I'm a complete beginner to electronics and was feeling pretty overwhelmed trying to understand KiCad. This video gives concise instructions in a very understandable way. Thanks for such an excellent video.
Thanks for this excellent how-to. New KiCad users (like me) can get up to speed on the basics of designing schematics without having to browse the manual.
Thanks for the great videos! I’m not an expert in kicad but one thing I have learned is that you can also use Annotate to change the component designator (R? -> R1 C?->C1 and so on). It will annotate all the components at once
Ed Kishbaugh On occasion I have tinkered with small electronic projects a few years ago but the past year I've become very interested in it! I'm 69 yrs. old so learning comes slower for me. Started with easyEDA but it doesn't print out pcb tracks correctly. Last week I switched to using KiCAD! Many thanks to you Sir, I have learned it!! Thank you so much your videos on KiCAD , slowly explaining each step clearly. This KiCAD is really nice!!! Thank you again!!! Subscribed!!!!
Nice tutorial! With so many 'free' or small cost tools of this kind out there, it can be hard to decide which one to use. Some institutions REQUIRE a specific tool but I am trying to decide on a tool for MY students bsed on cost and avialability of good tutorials. Your explanations are clear and intuitive. Thanks!
I was unable to use KiCad on my MacBook Pro in the past because, for whatever reason, my install did not include the symbol libraries. This video inspired me to dig a little deeper this time, and I was able to download them and configure the application to locate the libs this time. Cheers! :)
I believe that I like your older version of KiCad better than that of today's, as the graphics seem to be better, and you had to create a netlist via a toolbar button. You still have to do that today, but there's no button, which I would like to see added back. They claim that the schematic and PCB apps are more integrated, but... You are correct about JLC, as their prices are great. I like their Gerber viewer, too, and uploading those files gives you a very quick quote. A much better website than the others.
Nice work, can you please do an instructional how to video of a high quality graffix circuit board? With the appropriate power supply, input/outputs(With your exceptional price/function/testing methodology. Compact modular plastic design component prototype. Able to plug in components to other computer to start. Aluminum CNC face trim led display for wherever you end up Sir. As a plumber, your relatable breakdowns are appreciated
This is a very good video that explains how to create your own pcbs. I got to the last part on how to generate net lists. Unfortunately my KiCAD interface is missing many of the tools on the toolbar. I guess the version I have they've removed many of these tools. How can I generate the last bit ? No net list generator? Thanks, 🙁
I look forward to your series....I played with KiCad about the time it went from 4 to 5.0 and found it messy to install and library logic was odd...what versions are you using?
Is there a complete beginners guide how do you know what you need on the board to do what you want. I want the heating element to come on and hold a specific temperature for X amount of time. I don't know what parts i need to power the heating element then monitor the temp and turn off after X time
used to the way eagle navigates the schematic and board view, if i can figure a way to set kicad to do that, i'll probably like it instead of suffering through.
Good morning, this a question for the host or anyone in the comment section. What is a good rule when make track sizes on a PCB? big is better if you have the space or small. examples: 5V power line 3V power line signal line Thanks in advance
question about Kicad I have made a board but when I have it in the pcbnew part how do I lock the size of the board so as I move the parts the dont make it bigger or smaller. I have certain parts always on the edge of the board and I want to have a few millimetres from part to edge of PCB. Thankyou for any assistance and subscribed.
Ed Kishbaugh here. I really need help to say the least!!!! When drawing electrical tracks connecting the components I'm getting errors after running DRC. I zoom in close so I can be as accurate as humanly possible to connect components. Keep getting errors. Can't proceed any further!! Checked out mouse in Wndows , OK Uninstalled KiCAD! Cleaned computer up. Redownloaded KiCAD! Changed out mouse!!! Still the same thing. Very fustrated!! Don't have the answer!! Appreciate any help!
Question: great Video first off, I am having trouble finding out how to get a footprint for a 10K trimmer pot THT, would really appreciate any help! Thank you so much, really Like you videos!
Well, design rule checker throws 2 warnings, one of which is: ErrType(3): Pin connected to other pins, but not driven by any pin @(46.99 mm, 34.29 mm): Pin 1 (Power input) of component #PWR0101 is not driven (Net 1).
Huh. Much less scary than I thought this stuff was. I kinda get how Palmer Lucky was able to figure out VR stuff after tinkering with this stuff for a few years.
at 13:14 . ......please explain how you got the detail of this J1 using keyboard ??? I am shure you overlooked to point out how a Noob would get it to appear Magically like you got it done here !!!?
The datasheet is normally provided by the website you bought the component from. If you don't have a datasheet for your particular component, then you can use a ruler/calipers to measure the component & look through the available footprints to find a match.
@@Schematix Thanks for the quick response.....but....My problem is that i have to learn keyboard shortcuts/strokes to access the Dip data . I guess, you are not aware that it takes time for Noobs like me to learn this unless you point it out helpfully. Thanks once again.
Great tutorial! But, unfortunately, I'm not happy using JLCPCB because their silkscreen can be a little off compared to others and they add that tracking number :/ About tutorial - Don't manually edit reference number, just use annotate tool :)
On the tracking number - if you scroll down on the order page, there's an option that says "Remove order number" - it adds a couple of dollars. Would that do what you want? Excellent tutorial btw :)
Thanks for the feedback! I really do notice and appreciate my regular views/commenters. Thanks for the support! I plan on extending this series to cover most topics in Kicad
I really wish you had have explained how you undid the wires to place the global labels. You lost me there, so I had to leave it be and couldn't undo my mistakes. I'm 2/3 through and have to take a break from frustration. I pay for Fusion 360, so I'm not completely lost, but it did feel like you went through VERY quickly with no net, so to speak. I really like all of your stuff, so this is frustration coming out. All apologies, but also please tell me very clearly how to undo my mistakes when making a tutorial. Thank you
Can you SHOW me how to start off with the ground plane first, on the pcb? ALL on one side of the pcb! No one can make a video and show me how to do this. Is it that hard to do? The circuit has 50 components.
I would find it much easier if i could use autoCAD to make a pcb for LED diodes :( this software is such a pain for me :( i could do what im trying to do in autocad much faster
That's the oddest and clumsy representation of a 555 timer with the pin numbers in odd places compared to universally represented 555 printout in other cad programs.

