Directed and produced by Mike Todd and Ian Bennett, Catch - The Hold Not Taken takes a look at the history of Lancashire Catch as Catch Can wrestling, a style of competition that has influenced many all over the world. It's the basis for the style of amateur wrestling that appears in the Olympics, it's influenced Japanese professional wrestling for decades, and is now influencing the growing mixed martial arts scene around the world.
Focusing on Billy Riley's infamous Snake Pit gym in Wigan, the film looks at the relationship between a sport that began in Lancashire's industrial heartland, which grew and mutated into the variety of sports entertainment that Vince McMahon promotes today.
There's some great insight and interviews in this film, from amateur great Roy Wood, to American Olympic gold medallist Dan Gable, Japanese legend Tatsumi Fujinami, and UFC star Dan "The Beast" Severn. - Спорт
I qualified for the 1974 NCAA finals in Ames. I was a 190lber at ECU. When I entered the wrestling room I noticed a large group of wrestlers down in one corner. I quickly learned Dan Gable was taking on all comers” I had to get my shot. I did, but didn’t last but a few seconds. I am privileged to even tell this “true story”!
A true champion and a great man. I met him several times and he's the real deal.

Dan Gable is the greatest wrestler and coach of the 20th century but Cael Sanderson is the greatest wrestler and coach of the 21st century.
21 century is a joke....Gable produced not only the most NCAA champs but also world champions, Olympic gold medalists and high level coaches...Cael gave up points in the Olympics..Gable not one point...John Smith got 2 Olympic Gold medals and 4 world championships ...Baumgartner got 2 Olympic Gold medals and 3 world championships.....long way to go for Cael to beat that

Given his fitness, how was such a good athlete able to dodge the draft and avoid Vietnam (the war which took most young men, including me)?
Gable was busy beating the commies on the mat. Re the war, he may have been exempt due to the brutal murder of his sister - not wanting to take both children away from the poor parents.
