- This week we have a 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab 4x4 powered by the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque. That means it's time for another highway MPG test to see what fuel economy the Pentastar V6 will put down on our highway MPG loop. We fill up using the 2 click method and drive our 172 kilometer (107.7 mile) highway MPG loop while trying to maintain a speed of 113 kilometers per hour or 70 miles per hour. What did this truck get after all the dust settled? You might be surprised!

Thing that gets me is people forget that V6 engines we have these days are as powerful or even more than the older generation V8's.
Hp but not torque. Need displacement or turbo.
@@christopherking2012 Compare the Pentastar to a Ford 4.6, Vortec 4.8, or Dodge 4.7 and actually has comparable torque and higher HP with greater efficiency.
Exactly. My 1994 mustang GT 5.0. 215 hp. My 2012 3.7 v6 in my Jeep. 210 hp.

@@dhdh8314 40 lb-ft is a very noticeable difference. Also a lot more torque at lower rpms.
One more important thing when looking at the V6 vs the V8. RAM requires 89 octane in the V8, but only 87 octane in the V6. So if you're getting 10% better MPG in the V6 and you're saving 5-10% on the cost of gas by getting regular vs mid grade there's a compound savings.
For instance... If you're paying $3.50/gal for the HEMI at 19mpg and $3.25/gal for the V6 at 21mpg, you're effectively paying 18.4c/mi in the HEMI, but only 15.5c/mi in the V6 then you're paying 18% more per mile in the HEMI than the V6.
89 is recommended not required
You can run the 5.7 on 87, a bunch of people do.

I took mine from Detroit to Niagara Falls round trip with idling for one straight hour and with wife and three kids 1 hour traffic stop and go and I got 24 mpg .

Depending on the miles you drive the V6 can save a significant amount of money on fuel.
I think the pentastar would shine in the town, at highway speeds especially pushing a hard head wind the hemi probably would be just as good. Great test, love hand calculated results.
We find in northern bc Canada Cummins diesel is best with load and the head winds on the Alaska Hwy
Thanks for the video. I trying to decide between the new Grand Cherokee WL, and Ram 1500. Two different animals for sure. With the Ram it's the engine choice that I'm grappling with, and this video has helped me decide the 3.6L would be fine for the way I'll use the truck. And, if it's like the 3.6L in my Wrangler the mpgs improved with more miles (at approx. 8K miles)on the engine. However, with the size on the Ram I'd be happy with the mileage you achieved. Again thanks for the help in making my decision.
I see about 5600 km on the odometer on the test vehicle, which is about 3500 miles. From my own experience with the Pentastar V6 (2016 Challenger) I will say that mpg continued to improve over the first 10,000 miles, at which point I was exceeding the EPA hwy mpg, and have continued to do so, even at sustained speeds in excess of 80 mph. That being said, the trip computer ALWAYS overstates mpg, which I've repeatedly checked by hand calculation. After 45,000+ trouble free miles on my Pentastar V6, I couldn't be happier with performance. Love the 8 speed ZF trans it's mated with too. From what I've read on the forums and actual customer reviews, most indicate liking how eTorque makes stop/start pretty much seamless, which is a good thing IMO. There have been some reported eTorque failures that occurred soon after taking delivery, so maybe there are some bugs to work out.
I had the same experience. My pentastar ram 1500 only really attained full efficiency after about 15000km (10k miles) at which point it exceeded the rating on the window sticker. It was such a good motor/ transmission combo I just spent 69k on a new higher trim truck with the same motor, and had no use/need for that greedy v8 hemi.

Comments from a 2014 Chrysler 300 AWD owner. I have recorded every gas fill for the last 120,000 km. The mileage indicator on the dash usually indicates .5 liters per 100 km less than reality. My older Chryslers were more accurate. I have exceeded EPA estimates many times. My best mileage is usually right around 105 km/hour, in actual driving I found slowing to 90 gave me slightly worse mileage. The power is adequate for the Vancouver to Calgary run, although I would like an SRT8 for those short 2 lane passes around some scared motorhome drivers. I agree with those who say that the 8 speed makes that motor practical in heavy vehicles as that engine needs to rev before it makes power. On another note, this is the quietest engine I have owned over the last 25+ cars.

