Cubic zirconia and moissanite are both common diamond simulants that are found in the market. CZ is a much cheaper alternative and can be found in costume jewelry at departmental stores. Due to its cheap prices and yet somewhat similar appearance to diamond, CZ is one of the most popular diamond alternative.
On the other hand, moissanite is a much more expensive option compared to CZ. It is roughly 10-15 times more expensive and has different optical properties due to its double refractive index.
The differences between a moissanite and CZ are quite easy to see visually. Moissanite displays more fire and takes on an oily appearance. CZ appears more clean and crisp which gives it more resemblance to a diamond.
In this video, we use a diamond tester to perform a test on both of these gemstones to see the results. CZ can be easily detected as a non-diamond gemstone by the tester. However, moissanite turns up as a positive reading for diamond. This is due to the limitations of these types of diamond testers.
The heat probe method utilized by this tester checks for the thermal conductivity of the unknown gemstone. Since moissanite has similar thermal properties like diamond, it tests wrongly as a diamond!
So, if you are shopping for a real diamond ring from an unreliable seller, you need to be careful of getting a fake stone especially if there is no grading report or if the seller attempts to justify the gemstone's authenticity with a diamond tester like this.
