Nicely put together review, but I'd like to add my two cents on something. Your stance on Twilight's actions and lashing out at her friends I feel does hold weight, but I'm sadly gonna have to disagree. I admit during my first viewing of the movie, yeah Twilight lashing out at Pinkie was a bit of a d**k move, but after watching it again with a more critical eye, I actually believe Twilight's actions (including her lashing out) were completely justified. Sure the bond the main 6 share is strong and a friendship like that can help the group conquer anything they face, but i think it's also possible for bonds to fall apart a little bit due to high stress and the circumstances of the situations they're in. With everything Twilight has gone through in this film (seeing the other princesses getting captured again and all the help they try seeking either betrays them or outright say NO), Twilight is really the only pony who can save her people. That's gotta be a lot of pressure put on her shoulders. Yeah she can always rely on her friends to help, but the rest of the mane 6 haven't done any actions this stupid that would hinder her trying to do so. Yeah there could have been better communication I can agree with you there, but from what we got, I was agreeing with Twilight all the way. Her concern for the greater good was so high it may have clouded her judgement sure, but it was still a genuine concern where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. In a sense, Twilight was saying "Guys, do you not see what we're dealing with? I am literally the only pony who can save the world and you guys keep f***ing everything up. STOP IT!"
Thank you that’s what my thoughts were exactly and I even stated this and Rocky harmony and i’s own review of the movie if that I was waiting for a long time for Norman for twilight to be under so much pressure that she would like shy like that
Tempest's back story is NOT the same as Starlights... why does everyone compare them. Tempest is not Starlight 2.0 for crying out loud. Look, Starlight could have at least tried to keep in touch with Sunburst. She could have made new friends. There was a whole slew of things she could have done. Tempest was injured. Her horn was broken and she got a scar. Her magic was and still is, unstable. Her friends got scared and ran away from her, shunning her. She was left alone, truly alone. At a young age that affected her. In her mind, because of her unstable magic and broken horn, she'll always be alone. Tempest and Starlight have nothing in common with each other. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THEY ARE THE SAME WHEN THEY ARE NOT!!! Sorry if I'm snapping at everyone but come on really? How can anyone see any similarities with the two.
To me tempest is similar to the sonic forces antagonist, infinite. I mean they have many similatiries: They have the scars on the same left eye. They have the same color scheme. Uses powerful crystals to attack and use their hand-to-hand combat skills (The phantom ruby for infinite, while the obsidian orbs for tempest). They both have tragic pasts. They use fake names. They are intimidating with their voices. They are popular characters enough that everyone wants them back and have fanarts on deavianart.
I love how when Tempest finally sings her villain song, her shadows have actual horns and she doesn't. It kinda shows how much has changed because her horn was taken away, and it also shows that the main reason that Tempest is doing this is because the Storm King said he would give her her horn back. I really love these little details
When was the last time we saw an animated film with a Villain song? I miss villain songs, but with how enamored Disney is with twist villains just as much as soulless remakes of their animated films we're not getting them anytime soon.
I'll be honest, that Hungry Hungry Hippos joke actually made me laugh. Probably cuz it was so dumb a joke it was impossible not to smile for me. Then again I am someone who absolutely adores puns so maybe I'm just an easily amused person.
I think they were just going for "Evil is hammy" in general. Storm King felt more like a mix between Discord and Tirek, especially since Meghan McCarthy was the one writing this (probably not the best choice).
I figured that they were trying make the Storm King a funny villain not to be taken seriously, but I never thought of Hades until now. I thought they were trying to make him more like Discord. And, I'll admit that I do like the Storm King to an extent, even some of his dialogue did make me laugh (the scene of him changing the time of day over and over is easily one of my favorite scenes in the movie. So hilarious, it left me in stitches), but funny villains have been done right before, and especially a character like Discord.
Except Hades made it work. The Storm King comes off as a cringey try hard teenager kind of villain. Maybe if he were written in a similar manner of either Scar or Jafar it would have fitted him. Even in HTTYD 2 Drago Bludvist was a memorable villain with while a generic motive, a dynamic personality. Hes ruthless, brutish, insane and no remorse for what he does but hes also intimidating with his shoulders, his graggly voice, his scars, his backstory.
Great, now I'm stuck with the mental image of The Storm King saying this to Tempest: "So Tempest, what's going on here? You case the joint, any valuables? Come on, thrill me, chill me".
Well unless you are gonna get a stalion that squints like a gunslinger, pony that has a specie indentity dilema and is apparently a succesor to some noble order, mare were-wolf, a pony so ugly that he has to have an id on him to prove that he IS indeed a pony, troll, golem, vampire pony, stalion fairy and a religious stalion that unfortunatly had too much long of the name given by the cult and had to call him Soapbox. Get all those and you should be fine.
+Ryan Ekis I feel like the guards are more of a fear tactic and propaganda than anything else. It's sends the message of, "Don't fuck with us because we have an army of expendable clones!"
I think an outburst like Twilight's can happen to the best of us, and anyone can have lapses. But yes, it's a bit shoehorned. Maybe they thought newcomers would get the drama. But there's a lot in this movie that leaves fans scratching their heads. I get the moment of despair, for instance, but she was wrong about there being no hope.
Agreed! As someone who has a lot of Twis pros and cons in personality. Not to mention its not the first time shes lashed out at them and in the shes way too terrified of getting hunted by the Storm King and Equestria getting destroyed to have total logic and a solid plan in her mind. So i think she had a valid point in that heated moment, even if she didnt say it right. She just wants her friends to be reliable and ditching her right after and letting her break down crying alone and then get caught by Tempest(even if they didnt realize it at the time) really doesnt prove true friendship qualities, but at least they made up for it when they came back to save her after. And Twilight never doubted their reliability ever again. I hope~ Still. Its a carbon copy of every 3rd act in a kids movie or rom com so its not totally my cup of tea, but at least I can relate. I just wish there was more creativity in kids films. At least I have Wes Anderson and Care Bears~
"It feels like a lot of stupidity has to go down in order for this movie to happen" Josh, so many tie-in movies are guilty of that. It's their cliche. As for Thespio and your stance on Twilight. Both hold weight. It was BS that she lashed out at her friends, but she also is the only one really focused on saving their home. The problem is, she never talked to them about it. Did her trust in her friends get so crippled that she wouldn't consult them? Taking into account almost every victory they achieved relied on trusting her friends? That reminds me so much of the season 3 premier when all she went on about was passing her test until she recognized that she couldn't handle it. Even every EQG relied on the Humane 6 and Sunset more than her alone. She really does fail at her job doesn't she?
Why do you think she went from my top three to my bottom three. Season 4 took a nose dive in this and now has crashed on her horn. Hope she's got a plan for those who really do need to be killed to make them stop.
The entire reason a lot of episodes fall short is because they try to cram too much stuff into twenty-two minutes. So what do they do when they have almost four times as much run-time to work with? They try to cram in four times as much stuff. (face palm)
Probably because they were focused too much on new characters and celebrities, like every big animated movie these days. There's nothing wrong with just one or two A-list celebrities, if they are *ACTUAL* voice actors. Adding in random celebrities will just date your movie at best, and drag it down if they're absolutely garbage at voice acting. There *ARE* celebrities that are good voice actors, like Mark Hamill and James Wood or Jack Nicholson. Heck, Danny DeVito is a good celebrity voice actor.
