Friday Night Funkin’ is an open-source rhythm game released on Newgrounds in 2020. The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin’ Crew Inc., which consists of Cameron “ninjamuffin99” Taylor, David “PhantomArcade” Brown, Isaac “Kawai Sprite” Garcia, and evilsk8r. It shares gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution, PaRappa the Rapper, and the “Dance Contest” minigame from Club Penguin, while borrowing aesthetic influences from Flash games.
In the game, you control a character named Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of opponents in singing and rapping contests to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. The gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health during each song. The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam and has since gained popularity. An expanded demo was released, and a full version titled Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game is currently in development1.
Here’s how the game works:
You play as Boyfriend, aiming to win over Girlfriend by defeating opponents.
Each level (referred to as “weeks”) contains three songs.
The opponent sings a pattern of notes (represented as arrows), and you must mirror it using arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys.
The game offers different difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard.
As the difficulty increases, the speed of incoming arrows and complexity of patterns also increase.

A cacophony of discordant notes, a sonic assault on the auditory senses. Its melody, a labyrinthine maze of tonal dissonance, devoid of harmonic coherence. The rhythm, a frantic, erratic dance of beats, devoid of any discernible pattern or pulse. Its lyrics, if indeed they can be called such, a meaningless string of syllables, devoid of substance or meaning. Truly, it is a testament to the depths of musical ineptitude, a blight upon the landscape of auditory art.
