    There's just something satisfying about a really good chisel cutting through wood.

    I have to do a similar repair to a Squire Strat I recently picked up, though just one side. Some notes from me; first I was an antique furniture repair person for over 30 years so I've learned a trick or two about mending and replacing wood. To repair the holes in the bottom of your cut out space, make a jig and use a forstner bit to flat bottom drill them until the hole is gone. Don't go thru the body, be careful. Use maybe a 3/4 in bit. Then use a 3/4 in plug cutter to make a plug to fill the hole you just drilled. When gluing the plug, use a chisel to make a small vertical cut in the side of it to release the glue pressure in the bottom as you drive it in and let excess glue escape. Put something very solid under it when you drive it in. If you can get a clamp on it that will work too. When it's bonded flatten the surface and then glue on your repair piece. When done like this when you insert the new posts it will help to retain the repair piece from pulling off from string pressure as if you'd put two big dowels into it down into the body. Just sayin' Mike

    I had to do the same thing on my strat recently. Quick tip: if you ever need to get those bushings out and there are no through-holes like at 12:48, you can take a long screw, fix the piece of wood in place against the screw head somehow (for example using steel clamps from a milling machine) and just drive the screw in to pull the bushing out. This will pull them out very cleanly, even if they are glued in.

    Fantastic work- looks like an HRR Strat. I have one- they're notorious for this as they're basswood and prone to cracking if they take a bump. Had mine repaired twice so far, but not had a block of wood put in yet. About to drop a brass block into the Floyd on mine...

      It likely had alder or ash as the original wood. Mahogany might affect tone. It’s also, in my experience, a “softer” wood, which might pose problems given the bridge routing

    Realize this is an old post, but this points out the design problem w Floyd Rose if bridge pickup is humbucker there is very little space between it and posts! Since posts are designed to be at 25" from nut! Making a guitar now and thinking of moving pickup route 3/8" or so toward neck. Humbucker field so wide should not be too much treble loss. Besides, lot or rockers tune down to Eb anyway. My new favorite is the VegaTrem bridge.

    Great video. I did a very similar repair to my 1977 Aria Pro II Flying V. It had an original non fine tuning Floyd Rose and the tremelo screws started tilting forward and downtuning on me. Used updated parts from StewMac and plays like when I first bought it in 1982.

    Watched the whole thing even do it was not what I was searching for. Amazing job!
    Been looking around to see whether or not it would be possible to fully fill in an Ibanez RG7620's bridge cavity on the body so I can get rid of the Lo Pro Edge FR and put in something else that isnt a Floyd Rose because I hate them. Can't/wont sell the guitar either as it has real sentimental value to me.
    Theoretically I probably could, one would think.

    I'd rather a block of maple or Australian Buloke than mahogany. Really need a tough piece of wood at the bridge pivots. Otherwise, great work. Although you could have made use of one of those little Dremel plunge router bases from StewMac to get the job done a little quicker it's good to see somebody with chisel chops.

      I don't believe it is common, but I'm not all too familiar with the electric guitar world. I deal almost exclusively with acoustic guitars so this was a bit outside my usual wheelhouse.

  • @rodolfoamaralguitar
    @rodolfoamaralguitar Рік тому

    Why does it happen? I think because some people remove the strings than the bridge forces the studs outside. If the tremolo is perfectly balanced it will not cause any tension to the wood I think.

    • @maxmustardman298

      bc how a normal strat is routed on the top, and especially if theres a humbucker in the bridge. Little wood to support the posts toward the pickup and electronics cavity.

    I have a 1993 Ibanez Ex, my first guitar that has been my baby until an almost similar thing happened. How much does a job like that cost. I found a similar body that I was thinking of buying and just swapping the parts over, but I have some stickers on that guitar that I love and give my guitar character and the body is really light. So I would rather repair it if possible.

    How much wood is left between threaded insert and the pickup cavity, at the thinnest point? Hard to tell, but looks like maybe only 1/8"? You may not remember now, since this was a while ago. I'm about to install some threaded inserts and I'm a bit concerned there won't be enough wood to support the tension. Anyway, great job on the repair. Thanks for the video.