That was entirely different. That was a live action remake of a cartoon inspired by Japanese anime. That had failure written all over it no matter *WHO* wrote it. It was just unfortunate that Shyamalan ended up being the one who got picked.
This actually makes the last time travel realm to be more believable. In that 1 episode where starlight kept making new timelines the last 1 was just a desert waste land. It's possible that timeline was where the storm king won over all the monsters in a huge war because he froze them all and because there would only be 3 alicorns he would very easily get his staff at full power. So he probably defeated all the monsters and the original elements, turned the remaining creatures into slaves and forced them to leave so they would help him conquer the next region, leaving nothing to prove that there was once life in Equestria...it could also happen because of what doctor Whooves finds out when traveling 1000 years into the future WHICH I BEED TO BE CANNON
There's another factor in Twilight's outburst that a lot of people don't seem to notice. We, the audience, are aware of Capper's attempt to divert Tempest, but the Mane Six don't; all they knew was that he tried to sell them. Also, we, the audience, are aware that the pirates weren't going to give them up, but the Mane Six didn't know that. Imagine how different the movie would have felt for us if we didn't have those moments. Also, no final grade from you, Josh? That's a first.
Though there were far better ways to get this across to the audience without treating them like they don't know any better. It's best to show and not tell a lot of the time.
7:07 The difference being is that Demise had a backstory and he had such an incredible presence. Not to mention that when we do finally see him, HE'S SCARY AS F**K!!! Storm King... Sure he had presence but it was not in the same vein as King Sombra and he kept switching him back and forth between Jester and Ruler (archetypes).
"Gee I wonder if Hasbro has the guts to kill the main character of their most profitable "Franchise recent years" Well it's not like they did that in the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE! (Animated) Don't tempt them Josh!
Except they did, and the backlash was enormous. So enormous they ended up bringing back Optimus Prime because so many kids and parents wanted it. And since then, it's become a running gag in Transformers media for Optimus Prime to die, only to get brought back to life. The closest we've ever come to a permanent Optimus Prime death, was the end of Transformers Prime up through the first season of Transformers: Robots in Disguise. That is the longest Optimus has ever stayed dead.
They were even forced to change the script for G.I.Joe the Movie (Animated). Originally, Sgt. Duke was meant to be killed in battle with Serpentor. But instead of declearing him dead, we are told by a voice that he "fell into a coma". And just as the battle is over and the movie ends, we get a happy voice announcement that Duke will make a full recovery. Hasbro: "See kids? And you thought we were going to let another character you like die? He'll disappear in future seasons for unknown reasons, but he'll be perfectly fine ^^"
Ironically, it was the planned death of Sgt. Duke in the G. I. Joe movie that made Hasbro decide to kill off Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated movie, as both were in production around the same time. When the Transformers movie aired first and the backlash against Optimus' death occurred (along with the less than stellar box office performance), the G. I. Joe movie was rewritten and bumped straight to video.
I never watched the movie, but of all the new characters I really loved Tempest Shadow (I know she has another name, but the first one's a million times better). Question: why wasn't the movie about her? She steals every scene she's in, her theme song is amazing and her backstory showed how Twilight could've become by doing this quest (stealing, lying and survive, all for "the greater good" of Equestria)
That “better off without friends like you” line actually makes sense when you considering everything that’s ever happened in the continuity of the show and remember what happened in the movie up to that point alone When life pushes you too far you’re bound to have enough and will need to blow off steam often directing your attitude at the wrong people saying things you don’t even believe are true but you can’t stop your self from saying them because of all the pent up energy Plus twilight is a being of perfection I’m honestly surprised bullshit like that didn’t happen sooner
The Storm King is: The Galactus to the Silver Surfer of " _Fantastic Four 2_ " The Supreme Leader Snoke to Kylo Ren of _Star Wars: "The Last Straw"_ As in The Storm King is made to be a final obstacle villain that is supposed to do nothing throughout the films length and is overshadowed by their more powerful/influential/developed 2nd-in-Command character. There are good examples of this type of character that can be effective as a villain of any sort in any genre: The Monarch to Henchman 21 from _The Venture Bros._ Sauron to Saruman from _The Lord of The Rings Trilogy_ or Emperor Palpatine to Darth Vader in the _Star Wars Original Trilogy_ are good examples of this type of villain character. Also, there is a veritable reason why everything looks so "Real is Brown" this is because the Sun and Moon have been frozen in place for around three days because Celestia and Luna have been encased in Obsidian: leaving them unable to even do their jobs. Eternal Night may have been not that big of a deal in the Nightmare Moon Timeline, but I highly doubt that Eternal Day is just as decent.
Josh, Make your flashes of text last longer! When I'm double clicking to try and pause when the text is on screen and it takes a dozen tries, the text does not last long enough!
@enddorb its not exactly Josh but the editor (TheDCmatrix) ;) he does it to be a funny or a troll....or a combination of both. he loves this types of reactions from the viewers
Honestly, Twilight's blowup and subsequent separation is actually my absolute favorite thing in the movie. Even before it was announced, I felt a pony movie outright needed to help the Mane 6 go through a legit rift in their friendship, no mind control or anything. So to actually see it happen, and in a way that makes both sides look reasonable, was a very pleasant surprise to me. Really, when you get down to it, the entire movie is REALLY about Twilight Sparkle's friendships being put to the test, because the movie feels so much less disjointed when you look at it that way. I also liken the Storm King's role to the Emperor in the original Star Wars trilogy. They basically fill the exact same role, right down to both primarily using lightning and only appearing in a video call until the third act.
Because they have to make room for the funnies. Personally, I would have preferred him to be a Sea Leaf Dragon, that would have been more clever than a Puffer Fish.
Yeah, I agree with you on the opinion that the Storm King is one of the most underwhelming villains of the series, in all factors that matter: power, design, motivation/backstory and personality. He seems to me like someone tried to make a weird fusion between the imposing intimidation of Tirek and the funny and charismatic side of Discord, but he has none of what made those villains' traits be enjoyable, the power to back up that attitude. Like, anyone with Discord's powers could act like a troll if they wanted to. And Tirek's power to steal magic made him a threat of the utmost importance and danger, hell, they even released DISCORD on him of all people before anyone else. Then there is his motivation/backstory, he is a random king that came out of nowhere that has a bunch of troopers that follow him because who knows why and they wield really strong armaments and anti-magic equipment that nobody knows where they got. And he is coming to invade and conquer Equestria (sure, why not?... because he wants the princesses' magic (OK... that's nothing new but it's still good, I guess?)... all because he wants the power to make storms to go with his name as the Storm King. Yeah, that is fucking stupid U_U smh. And finally comes the matter of his design, which I don't even know WHAT is he supposed to be. He really doesn't have anything cool or badass going for him unlike all the other villains. Even Starlight despite looking like a normal unicorn at least still aced the rest of the other factors of motivation/backstory, power and personality. The Storm King doesn't do good in ANYTHING. He really played second fiddle to Tempest in this story, who should have been the only main villain, with the staff just being a plot device by itself with no stupid character sticking to it that was there just to appear twice in the whole movie and then get killed-but- not-really. But I guess that the writers needed a clearly greater evil that her to show than she could be good.
