On the topic of "Reaction speed"
I feel like a lot of people use the raw reaction speed of like... How quickly can your human brain recognize that SOMETHING has changed. Not something specific, but just like A THING.
There's definitely the issue of built in latency the games might have, but what about the latency of a move potentially being subtle for a few frames before later becoming much more obvious? If a move has a 20 frame start up but the first 6 frames are nearly identical to the animation of them just standing still or walking forward or something else, is it really a 20 frame move?
Not to mention you have to process what is happening. It's like how Broly's command grab and 5H would sometimes get confused for each other, and you can't block in the jump start up so you'd potentially get hit by 5H if your brain thought he was going for the grab. It's not a "Broly moved his arm so time to jump" type of reaction, you gotta process *HOW* the man moved his arm and which arm he's moving.

Honestly, Broly grab works for this but not for the reason you explained. Broly's arm lift during his grab goes almost vertically to the point of touching the health bar, whilst Broly's 5H just has him rear his elbow diagonally upwards slightly, so they wouldn't be difficult to tell apart if they were both reactable. However, the arm lift is only 4 frames into the animation of the grab so it's effectively a 13 frame reactable grab.
Some characters have feints as part of their moveset to prey on exactly that.

Right sorry this was what I was alluding to I just think I worded it poorly.
My point is what you’re saying: you’re not just looking and reacting to “Broly move arm” you’re looking for HOW he moves the arm, and it takes longer for your brain to process that information.
The animation isn’t as similar as other things, and my example of Broly after talking about moves that look identical to normal animations is definitely a mistake.
But my point was that, by the time your brain can determine that Broly moved his arm, it’s too late for you to necessarily decipher WHICH arm move he’s doing.
It’s not just like the reaction tests where Broly no arm move means no click, Broly arm move you click as fast as possible. You gotta figure out if you need to left click or right click based on which arm he’s moving and how he’s moving it.
Spot on. This was the issue with Nash in Vanilla Street Fighter V. For most of his dash animation he was idle, THEN he rushed forward with incredible speed during the latter part. In a strike throw mix situation, he was extremely deadly.

I think it's a delicate touch that despite the gameplay redesigns, characters still retain one major part of their identity:
- Baiken still gets to say "No" to certain forms of blockstrings and blow people up for trying.
- Testament still gets lockdown in the corner and bullies the shit out of opponents.
Their movesets are heavily different in Strive, yet nonetheless, these core traits of their gameplan survived in a new form.
Forget about that 😍 Testament's visual redesign is just *Chef's kiss*
Yes, I love this. Despite Strive being a very different game, these characters are still themselves.

It is nice to know a few things didn’t carry over to the New Testament, but there’s still plenty at their disposal to make them an nightmare to still deal with.
testament in +R is the kind of character that makes you wonder if it would be quicker to just alt-f4 out the moment he makes you block something rather than sit in an infinite blockstring you know you aren't escaping
To be fair, even though he remains busted, for good pressure he needs either things setup or to spend meter, if you're blocking for an eternity you're probably holding fake stuff
The Elvenshadow clip was basically the worst-case scenario - getting cursed in the corner and eating a CH KD from it to let an EXE beast come out, against a testament with close to 50 meter. Elvenshadow probably thought he could clear the FB skull with j.2k, but he probably wouldn't have taken the KD if he'd done something other than press a button. Ofc Kesuke is a great player and I doubt Elvenshadow would have been able to get out of that situation for free especially as Faust, but it's worth noting that this situation wasn't just Testament being broken.
If they were able to bring testament and their crazy ass pressure back, do you think it's possible to bring back A.B.A? Watching high level A.B.A play is always hype.
If you watched the gameplay guide video, they absolutely gutted his kit. No trees, no web, the beast move isn't an independent hitbox, can't be summoned twice. The crow is gone-ish(replaced by fairies), the overhead is now a special move.
Also you're going to be playing him Strive. And Strive is Slooooooooooow.
Testament was my main. I really love testament, aba and zappa but testament literally is another character now. Im glad to see him after 2 decades but is so different that I don´t want to see Aba or Zappa restructured like him. I wish that the agressive change in gameplay is due to it is strive and not a permanent change. The new aesthetic and voice acting is also shocking, maybe these changes are going to be permanent, the game itself its getting more politically friendly and correct so if they revert these changes they would be accused of homo/trans/whatever phobia so this is now the new testament and if people dont like it, probably it will be his last appearance in a GG game.
The excuse that Testament is a gear so he doesnt have sex is a nonsense, sol and dizzy are gears too but they are not asexual beings. I think that it was a quick answer to explain why they decided to change him.

