- Best grouse dog work possibly ever recorded. Bird Dogs Afield visits Long Gone Kennels and films Long Gone Madison on a grouse hunt in New Hampshire. A must video for pointing dog enthusiasts and English Setter fans.

I have the ultimate respect for Mr. Hughes and his track record in the cover-trial world. The fact is, teaching a dog to sit has little to do with them sitting on point. That is OLD school philosophy.
I also didn't see any retrieves but I might have missed that part. Another OLD wives tale is that you don't want your dog retrieving because it could break on point in a trial. ....wrongo.
Both of these fallacies have more to do with the training/trainer than the dog. I have always hunted my trial dogs and trialed my hunting dogs. My dogs retrieve to hand. I have also had respectable success in horseback and cover trials - admittedly, not at the level that even approaches that of Mr. Hughes. Then again, I didn't dedicate my whole life or make a career of trialing.
Training dogs is a journey, not a destination. If you don't evolve with the sport, it will leave you behind. Today, I cringe at how I used to train dogs not-so-long-ago, even though I have developed and helped develop trial champions in the past.
Again, I say this with the outmost respect/reverence for Mr. Hughes.
Thanks for sharing. Love Madison!
@25:45 Dave Hughes says, "This is called heaven"........I would agree!
Great dog work and damn fine shooting!
just unbeleavable im 34 yrs old i will have a bird dog before it's my time in northern mi love to hunt the popal thickets never killed a woodcock but have huted grouse an theres lots of them in our woods good huntin boys i like the vid got the heart pumpin an that dog by golley she's a bute just a dandy!
It's called "flagging". Every dog that flagged in this video had a bird that walked off and they needed to relocate the bird. Or their tail was flagging after they were steady to wing and shot. Either case it's completely normal or acceptable. Every point where a bird was produced was staunch and gorgeous. These dogs are at the top of their breed.
Neil knows bird dogs
Super hunt!
Sweet hunt
Great video. I have a 9-mo-old Ryman. He is very birdy but not yet pointing. I love watching videos like these. Unfortunately, some of the comments are negative. Does everything need to be a debate these days?
this was a great video and it was funny great shot on the tree lol don't feel bad I've taken out a group of berry brush weeds with a 20 gauge when I was shooting at a squirrel on the ground but my dog ran it down anyways.
^GSP guy with a complex.
What is that gun you keep fondling?
guess : Winchester 21 pigeon ?
It would be nice to have a dog to flush 'em here in Minny, but I need the help retrieving birds. Especially early in the season, it can be hard to find 'em even when they drop right in front of you. I've been losing way too many, and that is unacceptable in my book.
What kind of trees where those
What happened on the first point? Did the bird stay down?
Is that Rodney Dangerfield
there is speckles
To bad they dont retrieve
ラフラフ愚痴!
tail should not be shaking while on pointing.
If the dog work is so good where are all retrievies. Looks like dave treats his dogs like a piece of equipment instead of his hunting partner
or you can make them sick and waste money at the vet and have a dog that gets the shits and vommits everywhere. that food is scientifically formulated for a healthy dog, giving them everything they need to function perfectly..
and that is English Pointer??? WTF??
look at European dogs!
check Italian or french videos and u'll see what is called POINTER
To many cemercials