Which is why the crew shouldn't have had it take place between seasons 7 and 8. In fact, you can tell the movie was made with the intent of not taking place at any one point in particular. Any nods from season 5 on come down to cameos that were thrown in for fanservice and nothing else. In fact, I think the film works much better as a standalone story simply because it allows more leeway in forgetting certain elements.
1:35 That was set up for a joke, the filly says she's good under pressure and we see a zoom in to a window where Twilight looks peaceful and it zooms in even more to show her panicking
I was actually really skeptic when I heard this movie was coming out. But when I finally saw it, I found myself enjoying it. Tempest could have polished in her backstory and her song in the lyrics department. She was a badass and almost literally took no prisoners in every scene she was in. The Storm King...I was actually happy when he met his end. (I actually yelled finally! when that happened) He and Grubber (I personally think Grubber's lines and scenes could have deleted and it would not effect the story whatsoever) were the weakest link in the movie. Seriously; I think they could have brought back King Sombra and have Tempest be his second in command instead. Maybe have Sombra corrupt her or something similar to that. I really like the hippogriffs or the hippocampus and the visuals were amazing everywhere. We got some amazing character designs and scenes. Princess Skystar was adorable and I seriously want a plushie of her. Twilight...yeah Josh pretty much said exactly how i feel about her performance in this. Also GUARDS??? Where are ya'll??
Gonna be hated for this bit; Twilight Sparkle's actions, dialogue and poor pace made her EXTREMELY weak of a character in the movie. The beloved Princess of Friendship is still the nerdy and orderly princess aimed at saving her home kingdom enough to act grumpy, annoyed and careless in her actions. Said carelessness led to attempted robbery and created the biggest and most painful moment of the movie: When Twilight angrily lashes out at Pinkie by saying she'd be better off without friends like them. Not only was this stupidly painful, but it was the necessary tool for the whole "We're not friends anymore but then we get back together later" bit. And said apology was being shoved in a climax to be ignored for comedic effect. Now if perhaps both Twilight and Tempest were together during the end of the battle for apologies, that would not only be forgivable but an excellent moment for the movie. But no...more like the Princess of Pace-dumping.
9:36 Now we need to find a Rey equivalent. Edit: Twilight is Rey. Another Edit: We need the actual Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Phasma, and Hux to all be tossed into the pony world, and end up as a ridiculous mix of cat-humanoids, ponies, griffins, dragons, and hippogriffs.
"Maybe I would have been better off without friends like you" The line itself is cliche The fact that it's coming from Twilight at all is contrived as hell The fact that her horn lights up as she says it is just interesting enough to make me okay with its inclusion
5:20 ish, forget the guards, where the hell is Discord? You'd think a hostile takeover, magic disturbance of princesses being turned to stone, and his closest friends going missing might get his attention. Seriously how did he not notice that?
This really should have been set between seasons 4 and 5, it would have at least made a little more sense. The rest of the issues, are basically a combo of needing more run time to actually explore stuff, and Meghan's own issues with writing 'epic' stories, such as the reliance on plot holes and 'just because' character motivation to get the story where she wants it to go, and her hatred of any non-Twilight alicorn. But the songs? They were all amazing, not sure the issue. Though, as great as Rainbows was, it was really odd as an ending song. That's another big thing that, makes me not really want to watch the movie again, all the dark, dismal, hopelessness never really pays off in any big "FUCK YEAH!" exciting moments, and the ending song is, just a bit to somber and sad to end things on a high note.
Would make as much sense as EQG never having been mentioned till the season 7 finale. Either way it's going to be an issue. But at least setting the movie early closes more plot holes then setting it when it is causes. Because at no point did the movie or show explain where all of Equestria's other allies were, why a bunch of hippogriphs that neither Princess has apparently talked to in a looong time was a better choice for help then the freaking Dragons, what Starswirl and the other pillars were doing during this, what Starlight "Can fight Twilight Sparkle to a draw and that was before spending over a year being tutored by her" Glimmer was doing, why Discord wasn't around or at no point did even Fluttershy suggest maybe he could help, why Twilight was acting more like her Season 4 self and uncertain about her role, the nerfing her to hell would stll be an issue but that's different. Not saying it wouldn't cause issues, but it solves more then it causes.
eqg didn't need to be mentioned since most of the action takes place in the human world and Flash Sentry does make a cameo in Three's a Crowd. Since Starlight does appear in the background in the movie, It cant be any earlier than season six. P.S. I've seen some comments on other videos and I think you should make your own reviews to show all of us your opinion on some of the episodes and comics and how they could've done better.
I feel like Meghan has the habit of shafting Luna and Celestia badly as well. Like out of all the writers I mean. In fact I think she wrote Twilight's Kingdom too? That finale there is when Luna and Celestia badly got shafted.
Wait, who the heck said this was after Season 7?! That makers no sense! I had assumed this entire time that it was after Season 5 at the lastest, based on how long it would take to actually create this movie, and the fact that Starlight has no mention or line in this entire thing.
It started development after Season 4, and I think the story was written with that in mind. The only Post Season 4 stuff we got, was some last minute cameos. At some point, I think someone should've passed word along to the staff that "three more seasons are gonna be done before you get the movie out, might wanna look at them and do some rewrites to fit the timeline."
It's from the show director Jim Miller himself. It's because they probably didn't have to explain why the events of the movie were swept under the rug from season 5 to 7. twitter.com/TheBiggestJim/status/916109643570544640
As someone who's not a brony, I honestly found the villain to be the most relatable character from what I saw in this review. Being surrounded by cheesy, cutesy ponies who love to spout messages of friendship every two minutes would probably make me pretty damn sick of it too. So I guess this movie's saying that I would be a villain in the MLP universe?
Justin Riley her magic is also responsible for her flight. For the average Pegasus, it just happened to be concentrated in the wings, I think. So it applies to alicorns as well. Also being sent flying by a cyclone most likely means she would had been a smear on a wall.
Then she most likely can't regain control in the tornado before getting flung to a wall or the ground. And without her magic, she most likely wouldn't survive the impact at near-terminal velocity.
In my opinion, it's average. I love its animation and its music, and it's got plenty of best pony Pinkie Pie. The main reason I'm disappointed in it is because it's also a reminder of what FiM looks like to non-fans, and I was hoping that it would appeal to everyone. And after everything the show has given us, Perfect Pair, To Where and Back Again, Shadow Play, et cetera, I really felt like all the pieces were there, but the story writers, I feel, relied on brand recognition and didn't care nearly as much as they should have. So, I swear to God, if it turns out that Teen Titans Go cared more about the quality of its movie...
