Most of you do not seem to understand the market. This amp is not meant to take the place of the high end amps. the bulk of amps are not purchased by professional musicians. This amp is clearly aimed at the hobbyist who would like an amp that sounds good and has built in effects. Or the weekend warrior that does not want to haul around a lot of equipment. I have played this amp, and was very pleased with the tones. No it's not a Plexi or JCM, but can you get a Plexi like tone from a JCM?
if you play this amp in real life it really isn't bad, considering its part of the new marshall thing that people seem to dislike it actually holds up decently
I use two different Superlead Plexis plus a jcm 800 combo, and I love my jmd. I hate modeling stuff and all that, but they got it right with this jmd. Tons of the stuff I never use cause I'm not crazy about everything it does, but I've got 16 presets of stuff I love and this amp really blows me away. Beware of the footswitch though. I've already had to buy a couple extras after a few hard shows on the road. Also, old peavey bandits n Marshall master leads are great solid states
One tone factor you have to have in consideration are the speakers. This amp sounds best with Celestion V30 or Greenbacks. I tried the JMD with a 1960A cab with Greenbacks and a 1x12 cab with a V30 in it, and with both configurations sounded amazing!
Using it now with a Marshall 4X12 V 30. It has the same advantages and disdvantages as other modelling amps. Best for distorted powerchords. Lots of very good sounds with wonderful harmonics !! But cleansounds make you wonder- as usual. Plug in a normal analog tube amp that does not take away lots of frequensies and you hear it. Exception here is one or two of the models that give very authentic feedback. Amazing Impressing supplementary amp but you will need a good tube amp as well.
@bolson678 More specifically, output tubes. I think that was the distinction. Many modelling amps will use a tube as a pre-amplifier. I think Vox were the first to figure out that it's possible to emulate a tube pre-amp with solid state, but not the power amp stage, so Vox use a 12AX7 where an output tube would sit. Looks like Marshall have taken it a step further to use a tube designed for the power amp.
@Pooxer yeah. i mean i play progressive metal, so mesa did it for me, marshall was too vintagey. and most kids are biased. i mean, mesa is awesome, but there are amps out there that are a lot better than mesa/boogie. and yes, i do own a mesa .
@liedjaeger Yes you can, you can connect either 1 8ohm cabinet, 1 16 ohm cabinet or 2 16 ohm cabinets. And yes, as in any amp the speakers really make a difference tonewise. I use Celestions V30 and it sounds amazing!! I think the sound can actually improve with Eminence Governors. I'm pretty happy with my JMD100 running through the V30.
@utility18 Thanks for the reply. I ended up ordering just the head and will use one of my 1960 cabs until I get another one just for the JMD. High Hopes for this puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Decrypted33 I would say its an AWESOME metal amp. I've tried Mesas, Egnaters, Peaveys, Trace Elliots, Bugeras etc etc, and I felt them pretty fizzy, cold and without dynamics. I always thought that the tone that as on my mind was product of a 6l6 based amp, but I was pretty wrong. I have to admit that I really hated Marshall before I tried this amp and the Kerry King JCM800, (this last is an outstanding amp by the way). The JMD has 2 metal modes(at least), the JVM and the Mode Four.
@utility18 Hey Brother. I'm looking to add this to my amp arsenal, and you're the only one I've found on the web who's referred to the MG412 cabinet. I was wondering if a 1960 is that much better, as I have two( one 8ohm and one 16ohm) that I use for different Marshalls already. I could use them and save the money. Anyway I'd really appreciate your opinion if you have time to respond. From a fellow tone-head, thanks.....
@Langtw What you say may be true. However, a careful look will reveal that most of the times these (newer) amps are trying to mimic the sound of a classic amp (which was much simpler). In the process they lose all individuality and the amp cannot be faithful to the classics they are attempting to recreate. I think a great guitar tone has to be built from bottom up with the amp as one of the basic bricks. The current top down approach of readymade tone solutions is intrinsically flawed.
The JVM is tight, warm and very dynamic; if I had to choose a word to describe it I would say "alive". The ModeFour is very scooped, thick and agressive; has lots of gain and bass. It can sound muddy if you dime the gain and bass knobs, but that way is how I get a very thick and powerfull hardcore tone a la JCM800 with Kt88's. I really really love the JMD100.
@youtubkevin i guess since its always paul reviewing the amps and hes got his own taste and preferences. if i try out different amps, there might be differences, but i try to dial in a tone i like, so in the end i guess they would all sound similar as well
Marshall had it half right with the early Valvestate amps like the 8080. It had an ecc83 tube (mini 12ax7) but a solid state power section. Why not have a single preamp mini-tube in this? This would be then, an "all Tube" hybrid amp. snobbery avoided for another $6.. I don't get that.
I own a JMD:102 which is the combo 100watts 2x12. The speakers inside mine make the amp sound anything like the sounds on this video, mine really sounds very bad. The big difference is the speakers you plug the amp to. I'm switching from the chinestions inside to two different Eminence speakers to suit the wide arrange of sound capabilities. I wonder if I could connect my JMD to a 4x12 cabinet, like the 1960 one. Do any one know if I can do it?, the clerk at the store couldn't answer.
