Ranked among the top 10 aquariums in the country, Oregon Coast Aquarium is a "must see" for friends & families on every visit to Newport, Oregon. The aquarium is also one of just three wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the Pacific Northwest, and the only one in Oregon authorized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA to provide specialized care to endangered marine life like sea turtles, marine mammals, and sea birds. OCA is also one of only 13 organizations in the U.S. authorized to accept rescued sea otters.
Oregon Coast Aquarium rescues and rehabilitates about 300 animals annually. With this charity event, we are going to help expand their capacity and enable them to have a vet and vet tech on site, rather than contracted from other places like Oregon State University. This will help both their rehab program and their resident animals! Oregon Coast Aquarium hopes to start construction on a new Marine Wildlife Rehabilitation Center soon!
Named world class by USA Today , Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to over 60,000 animals across nearly 400 species. Including rays, sharks, jellyfish, and marine mammals like seals, sea lions, and sea otters.
Because I work with sea otters, I spent most of my time behind the scenes with OCA’s marine mammalogy team. Their incredibly staff introduced me to their resident otters, Oswald, Schuster, and Earle. All three sea otters were rescued by Monterey Bay Aquarium and deemed non-releasable after determining they lacked the skills to survive in the wild.
Senior marine mammalogist Megan was an integral part of sea otter Earle’s rescue and rehabilitation so I spoke with her about the sea otter pup's rescue story. She told me that while Monterey Bay Aquarium has an amazing sea otter surrogacy program, they did not have a surrogate mom available at the time of Earle's rescue so they knew he needed a home and the Oregon Coast Aquarium was happy to welcome him.

I also spoke with the Assistant Curator of Marine Mammals about one of their more unique rescue stories that happened during a sea otter survey.

The charity was a wild success. This dedicated community raised over $25,000 to help build this new rescue center. While the live event is over, it isn't too late to help! You can still donate directly to the Oregon Coast Aquarium here: streamlabscharity.com/oregon-coast-aquarium

Besides Joey, Earle is one of the cutest sea otters for sure! And a 48 year old Harbor Seal! Amazing!
Earle! The cutest sea otter.
He was pretty darn cute!!
Earle's widdle squeaky meeps 😍😍😍😍
He has a great meep for sure.
Earle🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for all the live you give the wondrous walruses!
Schuster was like, heck this starfish!! What a cutie. I love the baby otts, but I also truly love the old brats ❤.
Also knowing there's a seal that's older than me is insane! She was a 70's baby like.... What on earth!
I loved when he threw that 😂. Also Skinny was so great!
Well done! That was a really great set of interviews! Thank you so much for sharing them.
Thanks for watching! More to come.
Oh my gosh--Earle is so adorable (not Joey adorable, but close!)
Earle is pretty cute 😍
Awesome job~👍
Thank you for sharing this video~🤗
Thank you!
Thanks KP. It is nice to see some of the other aquariums in the US.
Great video, KP !!!
Beautiful place!
Those sea otters are so enthralling!!!!
I follow a couple of pet Asian otters in Japan. Hana and Kotaro. So smart, adorable and incredibly spoiled!
But your rescue of Joey really turned me on to the sea otters. Like many, I was watching him constantly while he was on UA-cam with the gang. I miss those live streams. Like so many, I so love those otters that there isnt a day that goes by that I dont think of them and you all at Vanaqua.
I also pray that God takes care of them and everyone at Vanaqua and the other aquariums.
I am one of those mothers that worry about all the critters too !
Stay safe everyone and may God watch over all of the goodness in the world!
💖🌈☀️🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻☀️🌈💖
You all do an amazing job 😊 Cheers and all the best ❤
Thanks for watching!
Great video KP & Double! So glad to be able to learn more about such an awesome place!
Thanks! It was a really fun place to visit.
I'm so glad to see you got to visit this place and share it! Its easily the most beautiful aquarium I've ever visited. Its a little off the path but so worth the drive (which is ALSO beautiful). Cant wait for the fundraiser!!
Isn't it incredible?!?! I just loved it.
I love the Oregon Coast Aquarium! When I lived in Oregon I used to have a membership there.
It’s incredible!
LOVE THIS! So cool to see BTS of OCA!
Thanks friend!
We're so excited for this collab !!
Wow, looks like a great aquarium. Looking forward to the fundraiser!
I will see you there!
Had I known that I could possibly (even just maybe) get to work with sea mammals, and help raise them, my field of study would have been much different. Don't get me wrong, I love physics: the long calculations, the universe-spanning ideas, and teaching kids who assume they'll never understand math. (I love watching those light bulbs turn on.) But if I had the chance to work with sea otters, I'd hop into the next transit-time machine and be a marine biologist; and I would head immediately to Oregon!
But watching your videos is the next best thing. Thank you for sharing. All my love to Skinny. :)
Well you probably get paid much more than me if it’s any consolation 😂
Such a good cause
Love your videos !!!!!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you!
Thanks so much KP for this amazing special...loved it!! Sweet Earl sounded like Joey❤.
Where'd you get that teal sea
Otter sweatshirt you were wearing?
awesome video.
I just found your channel, I love your videos 😁I watch Alveus Sanctuary a lot, so i like your marine facts since Maya at Alveus is mainly bugs, birds, donkey cow and so on ❤ it’s nice to binge you both
That's crazy 48 year old seal whatttt
It blew my mind too!
7:25 where to get that pullover?
I found it on Etsy!
Do they have walruses there?
No unfortunately lol
They only house animals that are native to their coastline.
Which aquarium is the one you're working at these days, KP?
Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium
@@KPassionate Is that in Oregon, too, or in Washington State?
@@John_Weiss Tacoma, Washington!
KP!! Been Mia but what a video to come back to! Can’t wait for the fundraiser and thank you for sharing all of these beautiful rescue stories. Also am I the only one shipping these boys with your golden girls of Point Defiance? 😂🦦💗
I thought Georgia Aquarium is supposed to be the best facility, unless it's just the biggest.
Much success with your fundraising.
Georgia Aquarium is massive. I've never been but I've heard very good things. Oregon Coast Aquarium is smaller but absolutely incredible. The sea otter habitat is the best I've ever seen.
@@KPassionate thanks. I only went to the Coney island aquarium in nyc, mystic CT aquarium and Norwalk CT aquarium.
Much success with your fundraising.
Much success and health to all.
You ever done acid?
its much better that humans take care of the odd one here and there and we can get to experience them as well.
mother nature is brutal out there and to me it makes more sense to keep some alive for much longer than in the wild
we shouldnt take them ALL in of course but if you see a pup and you wait a while and no mother... then sure rescue it.
just make sure that there is no mother off hunting or something
Do they want an established live-stream? Asking for a fren
They have a live stream. Available on their website
I always become sad when I see an otter. I was watching animal shorts when UA-cam gave me a video where a trapper choked an otter to unconsciousness and skinned it while it was alive...it moved after the fact. The man was proud of himself, and I only saw positive comments there. I thought humanity was above this and learned to be humane. I was wrong. It was disturbing to see that choking animals is considered humane and using neck snares is allowed. I read about this, an animal, mostly canines can survive in a neck snare for half a day, constantly choking but not enough to die. How is this allowed and endorsed? I saw videos where veteran trappers literally took 7-10 years old children into the wilderness and choked animals to death in front of them. Maybe the problem is with me but I think that could traumatize a child. I think it's cruel and unnecessary, there are better ways to control predator population.
