We're looking at a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker in West Point Gray Paint. The car comes with the 354 CI Hemi V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Harvey Rothman. Harvey’s had this car since 2018. Harvey shared his Father had Chryslers, and likes when driving this car how smooth it is to drive. He enjoys watching people take pictures of his car. Enjoy this survivor original car with great trunk and treats too including a Highway HiFi 16 2/3 RPM record player.

A 1956 automobile with power windows, power seats and factory a/c....to most younger folks this might not seem impressive, but at that time it was simply amazing and so exceedingly rare to have these ultra modern and expensive options...never fails to amaze me...because as a youngster in the 50s, you just plain never saw it...nice job lou!

That is actually after market air conditioning. It is mounted the same way that Chrysler factory Air Temp was and looks to use the Chrysler style air scoops.

That aftermarket ac system was the system that Mercedes bought and used in their cars into the 1970s.

Only if those around you at the time were so impoverished as to be restricted to low level Chevys and Plymouths.

@@dicarlo57kindly remove the silver spoon from your mouth! In 1956, it was rare to see power windows and seats, even in luxury brand automobiles. Factory air conditioning was installed in only about ten percent of all cars, encluding Cadillac, Lincoln, Imperial and Packard. You must not have been around then, I was and I do know what I am talking about, unlike you.

Chrysler, at this point in time, was about to be the major trendsetter among the Big Three, with their futuristic, space-age influenced styling on their cars...As a kid then, I could feel that our society was becoming more progressive, and had a positive, even patriotic attitude going on in the USA...we had won that horrible WW2, my parents generation was beginning to earn a future for themselves, things were getting better in general--and the space-race certainly influenced our culture in different, mostly positive ways. That is why cars of this era were so cool/outlandish!...I miss those cars, and I miss the spirit of those times.

This is a stunning car. When I was a very young child, our neighbor had this exact car in white and dark green. Almost didn't forgive him when he traded it for a 1967 Cadillac. Just couldn't compare with the Chrysler!

Very nice Chrysler -survivors are always fun to see.
The calmer colour (compared to other 1950s cars) gives this a stately and mature road presence.

I think the grill design on the New Yorker looks more refined than the grills on the Windsdor and 300B. All three share the same body design, but I like the New Yorker best.

This Chrysler with those options was rare even when new. That it survived intact is a miracle. To see a 1956 Chrysler (a Windsor convertible, not a New Yorker) put through its paces, look at the opening of the movie Julie (1956) with Doris Day and Louis Jourdan. Doris is driving and Jourdan gets in the car and mashes the gas pedal to the floor and they drive down twisty roads at top speed. Thanks, Lou, for featuring this beautiful car.

A lot of people born in the last 50 years who aren’t car buffs don’t realize how “fully loaded” this fully loaded Chrysler is. In 1956, air conditioning was still an extremely expensive option, if it was even available at all on many cars. But everything else on that car we take for granted today: power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seat…… to a lot of people in ‘56 this car would be just a dream. Most cars still had manual steering and certainly no power windows or air conditioning.

Wow! A beautiful survivor! This Chrysler Bew Yorker is in pristine condition. That has to be one of the first cars that I've seen that has the air conditioning unit in the trunk. The only flaw I noticed was the front seat was well worn. The 354 CI Hemi sounded healthy. This has to be the first video I've seen you in where you ride in the back seat due to the owner's wife riding shotgun. What a true classic Mopar Lou!

This car represents so well, the "transition" look of that mid-50s era. Fins were going to get bigger, engines were gonna get even larger, push-button transmissions were going to proliferate, particularly at Chrysler....and yet, this car, and others from that year, had some of the older styling cues, from the early 1950s,,,particularly the rather bulbous body styles, the expansive interiors with the maximum headroom, etc. The later 1950s were gonna get very "out there" for a few years...and as a kid, I loved it!

In my opinion, the last of the BEST Chryslers. These cars were so elegant and this one is a perfect example. The 1957 Chryslers looked too much like Dodges/Plymouths/DeSotos. But up until 1957, they were grand. This is a great example. Love it. Love the color. Always learn something from your videos. I was shocked to see Newport on the car! But he explained it. I have definitely heard of a St. Regis...but I bet there was more to it and than just paint! the first car I've ever seen that has TWO CLOCKS - in the Steering Wheel and the passenger side! Exhaust sound was divine! Thanks Lou!!!

    Another wunnerful car Larry..
In this Exner period every Chrysler had a number of trim choices,
from this car's single side spear to the multi-level trim and paint options.
1951 was the first Chrysler Hemi.
This is the first after-market a/c I've seen that mimics the factory Airtemp units.

Hi, Lou! "I feel special!" Yep, and I'm sure Cheryl would have said the same back in 1956! There's no shortage of cool features on this car: the fins, the griffin emblems, the clock in the steering wheel, the pushbutton transmission, the Highway Hi-Fi, and even the signature on the firewall! (My thought was maybe that was one of the workers on the assembly line showing pride in his work.) Could those Twin Tower taillights have inspired the World Trade Center?
BTW, I spotted another old Chrysler coming through at 11:41. Looks to me like a 1970 300 convertible. Also, Chrysler's first Hemi engine was introduced in 1951.
Thank you, Lou, Harvey and Cheryl for being our chauffeurs on this smooth ride through Carlisle!

