This is actually a great idea for a video. For anyone new trying to choose a main, I'd highly recommend watching the "Are you a Marth main" video after this just to seethe difference. I'm not trying to tell you who to main, but the vast majority of people would much rather be playing a mid/high tier, simply because their much wider variety of good options mean you can develop your own playstyle to a far greater degree with them, which most people find a lot more fun. With low tier like Roy however, you are forced to commit to certain options all the time if you don't wanna get destroyed by anyone who even remotely knows the matchup.
@@supaboy339 And now you have Roy in Ultimate. Side-B that potentially kills at 50%, jab to back-air confirm killing at 80%. He’s hot fire and finally better than Marth in a smash game.
Wow. As an avid Roy main since the game came out in 2001, it shocked me how accurate this video is. It's 100% accurate even down to the "Roy is for you if." I'm sure any other Roy player could tell you, one of, if not his main appeal is his incredible mobility and agility. Even if you're really good with Roy and understand him well like I consider myself to, he's an extremely mentally exhausting character to use consecutively (i.e. in a tournament setting especially) because you have to rely so much on not getting hit and focus intensely on setting up the K.O. with the handful of killing moves he has. Roy is all offense and zero defense, so you have to come at your opponent like you mean it to win. Matches against floatier characters (like Peach, Samus, Marth, and Jigglypuff, all in abundance at tournaments) can last a really long time and drain your mental stamina. He also requires you to be good at predicting your opponent. Ultimately, when all is said and done, Roy is all about getting that forward smash. That hilted forward smash when it connects is crushing and extremely satisfying. It has a nice weighty feel to it.. it has a lovely crunching slash sound effect.. it's dangerous when used near the edge.. it's double satisfying when you K.O. Marth with it.. that's the shit right there, any Roy player will tell you.
That's just because he sucks in his own game as well. Maybe the were just trying to accurately capture how much better of a character Marth and Ike are. In which case, they did a good job.
Roy is just a worse version of his own dad. Eliwood has better growths, better bases, promotes earlier in his story, gains a mount upon promoting and gains proficiency with spears upon promoting. On top of that Eliwood has Hector to bounce off of, a perfect foil which makes his otherwise rather weak character appear so much more appealing, while Roy's companions do not provide the same level of characterization for him.
Shoutouts to all the Roy mains out there. I'm Colorado's Roy and all I have to say is...this character is very fun to play but if you actually care about winning don't pick him or, in fact even look his way. He's bad, but for me playing him for 10+ years and any chance of winning with him becoming an afterthought (You'll have to accept it sooner or later as a Roy player if you haven't already dropped his ass at this point for someone else that's a lot better and isn't holding you back with glaring issues and matchup problems, I mean you have Peach, Fox, Falco, Marth.. hell Doc, Falcon I mean seriously Roy? Lol don't trust gingers, oh I seem to be getting off topic...) a few great things like getting the crowd hype and styling become your main priorities.