Testament is the poster child of characters who can convert off of everything. His spinning move gives him hard KD and half screen corner carry off of literally anything.

The reason why they have no gender is because he was kidnapped and turned into a literal killing machine, meaning he no longer has any sort of romantic or sexual desires for anything. After all he was programmed to genocide the human race. Of course it all changed with Dizzy, he was freed from his programming and now he only seeks to live in peace. However it's important to know that despite being an inhuman Gear, he is still the same guy that got kidnapped. WHich is why I hate his new design, his new expressions make no sense, he was always an androgynous male, but he still had his broad shoulders, his straight legs very characteristic of men due to our differences in our pelvic bone. The new design is almost 100% female, it makes 0 sense. Not only that his personality was completely changed but not in a convincing way, Just look at his movement in the old games to how he is like now.
It's like they made him gay or something, it makes no sense when he continues to be treated as having no gender. That's now how personality changes work.
They literally did this just for fan service purposes.
AC Testament was honestly way more messed up, only really held back by the power levels being higher in that version. They were also a more boring kind of messed up, for example one of the beasts (I think h) would come out on frame 2 and hit a bit later so it was a frame 2 abare option which trades favorably (you hit testament, the beast hits you) and was way harder to bait than their 2f abare in plus r which is warrant.
Just checked and I think h beast was very plus too. This character rly was only held back by eddie being a war criminal
there are people in the comments that want +R testament in strive, which is very strange. i want justice in strive, but i want her to have a completely different moveset bc i understand that playing against her is torturous, same as +R testament. GG players hate every character regardless tho so what're you gonna do lol
One thing not mentioned is the succubus scythe hit from the crow is an overhead. He can unblockable you in that scenario and when you have to pay attention to 2-3 things it's incredibly difficult to block.
I can't wait for the Zappa episode.
It's wild how in AC, Pot was terrifying to face as Zappa (one of his worst matchups) while in +R, Zappa vs Pot is potentially the worst matchup in the game (in Zappa's favor). I wouldn't doubt if Sword Zappa vs Potemkin was one of the most one-sided matchups in any competitively played GG.

it seems, like the took more from EX Tesstament into strive (idk, how he worked in older games), having less traps, dust is a 'mid' and a big launching version of exe beast (which is basically the super in strive, but EX could do re-launch loops)
You should do one of these videos for the Characters that have already been out including the base roster. Its interesting to present these established characters from this perspective.
I would dig that a lot too! But I guess maybe since the characters can already be experienced hands on, it's less of a necessity compared to characters who haven't made it in yet.

Just a note, maybe you shouldn't talk about "intant" overhead for "unreactable" overhead... I feel like you do understand there is a slight but important difference. unreactable overhead, you can often find counter measures, usually fuzzy guard or some invincible defensive options. Instant overhead are quite nastier since you often are put into multiple true 50/50 (since most characters in 2D fighters have an unreactable low).
Guilty Gear, where every character is simultaneously loved and hated by everyone.
As excited as I am for Testament not having a single and I mean ONE SINGLE TRAP really hurts.

Strongly agree with you. I guess the curse returns as a “Stain,” but Test no longer poisons, and Sexy Beasto is now an overhead/low mixup. No traps or skulls gives less control of the field and removes the one thing I loved most when playing as Test: forcing habits into your opponent.

There's even more annoying shit with this character like the crow overhead allowing you to set up unblockables, FB skull inflicting curse on block, trees being able to otg, exe beast from behind making dead angle come out in the wrong direction, a left right teleport, a frame 2 counter that hits from full screen, a dust that has good range and an animation that looks like a low that's +3 on block, the list goes on this character is nuts

The first time one of my Xrd buddies played +R, he tried to DAA out of EXEbeast. The dead angle went the wrong way. He then promptly uninstalled the game.

Personally, I hope that Strive Testament is a little... balanced in comparison to AC Testament. I know the one doesn't have webs or trees but still lol. Old Testament was basically the embodiment of getting a hard KD and then basically the game goes from being a fighting game to a movie where your participation isn't required (no I'm not salty, whatever gave you that idea?)