You probably tried it out on a 4-12 by now, I'm very late with my comment. Lol . yes you can use it on any 4-12 cabinet. Simply disconnect the internal speakers short cable from the speaker output and plug a 4-12 cab into that same output. That store clerk is not very knowledgeable imo.
The 100W combo version of the JDM1 is a 2X12 loaded with 2 different speakers. I would assume that it was intended in the ''multi tonal'' design, so you wouldn't get a uniform sound through a pair of identical speakers & would be able to play with different mics placement to ''optimize'' the tones you're trying to replicate. It's supposed to be able to do Jazz, Blues, 70's Rock and nice classical cleans too, so that 2 different speakers design makes sense. Now, if you want to use the JDM1 for Metal, it rocks a JVM410, JCM800 & JMP-1 preamp overdrive and lead tones, so I'd go for a Marshall 1960B cab (the flat faced/bottom cab of the JCM900 full stack) loaded with 4 Vintage 30. That thing would blast the living sh*t of any metalheads audience.
line 6 did that w/ the spider valve and snobbery was still all over it....ppl just does get that solidstate has come a loooooong way in the past 10 myears w/ the axe fx and stuff like that...i do play all tube 5150 III but i keep an open mind to everything because everything will and does evolve.....
Paul is a good player but the way he sets up the amps tones is definitely not the best. Too bad. And maybe the mic placement is not so great as well. Guitar World is not the best place for demo videos. Better to check on the manufacturer's site instead
Why is Marshall, and for that matter other manufacturer going in the direction of cluttering up their amps with unnecessary modelling, channels, knobs and effects??? What happened to the classic approach exemplified by a JCM800?
Perhaps Marshall, and others, should stop trying to make a solid state amp sound like a tube amp... but remember that not everyone can afford to buy a tube amp - including myself, and I've been playing for nearly 15 years now. I'm currently stuck with a 2000 Marshall AVT150 combi, because life hasn't taken me down a route where I can spend more than a few hundred on an amp :(
Sorry,but you are misleading people,this amp does not sound like that raw, you have mastered the track with all the cab sims,EQ's,filters,gates and so on.
i dont like the channel memory or effects , too much clutter imo. ... Also would be cool less talking and spend a bit more time demonstrating the amp. The metal style was fast & only 1 riff basically, couldnt really tell how good or tight the crunch is or palm mutes. just sounded like fast rock to my ears.
Dont waste your money on amp heads that have effects. You get the best sound buy just playing through a tube marshall loud. You get even better sound buy playing through a rockerverb 50
@gothyke You just can't judge an amp because of these reviews. They just sound awful. I bet you are one of those that can't resist to talk shit about something you haven't tried. Let me tell you, I own it and love it. I did a a/b comparison between this and a DSL 100 and there was almost no difference between them tonewise. It's not only the best modeling amp I ever tried, it's the best Marshall I've ever had.
If that's what you need to tell yourself to feel good about your shitty amp, then by all means say what you want. I'll still take my JCM 900 and JVM any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
These amps sound like cold dog shit! I made the mistake of buying this head, and couldn't wait to dump it. I played it through a vintage 1970's Marshall 4x12, and the head sounds weak compared to my JCM 900 head. I bought a JVM210 and it smokes this head like a ham!
I disagree,you are the one who can tell the difference,modelling amps are easier to play and require less specialized setup,but there is a huge difference how they feel.Play AXE-FX against real accoustic drums on stage,then take JCM 800,and tell me you feel no difference.
@LatvianXave8 Well, in my band, one of our guitarists uses one of the Line 6 Valves, so I know that it doesn't sound bad. Haha But, yeah, both amps sound good. Like, as long as you shell out a good bit of money, you're, more then likely, going to get a pretty good head.
Honestly, the best guitar sound I've had running a 83 Les Paul, MXR distortion through an Amped bass SVT head, 8x10 cab.
God, that crunch was awesome!
Blackstar's TVP "Godfather". Same developers left Marshall and founded Blackstar Amplification Co.
awesome sounding amp!!!! and great playing from paul as usual!
Just bought this head, my first Marshall and it beats all amps i have got! It Rocks hell! Metal, Rock, Blues or Acoustic, it does its job!!
FINALLY, a GW clip that doesn't spend it's entire time talking about "this is how the clean channel sounds" ...
if you play this amp in real life it really isn't bad, considering its part of the new marshall thing that people seem to dislike it actually holds up decently
I really like the idea of this amp seems to be very versatile tone wise, I don't see why people hate it.
I like his bangs.
One tone factor you have to have in consideration are the speakers. This amp sounds best with Celestion V30 or Greenbacks. I tried the JMD with a 1960A cab with Greenbacks and a 1x12 cab with a V30 in it, and with both configurations sounded amazing!
@LTLfilms Charvel is a division of Fender.
Using it now with a Marshall 4X12 V 30. It has the same advantages and disdvantages as other modelling amps. Best for distorted powerchords. Lots of very good sounds with wonderful harmonics !! I agree 100%,listen what Guthrie Govan is saying about modelling amps,and real tube amps played on stage against accoustic drums.
@ 0:20 I went "YESSSS!"
@Pooxer yeah. i mean i play progressive metal, so mesa did it for me, marshall was too vintagey. and most kids are biased. i mean, mesa is awesome, but there are amps out there that are a lot better than mesa/boogie. and yes, i do own a mesa .

