Performance:

Lesson:
• Duran Duran - Last Cha...
I tried something different with the camera angle this time. If you want to see what the other hand is doing watch "Rio!" By the way, I'm not stoned! It's just been really hot here in L.A. ;+)
HI all! Please enjoy my updated videos of Last Chance on the Stairway. Performance - ua-cam.com/video/_wjjCEIZdQU/v-deo.html Lesson - ua-cam.com/video/S6oqSSBljcM/v-deo.html
15 years later, this is still the best rendition of one of JT's best bass lines. Awesome job dude!!
Thank you very much Paul! I really appreciate you returning after all these years. 😎🎶
Indeed, this video is always refreshing to watch. My reaction may be due to its smooth flow from the slow demonstration of individual notes into the final rendition that gives non-musical viewers such as myself a whole new insight on the bass line in the song.
@@alexvesey6039 Thank you for the kind words!
I came here to say the same thing! Haha and I somehow never “liked” this. Should be in my “favorites”!
@@Metalgopher 😎🤘
Spot ON! I take no shame whatsoever saying Duran Duran's Rio album is imo, one of the top 10 albums ever. When I first heard John Taylor, my mind didn't say "boy band", it said "who the heck is that great bass player?!"
I always came here ...I´m from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .... and all the time put your video to play without audio , only to give you hours of view on youtube... I hope everybody can do this... you´re de best. When not working... full volume....
JT is so underated as a bassist. He deserves far more recognition. This song has one of my favourite basslines, ever!
Absolutely the BEST DD song in my opinion. The bass line is quite varied and the ghost notes are a John specialty. Zuma, you NAILED it!! Keep up the great work.
Grande Zuma...questa è la risposta a chi pensava che i DD non sapessero suonare!!!Pezzo del 1982 e avevevano ventanni come me...
Thank you Zuma!! Don't know how many times I checked to see if someone posted this song on YT! I'm no musician but it's a real treat to see...Keep on posting!
One of the few I have heard cover this this good....ghost notes and all...wow!
Love the bass line, shame John hasn't made this kind of melodic lines the last 20 years....,still great bass player Zuma, YOU too !
Magnificent bass line, zuma you are what we say in Italy "un manico" - great string touch, very precise rithm, simply a great player.

Give him a break, man. This is exactly what I was looking for, so obviously it's labelled clearly enough. It does say "bass lesson" after all. That's what it is. And as usual, he did a great job.
AMAZING!!! another great song performance of zuma! Gosh, I love that bass sound dammit!
But please don't hide your other hand!it's part of the fun of watching it! Thank you!
That was way too cool! Thanks for sharing!
You do Geddy Lee proud, oh wait...
Simply smooth and purely awesome, well done Sir!
zuma ... i listened to this song so often when i was young .. i admired jt so much .. it makes me smile to see how you play the bass man ... would love to do it like you ... great
Love this song! I play guitar, and just bought my first bass. I always loved John Taylor bass playing, and thanks to your lesson, now I can play it.... Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
You're welcome. That's great! Glad to hear you picked up bass as well!
Mr. Zuma. I have "favorited" all your bass lessons. I really enjoy hearing the isolated bass from all these great D2 songs. Will you have time to do any more? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear more of your great bass. Thanks again. Mark in California.
Just wow!! Fantastic job man! 👏
Thank You and thanks for watching, however, please watch my updated set! ua-cam.com/video/_wjjCEIZdQU/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/S6oqSSBljcM/v-deo.html
Fascinating! Great to highlight just how complex the bass-line is on that song and how underrated John Taylor is as a bass player - he's NOT just a pretty face!
@mrlee192 - A ghost note is created by striking the string normally with your plucking/picking hand but muting it with your fretting hand. It should sound like a percussive thud or maybe a little sharper if you are using a pick. It's basically selective muting if you want to look at it that way. It brings the funk and moves a piece along quite nicely. You probably already do it subconsciously.
Dear Zuma,
You're a great bass player !
Love the Taylor stuff !
Thanks, greetings from Belgium
Ken Marcelis
Very Nice. Thanks for Posting.
Nice work!