The only gripe I had about the MLP movie...and Gen 4 as a whole is Twilight's character. I KNOW she...kinda, sorta struggles with a sense of neurosis. But she must understand that no matter what, nothing is perfect. On top of that, perfection in itself is a lie. So, worrying about things going wrong because of one detail being out of place from your plan is rather immature. Something I've felt in the Lesson Zero episode. I mean, was it really necessary for Twi to yell at her friends the way she did
No. No not in the slightest. Just unnecessary drama fluff stuffed inside a nonsensical cash grab movie. This is why I just stick with Gens 1-3. It's my childhood and the movies and shows has better writing lol.
Makes me prefer screw up characters like mikey from teenage mutant ninja turtles (2012 series version especially) cos at least they try and aren't afraid to do it
Yeah Tempest is saying she can only rely on herself and shes evil, Twilight relied on herself to get the pearl and not her friends, and look where it got her: captured. The message is saying once again that its nice to have friends. It's a good message.
Should've used Trixie and Starlight as the exposition ponies at the start of the movie and the end of the movie was _ridiculously_ abrupt "Yeah, my name's Fizzlepop Berrytwist." *CREDITS* At least Tempest didn't get her horn back
... I listen to we got this all the time setting up breakfast at work. He's one misplaced jab at my Inuit Daughter from Lily Territory and it's not even been 3 minutes.
A friend and I pretty much came to the same conclusions you did. Though I disagree about the songs, I thought they were all pretty damn good. I really hated Grubber, he was absolutely the worst thing about the movie. And the Storm King was just annoying.
Anyone notice that these theatrical releases for shows, especially hasbro, follow similar plot structure. If you’ve ever seen G1 transformers animated movie and GI Joe, compare them to this film and they’re pretty similar it terms of set up, hero journey, and conclusion.
Basically once a movie studio gets involved they start playing it safe. The shows tend to have a bit more freedom. They're allowed to experiment, to mix things up and occasionally make mistakes. The movies... Not so much. They need to convince a bunch of people with no prior involvement in the franchise and no real interest beyond investment and return that the film is worth making and that formula is safe. It works. It's proved itself successful over and over again, so you want to convince someone that won't even remember your main character's name half an hour after your meeting that your script is worth investing in you play by the rules, because when it comes down to it Hollywood hates risks.
Oh yeah, I agree it's not a bad formula. Like I said it really does work and some AMAZING movies stick to it, but it can make things a little predictable when you spot it's in play.
fictionfan0 Interesting. I always thought broken horns meant you could never use magic again at all. Now the question is: how do you fix a horn exactly?
Here's my question: why does the staff need 4 alicorns? You know, considering three of the five are relatively new. Is the staff relatively new? Did it use some other power source once, and Tempest is just substituting the princesses in?
I guess it was calculated that magic from like 4 alicorns could fully power up the staff to cause trouble. Then again if Luna got shattered when Tempest recklessly stateu-ed her when she WAS STILL FUCKING FLYING, she would be in huge trouble since they would be one Alicorn short(not sure if they knew about Flurry Heart since they would have gone after her instead of going through the trouble of nabbing Twilight)
Good review, but I feel like everyone misses *ONE* key point with Twilight's decision. She didn't know her distraction would work and that Queen Novo would join in. She had no idea that any of that would happen. And let's say she did tell her friends she was going to steal the pearl. Do you think her friends would've said "Yes"? Someone would've raised an objection to the idea. I actually like that we have a kid's movie where the main hero does something wrong, *AND* is treated as in the wrong for doing it. How many movies can you think of off the top of your head where the main hero does something questionable and gets away with it, even though the bad guy does something on a similar scale? It's nice to have a hero that actually gets called out for being in the wrong in a movie. And it's a good case of "Making a bad decision with good intentions". The scene on the beach immediately afterward though, that is the undisputed low point of the movie. There's poor writing, and then there's just going with whatever first draft thought came to mind.
I'm more surprised that he didn't started screaming as to why didn't the Wonderbolts see the airship fleet coming from their altitude. Not to mention, he didn't seem to notice that the whole situation after the Rainboom would still have been salvageable if it wasn't for the Mane 6 LEAVING THE MAP WITH AN X ON MT ARIS BEHIND and getting their friends fried.
"The Demise to this movie's Ghirahim" That is actually a _fantastic_ comparison. Hugely charismatic villain who is supposed to be the Big Bad's minion steals the show from the Big Bad himself, who, though repeatedly brought up during the plot as being a major force of evil, ends up being kind of underwhelming in comparison. -at least Demise was intimidating without being goofy-
@@MegaDynamiteDan true, but there's kind of a reason for that. before it was revealed he's a few shards short of a mirror, Zant had spent _most of the plot_ being intimidating. Every time he came on screen before the twilight palace cutscene, he seemed like an almost Darth Vader-esque villain. Him loosing his marbles is jarring, but at no point is Zant's madness comedic. He is erratic and dangerous, like someone waving a loaded gun around. After that point, we know Zant is an omen of greater things to come, so he gets to drop the Darth Vader act. that was a bit disjointed but TLDR: Zant was _written to be intimidating._ The Storm King wasn't; he was written to be comedic. And that's kind of the issue, isn't it?
Fun fact: Queen Nova is Bismuth from Steven Universe Also, I think the reason why Tempest was so latched on Storm King was the empty promise he put forward for reviving her horn. I don't think she trusted him, she was wanting to do her part of the deal to get her horn back, then maybe betray Storm King herself. It's just a guess, don't quote me on that.
Three things 1)Tempest stood up to a fudging bear and she gets shunned for her coming back alive? Broken horn or not, what sense does that make, the kids would be kissing her hoofs for such boldness; they'd literally call her queen of the playground. Her friends are such cowards, no wonder she turned cold. 2) How can the ponies just ignore a town that looks broken down, industrial, smoggy, with a disgusting moat and everybody struggling? HOW can any pony worth their riches and abilities just ignore practically desolate areas while continuously celebrating whatever they want? 3) Why did it take them (the ponies, princesses, anybody) this long to try and stop the Storm King’s reign only when it started to affect them personally? Where were any of them when the Storm King’s armada took over the Hippocampi, the pirates, that city?Like if you ain't a pony, you're either a second class citizen or an underwater refugee. I mean, I wouldn’t worry about this so much if the movie wasn’t so full of its “Friendship Solves All” theme to drive home how this will be resolved when it could’ve been resolved LONG 👋AGO👋!
I still think that this was one of the better animated movies of 2017. When compared to movies like the Boss Baby and Ferdinand, this movie did a lot of things right that those movies failed at.
I think it deserves praise if for nothing else, being a 2D animated movie in a day and age where even Disney no longer believes in it. I imagine some people inevitably drew comparisons between Disney and this movie, because Disney had a monopoly for the longest time on 2D animated films.
And the only other major animated film of 2017 I can think of, was Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. An original and creative concept from Dreamworks, probably their best since How To Train Your Dragon.