This really reminds me of the Line 6 Spider Valve Series hybrid heads, only without the cool light up face. Hahaha
It doesn't seem like most Marshall's but It would totally fit my style.
@chillernz bought it, and the awnser is YES YES YES!!!!!!!
@utility18 Thanks for the reply. I ended up ordering just the head and will use one of my 1960 cabs until I get another one just for the JMD. High Hopes for this puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are so right! People who compares this amp to any Line6,is because they haven't tried it. Tone snobs..
@malvekx
Thanks. really appreciate it. now i can live happily ever after.
Does this amp have the 1959 slp on preamp tones
@AirgunAddict256 broderick uses AXE FX ULTRA which pwns JMD
thats pauls fav guitar
Guess who wants this amp? THIS KID DOES
@Decrypted33 I would say its an AWESOME metal amp. I've tried Mesas, Egnaters, Peaveys, Trace Elliots, Bugeras etc etc, and I felt them pretty fizzy, cold and without dynamics. AMAZING
@funkydoodycool Just to let you know there are Peavey and Carvin tube amps that you can buy used for a few hundred bucks that sound pretty damn good.
@blast3000 Its called studio sound
@utility18 Hey Brother. I'm looking to add this to my amp arsenal, and you're the only one I've found on the web who's referred to the MG412 cabinet. will this amp be nice 4 metal?????
Ohhh yeah... easily. It's ridiculously badass sounding.
the compression rate u tube uses to meet the format protocols
Paul Rocks!!!!!!!!!!! :D
marshall 4 life
@Langtw What you say may be true.

