Good job on putting together a very helpful video! I've had several cammed SB 400's over the years and never had a problem with any of them. One of my favorites was a truck I used to haul my camper and horse trailer in the mountains of Colorado. Never over heated and pulled great. I'm glad people don't know about this engine or think it had problems. Up north we have to use antifreeze, so no rust problems.

Keeping the coolant changed really helps those with cooling due to the steam holes not being able to get blocked.

The 400 SBC: "An engine not too many people have heard of." 😂😂 Maybe in YOUR age bracket, kid. If someone born in the 50s, 60s, or 70s isn't aware of the 400, he's simply not a car guy. An American-car guy, at least.

Facts my man when I was younger In the late 80s and early 90s I would spend every Saturday pulling 400 small blocks out of old trucks and impalas. I still have several blocks til this day.

I own 2 of the 1970 400ci engines, both 4-bolt mains. One in a drag car with 580hp, the other rebuilt and ready to go, both 406ci now. I'm 64 years old. lol

Yeah I did double take when he said the 400 wasn't that well-known. 327 guy but I never have had a 400 small block. I think it's about a 1970 Chevy pickup in my bin 71 or two I just don't remember anymore. The whole pick up souffre 150 dollars and the engine was reasonably fresh. Get this Chevy Cheyenne and it at all the options and 90% rust free. The pictures he took. My son was fourteen and he had won the bid on the 57 Chevy sitting next to it and he said I told you they had you should have bet on that. He was right but I really want to drive all the way out to know where Kansas a second time a second vehicle and that was reason I did not bid. What it's worth

A caveat for the beginners: the Vortec 350 and 454 will both require an electric fuel pump, since there is no provision n the blocks for the mechanical ones. Oh, and the TRUE "Big block LS" would be the oddball 8.1, the only Gen7 big block, and the only one with LS-style heads.

All the TBI motors I have dealt with (they are super cheap) mainly for the block, are machined and ready for factory roller cams. problem is by the time you buy the lifters, holder, thrust plate, and added cost for the proper timing chain your better off buy a retro roller set up.
Any case, looking for a cheap block that can handle 400 horse, tbi are great for that.

Love the video, and by no means am I trying to be a dick but the vortec 350 was not the first roller motor sbc. Corvettes in the late 80s as well as canaros did. I know for a certainty because I shockingly got a factory roller 350 from a late 80s camaro about 15 years ago. Also the 400s overheated because of the siamese cylinders and because the bore was so big for the block dimensionally that the walls were thin. Again, no hate just adding some info bud

well tomorrow air and fuel you can get in the cylinder the bigger bang you can get so have an open port heads open chamber heads and a lower compression and run a nitrous oxide you're going to make more horsepower than a car or an engine that has 15 to one compression in the cylinders and using nitrous

The 400 Chevy has a shorter connecting rod of 5.565" compared to a 350 Chevy's connecting rod of 5.7". Some LS engines also use a rod length of 6.098 inch. While a 383 uses a 400 crank it does not retain the 400's shorter rods. Every 383 that I've seen had a rod length of 5.7" or 6.0". The longer rods increase piston dwell time (The time the piston stays at the top of the cylinder), as well as a longer rod suffers from less piston and ring side loading that causes premature wear on the piston and cylinder. 400 Chevy also has steam hole passages for cooling due to the Siamese bore that can get gunked up, corroded, rusted, or just plain blocked up. The cylinder heads must also be modified for these steam hole passages. That's why in my opinion 400's are not overly popular.

Back before 383s were a thing guys used 400 5.56 rods and crank and stock 350 compression height pistons to make a 383

Well around here you're never going to find a 400, haven't seen one in years. You can find plenty of pre 86 350's, and the occasional 454. I don't pay attention to any of the newer motors, so no comment on that.

    • @RatMaro

Definitely would of had to of been swapped at some point. That would drastically decrease compression and take a significant impact in flow as well. I'd try and switch those out if you have the ability to. Any closed chamber bbc head will help wake it up significantly.

the only thing I can find out that's wrong with an LS motor it's not really the motor's fault
if you swap and LS into something and you don't use the radiator that came out of that LS vehicle well that holes you're sending to the overflow bottle from the motor needs to be restricted down to 5/16 that half inch holes I made a brass plug to go inside and now I have tremendous amounts of heat
coming out of my 6.7 lq4 you're saying Chevy never made a 6.7 lq4 no but Scott did boarded .03 stroked at the floor is mild mild cam 2001 Chevy suburban with 361 ft pounds of torque to the ground
that's enough for pulling a car trailer

  • @bigredracer7848

400 has a heating issue them holes in the black going into the cylinder head sometimes plug with rust and other debris that's in the motor due to time and it causes hot cylinders bad for the head gaskets bad for the heads and certainly bad for the piston rings