Thank you so much for this series! You explain things perfectly. Also I cannot believe how cheap custom PCBs are!
Excellent presentation. Very clear and concise... WELL DONE!!! 10/10
Just what the doctor ordered, this will make my project a bit tidier. looking forward to next vid, thanks, subscribed.

I can tell I’d really like this guy
Woohoo that looks so much easier than back in the day, when I was making circuit boards. Can't remember the software apart from it was running on DOS.
And you wouldn't have had a 'fancy' 3D preview of your PCB I'll bet ;) (that's coming in part 2)
@@Schematix And before DOS was PnP (Pencil and Paper). Didn't know what I was doing, but I had fun.
@@ron.owensby I did mine direct to the board with an etch resist pen. Don't miss that one bit!
@@Schematix idk what should I instal for windows 64bit? osdn or cern or futurware? help
Yes - this is the best KiCAD tutorial
One of the clearest KiCad demos I've seen, thank you 👍
great video! looking forward to the next parts!
Excellent content! I wish I had seen your video when I first started using KiCAD.
Free Software is GOOD!
Great Scott viewers here?
Excellent video. Thanks!
Nice Job. Clear and easy to follow.
Fabulous video, thanks for posting
Thanks for this, super clear and enjoyable to watch. Good on ya!

Vote up, nice video clip, thanks for sharing :)
Great video
Do we need to define a solder mask? or is it automatic at jlc pcb end
Cheers
Came in and bookmarked JLC for later. That's a great price so I can afford to make the odd mistake!
👍👍👍

Why do wires sometimes not snap to the component leads in Schematics?
How do I set the parameters so that I don't have to keep changing the size of the vias and track widths when I add a new ones?
Life-saver

Do you need a footprint for each +9V connection?
where is part 3?
Easyeda offers everything
Can u copy and paste a gba schematic onto a different size pcb for modding?

You're probably using a common 3296 trimmer? Assuming you are this is the footprint I use: "Potentiometer_THT:Potentiometer_Bourns_3296W_Vertical"
Thanks alot

How do you tweak it to use symbols not use by US. Isn't there an international/ANZ standard?