WTF, Why are the screws missing from the pickguard?..................

that charvel looks pretty sweet...

it actually has single preamp tube
To me, comparing Softube's technology (like Vintage/Metal Amp Room) with Line 6's is like comparing a VW Polo to a Lamborghini.
Line sucks!
I own a JMD:102 which is the combo 100watts 2x12. The speakers inside mine make the amp sound anything like the sounds on this video, mine really sounds very bad. @@rickleblanc8900 doesn't this have 2 power outputs on the back panel by the efx loop? I know all my other Marshall 2x12 combos do.
what cab would you recommend for JMD 100w head?
The 100W combo version of the JDM1 is a 2X12 loaded with 2 different speakers. This makes me think I made the right decision to buy a Mesa mark 5, but I still like the sound , I'll just use ampkit, lol
line 6 did that w/ the spider valve and snobbery was still all over it....ppl just does get that solidstate has come a loooooong way in the past 10 myears w/ the axe fx and stuff like that...i do play all tube 5150 III but i keep an open mind to everything because everything will and does evolve.....
@Hellad00d hybrid amps arent so bad. I got vox ad 30 vt - xl and it sound great.
@funkydoodycool - listen to mudbone80! i picked up a carvin X100B five years before the reissues came out for $400.
why do all the amps on guitarworld sound similar??
change mics?
@21stCENTURYBOY12
Paul did a demo on the guitar a while ago =)
MEGADETH!!!
@emanon909 It's made in USA Charvel So-Cal Style 1 2H
black jesus i want this
This is probably the best Paul has ever sounded. What is the deal? Did he not have time to make it sound as shitty as he could this time?
@emoguy372 its a charvel san dimas i think
@ZombieResurection it's a charvel soCal
@felipeandjason I did, now I'm selling my Spidervalve 112 and my Bugera 6262.
Sorry, but, the real thing sounds a lot better than this video. This is tripe.
Paul is a good player but the way he sets up the amps tones is definitely not the best. Too bad. And maybe the mic placement is not so great as well. Guitar World is not the best place for demo videos. Better to check on the manufacturer's site instead
@nostealthebucket9009 it all depends on what your playing dude, i advocate mesa as well, but sometimes those marshalls just floor you
@Craze6000
After what I have heard, YES!!! \m/
@emoguy372 it's a charvel soCal
Why is Marshall, and for that matter other manufacturer going in the direction of cluttering up their amps with unnecessary modelling, channels, knobs and effects???
What happened to the classic approach exemplified by a JCM800?
Can this jmd 100 run through a m412a marshall cabnet?
Maybe a little late replying. I have that exact setup and it not the best. Might sound better with a better cabinet.
@gabedom420 Totally agree. There was just nothing good then. Sounded a lot better in the next section of overdrive though
Perhaps Marshall, and others, should stop trying to make a solid state amp sound like a tube amp... but remember that not everyone can afford to buy a tube amp - including myself, and I've been playing for nearly 15 years now. I'm currently stuck with a 2000 Marshall AVT150 combi, because life hasn't taken me down a route where I can spend more than a few hundred on an amp :(
Sounds decent, but prefer the H&K Switchblade & Diezel Vh4.
Wonder if those Chinese pots hold up like British Made Amps ?
@AirgunAddict256 lol I just love Megadeth
Sorry,but you are misleading people,this amp does not sound like that raw, you have mastered the track with all the cab sims,EQ's,filters,gates and so on.

MA or JMD?

@blast3000 They dont know their eq very well, that or very poor mic placement or even mixing
@funkydoodycool
Then just buy a Laney Cub head
Sounds like they are using some close range mics and some "room mics". Phase issues can occur while doing this.
i thought marshal was the badass making the amps THEY want with real tones.. not line6 ;P
ENGL > Everything else
I disagree,you are the one who can tell the difference,modelling amps are easier to play and require less specialized setup,but there is a huge difference how they feel.Play AXE-FX against real accoustic drums on stage,then take JCM 800,and tell me you feel no difference.

Review one that goes up to 11.
@OndskapensHersker nope, gjelder å være superførst
Meh...new Marshall stuff never really does it for me.
Spider Valve MKII Sounds WAY Better!
@timm63 lmfao
@OndskapensHersker HAHA fail XD
He has to have bangs, he has a 6 head.....
sigh this is realy disappointing coming from marshall. aint too happy with their POS MG series too
IM MORE INTERESTED IN THAT SEXUAL GUITAR:O thumbs up if you think its an epic guitarxD
@timm63 $1100
First! I AM SO COOL!
Sounds alot like most of the new Marshalls i've heard lately... like shit!
