-I wouldn't be doing any better tbh. I managed to forget how to measure a rectangular block of wood properly yesterday.
honestly just watching them waving those magnets around made me uneasy-the guy tells you it's rated at ~500lbs of force and is wearing rings (probably not ferrous but still) and has his hand between it and a big chunk of metal.
I just kept snickering when the giant hammer came out @7:00 and then softly clicked against the magnets and Brian just mutters, "Of course."

Also, you could've probably separated the magnets by supergluing the N42 to something stationary. Then just use a solvent like acetone to remove the N42 from the other object.
As for magnetic shielding, some ferromagnetic alloys are used for that purpose, so it is entirely possible that the outside of the safe is magnetic for that reason.
Oh, and, you guys should check out converting a van into a house. The Modern Rogue needs to be able to live rent-free after all.
Those neodymium magnets have a much stronger attraction than most any commercially available glue, especially when connected to each other. The lip on the second magnet was their downfall here, the best way to separate them would've been a shear force to slide them apart but the lip made that impossible
4:55 watching Brian stick his finger between a magnet and the thing it's pulling is just worrying

Angle grinder, boys. Most consumer safes are easily breached with a portable angle grinder and maybe a spare disk, though you wouldn't even use your first one up on something this size. Super informative though, and we all enjoyed the show of it. Hope this helps.
I feel like you should link to your old lock-picking episode on Scam School and label it "part 1" for old time's sake.
Also at 4:50 Brian sticking his finger between a 500lb draw-strength magnet and a metal box makes me very nervous.
A really moderate sized hole, coming right up!
Karg Bear R6S=Good Game
Home safes aren't made to be unbreakable. They are made to take time to break so that burglers just won't even bother. Thieves usually try to move fast and only go after things of high value. This is why they always search for jewelry boxes and other small high value items. Having any safe at all is 90% of the way to protecting your valuables from theft. If it looks secure, it might as well be secure in most cases. A thief will never bother with thermite because it takes a while to use, and draws a lot of attention.
The same is true of basically any lock. Master locks in particular are known for being shockingly easy pick, and a master lockpick can break those open in less than 3 seconds. But just having a lock keeps out the 95% of thieves who are not master lockpicks.
@Anonymous Anonymous
You're right, but it wouldn't be asbestos.
I'm pretty this the first Modern Rogue episode I ever watched after stumbling across it on my suggested page. I'm so happy the UA-cam algorithm actually came in handy :)
FYI, that white powdery layer is probably soft firebrick refractory (or something similar) which is what they use in kilns. firesafes are great at protecting things from fire and generally (relatively) easy to brute force, while high security safes are great at keeping people out (unless they have a six inch angle grinder, 15 minutes, and some carbide or diamond wheels) but extremely vulnerable to fire. A dual purpose safe is where things start getting pricey very quickly. also a more secure safe would have bolts all the way around and thus invulnerable even without the hinge.
That moment when a company like this made a nice security safe and then there comes a video how to open it XD
You guys should totally do something from the bansenshukai it's a legitimate factually accurate ninja manual
You guys had luck, If it was electricified you wouldn't get in there with just Thermite. You would need Thatcher also.
dude the cinematography in this video is super cool
Our crew is awesome.
The editor on this video is so helpful.
If you still have some thermite left and didn't dispose of the safe try flipping it in the side and melt the material round the hinge maybe. It seemed to be much weaker than the pin.
Edit: After reading a bunch of the comments an angle grinder probably would have done the trick too on that
I had one of those safes that I cracked open with a dremel tool. Took maybe 10 minutes. They're... okay... for protecting valuables from fire, but from people, not really.
I love how it says if you don't know what you're doing then don't mess with this stuff ie thermite, my question is then how are Brian and Jason allowed near it?? 😂
"Murphy! We can just use fire and melt the thing!" You guys rocked this one.

That's a fire safe. The outer casing isn't designed to withstand a serious assault. You could get through it in a few minutes with an angle grinder. Still, I love a good thermite video as much as the next man, so it gets a like!
I like how youtubers say don't try this at home or unless you know what you're doing while they do it at home and defintely don't know what they're doing
I feel you should be moving the magnet to induce a current in the solenoid
I feel an angle grinder would work quicker and easier than thermite...
What kind of fire extinguisher did you have there? Just asking because a CO2 unit is worse than useless on a metal fire. Feel free to make a playing with thermite episode and show why you really shouldn't use CO2 on a metal fire.
I was under the impression that only magnesium fires were bad to fight with CO2.
The Aluminum in the reaction will start using the CO2 as an oxygen source, and you will be blowing it around, with molten iron, very exciting!
What can I say but yikes?
@@ComradePhoenix any self oxidizing fire will make CO2 useless because the goal of a CO2 extinguisher is to stop the fire from getting oxygen but if it self oxidizes then yup
David is correct. Furthermore, the only thing you can deprive it of is itself. Once started, it becomes self sustaining. Trying to cool it down isn't reasonable either.

honestly something much more usable in this sort of situation is a thermal lance, which you can make with a length of brake line, some very fine steel wool, a bottle of oxygen, and a long hose. connect the brakeline to the bottle of oxygen with the hose and stuff some ultra fine steel wool in the other end of the break line, light the steel wool (fine enough steel wool will burn under a flame) and slowly start feeding it oxygen until the reaction sustains itself, congratulations, all the cutting power of thermite in a controllable and direct-able package. NightHawkInLight has a great video on this

just take an angle grinder with a cut blade. 5m and you're in. Way less work than thermite.. but doesn't look as cool on camera I suppose.
the military made a version of thermite that can melt steel. its causes toxic fumes though.
The thing with the hook contains a magnet, but is something very different. It is a holding magnet, build to have the strongest field over the gap between inner magnet and cup. The steel cup is a yoke, conducting the magnetic flux. The outer field you use is basically a side effect.
Magnets do not work through metal.
Edit: Magnetic Metals
“Maybe they added a magnet shield” bois if there was a such thing as a magnet shield than we would have free energy perpetual motion Machines easy
there are things you can use to block magnetic fields thats literally how they ship them
Could it be potentially that you move the magnet around the solenoid to create a small electrical current to activate the solenoid?
Buttz A solenoid IS an electromagnet. The attack is about adding an unauthorized magnet from the outside. Once you're inside you can just remove the locking mechanism.
I’ve never done this with magnets; however with steel you can heat it to a temperature which no longer has it’s magnetic properties. It may be interesting to look into.
UA-cam once again suggesting the coolest video.
