Such craftsmanship, it's absolutely amazing how they carve the characters into the Shogi piece. Thank you for showing this to us, keep up the great work
also using calipers like that is inaccurate and slow. to setup a cut like that you should have gauge blocks ahead of time, especially if you're mass producing them as here. i see a lot of manual work being done here but the saw work is not impressive, it's dangerous.
yeah honestly I think it was the first time watching these videos that I actually thought "damn they should get some machines to do that part of the job instead"
I still remember shop class in high school, and one thing that was impressed upon us was the more exposed the blade is in operation, the bigger the 'hands free' zone needs to be. The guy would be MUCH better off using a bandsaw or scroll saw for the closer cutting work.
not sure why you guys so pussy about his fingers. do you also painfully watch a chef cutting his vegetable´s? its their profession... you can tell all employee´s in the video are part of this process for many years. so is the man with the saw i assume. no finger missing, no obvious scars on his hands. he is quite careful in my opinion and is very far away from losing fingers.
none. looking at how carefully he is putting pressure on the piece of wood i believe that even an earthquake wouldnt make him slip his fingers into the blade.
That is absurdly close to the sawblades. Surely there's a better way, even if they spent all their life making them in such a way and think it can't go wrong, it only needs to go wrong once... Why not use a sawstop, or at least a bandsaw...
he hasn't been running it for very long. watching this video reminds me of the videos of people in 3rd world countries arc welding with no protection, staring directly at the welding.
Minute 3:50, those fingers pick that piece very close to the blade... and his hands are shaking... a few years from now it's not going to be ok, he could use chopsticks to pick those pieces up, he should be pretty accustomed to using them.
Yup it's from the direction the pieces face. What makes shogi unique is that captured pieces change sides, so all the pieces from both players must be identical. It's pretty easy to get used to when you learn the game, I think.
Why don't the craftsmen use miter saws? They can do the same cuts for small pieces without the risk of fingers being pulled into the saw. This dude free-handed a few pieces. What happens when that blade goes a little dull? The piece will snag/jump and his fingers will go towards the blade suddenly.
these arent craftsmen, what we see in this video are random people being assigned a task who don't know any better. not only what they are doing incredibly dangerous, but also very inconsistent. they are often freehanding where a proper jig would be far faster and far more accurate. also note lack of ear protection.
Lower grade pieces are often made with Japanese maple, since that's a lot cheaper and more plentiful, but the fanciest pieces will be boxwood, with the top tier being boxwood from Mikurajima. Of course, a buyer can request any wood at all to be used, since it's all done by hand, but this video seems to be about boxwood pieces.
That lady painting the letters freehand is a real master of her craft.
Wow, beautiful hand-made pieces. I've never seen such quality chess pieces - all mass /machine produced.
Wow! The carving process is amazing! You have to be really precise when carving those letter 👍
Such craftsmanship, it's absolutely amazing how they carve the characters into the Shogi piece. Thank you for showing this to us, keep up the great work
craftsmanship and a real pleasure for the eyes
I heard of shogi before but ever seen one in person until now it came out nice 👍 are some set play with color stone or flat rock 😃✌️❤️
Fingers so close to that saw blade. I’d think they’d be motivated to come up with a safer way of doing that.
also using calipers like that is inaccurate and slow. to setup a cut like that you should have gauge blocks ahead of time, especially if you're mass producing them as here. i see a lot of manual work being done here but the saw work is not impressive, it's dangerous.
Những thợ thủ công làm quân cờ rất đẹp và khéo tay, Người Nhật rất giỏi hoa văn 🇯🇵👍
What a wonderful work! 🥰
The man placing his fingers near the saw blade gives me the shivers.😮
and he has a bandage on his fingers lmao. not long before he's gonna lose fingers or a hand.
yeah honestly I think it was the first time watching these videos that I actually thought "damn they should get some machines to do that part of the job instead"
Yeah me too. It's painful to watch people with zero regard for safety.