3:10 Who's the evil succubus? (I mean I can guess the others, Eternal Darkness is Nightmare Moon, Saurondorf can either be Sombra or Crysalis, Caos Reigns is Discord duh, and the beast from hell is Tirek,)
16:53 Okay, your imitation of that one character from Star Wars Episode I is FLAWLESS, sir. It's just so gosh darn hilarious and funny and I really can't help but enjoy it so much.
9:11 that explains of why the Guards are out.Because they are afraid of these Storm trooper's aims that is worse than Derpy holding a Gun whilst wearing a blindfold.
Tempest is amazing. Wait, when have the princesses showcased incredible power? They’ve shown some impressive talents, but we’ve never seen them use impressive magic outside the cutie mark related stuff. Plus, they haven’t exactly displayed any particular fighting ability. Also, when was Twilight said to be stronger than Starswirl? Storm King is a shit Aku to me. Yeah, Grubber is awful. The movie was written back in season 4/5 iirc and they didn’t have a chance to make many changes down the line, and relics remain. Lack of Starlight, lack of Flurry, and so on. Poor Spike, getting the shaft again. Twilight’s blowup makes perfect sense to me. Twilight’s friends did screw them on multiple situations for not thinking before acting at all. Then, when they finally made it to the hippogriffs, the first ally Celestia thought of did not help them. Telling her friends the plan to steal the pearl would’ve been stupid because Pinkie or Dash or one them would’ve screwed it up if they knew based on their bone dead stupidity earlier in the movie. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pinkie or Applejack yelled out her plan as soon as they heard it. Her friends refused to acknowledge the situation and worse, their own mistakes, like when Pinkie drew the entire town to them or when Rainbow got their new allies immediately captured. I find myself completely siding with Twilight’s blow up. The Storm King’s forces were pathetic and we never see him do anything without the staff. The movie makes it seem like Tempest was basically the entire force and only remotely competent member. Seriously, they lost to a handful of ponies with no combat training, a handful a pirates, a cat, a baby dragon, and a very sheltered princess and lonely. Throw in 10 hippogriffs and they could’ve just strolled through Canterlot and won. Honestly, the movie was very mediocre for me. The only thing that stood out was Tempest.
23:48 Ah, but Tempest was serving the Storm King so rather than just having someone do something for her she had to work for it. I have for a long time seen I cannot expect my friends to do stuff for me or repay a debt, but my employer has always given me my paycheque.
THANK YOU, you're right about: Why are the "powerful" princesses so weak? Where are the guards? Tempest is filled with stupid! But i disagree with supporting this movie, it's a lame, lazily-written cash-grab. With terrible new characters (because buy toys), plot-holes and ignoring things the show's canon established. Also Tempest sucks. I mean it, i think she's the worst fictional character ever conceived. Her backstory is beyond dumb (She got her horn broken because she was stupid enough to enter the cave of a dangerous monster when she was just a child, and that somehow caused her to hate her own kind), she's the text-book definition of a Mary-sue (defeating the princesses in like 20 seconds, among other examples) and being so stupid she trust this guy who obviously will betray her in the end. Why do people like her, i can't understand it. Please, somebody explain it to me?
Joshua Gonzalez I still love the show. But this movie was just so horrifyingly bad. AJ and Fluttershy had nothing to do. Twilight lashing out at her friends was just so terrible and out of character, people actually defend Twilight for doing that. The other princesses were as useless as possible during this movie, Celestia just stood there like a moron, she did nothing to defend herself and her subjects. For "powerful" princesses, they sure are extremely weak and easy to defeat. Sia-pony was only in the movie so Hasbro could earn even more money from the movie and sell more merchandise. And Grubber is the most annoying, useless character in this entire abomination of a film. If the Emoji-movie didn't came out too in 2017, MLP The Movie would have been the worst animated movie of the year.
It's kinda weird how the Twilight lashing out against her Friends is so similar to Ash lashing out against Pikachu in I choose you. Seems to be a recurring trend for this kind of movies. And over the top edgy rival/antagonists. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY 24:52
I was not aware it was a trend to have the main character lash out at others in movies now a days. I kind of thought there was supposed to just be a scene where the heroes get captured and all seems hopeless,.
In Twilight's case I guess yeah what she said was really dickish, but she was mad, and under so much pressure which under similar circumstances anyone would blurt out hurtful things without thinking. It was a highly tense situation and from Twilight's perspective it looked like her friends weren't really taking the situation seriously.
Okay... kinda took me off guard when I heard the words FullMetal Alchemist in this review, because I had seen this movie when I was still rewatching it after years of not touching it and... I need to make a comment. (but first let me say that I have been looking forward to this video since the announcement of it came from the last review, and I was excited the moment I saw it pop up in my Subscriptions page, and I very much enjoyed it, thank you for reviewing this, I enjoyed the movie immensely and, if there are more movies of MLP like this one, branding off into this wonderful world of pastel colored ponies of Friendship, I will support it.) Alphonse in the clip that was shown had previously mentioned that he was beginning to think something was wrong with him and was basically put in a position where he was beginning to doubt, and was put in a ripe opportunity for someone to hit hard in a really sensitive topic for him. (you do make a good point how it is odd that Al took words from a serial killer over his own brother) ...but when you're a soul living in a suit of armor for years and years without any sense other than sight and hearing... I don't really blame him for having an existential crisis. And adding onto the outburst Twilight and her friends were going through (mainly Twilight) they WERE in a heated argument in what was already a tense situation where all of their friends, family, everyone they knew were being held by someone who had turned the Princesses into stone and was after Twilight... yeah, anger does lead one to yell out words that are hurtful or just making bad decisions just because they were blinded by anger. Which I understood from Twilights point of view... .....but I do get where Josh is coming from. But friends that strong can find themselves saying things they do not entirely mean, just out of anger. (also, while I'm on the topic of FMA and MLP, might I add that I found it interesting that I got into two boys searching to find a way to regain that which is lost while also watching a movie about a unicorn trying to get her horn back? Just thought I'd mention that..)
Well I once asked about why Starlight and some other "newer" characters aren't present and people did some research and apparently they started to create the movie after s4 so around the time when the plot was complete, starlight was just being added to the show and they'd have to rewrite a lot of the movie to include her. Same with flurry heart I think.
I still prefer the original 80s movie to this simply because I found it to be more entertaining and the songs were more memorable to me. Yeah this this movie for me was a major disappointment even though I did laugh at times. The plot was extremely painted by the numbers and Twilight's behavior involving the sea ponies really got on my nerves due to how contradictory it was. Here she was telling her friends not to trust strangers and yet she does the EXACT same thing as Capper. Also I've yet to see anyone talk about this, but what good would a Transformation pearl good do to save Equestria or the Princesses even? Yeah I haven't watched any reactions to this movie as a result to how underwhelm I felt at the end of it. It was pretty average and I expect more from Meghan McCarthy and Daniel Ingram had a bigger budget for the soundtrack and I was disappointed there too.
I just wish this wasn't so damn clichéd. Seriously, it's one of the most generic movies I've ever seen. The main villain was tragically underused too. He had the potential to maybe be the next hades if they gave him actually clever dialgue and screen time.
I'm Donald Drump and bling bling I'm the King yeah, I probably should mention that it isn't terrible, it just seems so bland and predictable, especially compared to the source material.
