i like this synth and its story , it was not rushed out and made available until it was doing the original concept from its designer . they could of stuck it out there years ago to buy but kept working on it
Love this synth. Both PWM synths have their own sound. I ended up buying both. Definitely a must have for anyone looking for additional colors to add to their pallet of sounds in the studio. And the price doesn’t hurt either.
@ Build quality on both are better than let’s say the Korg digital synths. Id say they similar to the first batch of Behringer clones (monopoly, poly D, Deepmind 12) before Behringer stopped using metal pots and reduced prices. PWM pots are a little stiff but I like that, patch points are better than most the Behringer stuff. So far so good no issues and I’ve have the malevolent for close to 2 years. To me there isn’t much around that will give you a unique sound in the analog in both price ranges. But that’s me. I could be wrong. But I own or have owned most the modern synths since 2010. So to answer your question I’d try out the Malevolent first. For the money it’s definitely gives you a taste of the Mantis.
I played this and met Paul Whittington from PWM at Synth East earlier this year and was impressed by both. The synth sounds unique and immensely inspirational while Paul was a thoroughly lovely chap. It’s definitely on my shopping list. Nice review Starsky 😊
8:32 now that sound is special. I can see this being a synth that inspires new genres, not just a.n.other analoguey synth. A bit like the way Are Friends Electric reset everyone's expectations synth music away from what it had been up to that point.
Yeah, I really dig that. Those are digital oscillators done right. It goes from otherworldly to harsh and grimy to fat and rubbery and everywhere in between, and I really like the layout. It's a good looking synth IMO Good stuff Starsky, top shelf demo.
Nice one, thanks. It took ages to put together - I've been playing with it a lot and each time I discovered new bits... always great for a synth but a pain to demo when you keep on finding new stuff to play with and try not to forget all the bits. I ended up making notes in the end :)
This certainly covers a lot of territory sonically. A brilliant all rounder for synth wave, rave techno. And seems also packed to brim with ability to create vaste selection of bread n butter sounds.
The BassStation was a revelation to me when it first came out. I started out with a Wavestation A/D and had no real concept of what an analog synth was. Tried a BassStation and immediately found the sounds I was after 😀
Too true. I had a Juno 2 and had instructions from somewhere on how to make a 303 style tone! I had absolutely no idea what the parameters were doing - programming one at a time was a headache. Bass station arrives and bingo everything falls into place.

Which do you prefer, bang for buck wise? How are they holding up physically

13:20 I’m glad you came back to this. It sounds great.

Great review/demo as ever Starsky .I love your cool glasses , where did you get them from ? Thanks.Reg.
I saw this in a video from Actrade show with Dr. Mix and Anthony Marinelli and they were both very impressed. It definitely sounds cool.
I like the PWM design language, both in this and the Malevolent. That British racing green with the black is sharp AF.
British racing turquoise!
Great stuff, been interested in this for a while
The mantis is an awesome I want one soooo bad
Sounds lovely!

Ha - Time Flyer! Great movie from my childhood!
Nice spot!
Sounds good, SH 101 like.
The Morlocks got to mine.
dude I need one of these too now 😂 my kids will understand
Quite a pedigree there. Nice 😎👍
Yeah, and it means a lot to PWM.
Speaking of Heathers, one of the Heathers is Lisanne Falk who was the 14 year old model on the cover of Foreigner's 1979 album Head Games.
Nice info
I wondered how long it would take you to get the Hoover out. 12.36. Nice.
So the small one has black sides that are magnetic… I kinda understood it’s because you can have other colors?
Finally.
..and first comment!
Acid Pandemonium!
I haven't watched yet (will do tommorow), but I already wonder if this thing needs 1.21 Gigawatts of power!?
jigawatts
Please PWM, make a desktop module version 🙏🏻
You mean to tell you built a time machine..... OUT OF A SYNTHESIZER!?
All synths are time machines… just start playing with one and hours instantly disappear 😂
@@StarskyCarr This bottle of Scotch.. also a time machine.
Just kidding I don't drink... Scotch.
@@theartistcurrentlyknownaszero I do, but only when playing synths :)
Can it even "Coil - Time Machines" (original), bro?
j/k
I missed a trick there!
