- Every now and then I repost reels that really show my personality or taste in travel destinations. This reel I did a long while ago and since then a lot of new travelers started watching, so this one is for all of you!
Why do I think Paris, Barcelona, Venice, Amsterdam, and Brussels are overrated?
First of all: all of these cities share a couple positive things. They’re beautiful, they all have tremendous history, and it’s definitely possible to have a great time in them (so don’t let this video stop you from visiting them in your life).
However I don’t like traveling to them.
Some of these cities are, in my opinion (!), worse than others. In Barcelona and Venice I had a relatively decent time, but that was just because I decided to explore those cities early in the morning.
I don’t like big cities when:
1. They’re overcrowded
2. They’re Expensive
3. They’re filled with pickpockets and scammers
4. They’re filled with tourist traps
5. The streets are full of trash
6. Everywhere smells like urine
7. They have a homeless problem
The places that I’m telling you to go instead have none of these problems and are perfectly safe to visit (also for beginner solo travelers).
They’re just as beautiful (if not more) than the overrated places, but you won’t get robbed or scammed and you won’t have to avoid stepping on drug needles when walking the streets.
Because they’re all the same country they’re not MUCH cheaper, but you’ll usually get better quality for your money because they don’t have nearly enough tourist traps in these places.

not only the tourist but the expense is also calculated I imagine, living in Amsterdam I know how expensive stuff gets cant imagine living here without a kitchen and there arent many air bnb's I imagine as our mayor is against that so thats more a vacation for students that can life cheap on sh*t or for the more richer tourist which I dont get that you would spend a lot of money to stay in Amsterdam or other places just for the buildings is for me a little crazy. Always travel for the nature and good weather lol

Mass tourism do ruins the experience. So yes, overrated. There's so many other things to see in those countries, other than souvenir shops and instagram places everyone already went to.
Maybe impressive but expensive and saturated with tourists. There are still many impressive cities in Europe that aren't honeytraps.

You like when everything seems fake like an Arab city (like the way you make your houses) but our capital has some millennials of story and it’s both the biggest and most beautiful open air museum both a city, where real people live (not only the rich ones). Then it’s also difficult to deal with old buildings, streets ecc… I’ll repeat myself:
Rome and Venice are unique because you will never find such big, historical and wonderful cities like that, if your experience of Caravaggio is going to be ruined by some dirt on the floor probably you had better to go to Disney world. Rome is for romans, you guys are guests

Bruges is much more touristic than Brussels. Authentic alternatives are rather Gent or Antwerp.
True, both of these are excellent destinations (I slightly prefer Ghent over Antwerp), but Bruges is definitely still worth visiting regardless. In fact, if you're going to visit anything in Belgium; it should be Bruges.
Ghent is a major university city and can also be really busy depending on the time of year.
The region around Bruges is also quite pretty (e.g. Damme, Lissewege; and into the Netherlands where you've got Sluis).
Not far to the southwest of Bruges lies the WW1 front line. Poperinge is known for the Talbot House (not much else to do, though); Ypres was a wealthy city during the Middle Ages that saw some of the heaviest fighting during WW1 - both of them are quite popular among British tourists. For these trips you'd need a car or so to get around easily.
There are also lesser known cities like Mechelen and Leuven (another major university city; also far more busy than Bruges throughout the academic year).
And of course, the many, many castles.
@@ewoudalliet1734 busier than Brugge? Depends what you mean with busy, if you mean there are people living there, sure. But I prefer a city where people actually live and work over a city with more chocolate shops than grocery shops, no matter how much I like chocolate.
And Brussels is grittier, but partly because of that, much more interesting than the open air museum that is Brugge IMO.

By "more busy" I mostly refer to students. Leuven is packed on weekdays at noon and sunday nights, but it also almost turns into a ghost town on fridays after 19 o'clock. That's because of the students that reside there and go home for the weekends.
During the weekends, you get quite a few people from the surrounding region that go shopping (but generally it's not as busy).
As for the chocolate shops vs grocery shops; there's a major difference between the city centre and residential areas surrounding the centre (Bruges is the 3rd largets city in Flanders, with 120.000 people living there). That difference is indeed really pronounced in the case of Bruges, but can also be seen in Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and even Brussels too.

Barcelona has nothing tbh. It's beautiful to walk around the center, but the monuments are not really impressive imo, the history isn't that good either, and they are really expensive. There are many more beautiful cities in Spain like Granada. Barcelona and Madrid are just really overrated

I was in Barcelona a month ago. One of the most beautiful cities I've seen in my life. It all depends if you visit a city fully or if you just walk for the Ramblas....