Great info. I had no idea the EPA speeds were 48 & 60 mph.
Running same route my laramie ecodiesel CC with 3.92 runs 8.5/100kms. That pentastar is still impressive.
And you won't have the very expensive emissions problems with the Pentastar which that diesel will be prone to once it gets some higher mileage and age on it.
@@dieselmutt8865 Cheaper oil changes on the Pentastar too. It also doesn't need the fuel filter changed like the diesel.
My 2020 1500 hemi with etorque, on summer blend gas:
Tacoma to Cashmere and back, up and down mountains all the way at legal speed +5mph, 165 miles each way = 22 mpg for the round trip. If I hold it to 60-65, it will do 23-24.
This truck shines in mix city and Hwy driving. If you don't tow heavy loads often again this is the one.
My Ram etorque V6 says on paper 24 mpg but with the upgraded 3.55 gear ratio I'm actually getting at best 21.8 mpg highway. I guessed that with the upgraded gear ratio so I'm cool with it because I get more towing.
With my 2016 Pentastar crew cab 4x4 3.21 gears I average 24 mpg with a mix of highway/city driving. Pretty good for a retired police vehicle with 11,000 hours and 100,000 miles. The Pentastar is comparable to smaller V8s from a decade ago in both hp and torque. My Pentastar tows my travel trailer just as good as my 4.8 GMC Sierra did, but not as easily as my 5.4 Navigator.

The max distance I got out of one tank of gas with two gallons left in town was 501 miles. On the highway the best I got at an average speed of 65mph and 560 miles on a tank. Al of this on non ethanol gas which gives me easily 100 more miles per tank.

I have a 2023 Warlock with the NON e-torque V-6 and it has the 355 gears, i really doubt with with an 8 speed transmission having 321, 355 or 392 doesnt mean a thing, mine only revving about 1750 RPM at 70 mph. I get about 20 highway in reality using a calculator not the optimistic trip computer.
seems right. my pentastar does its best with cruise set to 65, after that it starts going down
Very helpful. Don't tow, don't drive off road and the most it will haul is furniture or garden supplies. Also live at a low elevation in California. The V6 Big Horn in 2WD should be fine. Problem is there are so few on dealer lots. I'll probably have to special order to get what I want (and wait 8 weeks).
Couldnt you just change between 4x4 and 4x2 ?
For the most time efficient mpg loop. Just travel a little farther then expected mileage distance. Then turn around and go back.
Note: 70 mph isn't where the best mpg is. If you go 55 mpg it will show max mpg.
Yeah on my pentastar engine, I noticed somewhere around 60-65mph is when I get the absolute best mpg, when I go faster I still get a decent mpg but still noticeable less at the few mph less lol so I'd rather just drive alittle slower
Wow this truck averages the same gas mileage as a 4 door tacoma. I would rather have the full size truck

i've had the pentastar in a 1500 for 5 years, i wont go back to a V8. especially now that they've included the mild hybrid system. if you arent pulling a camper, or a huge amount of towing, the V8 is just drinking gas for no reason.

