What I didn't address in this video was the recent Western Digital Red Plus NAS hard drive controversy. If your hard drives logged three years of uptime, the Synology NAS will have an alert to replace the hard drive. My 2020 2TB hard drives have three years of uptime but not alert to replace them. That problem appears to be limited to Synology NAS.

Bundling the cables like that looks neat!

I set up my TrueNAS server in late 2012 and it's still going strong. The hardware (FM2 system with A88X chipset, 8 onboard SATA ports plus a 2 port card, 8x2TB Hitachi in 2 zvols) was pretty static over the past 10 years. TrueNAS is a really neat product, which hasn't caused any big issues. Soon I'll re-configure it, more power efficient CPU and fewer, mch bigger drives. The 8 Hitachi have done pretty well, since I bought them brand new in 2009.

I am not sure why you said your controller limited the size of your disks. Maybe you are missing speed with size?

The 3Gbps SAS controller card limited hard drives to 2TB in size. if I got a larger hard drive, only the first 2TB will be partitioned and formatted. The 6Gbps SAS controller card limited hard drives to 128PB in size.
