COMPLEX AND CREATED AN AVERSION IN LEARNING THEM.
IN THIS ONE VIDEO, UNLIKE THE OTHERS WITHOUT BEATING ROUND THE BUSH, YOU HAVE TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE OVERALL PICTURE OF USING IT IN THE SIMPLEST MANNER AVODING ALL INTIMIDATION. YOU HAVE SHOWN THE RIGHT BEGINNERS GUIDANCE ENCOURAGING THE ENTHUSIASTS TO MOVE FORWARD.
THIS IS THE RIGHT APPROACH LEADING TO THE USAGE, STEP BY STEP AND TELLING THE USER IN CLEAR TERMS THE OVERALL PICTURE OF LAYOUT MAKING AND WHICH FORMS THE VERY BASICS TO USE EVEN MORE COMPLEX SOFTWARES LIKE ORCAD.
I CONGRATULATE YOU FOR DOING AND EXPLAINING IT.

0:06 No, they are not PCB Boards, that is like saying LCD Display. It's either PCB or Printed Circuit Board, or even PC board .. but not PCB Board. Just as it isn't Liquid Crystal Display Display, it's not Printed Circuit Board Board.

Its maybe something worth learning and testing. I'll give comment if I get it tested.
But it looks simulating is not easy with this tool, even the calculator can help overcome some simpler cases.. need more time to check.
It might need bond wire modeling and some integration with ASIC tools and hspice, etc.
I might not be able to do some serious electromagnetic simulations, even the use of the transmission line is 1st step. Or not good for scientific study of the RF systems. It might be best of the free tools and not sure if it has some more extensions to work with.