+339link Your comment pretty much sums up EVERY OTHER ANIMATED MOVIE IN THE 2010's. Mainstream and Western at least. I always feel disappointed whenever an animated movie has a REALLY formulaic plot, whether the movie is good, average, or bad. Especially when live-action movies, or animated movies from overseas, or independence, seem to be more innovative, or at least TRYING to be original.
If you think about it Twilight did have a reason to lash out at pinkie. She knows they are the only ones who can do it. but being away from equestria she has NO STINKING CLUE WHAT IS HAPPENING BACK THERE! She is trying to save her home and no one would help them.
The only piece I disagree with is you saying Twilight yelling at Pinkie Pie is bad. Personally, I loved that scene. For starters, when we get angry and frustrated, we often say things we don't mean. You can see the immediate regret in Twilight, after realizing what she said. It also is a good show that friends fight. But just because friends fight and say incredibly hurtful things, doesn't mean they have to stop being friends.
So Tempest would be Ghirahim and the Storm King would be Demise? If someone made fan-art of that, that would be AWESOME! I do love Ghirahim as a villain
Well, at least the Storm King apparently has good taste in sculpture. (If you are confused, there is an art center in NYS named "The Storm King Art Center")
Did anyone else felt like the Sky Pirates were basically filler, like the Main Six could have just snuck below the ship and did that air balloon thing without wasting any time, or is that just me?
The criticism of Tempest supposedly being "hypocritical" doesn't hold any weight, I'm afraid. You're forgetting that her philosophy of "trust no one but yourself" is only in the context of FRIENDSHIP. She is not so stupid as to only think she can restore her horn when she is fully aware that was out of her reach. Tempest does not explicitly say that she does not trust anybody, either. She simply sees no need for *friends*, an anti-thesis to Twilight's philosophy of friendship being important. Tempest did not see the Storm King as a "friend." He was a means to her end of restoring her horn. For example, you wouldn't flip off a mechanic who knows how to fix your car, unless you were so stupidly ignorant to think you can do so yourself, then you end up fucking the whole rig over. There is no hypocrisy, it is authorial intent. There isn't any explicit indication that Tempest has zero trust for anyone, otherwise she *wouldn't* be part of the Storm King's army in the first place, she is simply very, very cautious of trusting others thanks to her backstory. Just saying, but it's a criticism pulled from nothing.
Last observation I’ll make for now. I know that most animated movies don’t get extended cuts (although Forgotten Friendship will be getting one). However, while I’m not expecting Hasbro to be smart and give this movie an official extended version (for a company obsessed with money, they’re not that bright), it is possible to put one together. The same animation program used for the movie, was also used for The Moon Rises. Granted it doesn’t look as good, but it’s still pretty decent. So all we’d need, would be for deleted and/or extended scenes to show up in the DVD extras, and then a team of fans could reasonably create a fan made extended cut of the movie. Wether this would be the kind of extended cut that dramatically improves the theatrical cut of the film (as with The Two Towers for example) remains to be seen. The most I can do, is ask the showstaff at a Q&A, to please consider releasing a special edition blu-ray of the film, with lots of bonus content geared towards older viewers (and not just the standard games and sing along you find on kiddie DVDs).
"Why is it when Gruber does it, it's annoying, but when Pinkie does it, it's funny?"
Because it's Pinkie Pie, don't question it!
And because there's more to her than "lol random".
ShadowL Drago she got development and time for us to get use to her antics and being well written did help
Grubber did not and felt like Fi was skyward Sword
+angbandsbane
I know this is a big statement, but Pinkie is the Deadpool of MLP.
Because the fandom is full of hypocrits
STOP IT!"
I actually thought the exact same. But thankfully, I managed to think of Twilight's reasoning as I watched.
DaWillstanator/Thespio hi!!!!!!
Thank you that’s what my thoughts were exactly and I even stated this and Rocky harmony and i’s own review of the movie if that I was waiting for a long time for Norman for twilight to be under so much pressure that she would like shy like that
DaWillstanator/Thespio I'm 50/50 between you and Josh
DaWillstanator/Thespio the exact same thing happened to me
Tempest's back story is NOT the same as Starlights... why does everyone compare them.
+Dark Forge Well, that's the way media commentary and discussion works. Everybody is so OBSESSED with comparing and ranking things.
And here's another long comment
Dark Forge I didn’t think of Starlight at all when I heard Tempest’s backstory.
To me tempest is similar to the sonic forces antagonist, infinite. I mean they have many similatiries:
They have the scars on the same left eye.
They have the same color scheme.
Uses powerful crystals to attack and use their hand-to-hand combat skills
(The phantom ruby for infinite, while the obsidian orbs for tempest).
They both have tragic pasts.
They use fake names.
They are intimidating with their voices.
They are popular characters enough that everyone wants them back and have fanarts on deavianart.
someone need a snickers?
I didn’t realize the guards were missing. I was too busy shouting TELEPORT half the time
When you're too busy nitpicking to notice something else to nitpick about.
Mr. Pokirby exactly
i was yelling.. " DODGE, DODGE DAMN IT!" XD
Like TFS Piccolo.
Also, the Wonderbolts. They were in the song, vanished during the battle, and reappeared already in chains.
And Discord. He doesn't show up until the credits sequence!
I love how when Tempest finally sings her villain song, her shadows have actual horns and she doesn't. It kinda shows how much has changed because her horn was taken away, and it also shows that the main reason that Tempest is doing this is because the Storm King said he would give her her horn back. I really love these little details
Glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that in a positive light
When was the last time we saw an animated film with a Villain song? I miss villain songs, but with how enamored Disney is with twist villains just as much as soulless remakes of their animated films we're not getting them anytime soon.
Then we'll just keep pushing for them to come back, one way or another.
Moana had a pretty decent one with Shiny, but they kind of wasted it by not having Tamatoa be the real villain of the movie.
+TheSlayFer Ch. T.
"...Like fire! Hellfire! This fire in my skin! This burning.. desire.. is turning me.. to.. sin!"
@@truexenith8596 I so miss that.
@@happybunnyntx yeah but like you said Tamatoa wasn't the villain. At least on Moana the twist was the other way around.
No one ever points out Pinkie's hellish demon laugh when she's cupcaking the guard.

I got Cupcakes HD and Smile HD flashbacks.
Or how she laugh while falling to her death
It's Pinkie Pie, don't question it!
That's probably because they're either desensitized to it or, like me, trying to not have a cringe/terror reflex.
I'll be honest, that Hungry Hungry Hippos joke actually made me laugh. Probably cuz it was so dumb a joke it was impossible not to smile for me. Then again I am someone who absolutely adores puns so maybe I'm just an easily amused person.
keybladeoverlord I laughed to. No shame
I'm still hoping for a Hungry Hungry Hippos horror movie
Well, real life hippos are terrifying.
keybladeoverlord I completely missed it until Josh pointed it out... and I like the movie less for it.
I was crazy enough to believe that we were going to see some actual water horses there!