I still remember shop class in high school, and one thing that was impressed upon us was the more exposed the blade is in operation, the bigger the 'hands free' zone needs to be. The guy would be MUCH better off using a bandsaw or scroll saw for the closer cutting work.

do you also painfully watch a chef cutting his vegetable´s?
its their profession...
you can tell all employee´s in the video are part of this process for many years.
so is the man with the saw i assume. no finger missing, no obvious scars on his hands.
he is quite careful in my opinion and is very far away from losing fingers.
Nice video
Watching the dude on the table saw was stressful AF. How many fingers do their employees lose on average each year?
not only that he's doing things slow and inaccurate with those calipers. if they really are doing mass production they should be using gauge blocks.
none.
looking at how carefully he is putting pressure on the piece of wood i believe that even an earthquake wouldnt make him slip his fingers into the blade.
That is absurdly close to the sawblades. Surely there's a better way, even if they spent all their life making them in such a way and think it can't go wrong, it only needs to go wrong once...
Why not use a sawstop, or at least a bandsaw...
Wonderful ❤
"trabalho feito jogo" muito frágil...💖💖💖
I like Shogi very much. It was great to see how Shogi pieces are made. Thank you very much.
dude cutting wood with fingers centimeters away from the blade likes to live on the edge lol
Please, no cats were harmed... cat hair brushes😮
how has the fella on the saw, still got all of his fingers still intact ?
He has been careful, and lucky...so far.
he hasn't been running it for very long. watching this video reminds me of the videos of people in 3rd world countries arc welding with no protection, staring directly at the welding.
No hearing protection, no dust masks, no blade guards, no push blocks @2:57 uh... @3:39 wtf @3:45 wat @3:52 fffuuuu @4:08 omg no
👏🌸⛩️🇯🇵⛩️🌸👏
from Santiago Chile 🇨🇱
Seeing this as a European carpenter gives me a headache. I wonder how he still has 10 fingers left
😬👍
Wunderschön ... Beautiful 👌
why not print and paste it on the wooden pieces .
Shogi. Saying Japanese Chess is confusing
"testing" - yup these chess pieces definitely work.
The Japanese people are beautiful people and wonderful engineers, it’s why I own a Honda Accord here in the US. Well made and meant to last.
Minute 3:50, those fingers pick that piece very close to the blade... and his hands are shaking... a few years from now it's not going to be ok, he could use chopsticks to pick those pieces up, he should be pretty accustomed to using them.
Righthanded?🤔
$400-$500 for a good carved set. Another $4000 for thick table with feet.
Interesting, if Japan has their own language, then why did they borrow kanji from China? Video is good. 🙏.
What is that wood? Looks like boxwood.
👍💯
How do you know who's pieces are who's when deep into a game? from the character on the bottom? The direction the pieces face?
Yup it's from the direction the pieces face. What makes shogi unique is that captured pieces change sides, so all the pieces from both players must be identical. It's pretty easy to get used to when you learn the game, I think.

Oh!!
I didnt know... someone actually write the text by hand.....just wow
What wood is it ?
In Japanese it is called tsuge.
High quality piece material genuine boxwood.
very hard tough close-grained light yellow wood.
Shikamaru Nara brought me here.
why is he risking his fingers??? There are so great super cheap tool to work safe with a electric saw and tiny peaces of wood...
because they don't know any better. this is not craftsmanship, it is ignorance.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Shogi? This old dog is down to learn this new trick. I'm not expecting it to be as good as chess. But I'm interested.
I've no idea of what this game is about. It certainly is not chess.
I wish they mentioned the type of wood used. It looks like boxwood but I’m not sure.
My guess is Japanese birch from looking at the wood yard.
Lower grade pieces are often made with Japanese maple, since that's a lot cheaper and more plentiful, but the fanciest pieces will be boxwood, with the top tier being boxwood from Mikurajima.
GD that guy is going to those a couple of those fingers
Why? Japan is not even in the top ten countries with most grand masters. Spain has more than Japan 😂