Ram played games with sales volume numbers. They added the Classic and new version.
But GM played the same game with GMC and Silverado.
I have a 2013 Ram 1500 SLT 3.6L V-6 Pentastar with 2 wheel drive, 3.21 rear end. At 113 KPH (70MPH) I consistently get 9.0 to 9.2 litres/100 km. At secondary highway speeds of 90KPH(55MPH) I get down into the 7's. The truck is excellent in the snow (I do use 120 lbs of weight near the tail gate in winter). The 3.6 V-6 is the base engine and yet all I see at the dealerships is the Hemi 4x4. I use the truck primarily as a people mover with occasional light truck duties and enjoy the lower cost of purchase and operation.....not everyone's want, but I'm sure a lot of people would be more than satisfied with a 3.6 V-6 4x2 and happy to hang onto a lot of money.
Elevation and terrain will affect MPG
On the highway I get 21.5 at 77 mph on cruise control. Running average is a 19 in mixed driving. Using Rotella Gas Truck 5W-20 synthetic.
Thanks for posting. Not bad for a full size truck. I'm guessing real world mixed driving in the V8 is maybe 15mpg...?

If you're buying a 4 wheel drive truck, you aren't worried much about gas mileage.
Gas mileage is what 2 wheel drive trucks are all about.
What is that RAM's payload and towing capacity with that penta star engine?

The V6 states it has a high compression ratio. Should we be using premium grade? I can't get a firm answer on this anywhere
You should read the owners manual it's pretty specific. "This engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide optimum fuel economy and performance when using high quality unleaded regular gasoline having a posted octane number of 87 as specified by the (R+M)/2 method. The use of higher octane premium gasoline is not required, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines."

It does have the tow package. According to the build and price that doesn't force the 3.55 or 3.92 gears and the build sheet for this truck says it has 3.21s.
I don't know how many miles you got on that truck and after $27,000 I guess 22.3 miles to the gallon
Nice but my new 19 f150 5.0 4x4 3.73 rear end with just under 2500km on the 401 gets 11.2-12.8/100km at 115-120km/h. It’s about a litre difference which in my opinion is not enough. Great video though.
think what it would be with 3.31 gears at 108 km/hr.
Drove both v6 and hemi v8. Its hemi v8 hands down. I haul with my truck and I need the power of the v8. Seems like a whole lot of truck weight for a small v6. To each his own.
Well, considering the v6 puts out 305 hp, think about it, a 2013 Chevy silverado made 315 hp, was that full size truck too heavy for the 315 horse v8? No not really. What about the 4.7L 310 hp dodge v8 that was available in 13' ? Same basic body style/ weight and no issue there other than fuel economy, So why would the 305hp v6 w/ etorque be an issue in a similar weight full sized truck today? It's equivalent to a small v8 from 7 years ago.

I am thinkin that it is worth it buying a HEMI instead, even though I do not tow anything, but drive a lot long distances...thought the v6 would be MUCH MUCH better the the V8, but looks like it is very small difference. Any inputs and help me choosing the V6 or V8, I appreciate any comment and suggestions.

I've had both....the hemi was about a 19mpg average, and my new 2021 V6 etorque is between 21 and 22 average for a tank. My highway mpgs are 23-24....I consider that a pretty decent mpg boost....Passing at highway speeds is more brisk with the Hemi, but I don't feel vulnerable with the V6.
Hi, the rain is a big reason why your mpg is lower. On a 45 mile highway loop with my hybrid sedan, I get only 40 mpg on a rainy day, but 56 mpg on a clear day. Average the 2 and you fall close to the EPA estimate.
The pentastar is maxed out moving the ram, putting bigger tires or actually pulling or hauling anything and the mpg falls of drastically
why not just measure the gas you add with a calibrated jug?
With a solar powered HHO set it would easily halve that mpg.
Weird why people aren't playing more and demanding it as an optional add to the truck, pick ups are the perfect platforms for such.

These seem to get about the same economy in the real world as Ford's 2.7. The 2.7 has way more performance though and is far better suited for truck duty. The 3.6 does well in our minivan but these trucks are quite a bit heavier and expected to haul more weight. Ram really needs some new drivetrains.
Yeah but I dont like turbos. I hate the lag, and dont think they will last as long.
These trucks are getting lighter, and don't weigh much more than a minivan. My '16 crew cab 4x4 is around 4,700 lbs, only a few hundred lbs heavier than a Caravan. I'm averaging 24 mpg with a mix of city and highway driving.