Gonna give you the same comment I gave another guy. Wanna know how to make Roy viable at the top? Git gud. Use his strengths in ways that compliment his weaknesses. Roy has good grab game but terrible attack range? Guess what: his down throw doesn't send opponents very far and has a lot of "frozen frames" (frames where the opponent is rendered immobile after being attacked), allowing for easy follow-up damage. Abuse the shit out of this at low percentages and don't let their feet touch the ground after 60%. Tipper doesn't matter until you go in for the kill at about 70-120%. Until then just hit them wherever and make sure they don't touch the stage. Keep your feet on the ground and beat on them so they can't get an inch in. Bad recovery? Air dodge as you get hit to slow your momentum off-stage and DED your way back. This serves as both a recovery as well as bait. If your opponent takes this bait and moves in to punish you back off stage, hit them with a partially charged Flare Blade/Dolphin Slash combo as they approach. FB sends them back enough for you to recover rather easily and DS recovers any lost altitude. You're more than likely to get back on the stage with little issue and at little risk to yourself, assuming you don't royally fuck up the timing. If you're on a stage with platforms, use Roy's capacity for annoyance to your advantage. He's a speedy fucker with some decent ground-to-air moves. Stay low and punish the enemy from below. The tip may not to much damage, but it stuns them and does just enough damage to be annoying, and that's what you want. Soon as they get sick of your shit and come down, Ftilt+2hitDED+Dtilt+3hitDED+Ftilt+short FB+short FB+Ftilt+DS=Goooooodbyeee!!! If they survive, edge guard with Flare Blade until they learn to stay down. This will work on most fast fallers and some floaters. Spam Up Smash. Marth and Roy's Up smashes have multiple hits, one for each part of the sword. On top of this, it's got a sort of vacuum effect where it sucks an opponent closer to the attack if they're within a certain space away from you due to the weird hitboxes this game has. This makes it really easy to get tipper'd hits for good damage, as well as keeping opponents up in the air and not attacking you. If you do this the whole match, you can KO them with up smash alone with some clever abuse of that vacuum effect after 130%-ish. In other words, be way more aggressive than you would playing any other character. Roy may be very similar to Marth when it comes to their physics and movesets, but their playstyles are nowhere near the same. Marth is all about spacing and hitbox manipulation where as Roy is all offense all the time. If you're not 3 inches away from your opponent's face at all times, pressuring them and never letting up, you're playing him wrong. And, I can't stress this enough: If you play Roy, STAY ON THE GROUND!!!
+SSBM Tutorials I rewatched and heard it mentioned twice. I thought that Roy's down tilt was better than Marth's so I thought it would be brought up as a main point. I guess this video wasn't very serious though.
So I've been labbing Roy for about 10 minutes and I found that forward throw double edge blade jab reset works on a CPU Watch out Mango, I'm going to grab you and then I'm going to hope you don't tech and then I'm going to win the tournament
Smash Wiki said Roy comes upon one of the worst 5 characters in Smash 4. Stays in the same FG server meeting up with 16 different players and only loses two matches.
I don't think Smash 4 Roy is as bad as Melee Roy, but he's still pretty bad. Pretty much the only thing that got meaningfully improved is his killing power, but even then he doesn't have any safe kill setups that I'm aware of. He's pretty much the epitome of high risk, high reward. Unfortunately that's not a viable play style against smart opponents who don't make mistakes often.
+Eli M You are right. It's hard for me to believe that Roy comes upon one of the 5 worst in Sm4sh. His speed is flawless and is really powerful. The big thing people like to point out about him see his recovery options. He only has his up special as a recovery and it does not grant much distance. He's a very risky character as well. But even if, he does look like a REALLY great character when mastered. You have to know much more about Roy than I do.
Roy is your boy if : ~ You like playing with swordsmen but don't want to be expected to place at tournaments. ~ Your biggest gripe with Gamecube controllers is that the C-stick pops out from overuse ~ You like every move in your character's arsenal to be punishable. ~ You enjoy the feeling of your moves being crouch-cancelled.
Roy vs. Samus Matchup Guide Samus is only difficult if you don't know the matchup. Approaching is not a problem. You have a sword and Samus doesn't. Use your superior range to out-space her reckless down smashes. If you're the one that's going to be approaching, wavedash down tilt is really good because it can poke her and send her at angels for combos. Once the Samus realizes that they have to play super campy and gay against Roy, be prepared. All Samus does is shoot missiles @ you, and it's stupid because you can't reflect them. But you can eat through them with forward tilt, so they really shouldn't give you any trouble. To avoid charge shots, you can either powershield them or eat through them with forward smash. I recommend the forward smash option because it's the easiest. This is how you should play the neutral. Comboing Samus is easy peasy lemon squeezy. I have found great success with a particular combo, the old one two. Down tilt, up air, forward smash is guaranteed to take stocks at nearly any percent. But this combo can be difficult to pull off if the Samus is playing gay with her missels. If she is missle camping, you can the best solution is to play really safe. It doesn't really matter that you can't land your KO moves if you play this way. Get one hit at a time and then once the Samus is at 200% (250% on Dream Land), just use an up throw to KO her and boom, stock is over with. Easy as frick. The off stage game with Samus is arguably the easiest part of the matchup. She doesn't really have any ways to edgeguard you because, well, you have your up b move, known to us Roy mains as the "heeyah". The heeyah makes Samus look silly as she tries to edgeguard you from the stage. When it comes to edgeguarding her, you have 3 really good options that I've found particular success with. The first one is to charge the b move that kills people when it's charged up enough. You sit there at the ledge, and when she gets close, HIYAHHH!! (that's what Roy says when he lets go of the b move) Second one is to jump out there and use the down aerial move. It is effective because it sends Samus straight down to where she can't recover. Third one is kind of a yolo one. You get on stage, taunt, and wait for her to come back. Then when she gets back, she will eat a forward smash to the face! Talk about disrespect! Overall, I think the matchup is 60-40 in Roy's favor. Samus can do a couple gay things, but Roy ultimately has the competitive edge. It is also good to break Samus's shield.
