Wow!!! It's rare these days to see a truly unique comic who's not duplicating anyone else's material, but bravo, Robin Tran, that is YOU!! Amazing work -- dark, specific, a little naughty but a whole lot human, and very funny!!!
I found my new favourite comedian. I've been so disappointed with all the netflix specials that have been coming out for the past few years and I really thought stand up wasn't for me, but I was wheezing and rolling on the floor during Robin's set. This was some of the funniest material and delivery I have ever seen. Amazing talent, so excited to see more!

This is so unbelievably unfunny and I can't understand why people are laughing at these jokes. Not saying this to be transphobic but it seems like they're purposefully being an easy crowd just to prop up a trans person
Comedy is a pretty intricate combination of narrative structure, delivery and timing.
Maybe the risqué stuff is too much for you. But pretty much everything Robin does- having zero to do with before or after she came out- is basically a master class in comedy.
I get that you didn’t laugh, it’s not your flavor- but look at comics you like- forget the content (be it about bowling or ethnicity- form. The slow burn development, the flipping logic, the ability to 180 so the joke lands on themself, the reliance on ordinary human behavior having a surprise effect in context, the development allowing for an unexpected callback, …
Fine with me completely if you don’t find her funny.
I’m just pointing out what, objectively- is there that people- for whom this is their flavor- that they are laughing at, or complimenting about this set- that has everything to do with comedy writing structure and timing, that has nothing to with being trans, or Asian, etc.
I’m not looking for agreement or to change your mind about Robin. Not at all- what people find funny is and should be very individual.
Just pointing out- that as with writing a haiku, or sonnet, or comedy or eulogy- there’s actually a number of formal aspects- writing techniques- across comic genres that make for good comedy. I can think of a number of comics I don’t find funny but whose comedy writing I recognize, and comics whose personalities I find appealing- but whom I feel bad for because they don’t know how to structure their bits to maximize the funny.
I am not a big fan of contrapuntal ballet choreography- but I can appreciate the work and talent that goes into a Balanchine. Even if I would not pay for a ticket to see it.

Considering that people unironically find people like Brendan Schaub and Amy Schumer funny, I'm going to hold my breath for some long ass reddit post about why I "just don't appreciate" or "understand" the humor. It's just not funny, period. People are idiots and will laugh at anything, just go to any local comedy club and watch people do bits on game of thrones, star wars, or surface level politics. That stuff KILLS and people lop it up like robotic sitcom humor garbage. It's really not that deep and Robin Tran just isn't funny.