I think this vid could have gone on longer for how messes up this character used to be lmao. There's unblockable setups, one of the best get-out-jail counters than can be FB'd, and the how you ate a crazy mixup off every c.S
As someone who just recently got into playing accent core I got clapped by a god like Testament player. Like the mix never ended, and the damage, oh god the damage. I never knew when it was my turn 😂
To be fair, unless your playing a low-health character, Testamemt's damage is only high when he has you poisoned

As a super zoner player of Venom (and Jack-O in Rev2 and Strive), Testament was a favorite sub character to play in GGX and GGXX.
There’s definitely a new gameplan involved in Strive for Testament now, but given how Jack-O was treated I have faith they’ll still be extremely fun to play.
It should note that the powered up tree doesn't go away even when you hit Testament, and since it pops you up, it's very common for Testament to get hit and then convert into full combo on you, leading back into another powered up tree.
Testament was actually also busted in vanilla AC as well for similar reasons. They could only do one EXE beast, but forward EXE beast was like +9 before FRC, and they could loop Badlands on itself a bunch of times giving Testament really amazing bombo potential, so often times they didn't even need to put you in jail like +R testament does.
Scythe and tophat is all I need to be excited
Back when I played Reload (but the original AC was already out, we just couldn't play online on ps2), my first GG, a friend advised me about Testament: Keep your offense and your pressure as soon as the round starts, or else they'll plant a forest and you're done for. Back in Reload they weren't as terrible to deal with tho and I could counter the f out of those big pressures with my Baiken if they dared to get close enough. When we started playing AC (offline), Testament had a loop with the big circular scythe move, and once you got caught in it, it was basically GG. In AC+R (which I haven't played anything but a few hours), they don't seem to have such loop, but damn do they look even more threatening... Looking forward to Strive

LK is speaking retroactively about old Testament, not about the new Testament.
What's weird is that the S1 DLC Characters were datamined back in July. There were references in the game files to Goldlewis, Baiken, and Slayer, but instead of Slayer we got Testament. Slayer is probably going to be a Season 2 character.
WIP Goldlewis, Jack-O', Happy Chaos, Jam, and Asuka models were datamined at launch. Then subtitle data for Baiken and Slayer. But Testament was also included, with their new design, in the Story Mode ending montage with the Kiske family.
Can't wait for the "Why Guilty Gear Players STRONGLY DISLIKE the mirror."

The thing that pisses me off the most about +R Testament is Nightmare Circular. It is not the most egregious part of Testament's kit by a large margin, but why, oh why does a character who is so oppressive in the neutral get a plus on block reversal super? Unless you throw it or force it to whiff, you are basically punished (by returning to Testament's neutral at best) for making the read and blocking it.
Short answer: They can't block the mixup

I'm surprised you didn't mention the EXE beast FRC, which for 25 meter puts a large, independently moving projectile in front of the opponent (which by the way doesn't go away if you hit them) with as little as 2 frames of commitment. That essentially makes it a faster mash option than Sol 5k, gives a full combo on hit, and is +a billion on block to let Testament instantly take back their turn. It basically turns a character with otherwise mediocre anti-pressure options into one of the most threatening on defense as long as their execution is decent. This also isn't even touching on its many applications in pressure and neutral.

I'm just happy I won't have to deal with invisible, persisting traps on approach.
I just have to deal with poison, long range unreactible overheads, long range unreactible lows, large sweeping hitboxes (hopefully not disjointed) and largely burst safe offense
I mean it’s literally that Testament in +r has too much shit. FB Skull is a move that is worse than any “fuck it YRC” because it doesn’t even give a meter penalty like a YRC does. There is basically no area of the game Test is bad at, and his FRC and FBs are brainless lmao (Though FB is already a more brainless concept than YRC because it doesn’t give you a meter penalty so there’s no inherent cost besides the 25 of the move itself.)

not really. judging by the starter guide, Strive Testament is an extremely dumbed down version of +R Testament. no traps, no exe beasts, no skull.
With the exception of Happy Chaos (and I still don't think he's that difficult to learn but does require the most effort) and maaaaaaaaybe Jack-O, all of the DLC have been pretty straight-forward. Plus those starter guides they drop have been pretty great for anyone learning a new character.
Baiken is fairly easy to pick up and Testament seems fine as well.
Quarter circle inputs and straight forward projectiles don't exactly have an "insane learning curve" and this is coming from somebody who started playing fighting games a year ago. I was winning games with baiken in hours and I imagine I'll have the same experience with testament

The goal of the video isn't to say "this is how Testament is going to be in Strive." It's more like an introduction to the history of guilty gear from the perspective of competitive play.

I mean this is a cool exhibition, but strive test is basically a whole new character. I'm mad psyched for him, but he has No web, no tree, no skulls, and no auto-attack curse. No more laying a buncha shit on a downed opponent and having them wake up in a blender, so they still have a chance to get out with a good read.