JT and the gang would be proud
Thank You Rob! I sure hope they call me to sub one of these days. He he.
Great job! Watching it in real time was awesome!
Thanks johndavidhowell! I remember hearing this song way back in 1985 or so and completely falling in love with it. I still do!
SOS UN MAESTRO! you are a master... so clear... it is a pleasure seeeing your vids
This my friend, is simply stunning. Well done you!
Awsome job! Definitely one of my favorite DDs. That and lonely in your nightmare just to name a couple.
theme!
cool bass, cool bass line, cool basser, cool cover!
very nice!
@zumazmusic Thank you. I too appreciate being corrected (like what your video did for me for one B note in the chorus of Last Chance on the Stairway - thanks for posting!).
A year later, still Mastering this darn song!! Lol the ghost notes really get me!!
Nice Aldene! I like to think of a horse galloping. Somehow, that helps me get through them. 😎🎵🤘
@@zumazmusic thank you sir. I just simply need a few min to do those finger exercises before I start playing almost any JT bassline.
Outstanding!!! Five starts isn't enough!!
Fantastic - I really love it how it comes together at the end :)
Awesome! thanks! love this bass line!
Right on! 😎🤘
great job this will be helpful to me, since this is the song im going to learn today, john taylor is such a awesome bass player totally under rated .
@blackworm27 - no problem...I took the song in ProTools and looped these parts and you are absolutely right, those two notes should be a half step lower. I will adjust the video info and possibly redo this or at least post a video response. Thanks! A combination of playing it the wrong way forever and ear fatigue when I'm trying to relearn these lines is not a good combo!
great seeing this video! this song brings me a nice memory, thanks!
Awesome job! Thank you very much. Love John Taylor, and love the work you've done figuring these out for all of us fans and bass players.
wow man your awesome i love duran durans album rio i just bought it not long ago and it has the best bass riffs ever :P
Enjoyed this - cheers mate........used to go to the Rum Runner myself ;o)
love it , i wish so much i could play a little at least like you
Zuma, You're amazing. Love the song mate!
Great work there, am so trying to learn but its hard but great bass line to learn, always wondered how ghost notes work too, now how about the another glorious bass line off that album - Hold Back The Rain? love to see that!
Thanks for posting. Love this track.
Absolutely brilliant! Well done!
Oh man, this is soo good! One of my favorite DD songs ever and a wicked bass groove. Havin' tons of fun playing this, thanks!
Your bass tone is spot on amazing!
Too kind, too kind! 😻🎶😻🎶
Absolutely wonderful!
@blackworm27 - again, your are right and I sincerely appreciate the corrections. Please point out absolutely anything else you hear.
nailed it!!! brilliant job.
Thanks for your help Zuma!I will follow your advice.
Take care!
fantastic as usual many thanks, have you had a go on the Night Verson of Go My own Way, great fun too
@korbeta - Just keep at it! You sound like you have some great gear. It will just take time to hear the tone in your head. We never stop chasing it!!!
Always nice to hear, thanks.
@mrlee192 - Simply a note that you play but don't fully fret out. Sometimes refferred to as mutes. If you get into slap bass you'll deal with them a lot.
hey that was great, i love duran duran, would you please do shadows on your side please.
Pure Awesomeness!
you are ridiculous!! ! so fast! .... very nice! great vid!
Yo Zuma you ae the shiznik! You Sound exactly as the record. Post some more lessons. Hopefully I can see you perform Lonely in your nightmare. Keep on Rockin Kid.
Magnifique!!!!!
The more I listen and play this bass line in particular, the more I feel as though Geddy Lee could have written it. JT and GL are my major influences on bass and music that features synthesizers in their sound.
I often wonder if they ever checked out each others music, that would be kinda cool to know ... :)
Also Zuma, you really inspire me to keep getting more verse in my chops. Thanks man.
"Manico?!" I like that! Grazie infinite!
@iconic558 - Everytime I pick up a bass, I play the night version of My Own Way. It's almost a sickness I tell you. I can't help it!!!
Great cover
+Petra Ariely - Thank You!!!
Again, Qué bueno eres!! Gracias
And just so you know I'm not trying to be a smartass, I don't play it half as well as you! Amazing sound, I hope to get as good as you someday.
