Regarding the sample sizes for toiletries, you can also use your regular sized items decanted in travel size containers. That way you don't buy a travel size version everytime! 😊

Another packing tip I use is to pre-plan outfits so I don’t use items randomly and end up with clean clothes that don’t go together. 😂
I actually bring a sheet with photos of the outfits to keep track. 😊

Another great thing about using packing cubes is that if you are frequently on the move for your trip, the cubes can stay in your case and become a drawer-like system to keep everything organised and in place. Alternatively, if staying somewhere for a bit longer and you want to unpack into a wardrobe, simply lift out each fully packed cube and place in wardrobe, no need to handle piles of clothes, takes only seconds to do and you can get on with the fun things in life! Repacking is also a cinch!

It's amazing how much makeup, moisturizer, etc. you can put into eye contact containers. You can label them or color code them with a sharpie. I do what you do by keeping makeup separate from bath and other toiletries, makes it so much simpler. Throw in some S hooks to use if you have to wash out something and hang in shower. I make packing a fun career, ha. Pack your shoes in those plastic bags that we all throw away. Every time I order something, it comes in a bag so I save several for shoes.

These were so great! I used to pack this way when I traveled a lot but then with the pandemic I stopped traveling and all of sudden I didn’t know how to pack anymore! Recently traveling back home for a month via road trip, I filled a giant size suitcase with my whole closet because I was too overwhelmed to “pack smart”. The thing was so heavy and big… I had to drag into each hotel each night we stopped… people must have thought I was such a princess. It was embarrassing. This video reminded me of some of the strategies like the scarf thing and tennis shoe options.
Also, I’ve learned that packing cubes by type (pants in one, shirts in another, workout in another) was a little difficult when it came to being able to see what is in each. I wear a lot of black and unless I had a distinctive color poking through (pink workout bra) I would forget which cube was for what. I recommend buying a few different colors cubes to color code the different types (pants is the blue one, workout is the pink one, etc).

I like to pack with the “clean/dirty cubes” from Eagle Creek no need for laundry bag. When your clothes gets dirty you flip the cube over and put your clothes on the dirty side. The cube remains the same size all the time.

My luggage got lost going to and coming home from Portugal the first time we travelled there and the pictures of the suitcase were invaluable. When there, it was returned to me within 36 hours. When I returned to Canada it took 5 days. I also learned to make sure I have my toothbrush/paste in my carryon along with a change of underwear and a fresh light t-shirt!

Love my packing cubes, too. Finally; so glad to see you using shoe bags. I can’t stand when I see people just shoving their shoes next to undies or other clothing items! In my experience, just using double-zip lock bags of various size works best - light weight, clear, spill proof, takes less room, and is hugely less expensive. There are super size available, great for clothing, and they can all be rolled up tight, the air is expelled, and then zipped. Works like a space bag.

Love these ideas! I invested in a black-themed ensemble of rayon/synthetic dresses, a soft flared blazer, similar to your lightweight black layers ensemble that roll up to nothing, never wrinkle! And are soo comfortable. The black jacket has a pop of colors on the bottom flare,, so it matches black-based multi color dresses, plus bright scarves dress everything up and double as blankets, or sarong-style cover up, and hide the mini-cross-body bag. And it's thin enough to wear under the trench without bulkiness. I had to travel suddenly for 2 month trip when a family member was hospitalized, and one leather duffel had like 10 mix and match outfits. Also, your advice is especially useful for suburbanites who aren't used to city living. After many years living in NYC, basics like comfy closed toed, light-weight leather walking boots and trenches are must-haves, and never sandals nor flip flops outside in the urban streets. (I'm from Florida near the beach where we live in flip flops, but never use them in the city areas), I consider 9 West leather mules a staple so you can "forget your feet" on schlepping trips. 🤗 I also have Big Hair that takes hours to dry, and can't wash it to often, so will begin a trip fresh washed and braided, and reset and fluff as days unfold, bringing only conditioner to reset my curls, so I don't have to carry 5 lbs of hair products 😂 Thanks again! Love your vibrant spirit, and your terrific polished style!

Also, the two gallon size ziplocks are great for shoes and dirty laundry. I use various size ziplocks instead of packing cubes. Great for organizing, they’re clear so you can see through them, and if anyone has ever watched their bag get rained on on the conveyor belt... yeah, you’ll want ziplocks.

This is good for long haul flights. But for short cheap flights in uk there are stricter rules.... For easyJet (uk firm) unless you pay extra you actually only get one bag allowance, for other basic flights the 2nd bag is only a small bag. Basically make sure you know your allowance seen so many people caught out on this.

Lived in Europe (France and Italy) for almost 5 years. While some of this is good advice, a lot of it is hype and opinion. Modest and elegant is good advice; however, it is important to dress comfortable for a lot of walking. For the girly girl that spends a lot of time and money on clothes and makeup about to travel to Europe, feel free to follow this advice. For every other female, you absolutely do not need to take all of this fashion advice to heart. More important than fashion is how you carry yourself. I agree with the comments about loud voices: tone it down so you don’t stick out. Be polite and open-minded. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk around on the streets of cities like you are in a theme park. I think it’s more important to blend in with your body language. European women definitely go hiking, too. Spin your backpack around so you don’t get pick-pocketed.