Mom went to two brother doctors one delivered two of my cousins . Each guy had a Chrysler of this vintage . They came from cattle country in eastern Oregon. Richard and Elwood Lyman. Both on staff of Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley. Cars: one was a black and one was a blue and silver two tone .😮 both went to colleges in Oregon and WA from memory, both did some work in youth and high school sports.

Love this video! This very highly optioned '56 NYer looks to be wearing its original paint, and with its beautiful original fabric and leather interior and drivetrain, truly qualifies this as a survivor, as mentioned in other comments. Another indicator that this is an unmolested car is the perfect sideview alignment of the rear bumper on up thru the taillights - rarely seen this perfect on '56 Chryslers that have been redone. Would have been interesting to read the dates and info on the collection of 5 Valvoline oil change stickers still on the rear inner lefthand door. 'Newport' models for '56 signified hardtop - either 2-door or 4-door cars. As noted, St. Regis models were tri-tone 2-door hardtops offered in white with two other colors - red/black, pink/black, blues, greens. '56 was the first year of Chrysler's pushbutton transmission controls, found in the dash's left corner, operating the PowerFlite 2-speed automatic transmission. The 354 Hemi engine with single 4-barrel Carter carb here puts out 280 horsepower, compared to the '56 300-B, also with the 354 Hemi with inline dual 4-barrel Carter WCFB carbs, producing 340 hp, with an optional 355 hp version, that is thought to have been run only by Carl Kiekhaefer in his NASCAR campaigning of these 300-Bs. This car wears the 'Standard' Two-Tone paint combination, compared to drawings you show in the brochure showing extra cost 'Special' Two-Tone color schemes. In addition to the a/c vents on the rear package shelf, we see the rear radio speaker there in the center. And we see the Town & Country 'Electro-Touch' radio's foot station selection button, near the high beam headlight button. Interesting to note that power steering was optional on this NYer. Power seats and windows also optional here. Also as mentioned in another comment, I've not seen the aftermarket Novi a/c system instead of the factory AirTemp a/c system - wonder if this Novi unit was replaced at a later date after the original factory unit failed - looking at all the venting and plumbing seen here.

Ahoy to my big brother Lou! What an EPIC video and review, man. On this Labor Day I am sitting here in my tubesocked stocking feet, sweatpants pulled up to my knees (as always) and a Black Sabbath tee shirt on (sorry Mom! She used to get freaked out 🤣🤪) and my grey floppy DC sneakers, which were by the door, literally rose up and flew out, man🤪🤪! No doubt those boys are flying to Carlisle, PA in the hopes of having the honor of being hung from the rearview mirror of this gorgeous New Yorker!! If only for a moment, man-what an honor that would be! For those floppy baseball boys and for JV Johnny. I think our Dad Harvey would get a chuckle outta that! No doubt. Mom is adorable just peering over the side, and I love how you spoke so respectfully to her as you showcased this interior. What a survivor! The color (just like my grey DC's😂) and all that chrome, that huge eagle just looking for a rabbit, those guillotine-like back windows-love it! And those awesome older folks as her caretaker, just a great story! I hope you are relaxing this Labor Day, Lou! Maybe in a pair of flip-flops and a Florida keys shirt in honor of Jimmy Buffet, RIP🥲. I'll stay in my stockin' feet, Lou. Thanks big bro, JV Johnny ⚾⚾

Beautiful car Lou. My grandpa bought a pink and white one for my grandma. It had air conditioning also with power windows and brakes and steering the first car they owned that had all those goodies. It was parked by the barn for some reason. I'm guessing something went wrong with it and it was replaced with a 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 door hardtop which I now own.

The air conditioning is after-market. There was a similar factory "Air-Temp" available.
A friend, who also had a 1955 Chrysler 300, inherited a 1956 Imperial, with a wrecked front end . All he could find was a 1956 New Yorker front end(the Imperial front end was the same as the 300 front end, 1955-6), so that's what he put on. It was still a cool car with full power options. Because it was an Imperial, it had Chrysler's new 3-speed Torque-flite automatic, which became available in the middle of 1956. It also had the Imperial's "gun-sight" tail lamps. The 300 was relegated to a road trip car and the Imperial was the new daily driver.

Nice precise camera work, super fine Sir-vivor * Can that be original paint? Some people refer to their cars as a survivor, and say, "but it had one repaint", my guess - original * Compliments go to the V. Exner Chrysler design team, they sure had their ideas honed-in '55 onward * The '56 Lincoln is in its own league on the build end, but just on design the Chrysler would not look too shabby next to the same year Lincoln; with a price tag of $10 grand$$ vs Crysler at about $3,850, thnx LC and owners. . . :>/
