2021 Dan & Tally Sweat Award: Alicia Philipp

A champion of “doing the right thing” for Downtown Atlanta, Dan Sweat served as a past CAP President, leading the district through challenging seasons for Atlanta’s business and political communities. The award, designed to honor Dan Sweat’s heritage and accomplishments and renamed in 2020 to also acknowledge the accomplishments of Tally Sweat, is given to business and/or organizational leaders who have become quiet, effective leaders beyond the scope of their positions in the community. Each year, CAP selects a business and/or organizational leader who, like the Sweats, demonstrates true leadership and advocates for “doing the right thing” for Downtown.
A mentee of Dan and Tally Sweat, Alicia Philipp recently retired after serving as President & CEO of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for over 40 years. During her tenure, she led a team of experts that strengthened the 23-county Atlanta region by inspiring philanthropy and by providing quality services to donors and bold, innovative community leadership. The Community Foundation is a top-20 community foundation among 750 nationally, with approximately $1.2 billion in current assets, and is Georgia’s second largest foundation. Philipp has served on several boards, including Central Atlanta Progress, the Council on Foundations, the Southeastern Council of Foundations, Independent Sector and the National Center on Family Philanthropy. In 2017 she was named to Georgia Trend magazine’s Business Hall of Fame. She has also been named one of the “100 Most Influential Atlantans” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and to Atlanta magazine’s Atlanta 500. In 2019 she was recognized by the Atlanta Hawks basketball team as one of 50 Atlanta icons. Philipp received a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and an MBA from Georgia State University. In retirement, she plans to divide her time between Atlanta, Portugal, and Guatemala.
