    Make sure you save your lumber receipts! I just finished a homemade boat, and the state of Minnesota is making me jump through hoops to get it registered and licensed. They keep saying, we need to see receipts. Anyway, this never occurred to me over the years it took me to finish my boat.I didn’t save any, so now I have to convince them somehow, to let me license it. I suppose they’re just being safe. People do steal boats, and remove the serial number tag. Then say it’s homemade. So, save those receipts!

    • @HANDIY
      @HANDIY  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks for the tip, I don't think I have the receipts anymore either. Do they need the receipts to figure out the value of your boat? Or just to prove that you built it? Maybe the videos of my build could be good proof of ownership ? :)

    • @michaelnelson9140
      @michaelnelson9140 3 роки тому +1

      Yes. For tax purposes. I have to submit a form to Dnr. And they will review it. Of course I have plenty of photos to prove I built it. It’s just frustrating that I have to jump through all these hoops. I’m chomping at the bit to get it on the water.

    • @michaelnelson9140
      @michaelnelson9140 2 роки тому +4

      Update. I sent a letter to Minnesota Dnr. Explaining my situation along with the official form required. And I sent four photos of the boat. One for each side. Anyway, I got approved! And it only took a couple weeks. So it wasn’t so bad. I will admit I was freaking out after all the work building it. But I’m good to go. And I think Minnesota is probably one of the more difficult states to deal with. But the lesson is still there. Save all receipts and document everything. Build away my friends!😀

    • @HANDIY

      I did not use marine grade ply. But I did use an excessive amount of epoxy. I check the boat after every session to make sure there are no dings that penetrate to the plywood. So far its holding up very well. Lets see what happens over time.

    • @georgewashington7444
      @georgewashington7444 Рік тому

      For a small boat like this Exterior grade PW is fine. On a bigger boat 13’ + that your investing 1-3yrs building I use Marine Grade and still glass/Epoxy exterior it will last indefinitely if done correctly.

    What thickness ply are you using?

    • @HANDIY
      @HANDIY  3 роки тому +2

      9mm Plywood. The plans are designed for 6mm but living in a country with limited resources gives no other option. I'll make up for some of the extra weight by not adding stiffeners.

    • @HANDIY
      @HANDIY  10 місяців тому +1

      regular plywood, unfortunately obtaining marine grade where i live is very hard, but its definitely a better choice if you can get your hand on it. The boat i still working great with not issues so far, but i check the boat regularly to make sure the plywood is not exposed anywhere. Just like a surfboard i need to stay on top of any dings.

    PLEASE NEVER USE A PLYWOOD BUTT BLOCK. It's the weakest joint you can use and makes a hard spot preventing a fair curve.
    A tapered scarf joint is the strongest but somewhat of a pain to make.
    BEST alternative is a Payson fiberglass butt joint. You can view them being made on UA-cam.