I know this is very trivial but, in the section when you discuss Roy's survivability and give him a 2/5 (I think) and tested it with Shiek forward airing three characters, the move gets stale correct? Doesn't that mean that Roy lives a bit longer then? I know its very small but I thought it was worth pointing out.
I main Roy. I've trained with him. Some of the things in this video were absolutely not true, and any main Roy can definitely tell you that. If you have trained enough and know enough about Roy, then you know that he has potential.
I guess the main of the best player in the world, the 5th best character in the game will continue to be ignored for the sake of MH likes and promotion. I thought this was a real channel not click bait.
LSDX has actually wrecked my Sheik a few times. I think I scared him pretty bad with our last set though. I never realized how powerful platforms were against Roy!
I love Roy. I know he's not the best, but that's no reason to dissuade people from using him- I guess I don't like the people that only play characters because they're 'good' as opposed to it being because they like the character. The one thing they did to make him better in SSB4 however, it they made his up smash so much better, and you can use it right out of a dash .
I main Marth but from time to time, I like playing as Roy because like you said, I think his moveset is fun. To be honest, I find it easier to land the first hit of the falling nair with him than Marth. And I can land most of his dancing blade too. But I just don't like how his second hop is so short.
Could you make a video on the Marth vs. Captain Falcon matchup? I don't understand how Falcon wins the matchup, even though everyone says he does. It'd also be helpful for tips on how to win the matchup as Falcon, because my Falcon is garbage against Marth.
At the last 2 tournaments at my school, both times I had to play a Dr. Mario and a Roy and both times I 4 stocked both of them. Respect to anyone who seriously competes with Roy.
Great video for explaining why low-tier really is low-tier. I come to this channel to get better at smash, and you've demonstrated effectively that Roy is the wrong choice to do so. People in the comments be hatin', but that's just people not willing to accept the truth that their favorite meme character is stale and poor-performing. Any chance on doing a video on tech-chasing in the future? You've done a couple of videos on tech-chasing specific matchups (Shiek vs. Fastfallers, etc.), but I feel like a broader, more generalized description of what tech-chasing means in the context of the meta would be greatly appreciated for people (like me) still trying to understand how it all fits together. Keep up the great work, Kira!
As a kid growing up with melee, Roy was always my character while my brother played Marth. For years of us playing each other and pretty much nobody else, our meta evolved into "Rock paper scissors: Attack, grab, counter". Our main strategy was to jump at the other person and counter. Now, I main Marth but have a pocket Roy if someone isn't quite good enough for my Marth.
+PlasmaLink I remembered playing Marth a while and did pretty well. And then my friend recommended me to try Roy, because why not, they are quite similar. And I could instantly feel how he seemed to clunky, slow and just bad, and I was doing way worse with him that Marth. Really sad Roy is so bad in Melee, but at least he's good in PM.
