The Mercedes Benz SL from 1971 until 1989 is my all time classic of the decade.
Different wheels and tires please
black tires with chrome rims would look better I think, or all black wheels, maybe use original equipment wheels (large rims with thin tires don't look right on this syle car) painted all black to match roof; would also be nice if windshield was clear as the color of the windscreen only works with original color on the body
For this type of vehicle, I would have liked a much more classic wheel. Makes me think of a TV show ‘’Pimp my rides '' ...🤣
Beautiful blue! The wheel swap was a good choice. If you have an extra collet that came with your rotary tool, use it with the small bits in your drill chuck. One thing to use instead of the foot long hot dog jar is a pot from a coffee maker.
The wheels look a bit goofy to me.
Don't care for the wheels, but the paint is nice.
Another great video and restore too. Love the gift package opening with all the cars. Take Care and Stay Safe
Yes, those wheels aren't doing it for me either.
Dude, you've outdone yourself on this one. It turned out great. That front end looks amazing. The wheels work but...yeah...
This was one of my favorite Matchbox when I was a boy. Mine was a dark metalic orange color. I love the blue color and the wheels look fine. You did a great job.
Paint is great, wheels make it look like a modern custom
The paint came ou amazing, but those wheels don't match the car at all, looks like a teenager got daddy's car and put some 18" ugly sporty aftermarket wheels, that's a classic and deserves classic wheels! Love your work, keep it up!
Wheels are ok. The color is gorgeous.
An EXCELLENT looking custom Mercedes!!.. All ready to cruise the Autobahn!!.. Keep up the great work Bud!!
A solid casting with good bones.. And no missing parts!!
Awesome job my friend
Rob cut off the top of a plastic Milk bottle, they make a great funnel, I sometimes use it as a makeshift funnel when making Jam. The result with the Mercedes is brilliant.
The DARE car is probably a limited edition diecast. The DARE program is a program offered in our public schools in the US to help kids stay off drugs, stay sober and promote non-violence. Nice diecasts in this unboxing!
My neighbour growing up had an SL that exact dark blue colour, was a super nice guy. His had the hard top too.
Great detailing on the lights and paint!
Beautiful job !!! Fantastic paint, the wheels add a bit of RACE to the MB.
Very nice one Rob. I have to say that i'm not a big fan of the wheels. But the paintwork and details are super. Thx Rob!
(The caustic soda pebbles are called micropearls.)
Great job! Love that blue hue for the car.
Nice job on the small fine details too..
Nice restoration Rob, not to stuck on the wheels being different sizes.
Nice colour and chroming.👍
Classy ,different 👍👍❤️ caustic granules I think is the term for the stuff ! Love the kids in the background added dimension to household.👍❤️❤️❤️😎
I'll be anxious to see you work your magic on these!
Nice custom. Got a mint Mercedes and box - it’s really cool. Another great job Rob. Nice unboxing too.
this came out fantastic perfect color for it but i cant imagen how much dirt came out of it job well done
Rob I love the unboxings. Was watching this one with a Dodge Crane sat in front of me that I re-painted a few years ago. Imagine it's surprises when the last item out of the newspaper with a Dodge Crane. Mine was jealous because yours had the hook which mine doesn't... just yet
Car looks great, wheels are a no go. Thanks for sharing!
55 CHEVY D.A.R.E. IS A SPECIAL . LOOK UP D.A.R.E. ILLINOIS.
That's a gorgeous color.
Renault 5 😍😍 I like those cars which opened all the doors
Great color mate !
Wheels are a 'brave' choice. It has a street presence, but to classic for those wheels. Everything else looks excellent.
I love everything but the wheels. I think a medium size set of silver wheels would look really nice!
Nice job, you’ve out done yourself.
Paint and detail work is amazing, feels very true to the original
as for the the wheels... i think if you used the same wheels you did on the 1967 camaro color shift or the Original wheels (with a touch up) from the RX8 it would look fantastic.
Great job with the paint - different wheels, please.
Lovely color, the chrome on that grill really looks nice with the blue.
I can't tell if I like the wheels or not either, I wouldn't out them on the real thing, yet they look kinda cool.
