    #5 happened exactly in a D2 game I attended two years ago at the University of Montevallo. It was the weirdest thing because the umps called one thing instantly, then after a coach complained and then a long talking, the umps went back to their locker room for around 20 minutes to discuss, check the rules, make a phone call, and eventually came back to call interference. It was the most bizarre thing I've seen.

  • @Cynthionic
    @Cynthionic 5 років тому +8

    I've seen the first situation happen a few times actually, not specifically but seen 1st and 3rd where the runner at third tags and the runner at first gets thrown out at second or third depending on where the ball is

    #4:
    You could make an argument both ways. The run scores because he crossed home before it hit him. On the flipside, he could be out for interference, not scoring the run. Judgment call, and I would go to New York about this one.

    Rule 7.09 is interesting and could actually play into games much more than we think. Imagine runners in the corners with nobody out. The batter strikes out on a drop third strike and runs to first, catcher freaks out and throws to first illogically, it goes over the first baseman’s head and the run scores.

      The role stated that the act of continuing up run alone is not interference, therefore it's not. Don't know where he got the idea that it's up to the ump. Yes, every call is, but that one had a specific clause covering it. It would be interference if the runner intentionally did it, but judging by how he abandoned effort when the catcher got the ball, more than likely he thought he was safe.

    • @craigsherwood3824
      @craigsherwood3824 6 років тому +1

      Being an umpire,I have a unique view on this interference call. Especially since at all other levels, the rule governing this situation is far more specific: if a runner, already out, continues to run the bases and causes the defense to make a play on him, it shall be interference.
      It's only MLB that gives the offense a way out of the interference. However, once the runner drew a throw to home, he went to the dugout and this clearly makes me think he knew he was already out and was deliberately attempting to draw the attention of the defense. If it was unintentional, here would've continued to try and avoid the tag or waited to be tagged out. It's still judgement at the MLB level and many factors like on body language are used to determine intent.

    6:30 - that was humiliating! What could've been even more humiliating is the Astros got Fisher (pinch-running for Brian McCann) on 2nd with no outs, and then choked the next 2 outs. A catch would've ended the 10th inning.

    5/5, assuming that making the same call as the actual umpire did is counted as correct for #5. Personally I would have a hard time calling an out on runner interference in #5, because who would the third out apply to? It can't be the runner from first because he was already out, so it would have to be the batter. But the whole point of calling interference is to try to revert the play to how it would have progressed if not for the interference (at least in spirit), and even without the interference, the batter wouldn't have been out--he probably would have ended up safe at second or third after the throwing error.

    • @FivePointsVids
      @FivePointsVids  6 років тому

      If say the batter was in danger of getting in a run down then it would be seen as interference, or if it looked as if the runner’s ploy was the key factor in the batter advancing to third. If the batter was already on third when it happened then there is no decision to be made. Inning continues.

    • @quinnsamouilidis7107
      @quinnsamouilidis7107 6 років тому

      Since it's all hypothetical, it's hard to have a clear visual but I would probably have put the batter-runner at second since he most likely advanced to third on the throw home from the first-baseman which would not have happened if the runner on first had exited the field like he should have.

  • @hunterk7838
    @hunterk7838 6 років тому

    I got the first four right. In the last scenario, someone's gonna be mad at you whatever you call, but I would put the batter-runner back on second for interference by the runner, because had the runner returned to the dugout immediately, the first baseman would have thrown to third, preventing the batter-runner from advancing.

    A play kinda similar to the last one happened fairly recent in a Red Sox/Yankees game. Jacoby Ellsbury is the batter with Matt Holliday on first. Ellsbury hits it sharply to Mitch Moreland at first base. Moreland fields and throws to second to force out Holliday. However, Holliday, thinking Moreland stepped on first before throwing to second, assumed he was in a rundown and ran back to second where he, Ellsbury, Moreland, and the ball all arrived at the same time. The ball got by Moreland and, if I remember right, Ellsbury was safe, since Holliday didn't intentionally interfere

    In little leauge i got tagged out at 2nd and just kept running to third but to go back to the dugout they call me out of the baseline and it was a double play i got basically suspended because i called the ump an idiot and that i could do his job better because i wouldnt call the same person out twice

    • @Danification9
      @Danification9 6 років тому +3

      The umpire also got it wrong saying you went "out of the baseline", that's a different concept entirely. If he thought you were still alive, then the call he's looking for is abandoning the bases.

  • @davej3781
    @davej3781 5 років тому

    For #5 I've got interference by a retired runner, ball is dead, batter-runner is out for interference by his teammate. I consider continuing to advance past 2nd, 3rd, turning and heading for home to be a deliberate attempt to confuse the defense.

    #5 the play is clean. Since the batter was already out, and also started heading to the dugout before the catcher tagged him, he would be out for leaving the baseline anyway meaning the catcher did not HAVE to tag him so he did it on his own. Play is fine batter goes to 3rd

    There is a situation that happened at a rangers game. There was a runner on third. It was after the pitch was thrown and it was ruled a strike. On the throw back from the catcher to the pitcher, the ball hit the batters helmet and amongst the confusion the runner scored. It counted and was ruled a live ball. You could use this as another question

  • @Danification9
    @Danification9 6 років тому

    I umpire minor ball and I would call interference on #5. Umpires are supposed to apply the interference rules when the interference alters the play. Even if R1 in this instance did not know he was out and had no intention of deceiving the fielders, it is still interference; intent is not a requirement. R1's actions allowed the batter-runner to advance to third. The batter-runner is out for the interference of a runner who has already been put out. Rule 6.01(a)(5)

      OrangeSuperJ I was a little confused by this one too. If a hitter is, “hit square in the back,” how is that called a strike unless the batter is straddling the plate? If the batter swung to protect/interfere with the catcher catching the pitch, it can be called a strike and the batter is out with a dropped third strike.

    4 our of 5. I even got number right knowing that it was judgement. The only one I got wrong was about the ball hitting the pitch in g rubber. That's a little odd to me.

    Number 4:. When the catcher failed to catch the third strike, the batter became a runner. Unless they tag him or get the force at 1st, the run scores. Unless the ump calls the runner for interference with a thrown ball. But, since it hit him in the back, it's possible the pitch never passed through the strike zone. Great question!

      @FivePointsVids  6 років тому

      Great point! But since the ump called it a strike that solved it. As i read the ump is obligated to call the pitch a ball or a strike in the situation that is hits a runner.

      Unless it was deemed that the runner intentionally interfered with the pitcher, like say if he ran directly to the mound or something lol

    No way. I went to that astros padres game. It was 0-0 in the tenth and we were all wondering if anyone would finally score. Then it ended the way a littlw league game would

    Wait so that rule implies a runner on third base can steal home. Be declared safe. Return to the dugout but then batter strikes out and because he didn't reach first the steal didn't happen?

    I got a stumper for you. First and second, 1 out. Runners go on the pitch, hitter bats one into the outfield. Outfielder throws home and gets the lead runner in the rundown. During the rundown, the other runner runs to third, and stays. The lead runner safely returns to third. Both runners are tagged. Given that they technically never overran each other, who's out and who's safe?

      @FivePointsVids  6 років тому +1

      I believe the runner returning to his base us safe (on third) and the runner who came from second is out.

    Damn I only got #4 wrong. My thought was "He touched home and scored, the game is over and nothing after that matters." like if a football runner fumbles in the endzone. He scored, the play is over.

      Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed. Which CAN possibly break the tie, despite every team being at 0 net points.