@blackworm27 - Your comments are kind and sincere. I wish more people were like you. Moreover, you have a great ear.
Thanks for Zumaz!I'm planning a trip this summer to Canada so I think I will get one when I'm there.
You know with the euro exchange rate I can get a pretty good bass for nnot that much.
By the way you are amazing with the bass!
I would like to learn some Duran songs, there my all time favourite band.
Sould I get a bass with passive pickups or active ones?
Thank Again Zumaz! Really appreciate your advice.
David
Hi Zumaz! I finally got a bass(it's a musicman reproduction and it was only 150 euros) and the notes of this song on it,well kind of (my first song on bass! Thanks to you.)
But there's is no way for the ghost notes to sound right plus I need to speed up a lot more.
I guess practice is the word, but I just wanted to say thanks for this video buddy!
Ciao!
Another perfect job! OK if anybody could answer this it would be you. How do you rank JT as a bass player? I mean on those first two albums he sounded like a seasoned pro and he couldn't have been over 22 and had been playing bass only a few years from what I hear. Pretty classic stuff for such a "rookie!" IMO. Would like to hear your opinion of him and what some of your favorite points of his playing are. Thank You for these videos.
I have heard it all when it comes to John. My opinion? He's my hero, a huge influence on me, and he was a great bass player all the way back to his early 20's. I have live footage of them in 1981 if anyone needs proof!
The "ghosties" are when you play a note with your right (or picking) hand and mute it with your left (or fretting) hand. It's sounds like a tick or a thud. It's a must-know for funky bass playing in my opinion.
@johnteekay , @richardsnow - Thanks guys! I really appreciate it!
I have been following your page (unofficially) since 2007, upon discovering your Girls on Film performance. I would /love/ it if you would pump out more videos!
Thank You cdx00! I will have something soon!
well im sitting here with my aria... if your get a chance or have not already check out SIT strings im using the ultra bright steel ones and you can REALLY hear the aria with them....its funny...all these years ive known you I can always refer to these videos.. hope you are doing ok my friend and enjoying your summer..im ok..things are ok.. working on getting a better am..guy in MI is building me a fretless.. im kinda interested in a PJ bass...im assuming its the best of both bass's the arias is great but its not suitable for everything because I think its geared towards mids and highs.. but im so grateful to have it back at least.
I am so dusting off my bass! Thanks for this!
Gracias hombre! Haber si hago otro video esta semana. Ai nos vemos!
thanx...well...rock on!!
Then how about posting a video of the drum sections of some of the DD songs? I'd be interested in watching them.
Awesome. Period.
What a great helpful post. Thanks! I do have a question though. I absolutely love that fat tone you got going. I've been trying to get my G&L Jazz bass to come close to your tone but no luck (even with a 10-Band EQ pedal, Compression or my two Bass DI's). Suggestions? Thanks! :)
PS have you ever though of covering mark egan when he did arcadias the promise?? hes on my facebook and is just an amazingly nice man...like I said my fretless is coming..and this guy KNOWS his stuff..i was never really happy with the fretless bass's ive had in the past...but ive seen videos of the things he does and some good players and its like Eagan meets pallidino!
Man, u sure can play those Duran songs..loved Duran...how bout some Level 42 tunes?
:-)
Moving up to hit the E D on the G string in the verse is still missing me up every time..This song takes madskillz.
I've covered that question before...basically, no EQ, just a little compression. The sound is the magic of the SB1000.
@ibdnw - More coming soon! I promise. I have to go to this thing they call WORK. It's so annoying and they make me go at least 40 hours a week. ;+)
can you try Heaven 17 penthouse and pavement if it's a real base?😣
bravo!!!
Please tel me what set (rig wise) you use... sound is AWESOME
Awesome! Great job, damn, I never realized how fast and difficult to play the bass line is for this song. I love this song and have listened to it for years. (What are ghost notes?)
Nice.....
I love your posts...
superb.
good jerb dood, u rawk, and i mean that in the truest sense...
BRAVO !!!
beautiful :)
do you have a facebook page!!! Awsome what you're doing!!! Thanks!