Always nice to have a unique restoration now and then though!
Hi Rob,nice model, nice paint colour and looks awesome with the details done.the wheels need to be swapped over for the same size.
I love the color of it.
That's definitely a different look to it. I think I like the wheels more than I dislike them. But the rest of the car is gorgeous as always
14:09 I had the same Dodge as I was a kid. Now I have got one example from my pal!
awesome work Rob 👏🏻
Wow Rob, it seems a though you and I are the only ones in the free world that like the wheels. The car would not look out of place in California, a bit flashy for some, but I like it. To each his own I reckon, another fine job my friend !
It turned out really nice 👍👍😊
I had a Bburago 1/43 SL 300 R129 with the same blue color as this (or slightly lighter blue). It's great.
Nice! Rob, you can use your Tac Life to drill with the smallest bit.
Very nice detail as always, I think I would have went with green
Yeah ! Matchbox Monday 👍👍👍
Looks like a new hot wheels you for sale today with those wheels. Great paint job
I'm not sure about the wheels, maybe just the colour of them, but the rest is great, really nice colour and detailing...
You definitely improved that Mercedes, that's no doubt. And in that unboxing video, I had a Matchbox Dodge Challenger exactly like that one. It was one of my favorite cars...I played with it often. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
Always enjoy your videos
I absolutely love the color. I might have to get mine painted like that. I have a 79 450SL. But I hate those wheels. They do not look well on this car. So since I own one I can give you some pointers.
All SLs are convertables. If they look like they have a hard top it is removable. So if you are missing the top you can make a "top down" version. There are supposed to be black rub strips on the front and rear bumpers. Finally, the amber lenses on the back are not that big. looking from the side the front half of the lens is red, and the corner is amber.
put a dark red accent on the raised body lines (on the sides) to make the redline rims part of the car's theme
The paint looks great! That color reminds me of the former car of mine I miss the most, my '97 Saab 900S convertible, except a bit lighter.
The wheels... hm. I think if they were all the size of the front ones, you blacked out that red chrome, and you could get the stance a bit lower, the _shape_ of the wheels would work fine. As they are, though... eh. Not my thing.
Info tidbits: D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education, if I recall correctly) was a program that police departments did in American high schools back in the '80s and '90s (may still today, but I haven't been in a high school since 1991, so I dunno). Basically, the PD's designated D.A.R.E. officer would come around and talk to classes about how Drugs Are Bad, Mmmkay? One of the things a lot of departments did to jazz up the program a bit was have a special D.A.R.E. car painted up in a deco similar to the one on that toy (usually a flashy sports car they took away from some drug dealer or another, NOT a 1955 Chevrolet :). My hometown's D.A.R.E. car circa 1990 was an '83 Camaro, because even the drug dealers are low-rent around here.
As you might imagine, the D.A.R.E. program was not notable for being taken seriously by its target audience. The common wisdom around my high school when I was a student there was that the initials stood for "Drugs Are Really Excellent". :)
(Also: I think the word you were after was "granules". :)
Good restoration rob i have that excact model mint and boxed i remember that particular model from when i was a child in this day and age you wouldent have tiny plastic parts like that plastic roof they are always missing and could easily be swallowed by a child personally id have kept the original wheels love your channel rob look forward to the next one
Nice shiny paint job!
I could see the Javelin being done in a dark British Racing Green
Very nice finding the right wheels for this casting had to have been tough but if any one could have done it looks like it'd be you loved the vid
I suggest keeping the hot dog jar method. It adds charm to your channel. D.A.R.E. is a drug resistance program that was started in 1986 for the benefit of grade school students.
The funnels work great if you have a smaller hole. It will allow the caustic soda to pour in much slower. :-)
Love the car, sorry the wheels don’t do it for me either.
I had one of these in my childhood.. Unfortunately it is long gone...
Would like to see that larger scale AMX done up, Like the colour on the Merc.
The paint job is great. I think it's the red trim on the wheels, if it was silver, it would look better.
love it mate and as for the colour perfect
I still have this car in pristine condition from the 70s among others.