***** Super smash bros melee: Less characters Older graphics High tiers pretty much dominate the ENTIRE cast (fox, falco, marth,Shiek) Less mechanics Harder learning curve Project m : New characters New mechanics New abilities You can play ANY character at a competitive level and still win tournaments (Versatility) New stages Easier learning curve Balanced movesets New game modes Various Improvements and still incredibly fast paced just like super smash bros melee What's your definition of inferior again ? Try using Roy in melee let's see if you get anywhere
+JayBird Less characters but they have more depth and are far more challenging. the graphics are still great. If PM was had a developed metagame like Melee, it'd have it's own hierarchy too. ... less mechanics? *The fuck*. .... I mean, a harder learning curve that scares away the casuals. K. PM; New characters... but most get dumped anyways. New mechanics... I mean, last time I saw a DACUS I swear... New abilities... what? .... and you can be a very skilled Roy and win tourneys. Honey, last time fucking Bowser won something in PM... this whole "PM is just so balanced" is bullshit, there will still be dominance by a specific group of characters. New stages... yay? I mean... Easier learning curve=casual time bruh. Balanced movesets? Still not balanced tho. New game modes. Speaking of casual play, *give me adventure mode back*. Improvements that lead to a less popular game for competitive fighters. Unlike Melee, the speed isn't as mesmerizing because people who play the game for a week can travel at super speeds, while in Melee, different story. Definition of inferior = PM. Try playing Bowser and go places.

Roy blows huge ass in melee but I basically can't stop playing as him
#RoyIsLowerMidTier
It's because you do so well in PM teh PH1RE has got you
I don't know wether to be flattered or offended
All I gotta say is never give up on your main bros! I mained Roy since melee now he's top-tier
Also PM Roy is glorious
That's the ONLY good version of Roy ....who is also my boy
@@supaboy339 And now you have Roy in Ultimate. Side-B that potentially kills at 50%, jab to back-air confirm killing at 80%. He’s hot fire and finally better than Marth in a smash game.
@@supaboy339 Roy Ultimate: Hold my beer
-Love the Fire Emblem series
Roy isn't even that much of a liked character in Fire Embkem. His popularity is mostly because of smash alone
That's just because he sucks in his own game as well.
Maybe the were just trying to accurately capture how much better of a character Marth and Ike are.
In which case, they did a good job.
+Pokemon Special Y the last statement should've been "If you believe that a skilled Roy can beat any Fox!"
Marsupial Mole and Eliwoods still pretty bad lol
And then there's project m roy...
And there's Ultimate Roy
Roy would have been such an amazing character to watch if he was good
Wow Mango and Hbox actually had a respectful exchange between eachother? It warms my heart to see.
+True Roman¢e Question as Roy, Is he much like lucina in the fact that the tip of sword doesn't matter or is he like Marth in that perspective?
+Link2000Thor More like Lucina in that regard. The tip of his sword has no knockback and you almost always get punished for it
Gonna give you the same comment I gave another guy.
But Roy told me he sucks
RomanceHD Roy's still our boy 😢
You made this whole video without mentioning that "Roy's our boy!"
You forgot to say that Roy has the PH1R3
"Do you like losing? Congratulations you're probably a Roy player!"
Lol Damn.
They want to be diffeeent than others picking low tiers
How can you make a Roy video without mentioning his down tilt. It's probably his best combo move
+TurbinationE How could you watch this video and not hear the word down tilt. I probably mentioned it like 5 different times
... He mentions it a lot?
+SSBM Tutorials I rewatched and heard it mentioned twice.
I thought that Roy's down tilt was better than Marth's so I thought it would be brought up as a main point.
I guess this video wasn't very serious though.
+SSBM Tutorials lol nope
+TurbinationE Lmao he's making a video on a joke of a character. The fact that you care shows how much of an idiot you are.
So I've been labbing Roy for about 10 minutes and I found that forward throw double edge blade jab reset works on a CPU
Watch out Mango, I'm going to grab you and then I'm going to hope you don't tech and then I'm going to win the tournament
if you like roy go play PM
Or sm4sh
+MinMinForTheWin atleast he's better in Sm4sh 4 than Melee
+Guilherme Girola
At least PM resembles Melee?
Nee het is steen idk?
Or Melee
Smash Wiki said Roy comes upon one of the worst 5 characters in Smash 4.
Stays in the same FG server meeting up with 16 different players and only loses two matches.
