    Great job. I recently took up restoring Hot Wheels and Matchbox die casts and am really enjoying it. Between Marty's Matchbox Makeovers, baremetalhw, and Diecast Resurrection, there is a lot of good information out there that makes this hobby very enjoyable. Looking forward to your next video.

      Thank you so much for the comment. I really wasn't sure how it would be received. I was also concerned about the length, but this car had a lot of challenges I couldn't just gloss over. Any other feedback would be appreciated. Incidentally, Clear coat is curing on my next build - Mercedes convertible!

    Pauly, that looks awesome! I have been building mostly 1/25 scale plastic kits off and on for over 55 years. About 25 years ago I started customizing my son's Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars. Now that I see more guys doing it on UA-cam, and the repro parts available, I'm going to get back into it. You did a great job in all the areas of this restoration. I hope to see more!

      pauly7218,,, My pleasure,,, I went in 1980 to the Rolls factory in Willesden for an interview to work for them and failed,,also we would in the 70s see the Rolls Phantom chassis being driven down from Crewe on the main roads with no shell,,the drivers wore long brown coats and fighter goggles with pilot gloves,even back then it looked dated,,,not far from there was the Vanden Plas factory in Kingsbury where the various Vanden Plas were put together another Matchbox/Lesney car the MG 1100 was made there as a Vanden Plastic version,,,,,,will look at more of your great vid's,,, Cheers,

    I have been stockn up on materials to do restorations/ customs myself. In not there yet but hopefully soon. I still need a compresser, i have one pucked out. Airlines and a bit/ fitting for my new badger airbrush to increase the thread size . Also paints a pin vise, a center punch & dental picks. Oh yeah all the necessary stuff to zink plating. Its surprising all of the little things needed to do restorations. Great tip using plyers instead of grinding the axle!

    • @pauly7218

    Great work on restore, very basic info on restoring, which is awesome for newbies, mentioning axle has a smaller end, would have been nice, pledge floor wax does a nice job on windows as well, painting self tapping screw like marty, would have been a nice touch, using a self tapping screw on tab on front grill was an option. I really enjoyed watching this video, and would like to watch more of your restore videos of hotwheels and matchbox

    • @pauly7218
      @pauly7218  5 років тому

      Thanks for watching and the great great comments! I actually use pledge for a lot of stuff in model building and yes, it works great on clear parts. I'll be sure to do it that way and discuss in next filming (I already have a couple builds in the can).

    That was a beautiful restoration. Really love the sparkly effect that was created with the silver undercoat. Thank you. Just sharing something I saw someone else do on another channel, I apologize that I don't remember the name, they used a putty like JB Weld and shaped it into a small ball. Then they placed it over the post after the base was put on and using the end of a paintbrush, they pressed into the center of the putty ball creating a faux rivet. You can still tell it's putty and not a real original rivet but it looked clean and neat. Just sharing that info. Again, thank you and a beautiful restoration. Oh, and thank you for mentioning about not having to tap the post. I had wondered about that.

    God you brought back a memory of my childhood I had this car as a kid in the same color this was a car that my older brother destroyed as he did with so many of my toys his form entertainment was to destroy my toys and make me cry and just to let you know remembering my old toys is always a good memory it's like seeing an old friend.

  • @tootall5559
    @tootall5559 5 років тому +4

    what you did with the paint job is basically what us old timers would call a Candy paint job, if on an actual car. What you use for a base coat determines the brightness and look of the paint job. If you ever want to do a really trick paint job, start at the front with white, add black as you spray the car in blended stripes as you go down the car, ending with solid black at the end or base, depending on which way you go down the car. Then coat with the transparent color. If you started at the back with white and ended with black at the front with the base, you would have a paint job that makes it look like it's going fast when it's standing still. You can also do other neat tricks, but they get very difficult on such small models. You could also go with a silver or white base then take a very fine brush with gray or black, and make designs in the paint, then put the transparent color over that. The result is a design that at first glance isn't there, then when you get the right angle on it, it pops out.