Great tips, Erin! Definitely goiing to get some packing cubes! One good thing to remember when choosing your carry-on is the weight of the bag itself. The heavier it is, the less you can pack. I'm due for a new carry-on and always need to remind myself of that little tidbit. Between your blog on what to pack and this video, I'm going to actually attempt to do just a carry-on for my trip next month....who doesn't love a challenge!?! Lol. Thanks so much for all this great advice!

Just about everywhere outside the USA, there is a 7 kg limit for carry-on bags. I can't tell you how many Americans I see with their carry-on bags who have complete breakdowns at the check-in counter when they are forced to check their bags often at exorbitant cost. If this is really a once in a lifetime trip, check luggage (pre-book if this is a paid option) and even bring a separate bag for all the souvenirs you're going to buy. It's worth the extra money! Also, many low-cost carriers do not allow a second personal item... I found this out the hard way on Ryan Air when I had a rolling carry-on and a structured handbag. I agree with everything about packing cubes and separate bags for toiletries, cosmetics, electronic chargers, etc.

    • @helendavies1326

Also different airlines specify different sizes for carry on. BA is very generous- huge case and large bag as carry on. Ryan air and Easyjet only allow 1 carry on and it's smaller than the BA allowance. I'm a large lady but find the smaller bag ample for 2 weeks in the summer on Greek Islands. Easier for transporting onto ferries and other transport too

My husband and I travel often and always try to only have carry-ons when going to our destination, especially when traveling out of the USA, coming back we always utilize the packable bag that fit inside our suitcase and check one of the bags. I recommend the Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote Small for your second, under the seat bag. It’s the same size as the one you showed, but it has a separate bottom section, and a slot/sleeve to slip it over the handle of your roller bag so it doesn’t flop off. Also a super durable canvas. The latest change I've made for travel day is wearing pants that don't hit the airplane bathroom floor. For me I wear comfy Nic & Zoe leggings, j crew knit tunic, extra large scarf, outerwear layers so I don't pack. Bare face with simple moisturizer to keep face from drying out during flight time.

Linen dresses are great to travel with especially for Rome . You rinse out at night and hang straight away and do NOT iron as that is the look . When you hang the dress up when damp just give it a good shake and pat down and by the morning the wrinkles will be a lot less but please don’t iron . Take a couple of hangers in the bottom of your bag NOT metal if ‘carry on ‘as the ones in hotels are often attached to the rail in the closet .

My proudest pro-packing experience was a trip I took to Arizona. The temps ranged from 30 degrees to 90 degrees on different legs of the trip. I packed the heavy coat and warm clothes for the Grand Canyon and pressed them flat in a space bag to place at the bottom of the suitcase. Then I packed the shorts and lighter items for Phoenix on top. I didn’t touch the space bag until that portion of the trip. Worked out great.

I love the suggestion of deciding on a color palette. I'm older so I want to pack as light as possible. So I am always looking for light luggage.

I like to pack skirts/pants and tops rather than a dress, especially if every top goes with every bottom and vice versa. That way you have more outfits but if you do bring a dress you may be able to wear it like a skirt with a t shirt that you tie at the waist. I also like to bring t-shirts that have a V-neck. You can wear it backwards giving you two shirts in one. For cooler climates a cardigan is nice - wear it open with t-shirt or turtle neck, wear it closed on its own like a v neck , tie it at the waist or wear it backwards for crew neck at he front and you could leave a few buttons undone at the back for a sexy look. A shirt dress can be a dress with or without a belt but can also be worn like a kimono over jeans or leggings. Versatility is the key to packing light. I received the AWAY carry on for Christmas with the battery embedded and accessible while waiting for your flight.

Wow! You thought of everything (including the links - thank you), great video! My husband and I traveled to Europe over Christmas to see our son and D.I.L. and I essentially did everything you mentioned, minus the cubes (but, I need them). It was a challenge, but my all black wardrobe and shoes did the trick. I used scarves and hats to switch things up. I also wore a black puffer vest to help extend my options. I wore it under my coat on the plane and it doubled as a pillow.👍🏼 😁

In addition to leaving expensive jewelry at home, I would also advise considering leaving expensive handbags/obvious designer brands displayed when visiting second and third world countries. They can also make you a target. Thank you for your thorough packing advice! I'm a pretty good packer, but I love seeing how other people do it, too:)

Thanks for the video. My carry-on 360 degree wheel luggage is fabric and is super lightweight, less than 4 lbs. I make sure than I can put this luggage in the overhead compartment by myself. I lay everything out on the bed what I'm packing and take a picture. I roll my clothes and put them in ziploc bags instead of packing tubes so I can see everything. I take a picture of everything after they're in ziploc bags ready to get in the luggage. It's amazing how much space I can save. I never pack too much stuff for a month's travel to Europe to save space for souvenirs. Of course, it helps that I'm a petite small frame woman. But I also bring workout clothes.

My tips: I tie a cloth ribbon (the same type/color) to each item of baggage to easily see it from a distance. I put my clothes in vacuum sealed bags to save room and to keep my clothes safe from any possible leakage, etc.. Before waiting in the security line I have put my electronics, liquids, etc in an easy carry collapsible bag to quickly and easily put in the security bins and to quickly leave the line after security.