I think that Mercedes turned out great!! It's funny that before you started, I thought that car would look good in some kind if blue paint!! I realize you didn't have much of a choice for the wheels, but you do with what you have! It's beautiful!! Your detailing always adds so much to the look!! 👍👍👍👍
I hope you do that Javelin soon and do it with your chameleon paint!! Just a thought!!
I think you should go with the original wheels.
The wheels were a choice of very few options i suppose. Would be so much better if you changed the red color into the same color of the casting. The car looks awesome with this uncommon blue color.
The Dare program is used by police departments in America to teach kids about drug abuse and violence. You did a great job on the 350SLamd I love the color
Beautiful Mercedes :)
Wheels look good. I would have done all 4 the larger ones but it almost look like a hot rod this way.
A great job. I'm also starting with this work, it's really great
Cheers paint well done!
I hate the wheels but I love the car. I like that Renault as well. Cheers mate!
Great looking
A another vote against the wheels, mate. Rest of the car looks brilliant, mate. Well done. Maybe you'll find the perfect set sometime.
Great resto, especially for one that appears to have spent its former life as a rally car. To go against the popular opinion I'm actually digging the wheels.
I had one of those Orange Ford Transit Trucks too...
Pretty color, i think the original wheels would be better if cleaned up
great job
Lovely restoration/ custom as always. Fantastic. The Wheels are terrible 🤣🤣🤣.they have nothing to do with the rest of the car. I love your channel. Keep on keeping on
Those wheels may or may not work for that casting, I don't know. I do like it though. But more importantly I do have a MBX casting that those FTE wheels will work for, and this video inspired me to so a wheel swap. Thanks. I love your channel and I find it to be a great source of inspiration
Nicly done Rob
Very nice Rob. I'm not real sure about the red on the wheels.I think if that was a chrome or maybe match the color of the car might look okay. Great video. Stay safe and healthy.
I have a few of these coming in the mail this week . Good video. Too bad we aren't neighbors lol. I have lots to be restored hint hint .
I would have done a rubber wheel but once again amazing job
the paint looks awesome, the wheels... I'm sure you already have replacements ready. :) but now that you mention it, the soft top is usually missing indeed. and the windscreen, too. maybe it comes off too easy for prying childfren fingers. :)
nice unboxification. ^^ the renault 5 reminded me of a recent article in a classic car magazine I read, about love in times of prude paragraphs, when the young ones took off in their cars to be undisturbed while making love not war. apparently Renault tried to bit off a piece of the "adult toy vans" cake, and together with french body workers Heuliez they made 200 units of the Renault 5 LeCar Van, with rear side windows closed except for bullseye windows, rear lid window closed and the spare wheel fastened outside, and luscious red plush interior. and now I'm pondering on which model could serve best for such a build. XD you can google it, seems like many rejuvenated the idea later. :)
Nice job👍🏼👍🏼
you made my buddys car he restored , same colours his is a V8 nice build
It might help if, for 1970's Matchbox, you gave the paint a going over with a scouring sheet (Scotchbrite), to rough it up, and help the caustic soda get at it.
If you had used some closed back Five Spoke HW wheels, then it would have been perfect. Even better would have been some Matchbox 'Three Studs' or their 'Domed Hubcaps', both styles looking great with anything - they are both in current use. Otherwise, the Mercedes looks superb. Nice one.
The D.A.R.E. '55 Bel Air was part of a series marketed in the US, of a Government scheme to make kids aware of the dangers of drugs.
Liking the Dodge crane - a transitional model, as the front wheels are held on with a red nylon clip, as the 'Superfast' axle is way too skinny to fit in the original position - but it has wide tyres, not the skinny ones, like mine has.
Nice aftermarket wheels..
rely love that color almost blueish grey (then again im a bit color blind) But honestly I would love to see both you and Danny take a car repaint it but leave it with a mat finish I kinda like some of the colors you guys used before as mat color and think the shine kind makes it to shiny.
I love the color and the roof came out great. As for the wheels, I don't hate them, but they look a bit strange to me on this model car. Overall, another great job!
Brilliant!