    • @pauly7218
      @pauly7218  5 років тому

      Very cool. I wonder how that would translate to a small scale? Thanks for watching...

  • @s.sestric9929
    @s.sestric9929 5 років тому +2

    Great job of matching the color. I have a theory that you could replicate the rivet head with JB Weld; put a round little ball of it over the post and hole, then use a pointed tool to press it down after has started to set, but before it hardens fully.

    • @pauly7218
      @pauly7218  5 років тому

    I got one of these when I was six years old at Santa's Village in upstate New York back in 1972. I also received the car transporter. I had so many Matchbox, Hot Wheels and other brands. The cars were so much more interesting back then, toys and real cars. My favorite was the light green '67 Cougar which I received for my sixth birthday. It made such an impression on me that my first real car was a '67 Cougar XR7. I wish I had both the Matchbox and the real Cougar now.

    Quite a good match color wise to the original with a metal flake look! 😍 Surprised you go to the expense of using epoxy and clear caulk. I like using Formula 560 canopy glue
    which dries clear and strong and those parts could be removed if need be later!

    As an old guy who was collecting Matchbox cars before there even was Hot Wheels, I can tell that Matchbox had suspension several years before Hot Wheels came out. Even some of the King Size had suspension. Matchbox also came out with AutoSteer on a number of there cars but abandoned it when they went to Superfast to compete with Hot Wheels.

    OH by the way, Marty and others do use the pliers method of removing the wheels from time to time. Some axles don't have a major mushroom head on one end, and you can do the pliers bit on that end. Other times they mushroomed them well, and the pliers bit doesn't work all that well. Not that you need to, but you can put the wheels back on by simply squeezing very hard with the pliers to make it larger then the hole in the wheel. Some other makers used this method from the factory. Matchbox did not.

    • @pauly7218
      @pauly7218  5 років тому

      I didn't know that but it doesn't surprise me. Those guys are so sharp. It isn't 100%, but for short axles I like not removing material. Thanks.

    • @UberLummox
      @UberLummox 5 років тому

      Ya can't flip'm 'cause they have locating tabs on one side. They only go in one way.
      What I do is heat up the center with a candle and give it a nice reverse bend.
      It gives it a real nice new car bounce, stronger than original!

    Lighting is excellent. Voice narration is clear and helpful, but the "okay" near the end was abrupt.
    Try to frame the action for the viewer, since what you see is not what we are seeing. Example: we did not see the insertion of the grille into the front of the car. Why did you decide to paint the trunk closed, since it was the only moving part other than the wheels?

    Since you were a firefighter, which I respect because you helped to save lives, and wound up ill for your efforts, I did not thumb down this. The paint was orange peel texture, and much of the paintwork was of the back of your shoulder. To drill through the post to the point where it popped into the trunk is unacceptable. Also, once you took it apart, it ceased to be a restoration and became a custom. At that point you have carte blanche to make it look better than new by adding details that would improve the appearance. Taillights, rear bumper chrome, detailed interior, a more appropriate color, etc. I personally would have made it look like John Lennons car with a psychedelic paint job. Keep studying and you will eventually get it right.

    • @pauly7218
      @pauly7218  5 років тому +1

      Grateful for the non-thumbs down and kind words. As to the criticisms, some are valid (After all, I'm new to doing these online) and some (IMHO) are not. Trust me - there is no orange peel. paint is glass smooth, so Not sure what you saw. As to drilling through the trunk, simply my choice - after all, I have already taken the car apart. Finally, I call it a restoration if trying for an original look, and custom when doing something never made, and believe that is very consistent with what others are doing as well. You'll note that no one is trying to make it "original". I love the idea of Lennons car, and you are so right about some camera angles. It's tough to balance camera and being able to work, but I hope to improve. I hope you'll hang with me and watch as I get better and better (and I will look forward to more critiques). Thanks...
