    Some machine! Was lucky enough to get a footplate ride from Pickering to Grosmont on SNG. What struck me was how noisy it was in the cab.

      It's Infront of the driver in the left hand side. It's a small red handle that is pulled towards the driver

    Thank you for an exceptional experience, with exceptional filming that gave me the impression of being on the footplate while watching. Steam engines are something I've always loved, I spent hours watching them with my grandfather at Peterborough. Now it's on the floor with my Hornby engines, including Sir Nigel Gresley, and watching these great videos of steam engines.

    That's great and thanks for posting it up. Some excellent editing between the outside and inside views at appropriate times I think.

    80" drivers, 21 feet per revolution. Looks like she's just loafing along.
    Thanks for showing the combining gear working!
    Looks to be pretty easy on the fireman. Wiki talks about the steam piping being streamlined internally, a combustion chamber added, and a Kylchap exhaust. Similar to the steam flow experiments that William Woodard at the US Lima Locomotive Works did to produce the revolutionary "Super Power" locos.
    I can see why Nigel was knighted.

      A4s were designed to run up and down the East Coast Mainline.This trip is like a gentle walk for the A4 😂 .
      Hopefully she will be back in the mainline in the next month or two, doing 75mph with 12 coaches.

    Fabulous video. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the wheel turned by the driver?

    • @nymrfootage
      @nymrfootage  Рік тому +3

      That is the reverser for controlling the direction the loco moves and the steam cut off. Similar to gears on a car.
      The reversers works from 75% back gear to 75% Full forward with different cut offs between full back and full forward gear.
      Mid gear or 0% is like neutral on a car. The loco won't move if steam is applied.
      When departing you would usually set the reverser to full forward or full back then move the reverser to a suitable cut off when you get to crusing speed.

    Used to see her on a Sunday by my home when I lived in Buckinghamshire in the 1980's. Still beautiful thanks to the efforts of all those people. Thanks for saving her and the terrific filming!!!

    What's the role of the two guys ! Passengers !

    • @nymrfootage
      @nymrfootage  Рік тому +2

      There's a driver, fireman, owners representative and footplate passenger.
      Usually there would be the driver and fireman owner but the loco was a visiting loco to the railway so the drivers representative often goes out to check the loco is running ok after it's move to the railway. The footplate passenger is a member of the loco owning group so was allowed to accompany the footplate crew.

    How is the firebox riddled to get rid of the accumulating ash?

    • @nymrfootage
      @nymrfootage  Рік тому +1

      The firebox has a drop grate towards the front. This is opened for the ash to be pushed through and into the ashpan when it can then be dropped into the pit for removal

      @@nymrfootage OK, so the ash drops away under gravity, or with assistance from the fireman, while the loco is running?

    Thanks for sharing. Always fascinating to see how easily these beasties can get moving.
    Had me thinking how relatively difficult it must have been to maintain a clear control of the boiler levels / injectors at night-time with the strong firebox glow distracting.
