      We don't need to put everything in categories. In the words of the great Henk Poort: Good music is good music. Period.

    • @Hy-jg8ow
      @Hy-jg8ow 3 роки тому

      @@meekema3353 And what makes a music good (btw that's a category too)? Your personal preference? If yes, then every music is good, because it matches someone's preference. And if every music is "good", then "good" loses all meaning whatsoever. My opinion is, that calling people who have more specific tastes as being narrow minded and people who "like everything if its good", aka people who have no specific taste open minded is not saying too much. Especially considering, that this attitude would dissolve all subcultures, which I claim would be/is a bad thing, because without "fanatic" subcultures music like metal would have not survived more than a half century, it would have died like a fad, like disco and original punk did. Nowadays its fashionable to say you like everything, and its meant to mean that you have a wide taste and a tolerant personality, but for me it only means someone has not yet developed a specific taste, aka tasteless.

    • @meekema3353
      @meekema3353 3 роки тому

      @@Hy-jg8ow To quantify quality is a never ending discussion. To me well written, well performed, with real emotion rings a bell, but that does not have to be your answer. What I mean to say is that do not let the limits of a scene or a genre limit your discovery of music. A decade ago I would have said certain genres, like for instance metal, were not for me. But I have been surprised by quality in so many types of music that I find it rewarding to go and discover new performers and new types of music. Of course we al have our preferences, that's fine.

    • @Hy-jg8ow
      @Hy-jg8ow 3 роки тому +1

      @@meekema3353 Yeah, I can accept your reasoning to a certain degree. I also enjoy some music which is rather outside my favored genres, but I do have favored genres, thus a taste I gravitate towards, return to more.
      My main beef with a piece of music is, when its obviously crafted with a mind for it to sell, and not with a mind for it to express. This can mean that a music uses all or most of the elements and ingredients which makes them decidedly radio-friendly and has a "trendy" sound and instrumentation which echoes the most popular and best selling musical products. Such as when a rapper makes mumble-rap because that's what "contemporary" must sound like or such as when an electronic music maker makes slow ("intellectual") "trap" with tortured cat or mumbling children sounds in the background, because that's how everyone else does it. This applies to metal as well, lets say a band doing metalcore, because that's the newest "cool" genre in the center of the universe (USA).
      Commercial music in general I would classify as bad, authentic music I would classify as good. The problem is: there are always enough people for whom the most overproduced, most trendy, most derivative product will count as "deep and authentic".
      That is why I think that when judging the quality of music certain genres are objectively better than others, regardless whether they happen to connect with me or not. The criteria being musicality, technicality and originality. In terms of the first two criteria certain forms of jazz and classical music will turn out the best, with certain forms of metal and rock music following close second. In terms of originality the genres are widely variable, but personally I don't like something just for it being original if it lacks qualities in the first two quality category. My personal preference also rewards points based on qualities like: instrumental virtuosity, vocal performance, production (recording) quality, timbre, power of sound, overall composition and finally emotional value and conveyed meaning.

    Hey Chase, great reaction. I have never listened to Pvris before and this song was great. I think I may have to check them out. I have a couple suggestions if you want to react to some softer music and bands that don't have many reactions to them.
    Chvrches - They are a synth-pop band from Glasgow, Scotland and my favorite non rock/metal band. Lead singer Lauren Maybury's voice is incredible. I would suggest "Strong Hand", "The Mother We Share", "Recover", or "Playing Dead".
    Metric - They are an alternative/alt. rock band from Canada. I would suggest "Gold Guns Girls", "Gimme Sympathy", "Twilight Galaxy", or "Live it Out". You could also do a video looking at their song "Black Sheep", from the Scott Pilgrim Official Soundtrack, and compare it to the version by Clash at Demonhead, which is used in the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (The lead singer is played by Brie Larson in the movie).
    New Politics - They are an alternative/alt. rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark. I would suggest "Overcome", "Goodbye Copenhagen", "Dignity", or "Love Is a Drug".
    OneRepublic - They are a pop/pop-rock band from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Their music often mixes electric/acoustic guitar, drums, and bass with the cello, viola, or piano. I would suggest "Tyrant", "Oh My My", "Light it Up", or "Waking Up".
    Paramore - This is my last suggestion. If you haven't heard it already I think you would really enjoy reacting to any song from their immaculate 2017 alternative/pop-rock album "After Laughter". Top songs I would suggest would be "Rose-Colored Boy", "Fake Happy", "Caught In the Middle", or "Grudges".