I get the feeling they wanted to get James Wood as the Storm King because he is trying WAY TOO HARD to be Hades.
I think they were just going for "Evil is hammy" in general. Storm King felt more like a mix between Discord and Tirek, especially since Meghan McCarthy was the one writing this (probably not the best choice).
Hey someone else who thought they were trying to go the hades angle with the Storm King.
Great, now I'm stuck with the mental image of The Storm King saying this to Tempest:
"So Tempest, what's going on here? You case the joint, any valuables? Come on, thrill me, chill me".
And yeah Emily Blunt was perfectly casted in this.
She managed to outact everyone else in the movie with every single line.
But the Mane 6 hold their own to her.
that and she was also Marry Poppins in Marry Poppins Returns
Awesome moment #1:
Where...
Are...
THE GUARDS?!
+Ryan Ekis
I feel like the guards are more of a fear tactic and propaganda than anything else. It's sends the message of, "Don't fuck with us because we have an army of expendable clones!"
Grubber: We killed them and ate the livers
100th like 👍👍👍
Honestly should be WHERE IS DISCORD
I think an outburst like Twilight's can happen to the best of us, and anyone can have lapses. But yes, it's a bit shoehorned. Maybe they thought newcomers would get the drama. But there's a lot in this movie that leaves fans scratching their heads. I get the moment of despair, for instance, but she was wrong about there being no hope.
+Connor Thompson
Yeah, it's utter bullshit when people say things like, "If you turn evil, you always had that in you." People change...
Congrats you are officially smart. People dont know thats what happens when people get angry
I hope~
Still. Its a carbon copy of every 3rd act in a kids movie or rom com so its not totally my cup of tea, but at least I can relate. I just wish there was more creativity in kids films. At least I have Wes Anderson and Care Bears~
Its kinda unfair how Twilight is the ONLY mane six member who is never given ANY benefit of the doubt when she fucks up.
"It feels like a lot of stupidity has to go down in order for this movie to happen"
Josh, so many tie-in movies are guilty of that.
They still handled it better than when Shyamalan tried to cram the first twenty episodes of Avatar into a 2 hour movie.
That... Makes so much sense.

"Gee I wonder if Hasbro has the guts to kill the main character of their most profitable "Franchise recent years"
Well it's not like they did that in the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE! (Animated)
Don't tempt them Josh!
about 2 or 3 decades ago and never did it again.
Gungelion yeah good point 😅
Hm, kind of like Roman Torchwick (RWBY). Except Tempest doesn't have a Neo. She _is_ the Neo.
Miles Hk yeah as soon as I saw Tempest beat the princesses I immediately loved her character 😍
The greater good
Why the eff do people like Tempest?
Miles Hk Tempest was a horrible villains and her backstory was rushed. Ps Moondancer is a better example.
That “better off without friends like you” line actually makes sense when you considering everything that’s ever happened in the continuity of the show and remember what happened in the movie up to that point alone
When life pushes you too far you’re bound to have enough and will need to blow off steam often directing your attitude at the wrong people saying things you don’t even believe are true but you can’t stop your self from saying them because of all the pent up energy

The Storm King is:
The Galactus to the Silver Surfer of " _Fantastic Four 2_ "
The Supreme Leader Snoke to Kylo Ren of _Star Wars: "The Last Straw"_
As in The Storm King is made to be a final obstacle villain that is supposed to do nothing throughout the films length and is overshadowed by their more powerful/influential/developed 2nd-in-Command character.
There are good examples of this type of character that can be effective as a villain of any sort in any genre:
The Monarch to Henchman 21 from _The Venture Bros._
Sauron to Saruman from _The Lord of The Rings Trilogy_
or Emperor Palpatine to Darth Vader in the _Star Wars Original Trilogy_ are good examples of this type of villain character.
I think the pillars followed Starswirl's example and explored the new land of equestria to see what truly has changed, including their own homes.

Huh, that does put it in perspective.
15:47 I don’t know why, but the *_BRIAN BLESSED_* bit left me in stitches! XD
same
Why didn't they make Spike a sea dragon sea horse or a animal at the deep part of the ocean?
And he's still somehow better than Sombra

Don't forget the Hanz Zimmer BWOM
In case u didn’t know, the movie was in production after season 4 so that’s why there isn’t continuity from season 5 and 6
Which is why the crew shouldn't have had it take place between seasons 7 and 8.
Toon4Thought I’d like to say it’s after season 4. Maybe could’ve been the finale. I mean I like most of what Megan McCarthys involve in.
Considering Starlight has a brief cameo at the beginning of the movie, I would like to think that this film takes place in between Season 5 and 6.
Toon4Thought: most of non-brony UA-cam reviewers agree that the movie as it is doesn't work very well as a standalone story.
1:35 That was set up for a joke, the filly says she's good under pressure and we see a zoom in to a window where Twilight looks peaceful and it zooms in even more to show her panicking
16:49 for the best part of the video.

Gonna be hated for this bit;
Twilight Sparkle's actions, dialogue and poor pace made her EXTREMELY weak of a character in the movie.
Damn, I couldn't have said it better myself
No.
Have to disagree sadly.
That’s why I don’t like Disney sequels. There are exceptions. But the “we hate each other” bits are used a lot.
skellington15 No everyone else was at their worst and sucked. Twilight had every right to act how she did.
Grubber is like Charmy Bee. They get annoying when you see them for too long.
No Josh. The Storm King doesn't work for Hasbro.
He IS Hasbro
Oh my god. I don't how I didn't notice
This movie could have very easily titled, "My Little Pony: Where IS Everyone?"
"Maybe I would have been better off without friends like you"
The line itself is cliche
The fact that it's coming from Twilight at all is contrived as hell
The fact that her horn lights up as she says it is just interesting enough to make me okay with its inclusion
But if it didn't take place between seasons 7 and 8, the events of the movie not being mentioned before season 7 would've made no sense.
@@sethmoss8671 Maybe right after The Season 5 Finale and a bit before the Season 6 Premiere.
I feel like Meghan has the habit of shafting Luna and Celestia badly as well.
Like out of all the writers I mean.
In fact I think she wrote Twilight's Kingdom too? That finale there is when Luna and Celestia badly got shafted.
You forgot to mention the part during the end credits where they used the Storm King's head as a piñata.
8:05 tell me I'm not the only one that thought of Kat from courage the cowardly dog.
+DenyingEnigma95
I was thinking of Puss in Boots.
The one thing I don’t understand is why they thought Twilight died when she has WINGS?!
No magic = no flight
pigifi How does that work? Why does she need magic to fly?
Justin Riley her magic is also responsible for her flight. For the average Pegasus, it just happened to be concentrated in the wings, I think. So it applies to alicorns as well. Also being sent flying by a cyclone most likely means she would had been a smear on a wall.
pigifi Pegasus don't use magic to fly, it's like moving an arm or a leg. Same thing with Twilight.
Then she most likely can't regain control in the tornado before getting flung to a wall or the ground. And without her magic, she most likely wouldn't survive the impact at near-terminal velocity.
I liked that Spike didn't leave Twilight after she fucks up.