You will not find the best competition on for glory lol
You're right. Lol 😅
+Eli M
You are right.
+Steven Cervantes lol his recovery has a first frame invincibility
i didnt know today was april 1st
Roy is your boy if :
~ You like playing with swordsmen but don't want to be expected to place at tournaments.
~ Your biggest gripe with Gamecube controllers is that the C-stick pops out from overuse
~ You like every move in your character's arsenal to be punishable.
~ You enjoy the feeling of your moves being crouch-cancelled.
DontTestMe's roy could beat anyone
Roy vs. Samus Matchup Guide
Samus is only difficult if you don't know the matchup.
(that's what Roy says when he lets go of the b move)
Second one is to jump out there and use the down aerial move.
I think saying Narcissa Wright is a famous Roy player might be stretching it.
"Narcissa" is a very famous OOT speedrunner
+Andrew Ricklefs I know she/he is. I'm saying she's not famous for playing Roy.
I know.
well there's a couple vids of Cosmo out there so that's pretty famous for a roy player.
***** "for a Roy player"? Shut up, Sethlon and Neo are way more famous than "a couple of videos"
His down tilt, dash dance, up throw, and fsmash is pretty good.
+Felix Irvine He mentioned that in the video
Xavi I know he did. I just wanted to point it out.
Can you do one for doc/mario?
3:34 zain saw this and laughed
I know this is very trivial but, in the section when you discuss Roy's survivability and give him a 2/5 (I think) and tested it with Shiek forward airing three characters, the move gets stale correct? Doesn't that mean that Roy lives a bit longer then? I know its very small but I thought it was worth pointing out.
As a Marth main, this makes me want to pick up Roy as a secondary.
I main Roy. I've trained with him. Some of the things in this video were absolutely not true, and any main Roy can definitely tell you that. If you have trained enough and know enough about Roy, then you know that he has potential.
He doesn't idiot
Just let it go
Roy sux lol
@@IAm-zo1bo he has potential depending on the player, if you suck with him then he will suck.
@@NintenJoe true
but he's still a boy i main :P
Hey you didn't mention that Roy upsmash can spike anyone at low % near ledge and kill them, it's the best move in the game!
I can't believe you chose Roy over Peach. Didn't Peach win the last poll?
Relax McBoogerballs. I do what I want.
Peach fans have been waiting almost a year and she's actually a played character. =[
+Fuckface mcboogerballs Also Puff won the last poll, which we did
I guess the main of the best player in the world, the 5th best character in the game will continue to be ignored for the sake of MH likes and promotion. I thought this was a real channel not click bait.
+SSBM Tutorials thug
Great mod demonstration. Glad to know Roy actually has hit boxes now.
Finally it came out. been wanting to main Roy and get his metagame up.
+MrDanjg4 god's speed friend
LSDX has actually wrecked my Sheik a few times. I think I scared him pretty bad with our last set though.
I never realized how powerful platforms were against Roy!
YES I AM A ROY PLAYER, LOW TIER OR NOT HE IS MY BOY!
4 years later, are you still a roy player?
Kira: Dash Dance is the most powerful tool for pretty much any character in neutral
Luigi: Am I a joke to you?
But what if I'm a Luigi main? BibleThump
A skilled Roy may not be able to beat ANY Fox, but he can beat an unskilled Fox.
Yeah
I love Roy
I main Marth but from time to time, I like playing as Roy because like you said, I think his moveset is fun. To be honest, I find it easier to land the first hit of the falling nair with him than Marth. And I can land most of his dancing blade too. But I just don't like how his second hop is so short.
Wow, great video! Made me laugh which briefly let me forget the fact I'm a Roy main.
You're not alone :(
I've got a tip though if you want it.
unfortunately a tip from a roy main doesn't do much :(
warvad Even if it was to have an opportunity to potentially combo floaties?
