Rothenburg nad Tauber or simply Rothenburg[2] is one of the most popular cities in Germany among tourists, the pearl of the Franconian section of the Romantic Road. Located on the Tauber River. Subordinate to the administrative district of Middle Franconia. Part of the Ansbach district. Population is 11,025 people.
The name of the city is translated from German as “red castle above the Tauber”.
They say about Rothenburg ob der Tauber: a small town with a big reputation. Judge for yourself: only 11 thousand people live here, but over three million tourists come to this city, located in the Middle Franconia region, every year. All of them are attracted by medieval romance - cozy streets, low half-timbered houses and the atmosphere of a Christmas fairy tale that reigns there all year round.
Rothenburg has been around for more than a millennium - the first mention of the city dates back approximately to 970. At that time it was a castle belonging to the Count Reigner family. Over time, it became overgrown with houses of artisans and merchants' shops, turning into a busy center of trade and crafts.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the few German cities where the medieval city wall with towers has been completely preserved. The finished sets of the Middle Ages provided Rothenburg with an enviable film career. Film shootings regularly take place in the city, and once he almost ended up in a story about the main wizard. For the film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the film’s crew filmed the city center from a bird’s-eye view for two days, although in the end the scene was never included in the film, which residents of the city are still very worried about.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the only city in Germany where the Christmas spirit reigns all year round. Here is the German Christmas Museum, whose permanent exhibition tells about the history of the holiday itself and its traditions, as well as about popular German Christmas decorations. There is also a whole “Christmas Village” nearby - a showroom and store of the most famous German Christmas toy factory “Käthe Wohlfahrt”.
A popular delicacy, Rothenburger Schneeball, also reminds us of winter in the city. It is made from shortcrust pastry, which is first cut into strips, and then molded into a ball and sprinkled with powdered sugar - hence the name. Previously, such “snowballs” were baked for weddings and other holidays, but today they can be found all year round in every city bakery - for example, filled with marzipan or dipped in chocolate.
There is no better time to visit Rothenburg than before Christmas. The town seems to be posing for holiday photos: its streets, decorated with garlands and dusted with fluffy snow, acquire a special touching appeal.
Rothenburg is the official capital of German Christmas. Celebrating a holiday in such a sweet patriarchal atmosphere is the brightest memory for a lifetime, especially for children. However, even the most skeptical adult is unlikely to remain indifferent to the magnificent polyphonic fairs, saturated with the atmosphere of the upcoming holiday.
