My 11 year old budgie has never allowed me to pet his head, but he is completely fine with me petting his back, wings, tail, or belly. He loses his mind when I try to touch his face and bites a piece of meat out of my finger. Conclusion: birds have personalities and they are not all the same.
Petting those areas can make your bird want to mate with you, thats the same with all budgies. Considering you’ve had him for 11 years, I know you atleast take good care of him
You can train your bird to accept touching the 'no-no' spots without triggering them aka exploratory touching. Sometimes you have to check for physical abnormalities, or help with grooming if your little one is sick or old. Look up towel training if anyone's curious.
@@RubberQ sometimes you have too. one of my birbs has a fat lumb on his chest. harmless but i sometimes have to touch it to see if it changed like hardened up or got bigger.
my bird likes belly rubs, she sometimes gets too lazy to step up from one finger to the other, so i just stroke her belly and now she does this all the time sometimes she'll let me stroke her neck (but this is super rare) and when it does happen i am slow and careful and only use on finger and don't go near her face incase i accidentally poke her edit: she doesn't do this all the time, just sometimes
@@Lucifer-do7mfone of mine had a cyst on the side of her stomach and on her back. My older sister had to monitor them to make sure they don’t get bigger. She passed away after the surgery of removing one.
Personal experience: You can pet budgies rather easily when they're young and you're raising them anyways. However, after they're ~1 year old, they sorta grow out of it. And this has nothing to do with you doing a bad job or having messed smth up. They just mature and look for a mate at that time that isn't a human being (which is healthy). Especially with males you see more 'aggressive' behavior when mating hormones are high (to win the ladies). I've had this with pretty much all my budgies so far. I should say I've had one very old budgie which got back into petting after he had damaged a claw and needed more care 🤔 It's also only petting, they still like to sit on me, preen themselves, get fed, even sleep there, ... as usual, just not the beak petting anymore 😞
I have a male budgie, and few weeks ago he would tolerate pets around his head and beak. Now everytime I get my finger NEAR his head he bites the heck out of my finger. Sometimes even when I take my hand back he'll jump on it and murder my finger. One time he held such a strong grip on my nail that I was able to lift my hand with him dangling on 😂 Now I know, my boi wants a wifey. He lost his friend just 2 weeks ago ( another male budgie ) because of an illness. Now my blue baby is turning 1 on 17th December and I am still convincing my family to let me get another budgie, preferably a female which I can tame now that I am more informed about them. Thank you for clarifying!
That sounds a lot like what I experienced yeah 👍 For me it was more 'threatening' my finger than actually attacking it though 😂 But yeah this happens when hormones are high, losing a mate could be a boost to that 🤔 I hope you can get your family convinced, they're so much happier together, even same gender 👍😊
If your bird really trusts you then they will let you pet them wherever you want. For some reason my budgie only lets me pet every part of his body but for everybody else he only lets them pet his stomach.🤔🤔🤔
Oh my gosh- I've been petting my birds wrong!! :( I thought petting it on the chest was ok? My birds are fine but sometimes my female bird looks at my finger while petting her on the chest. But my male bird doesn't and fluffs up. So I'm confused can someone explain it to me why petting it on the chest is bad?
My birds just doesn't perch my finger, a few months ago i bought a white budgie and he used to perch my finger but suddenly he stopped doing it. They come close to me only when i am holding a treat. It's been almost 3 months with my 2 old budgies and they are still afraid of me even tho i did everything mentioned in your video, idk what to do 😔
Idk if u own cockatiels but Pls get back to I have had my pet birds since I was 9 I know like everything at least I thought I had gotten a cockatiel and I thought it was a male it’s actually a female and idk what to do it has no other mate in the cage I mean I have 3 parakeets but they can’t mate it’s impossible my question is how do I stop her from laying eggs I have tried everything she has laid 7 and idk what to do nothing is working I already made sure if they were fertil wich they are not but it’s been about 2 /3 weeks and I have reached out to many UA-camrs about could u pls respond.!
I have to go on a trip for a week. I have someone to clean feed and all that stuff for my budgie. But he probably won’t let him out of his cage, is this ok for a week?
Yes but after you get back let them out asap bc if you don’t, they may become flightless because their wing muscles haven’t been properly used in a while
No no no! Don’t clip their wings unless for protection (eg: no tail, health issues) a bird may not trust you after that and grow to hate you, but don’t worry! You can watch some videos on how to regain a birds trust after clipping their wings 🪽
I've kept my youngest bird's wings trimmed since he grew flight feathers. But I only did the first 5 flight feathers. My goal wasn't to take flying away from him. But to prevent him getting up to the ceiling fan. He's a perfectly happy little guy. He loves cheek pets. And he loves playing. He's never been a nervous one. But I have had him since he was an egg. Wing trims have been normal to him his whole life. And it doesn't ruffle him up. He can still fly. And he can get around his cage easily. He just can't get to the highest spots in the house.
I have a budgie and for some reason it only allows me to pet it on its chest. I've tried petting its head but it doesnt seem comfortable when i try to. (i got it about 2 weeks ago and its sometimes okay with me using my finger as a perch for it)
My bird Cignis doesn't mind me petting him wherever. But I can tell that he's really into it when I give him cheek pets. So that's what I tend to stick to. Sometimes he will even regurgitate at my finger when I give him cheek pets. And then he eats what he just regurgitated. Because he's ny fat baby. (He's not actually fat. But his personality is fat baby.)
Help.my Budgie stays on my finger for 2 second, that's why its been 1 month i still fear to take him out from his cage, any tip to tame it without millet?
What a load of BS ! Who appointed this fool as an expert on birds ?? I don't profess to be an expert but having bred and handled budgies for over 50 years, I can confidently state that these affectionate, social animals love human contact ! But like any other animal there are some that don't like being touched in certain places. (I don't like being touched behind the ears)
Yeah tell that to my parakeet John Munch. He's nipped me every time I pet his cheeks. The only place he lets me pet him are his chest and feet. I do get boops though every night before he goes to sleep :3

Late answer but I think it’s because that’s where they mate, like how one kinda sits on the other with their chest to their back
strange, pinky never bite or tried to get away when i pet her on the chest. is that also bad for hormons? (i rarely do it though)
My bird in the past let me pet him but now he just go away 😢

Try changing diet, I think higher protein diets will induce egg laying

My cockteils when I opened the cage on accident they went all over the home but when i put them on my finger they went straight back to their cage
Put seeds in one hand and put ur finger infront this will train him to stay longer on ur finger