My mom came back from Paris two days ago , it was like her eleventh time and she still found it amazing. I never went to Paris on my own but if my mom says it’s still wonderful even though she’s probably the first one to complain about dirty places and mean people. I can think that Paris is a good to go if you go there with the right mentality and precautions.
I only was once in Paris. It was february, I was much younger and so broke that I couldn’t afford a metro ticket. So I walked around the city and I promised myself that one day I would come back in spring. For some reason I thought the city must be beautiful in spring. If you like architecture and big sandstone houses Paris is the place to go.
Paris is my top world city, looks stunning, world class museums, food is amazing (even the cheapest is good if you go where the locals go) and to top all that it smells like a sewer, it's rammed full of tramps and everyone openly hates you. What's more to want?

as an alternative for Amsterdam I would recommend Utrecht, Delft, Leiden or Harlem instead of The Hague

Spring and Fall are imo the best times to visit northern Italy; fall especially with all the leaves.
None of these cities are overrated. You’re talking about major centers of culture, urban life, and architecture that are some of the finest ever produced by mankind.

They kind of are compared to the smaller cities. The reason why they'r popular is sometimes more due to their historial or political significance thzn the actual quality. Take Brussels as an example. It's one of the dirtiest, crowdest, ugliest, poorest cities in Belgium. Bruges is way cozier, picturesque, verry beautifull, has good public transit and nice accomendations.
Brussels is not overrated, because it isn't known as a very touristic spot. If there is one city that is overrated in Belgium, it's Bruges (yes, it's beautiful, but not worth the hype). Instead chose Ghent.
It's overrated among foreigners and underrated among Belgians, since every single Belgian (excluding walloons) hates it.
I honestly find Ghent kinda underwhelming. 😬 Yes, the Graslei/Korenlei and surrounding area is nice, but you have basically seen that in a couple of hours.

Venice cannot replaced with any city
I’ve been to Venice. It’s my opinion, of course: it was good but it smelled a lot, the idea of everything being on water was more peculiar and uncomfortable than interesting and enjoyable. You have to go, but it’s not “irreplaceable.” I found Rome and Florence to both be fantastic touristic cities in Italy.

I'd say, instead of Amsterdam, go to Utrecht, Amersfoort, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Leiden, Delft, Dordrecht, Groningen, Nijmegen, or Maastricht if you like that old Dutch architecture kind of esthetics. Or go to Rotterdam if you're more into modern architecture.
The cities are not overrated they are all beautiful but its the quality as a whole that counts not only the beauty of a city. Cities like Hamburg, Dresden ,Salzburg, vienna and Budapest are beautiful too (my favorites) but less expensive, more friendly, relaxed, less crowded and safer 🙂

Because of medias promoting it. Paris Syndrome, look it up. Only Americans love the country. The rest get sad when they see there are no Frenchmen and it is all a rot.
And a lot of those tourists that visited Paris are going home underwhelmed. Paris has a handful of nice spots, but most of it is dirty, poorly maintained, stuffed with traffic, and let's not even get started on the Parisians themselves.
In that sense, I much more enjoyed Lille and Lyon. Their city centers are prettier as a whole, cleaner, and the people were friendlier.

I’ve visited most of the cities he mentioned in this video. There is a reason why Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam and Venice are top destinations. The alternative cities he offered are nice but they cannot hold a candle to these main ones.

It seems to be the latest trend to label some of the world's most beautiful cities as overrated. Some of the "alternatives" are just as beautiful, albeit often completely different. But that doesn't make the big cities overrated or less attractive. Especially Venice is unique

Go to all and make your own mind, IMO. All cities have pros and cons and it always depends on what you enjoy and are looking for (Paris has more museums than Nice, for instance).
People who says Paris is overrated just don't like big cities. Paris is a cultural gold mine, with so many things to see and appreciate. I've been a parisien for 5 years and I discover new things every weekend. Don't get me wrong, I like Nice but it's really dumb to compare it with Paris.

As a Barcelonian I agree, Granada is gorgeous and my city is really overcrowded. If you come stay away from the Ramblas and Barceloneta beach.

I've been to most on the list: The secret is to safely 'get lost' out of the touristy areas, and you find amazing things in the suburbs. BTW Great content 🎉❤
People here are overlooking the fact that there are several factors that are unique to each individual’s likes in travel. For instance, for someone coming from an undeveloped part of the world would find a city like Paris stunning while a person from let’s say Copenhagen or Singapore would find it dirty and overcrowded. Another factor would be expectation. Some of these cities are so hyped by the media that when you finally spend a lot of money to see them they may not always live upto the hype. Then there is the personal preference and taste. If you love history and culture, these European cities would be perfect but if you are looking for modern cities, then some Asian or American cities would be the best. So arguing about which are good and which are bad is futile as it’s different for different people.
As a dutchie who lives near The Hague, it’s ugly there don’t go.