+Mrhellslayerz
I can see where this is going and it has something to do with a different position on some sort of 'tier list'
Nee het is steen Actually it has nothing to do with the tier list. It's actually about weight classes.
in the "Famous Roy Players" section you forgot about Don't Test Me
i really wish that roy was good
Could you make a video on the Marth vs. Captain Falcon matchup? I don't understand how Falcon wins the matchup, even though everyone says he does. It'd also be helpful for tips on how to win the matchup as Falcon, because my Falcon is garbage against Marth.
Zain is it the prophesy
Now that you've done Roy, give the Middle Tier some love!
Are you a Mario player next!
*****
I wouldn't mind a Samus vid, that'd be nice.
Man... Was i the only one hyped for the Are You A Peach Player video ;_;
3:54 Flare Blitz attacks?
1. Select Roy
2. Unselect Roy
3. Choose Marth
4. Play as Marth
5. Win as Marth
Jay The Villager You sir, deserve a cookie
Soft Chocolate Chip pls
Does this work with other characters? Sorry I'm new and don't know my combos very well......
Well, one way to find out.
Just purchased the falcon box thanks
At the last 2 tournaments at my school, both times I had to play a Dr. Mario and a Roy and both times I 4 stocked both of them. Respect to anyone who seriously competes with Roy.
Do you like playing with a wet noodle?
*n o o d l e s w o r d*
The first 16-17 seconds were surprisingly accurate. Roy was the shit when I was a kid.
Can you do this for Donkey Kong next please!!!
When is Are you a Pichu player coming out?
or just play PM roy.
Playing PM roy is the only way you can waste your time more than playing melee roy.
PM Roy is the only reason I play that game. I would kill for him to be that good in smash 4
better yes but he's still near bottom tier.
+Narros Jefferson Roy's mid-low at worst in Smash 4.
have you seen esam tier list he's pretty far down their.
Can I just say I like the "Road Taken" music a lot and I always use it in my castle in Fates
Are you a Yoshi Player? Because I'm not. Can't be an Amsa
People don't like this video as it's supposed to be informative and helpful, he just said he sucks over and over pretty much.
How can you say Roy has the worst recovery in the game when Ness exists?
he said among the worst meaning its just as bad
Bowser
Did I catch some fire emblem: fates tunes in the background?
Watching this after Zain destroyed everyone lol
Yep!
I really appreciate Smash 4 for making him decent and Ultimate for actually making him even better and high tier.
Zain: hold my beer
Jaja yep
Ive owned this game since 2005 and ive used Roy like twice.
Still my main.
Haha that picture of Cameron in maybe you
A skilled Roy can beat any Kirby or Pichu
"Roy is fucking trash." -Official 2015 PAL tier list, character description and explanation for his spot on the list.
HE'S OUR BOY
+Brian McGuire indeed he is
In case the chart was too big in "character usages of the melee games" i can clearly see roy in between ness & mario
Roy is your main if you don t want to win
Really sad Roy is so bad in Melee, but at least he's good in PM.
or just play project m Roy ..cuz let's be honest here your not getting anywhere with melee Roy
you would probably get further in a game that's not dead
+Alonzo “Chilled” Flames lmao pm is having a circiut going on rn

Super smash bros melee:
Less characters
Older graphics
High tiers pretty much dominate the ENTIRE cast (fox, falco, marth,Shiek)
Less mechanics
Harder learning curve
Project m :
New characters
New mechanics
New abilities
You can play ANY character at a competitive level and still win tournaments (Versatility)
New stages
Easier learning curve
Balanced movesets
New game modes
Various Improvements
and still incredibly fast paced just like super smash bros melee
What's your definition of inferior again ?
Try using Roy in melee let's see if you get anywhere
+JayBird
Less characters but they have more depth and are far more challenging.
the graphics are still great.
If PM was had a developed metagame like Melee, it'd have it's own hierarchy too.
... less mechanics? *The fuck*.
.... I mean, a harder learning curve that scares away the casuals. K.
PM;
New characters... but most get dumped anyways.
0:34 serioulsy ? theres more falco and marth user than fox??
TheBeggies95 in the melee games... yes.
wow its kind of surprising
TheBeggies95 I mean kind of? Fox destroys your hands and is crazy hard to use
And there is less Mewtwo mains than Bowser and Kirby?
