Me too! I forgot to mention that he had bought into the Pignose Amplifier compamy, and so a lot of the stickers on that famous telecaster were pignose stickers
Have to go with “Liberation” side 4 CTA To this day I think it is the greatest extended solo in rock music. He was on fire as was the entire band. His banjo type strumming and he went 17 minutes without repeating himself and there were no cliches. Amazing
Kath's fantastic vocal abilities shine in "Wishing You Were Here". Cetera wrote it but knew he needed a baritone for the lead vocals. Absolutely beautiful song
I had such a crush on Terry Kath, I loved his smile and watching the band on TV. I remember that day the died and I cried all day. Such a tragic and senseless loss. RIP Terry Kath, he will never be forgotten.
I was a limo driver and on 21 May 1977, my boss and I drove two cars to LAX to pick up Chicago. Terry and Walt happened to get in my car. I drove them to a house in the SF Valley, I think. I remember one of them complimented me on my driving. Sad, this ending, sad.
After graduating college, I went to work in radio. We ran a contest for front-row seats and backstage passes to see Chicago. I couldn't enter because I was an employee so I put my girlfriend's name in the drawing and she won. The concert was awesome, with live horns and all it was a great production. The cool part was going back and hanging with the band though...They let us chill with them for about 2 hours and told me many road stories. It was a great experience. Working in radio I have met a ton of singers and bands and I have had some great times but as far as being personable and down to earth nothing compares to the time we had with Chicago
If you haven't already, check out Chicago Live at Tanglewood, you can find it on youtube. Recorded in July of 1970. One of the best live recordings of any band I've seen. Terry is phenomenal, and to watch him sing and play live is a something special.
One of my favorite childhood memories was when we stayed at a cabin resort on a small lake in Wisconsin owned by Terry's parents. Gold records on the wall the were in the main resort house where we'd listen to "Old Days" on Kath's jukebox. I believe this was Summer of 1976.
I saw them live in their heyday when they released their first album. They were phenomenal. While I thought Terry was a great guitarist, my favorite part of the band was the horn section. Their style was unique among all of the current top 40 bands. Nobody else was playing the style of music that they played. Rest in peace, the great Terry Kath. Thank you Jordan for telling their story. ❤
My choir teacher in high school said, if you were a band in the 70's, and you had a horn section, it was almost mandatory at clubs to cover Chicago songs.
Check out the bands "Lighthouse," from Canada, "Mandrill" from New York and "Cool and the Gang" and "Osibasa." Not all of them top 40 acts but all with amazing horn sections if you dig that sound. Cheers.
Crazy, I just looked up Terry's cause of death a few hours ago after seeing a post of "I'm a Man" on FB. So sad. He was an amazing musician. Thanks for all of the great content Jordan.
Particularly the outro, it opens up and then explodes with a flurry of bombastic notes that I must say was capture well by the Columbia Records production. That particular album CTA, was probably one of the best recordings that I have heard. Danny's drums and Peter's bass sound extraordinary.
Just watched his daughter’s documentary, it was great thank you for recommending it. I can’t believe how beautiful his wife still looks . It was very touching
I loved Chicago growing up (including the horns), and have heard about Terry Kath's sad death. Thanks for the info on the documentary. Getting ready to watch it in a bit.
What a great companion piece to his daughter's "Finding Terry" documentary! I appreciate some of the extra information you're giving that I didn't know about the origins of the band even though I knew a lot of it. (Your recollection of Terry playing a Frank Zappa song when the club audience demanded a slow ballad to dance to is awesome 👍 PS--Go Nats! (DC area guy who's been living in Phoenix for two decades)
Hi Jordan! Chicago happens to be one of my all time fave bands I grew up listening to their music in the 70's this tragic story triggered off lots of good memories as well, thank you & take care.
I just saw Chicago at The Forum on Sept 6th. One if my all time favorite groups to see in concert. Money worth spending (if you've never seen them). I also visited Terry Kath's grave one day that they had that section open. 🙏🏼
Peter Cetera will not be in any Chicago documentaries, but was interviewed for Michelle Kaths documentary about her dad. That shows what respect and brotherhood they had being the two guitarists up front, and main vocalists along with Robert Lamm...
I love this ❤ I grew up in and listening to the 60s and 70s music and love Chicago, I have many fond memories! But I didn't know this story. Thank you Jordan, great vlog ❤
Thank you for this, Jordan. Your vlog was informative and touching. I immediately went to watch the documentary. Still wiping tears away. I learned a lot from you and even more from the documentary. I was 9 when he passed so was unaware of most of his story. I am so glad to have a new respect for him. Time to dust off my records and listen again with a greater appreciation.