I just don’t agree with the Paris argument, although Nice is a lovely place. The fact that Paris is so fundamental to France and sets the tone for the way of life for many French should make for it not to be disregarded solely due to it being a huge city.
It is also packed with so many spectacular and amazing sights, benefitting from the perks of being a big city!
Barcelona and Amsterdam are flawless. I would love to visit the others, tho.

I'm from the north of Portugal (Porto) and I think Barcelona is a very beautiful city...maybe I'll visit Barcelona again this summer...
By the way, I will never forget the "Sagrada Familia"...it's quite an amazing experience!
Aside from maybe Paris, these cities are not overrated and are still beautiful. If you want breathing room in your holiday don't go during peak season, you'll be swarmed by other tourists regardless whether you go to the biggest or second biggest city in the respective countries

I haven’t been to Venice but I’ve been to Trieste. And from what I’ve heard, Venice is barely a city anymore. It’s huge outdoor museum, basically. Trieste had a nice vibe to it. Perhaps not as many canals, but its location by the sea and the one canal you can see in the video do draw comparisons to Venice.
And, as a Dutchman, I can say I do prefer Den Haag over Amsterdam. Partially because Den Haag is not as big, but I also really like the skyline and it’s the Dutch political center so the Binnenhof and such are really interesting to visit.

I live in Italy and honestly I think Trieste is much prettier than Venice. Venice is absolutely worth visiting, it's a beautiful city with a great story behind but I fell in love for Trieste. They are both wonderful cities but if you make me choose between Trieste and Venice, I would choose Trieste.
I recommend you switch Venice for Frosinone, Barcelona with Vigo and Paris with Calais.

As a person who visited Nice (in 2017) I totally recommend you to visit there. Interestingly I’ve visited an ancient Roman ruins, very fascinating site.
As someone who lived in Venice for a while, January is the only time to visit because its quiet and reasonably priced plus the weather is usually alright

"overrated" is a word for History-challenged instagram-travelers looking for instant gratification.
I don’t agree on Venice. It’s true that Venice is overcrowded and extremely overrated but Trieste is just boring basic Italian city. It’s beautiful but it’s not better then Turin, Rome, Genova, Naples or Palermo. Venice is still much more authentic then most Italian cities. And then Trieste is quite expensive in comparison with literally any city of south Italy and actually then a lot of cities in the Nord.
Napoli and Palermo are Really underrated , fabulous city .

@@gu3350 Yes, Genova remind Naples: narrow streets leading uphill, a lot of greenery, vivd. In one word beautiful but if you’ve been to Naples it probably won’t surprise you much but it’s still worth visit if you will ever be in northern Italy. In my opinion is much more unique then Turin, Milan or Florence.

If you want to see nice cities, yes. If you are in competition with your neighbors, you have been in Paris or Amsterdam, you loose if you say you haven't been there.
People want to see places they know from TV.
I live in Venice and I know this wonderful city. It may be more beautiful if there weren't so many tourists, but due to the enormous touristic arrivals this city has become one of the baddest city to live.

Granada is beautiful. Tapas are free, you just need to pay your drinks Which are not expensive. If you want to go to the beach or to the mountain is not far from the city center. And there you can find La Alhambra, one ofbthe most beautiful Muslim palaces. At night there are flamenco shows in the caves and people are amazing ❤️

Disagree, you should visit Balkans (ex. Yugoslavia, meaning Bosnia Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro), everything else is overpopulated overtouristed horsecrap, especially Italy i think is overrated...... like ANYTHING they do Balkans does better, yes, even food, even "pizza" (which they didnt invent, but we did) and coffee....
Ive been to serbia and Slovenia and those jave to be the 2 most boring and uneventful countries ive ever been to. Croatia on thw other hand is beautiful

I’m Spanish and I completely disagree with Barcelona. It’s absolutely gorgeous and definitely has to be visited. Also Granada and Barcelona are completely different cities, so you shouldn’t go to one INSTEAD of the other. If the comparison had been Sevilla and Granada it would have made a bit more sense but Barcelona is not a fair comparison

@@Jokkkkke in terms of what? You go walk from HS to scheveningen and you walk through districts alien to the rest of the country. Housing more homes with a value of 1m€+ than rotterdam and utrecht combined. Utrecht has a few canals and stuff but their downtown is still only half the size of The Hague centrum.