One factor in his disappointing mileage could've been driving in the rain. The friction of tires pushing against water cause the engine to work a l8ttle harder causing more fuel usage.. He ought to run this experiment again in dry conditions. He could probably muster 1.5 - 2 more mpg's.
Is the etorque lowering the highway mpg?

@@5thGenRams The engine and the etorque motor are always connected through the belt. When the etorque isnt giving power, its acting as a drain on the engine
@@ConquerCollin True, but the eTorque motor generator unit replaces a traditional alternator and with this system during cruising speeds all the electronic needs of the vehicle can be fed from the 48 volt battery back thereby allowing the MGU to "freewheel" whereas a traditional alternator will always produce a parasitic drag on the engine.
@@5thGenRams There has to be something going on. I have seen several people claim highway mpg numbers in non-etorque trucks that seem to beat real-world etorque numbers. Have you guys been able to test out a non-etorque on the highway?
@@ConquerCollin We have tested a non eTorque Hemi Rebel and got 19.5 MPG highway which we did a video on that should be a few videos back. Next I'll have to try to get a Hemi eTorque truck to compare it to on the highway.
I had a 2016 Ram 1500 with the 3.6 in it and got 26.5 mpg with it so I am surprised with yours

For probably not even 2 mpg difference when you factor the Rebel's tires and such I would rather have the power of the Hemi.
Driving on wet road makes gas mileage gets worse at least 10%.

They need to drop this engine....Wheres the straight six turbo di and port we have been promised? I had a 3.9 dakota way back in the day got worse mileage than the 4.7.
Why would they drop it? It's been proven to be reliable and it gets good gas mileage while providing the amount of horsepower the early 2000's V8's put out. When equipped properly like having the 3.55 rear end it can tow up to 7,600 ibs.

I mean you're wrong about the EPA test and why they are different. The EPA test at 55mph and you did your loop at 70. Do it at 55 like the EPA does and you will beat their ratings. Now I'm not saying the EPA test are representative of real world, and I personally say the EPA test are wildly deceptive, but at least do some homework before spreading bad info. And the test account for air pressure by adding resistance to the dyno. Once you are driving over 60mph in any vehicle other than a exotic sports car, you are now losing fuel economy due to general air resistance.
Which is exactly why I said at the end of the test is why I wasn't surprised that we didn't get the EPA numbers and explained exactly how the EPA rates highway fuel economy directly from them and why it's not relative to real world. "The "highway" program, on the other hand, is created to emulate rural and interstate freeway driving with a warmed-up engine, making no stops (both of which ensure maximum fuel economy). The vehicle is driven for 10 miles over a period of 12.5 minutes with an average speed of 48 mph and a top speed of 60 mph. Both fuel economy tests are performed with the vehicle's air conditioning and other accessories turned off." What's with the kilometers? This is USA . my 2017 Ram 4x4 pentastar has been in 5x for check engine . cam sensor, cam phasers, sprocket. At least that's what they tell me, unless they just reset computer and liar .... Chrysler customer service has been no help on my behalf with the dealer. They offer no help. I lost time in work, VERY SCARY when the check engine light came on the highway you have to put hazards on and limp to side while others beeping at you ,, seems like your gas pedal gets disconnected when check engine light come on !!!-! You make your own decision on what to buy . I use a truck for work. I want good mpg,comfort, good hauling. Trucks are a scam today. GM and ford are outrageous price tag. Chevy burn oil and crap out with AFM system, Fords are a fortune ,, Ram ,,, well I just told you

@Stephen Pruitt 2017 pentastar v6, has camphaser issues, and the problem was under warranty. They couldn't fix it and let the lease run out so I couldn't do my buy out option when lease was done. I has to return it.
Certain years the Hemi has problems with oil lubrication Chrysler doesn't help their customers. They should have never been bailed out by the government.