Jordan, just wanted to say Thank you. For all the work you do putting stories together. Just amazing and you have been for all the years I have followed you. Chicago was an amazing group I have always thought that they were extremely talented all of them. You bring both both music and pop history to many people who would have never known the folks you bring back to life through your videos. Thanks again!

I just watched the Documentary on Terry. It always seems like the very best musicians meet with an early and tragic end. I thinking the roady wouldn't return Michells calls because she was talking about wanting her dads guitars and he didn't want to part with them if he even had them still. Thankfully, it all worked out in the end. *Great Story as always Jordan*
I had the opportunity to see Terry play 8 times. I can't put into words how great he was. I was a 22-year-old kid, just got my cup of coffee on my way to work when I heard the tragic news of his passing on the radio. The dynamic of the band changed forever. Watch Chicago Live at Tanglewood in 1970. If the guitar solo of 25 or 6 to 4 doesn't blow you away, nothing will.
Didn't start out a fan but a girlfriend had me take her to a couple shows in Indy and got me onboard. She was devastated when Terry had his accident, it was her 1st name too. Still have their best vinyl.
I watched that documentary about a year ago and just as it was getting finished up my wife walked into the room and I still had tears in my eyes and she asked me what was wrong and I told her I just watched the most awesome music documentary about Terry Kath. That story and everything that went with it really got to me, beautifully done!
MORE important than Cetera in the bands development,as they would admit,Terry was the band Chicago and without him they never would've achieved the success they all enjoyed.

Hard to believe if he had lived he would have been 78! They were here in Las Vegas a few times. It's hard for me to understand how fast life turns. Hold on kids, if you turn twice, you will be 70 plus.
I was in 6th grade when I heard about Terry Kath. My whole family were musicians so I was very familiar with Chicago. I remember sitting outside the school and I cried. I will never forget that day 😢
Wow Jordan thank you so much for making this vlog about Terry Kath. Chicago was my favorite band in the early to mid 70’s and I listened to them CONSTANTLY! My first concert was Chicago at University of Maryland Cole Field House in 1973-4. How did I not know about Terry’s story? Anyway, I found the documentary but I also stumbled on Chicago playing Wishing You Were Here on New Years Eve 1974 with The Beach Boys singing backing vocals. AWESOME is all I can say. Thanks again Jordan!! Love to you Jah and Katie❤️
Thanks Jordan, I became a CHICAGO FAN during their CTA YEARS in 1969 and I’m still a Fan today 2024, it was sad about Terry Kath, Thanks Again for this Heartfelt Video……. I am a Fan of yours too from Norfolk Massachusetts, Stay Strong and Healthy Jordan and keep those videos coming
Been playing music all my life. It wasn’t Terry’s guitar playing that inspired me to play guitar. It was his voice. It just moved me when I was young. He had that Ray Charles sound in his voice. Thanks for covering this. It made my night!
Thanks for the vlog Jordan. I’ve been listening to a lot of Chicago lately. Their early stuff with Terry in lead guitar was the best. The live recordings at Tangle-wood are the best.
RIP Terry Kath.💐Thank you Jordan for the well done story of Terry Kath’s life but sad death. Love Chicago’s music and have their greatest hits album. Nice seeing Jah again too❣
I remember when Terry died, it was so sad. I was 19 and never got to see him play, they never came to my area. He had so much SOUL. I hope he was able to find the peace that escaped him here on earth💔🕊
The irony is on CTA's debut there is the song South CA Purples and the lyrics are "I hate this L.A. I must be in the wrong place". Now he's stuck there forever. 😒 Well done narration. I knew about his Russian roulette death, but didn't know he was imitating Taxi Driver. It's just too bad his favorite film wasn't Sound of Music.
I had the pleasure of seeing Chicago live at Tanglewood in 1970; I sat maybe 50 feet from the stage. I was only 15 at the time, and my older sister had to drive me to the concert. Quite a night, there's a video of that concert here on YT as it's a classic concert. They also had John Sebastian, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band that night.
Was able to catch the Nuremberg Rock Jam in 77 with the original 7. In 2016 at the Hollywood Bowl Nothing and nobody will ever replace Cetera and Kath!
My dad’s band got to open for Chicago way back in the 70s and he said Terry was the most amazing guitarist he had heard. His bands guitarist was blown away by his playing. My dad was a huge Chicago fan and turns me into them at a young age. I remember my dad loved to listen to their song The Approaching Storm. You singers it on the radio but it’s an instrumental with the horn section and it’s amazing. Almost sounds like what you’d heard from the Blues Brothers lol. I had started working local crew and got to work some Chicago shows and met many of the original members back in the 90s. I remember coming home with a handful of guitar picks Keith Howland had given me. My dad loved that. RIP Terry. RIP dad
Terry's mother played and taught him the banjo; you can hear a lot of that in Terry's strumming. He also would buy light guitar strings; he would throw away the low E string, and put a banjo string on the high E to get a certain sound.