0/10 No joke about Bismuth concerning Novo being voiced by Uzo Aduba.
I don't think he's ever seen SU
That's none of my BISMUTH (If u get this I love you)
He played a clip of Pearl in his review of Spike At Your Service. He is, at the very least, aware of the show.
Should've used Trixie and Starlight as the exposition ponies at the start of the movie and the end of the movie was _ridiculously_ abrupt
"Yeah, my name's Fizzlepop Berrytwist."

It works. It's proved itself successful over and over again, so you want to convince someone that won't even remember your main character's name half an hour after your meeting that your script is worth investing in you play by the rules, because when it comes down to it Hollywood hates risks.
wendyheatherwood well it’s not a bad formula, I really love the G1 transformers movie but it’s just a interesting observation
Oh yeah, I agree it's not a bad formula. Like I said it really does work and some AMAZING movies stick to it, but it can make things a little predictable when you spot it's in play.
15:08 It's Pinkie Pie don't question it
So, even if a unicorn's horn is broken, can it still be used to cast spells and preform magic?
More like her magic is limited to sparks of barely controlled magical energy.
fictionfan0 Interesting. I always thought broken horns meant you could never use magic again at all. Now the question is: how do you fix a horn exactly?
I think a powerful healing spell would repair the damage.
Convince Discord.
Then again if Luna got shattered when Tempest recklessly stateu-ed her when she WAS STILL FUCKING FLYING, she would be in huge trouble since they would be one Alicorn short(not sure if they knew about Flurry Heart since they would have gone after her instead of going through the trouble of nabbing Twilight)
seeing The My Little Pony movie was my birthday president because it came out the day before my birthday True Story
The whole thing with the storm king is a reference to an official Dnd story. Pretty cool if you ask me
I'm more surprised that he didn't started screaming as to why didn't the Wonderbolts see the airship fleet coming from their altitude. Not to mention, he didn't seem to notice that the whole situation after the Rainboom would still have been salvageable if it wasn't for the Mane 6 LEAVING THE MAP WITH AN X ON MT ARIS BEHIND and getting their friends fried.
They weren't expecting Twilight to have them escape the way she did, so it's reasonable that they left the map behind by accident.
true, but you would think they would have thought of bringing it with them when they had to hide and then escape.
"The Demise to this movie's Ghirahim"
That is actually a _fantastic_ comparison. Hugely charismatic villain who is supposed to be the Big Bad's minion steals the show from the Big Bad himself, who, though repeatedly brought up during the plot as being a major force of evil, ends up being kind of underwhelming in comparison.
-at least Demise was intimidating without being goofy-
Even Zant is more intimidating than that circus clown
@@PrincessOfTheEnd Yes and even a power rangers villain is more memorable than the stiff krap
@@PrincessOfTheEnd Hell even Ghirahim started as comedic then became more terrifying and ruthless in the end during his final fight
@@MegaDynamiteDan ...you consider Ghirahim *funny?*
Fun fact: Queen Nova is Bismuth from Steven Universe
Also, I think the reason why Tempest was so latched on Storm King was the empty promise he put forward for reviving her horn. I don't think she trusted him, she was wanting to do her part of the deal to get her horn back, then maybe betray Storm King herself. It's just a guess, don't quote me on that.
Three things
1)Tempest stood up to a fudging bear and she gets shunned for her coming back alive?
Because the Equestrians are hypocrites.
True. I mean let's face it Disney owned the competition for animated films in 2017. Coco nailed it.
And the only other major animated film of 2017 I can think of, was Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. An original and creative concept from Dreamworks, probably their best since How To Train Your Dragon.
@@JCBro-yg8vd Aren't you forgetting the Breadwinner and The Big Bad Fox?
3:10 Who's the evil succubus? (I mean I can guess the others, Eternal Darkness is Nightmare Moon, Saurondorf can either be Sombra or Crysalis, Caos Reigns is Discord duh, and the beast from hell is Tirek,)
Chrysalis is the succubus because love sucker.
The Storm King and Liev Schrieber to an extant were wasted in this movie.
I'm sorry to read your opinion.
At least Spider Man: Into the Spiderverse did him justice.

I Agreed This Cash-Grabing Movie Sucks, Because It Makes Cars 2 looks Good 🥉
Joshua Gonzalez I still love the show.
(but first let me say that I have been looking forward to this video since the announcement of it came from the last review, and I was excited the moment I saw it pop up in my Subscriptions page, and I very much enjoyed it, thank you for reviewing this, I enjoyed the movie immensely and, if there are more movies of MLP like this one, branding off into this wonderful world of pastel colored ponies of Friendship, I will support it.)
Alphonse in the clip that was shown had previously mentioned that he was beginning to think something was wrong with him and was basically put in a position where he was beginning to doubt, and was put in a ripe opportunity for someone to hit hard in a really sensitive topic for him.
Hey Josh who's your favorite character in the movie my favorites are capper and tempest
Well I once asked about why Starlight and some other "newer" characters aren't present and people did some research and apparently they started to create the movie after s4 so around the time when the plot was complete, starlight was just being added to the show and they'd have to rewrite a lot of the movie to include her. Same with flurry heart I think.
I think they tried a bit too hard to have The Storm King be like Hades from Disney's "Hercules". At least that's the vibe I'm getting.

The movie is good, but the show was better.
I'm Donald Drump and bling bling I'm the King yeah, I probably should mention that it isn't terrible, it just seems so bland and predictable, especially compared to the source material.
329link Agreed, This Movie Sucks
+339link Your comment pretty much sums up EVERY OTHER ANIMATED MOVIE IN THE 2010's. Mainstream and Western at least. I always feel disappointed whenever an animated movie has a REALLY formulaic plot, whether the movie is good, average, or bad. Especially when live-action movies, or animated movies from overseas, or independence, seem to be more innovative, or at least TRYING to be original.
There were so many times in this movie I was just thinking “twilight, why don’t you just levitate them over a cliff”
Awesome review Josh :) however, I noticed you didn't give this movie a grade
Agreed... but i'm guessing he didn't have time for it in editing.
MasterMX745 Actually from his tumblr, he doesn’t feel that he should. Look for it because I did asked that question.
If you think about it Twilight did have a reason to lash out at pinkie. She knows they are the only ones who can do it. but being away from equestria she has NO STINKING CLUE WHAT IS HAPPENING BACK THERE! She is trying to save her home and no one would help them.
To Josh thank you for the great birthday gift
Happy Birthday.
You never said what your finale rate/grade was what would you rate it?

Yeah, I was kinda put off by this musical choice too. It just doesn’t match MLP.
BTW, I first heard this song in Jimmy Neutron!
There was an opportunity to make a Luis joke from Antman but it was missed.
That is what they should have done with Grubber!
19:16 number 1 saddest anime betrayal.
24:52 number 1 saddest anime death.
25:21 Aaaaaaaaaand the true hero...
Did anyone else felt like the Sky Pirates were basically filler, like the Main Six could have just snuck below the ship and did that air balloon thing without wasting any time, or is that just me?
Why didn't tempest get her horn back?!