Thanks for making this great video on a very underappreciated (or underknown) guitarist, and for the heads up on his daughter's documentary. Here's a little band trivia, founding member James Pankow's little brother John eventually followed him out to L.A. and became a pretty successful actor (To Live and Die in L.A., Mad About You).
Jordan, thank you for suggesting this subject on Terry Kath and Chicago. I did mention this to you awhile back and now you came into this subject on him.
Chicago was never the same after he passed. I saw them 2 times when Terry was with the band. 1975 and 1977. They didn’t disband for long. Came back in 1978 with a new record. My first favourite band. Listen to the song Dialogue.
Yeah, just a couple of months of being "disband", but i think they didnt know what to do originally with such a huge loss to the band.. he was seemingly the creative force
Terry's brother, Rodney was the school cop at Arlington Heights Il, Arlington High School. Remember when we kind of figured it out, suddenly the School Cop was cool.
Terry Kath was phenomenal. I loved his Telecaster.
Me too! I forgot to mention that he had bought into the Pignose Amplifier compamy, and so a lot of the stickers on that famous telecaster were pignose stickers
@@DazewithJordantheLion I was aware of that too. He knows how to decorate his axe.
@@DazewithJordantheLion He was also a huge Chicago Blackhawks/hockey fan. He got his Blackhawks sticker on his telecaster.
Chicago was at its best with Terry Kath, no doubt.
Terry was the soul of Chicago and that first lineup with Cetera and the original members was the best.
Exactly 💯 😊
Terry Kath's guitar solo in 25 or 6 to 4 was the greatest guitar solo in Rock history in my opinion. Thanks for this experience Jordan.
It was phenomenal
according to me it's the Terry's solo on south california purples on the CTA album which is the most fabulous solo of rock music
Live at Tanglewood 😅
@@joegonzalez1941 Tanglewood smokes.

Very good point, Pete's first Chicago song on record was "Where Do We Go from Here" on Chicago II. A much needed song in today's times.
I had such a crush on Terry Kath, I loved his smile and watching the band on TV. I remember that day the died and I cried all day. Such a tragic and senseless loss. RIP Terry Kath, he will never be forgotten.
Amen sister! I was in my senior year and cried as well at the news of his passing. RIP Terry Kath.
One of the best musicians ever, I’ll never forget the day I heard he’d passed. Absolutely devastated.
Colour My World is one of the greatest songs ever written. It’s soo beautiful.
That song was played at a lot of weddings and receptions in the 70s!
@@lisaa8795 And at high school football halftime shows surprisingly.
Written by Jimmy Panco(trombone) Sung by Terry.
Indeed 😊
Terry Kath, which of us still don't get chills when you think about the solo on 25 or 6 to 4.
Yes
Terry is a criminally underrated guitarist.
I was a limo driver and on 21 May 1977, my boss and I drove two cars to LAX to pick up Chicago. Terry and Walt happened to get in my car. I drove them to a house in the SF Valley, I think. I remember one of them complimented me on my driving. Sad, this ending, sad.

Quite a night, there's a video of that concert here on YT as it's a classic concert. They also had John Sebastian, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band that night.
Jordan you are a great story narrator. You explain the facts so well. Love your content.
Thank you, my friend.. i love history.. i appreciate the kind words
I ❤ Chicago. Thank you Jordan
Was able to catch the Nuremberg Rock Jam in 77 with the original 7. In 2016 at the Hollywood Bowl
Nothing and nobody will ever replace Cetera and Kath!
Great video Jordan! Terry was an incredible musician.
SO GLAD YOU ARE DOING THIS ONE,,, I LOVE TERRY KATH......THANK YOU JORDAN! 🎼🎵🎶🎵
I liked Chicago they were a good band. Too bad about Terry Kaths.passing nice resting place for him. Good vlog jordan
Very cool!!
On his grave marker are the words Memories of Love. That is a song on Chicago II. Terry wrote and sings on that song.
@@DazewithJordantheLion him and Robert Lamm. Robert still has the band out there. New record a couple of years ago.
Yes, i saw that.. hes the last remaining songwriter of the band still performing, i think
Terry's brother, Rodney was the school cop at Arlington Heights Il, Arlington High School. Remember when we kind of figured it out, suddenly the School Cop was cool.
my favourite guitarist terry kath lived life on the edge. terry kath documentary by his daughter the best documentary i ever watched.
You got to be careful! Love the video's Jordan be safe out there its a crazy world! 👍🏽
