Claiming that he doesn’t know his own past, a rich man enlists an ex-con with an odd bit of detective work. Gregory Arkadin says he can’t remember anything before the late 1920s, and convict Guy Van Stratten is happy to take the job of exploring his new acquaintance’s life story. Guy’s research turns up stunning details about his employer’s past, and as his work seems linked to untimely deaths, the mystery surrounding Mr. Arkadin deepens.

I love this one, even though there are quite a few versions floating around and though I've seen this film many times, I'm not sure which version I was watching. I've always thought this was like a student film made by a master. Of course, anything by Welles is crucial.
E a terceira ou quarta vez que vejo este filme. Nunca é o mesmo, sempre surpreendendo com seus excessos e referências a uma cultura artística muito pessoal. Há muito para ver e acompanhar a cada sequência, de modo a manter o foco da atenção ligada na ação sempre sobre o fundo de mais, de muito mais coisas impossíveis de acompanhar. Como se com isso Welles nos pedisse para reve-lo muitas vezes, o que e próprio aliás das obras que persistem. Consegue ele esse resultado? Talvez ou certamente que não se comparado a Citizen Kane. Mas talvez quanto ao barroquismo das imagens sempre frenéticas. Isso sem nada dizer que Mister Arcádia se soma sem duvida aos outros filmes de Welles quanto ao sentido de um dos mais pessoais cineastas do Cinema.

A strange but certainly fascinating movie , more a crossover between film noir and a Beckett play or maybe a metafictional reflection of Welles on his own movies. In its approach it remind me as well of his later pet project, 'The other side of the wind', that was recently reconstructed. Thank you for uploading.

One of the funniest bits of dialog ever committed to film: the two agents of the Politzei speaking over each other in a wave of babble, and finishing with the word, "murder." Genius!

35:50 when Arkadin narrates the story of scorpion and frog, everybody would be compelled to think he is the frog, nobody can imagine he may well be a scorpion, somebody capable of harming himself.
One of my favorite moments in the film.

The scenes with Akim Tamiroff are great. They seem to be out of a different movie..almost a Samuel Beckett quality... He's so good he's worth the trip. He's got some old school tricks. Two bad Akim never wrote about his work with Orson. Three films...

Very strange movie. I was hoping there would be a final scene that would tie everything together and make sense of it all, but it never happened. Welles did a much more coherent (and only 30 minutes) version of this in the radio show, The Adventures of Harry Lime (The 3rd Man). Welles played Harry, who was the main character, instead of Van Stratten.
I could not stop watching it though...

I've watched Mr. Arkadin several times and don't remember seeing the scene with the heroin addict before...

When I was very young I saw a version of this film with the Spanish Catholic Easter hooded procession. This doesn't seem to be a version with that footage. "A capirote[1] is a Catholic pointed hat of conical form that is used in Spain and Hispanic countries by members of a confraternity of penitents. It is part of the uniform of such brotherhoods including the Nazarenos and Fariseos during Easter observances and reenactments in some areas during Holy Week in Spain and its former colonies, though similar hoods are common in other Christian countries such as Italy. Capirote are worn by penitents so that attention is not drawn towards themselves as they repent, but instead to God. "

This is an interesting curiosity. Nothing special if you are already familiar with Welles' best but still worth checking out.
This was a strange one. Definitely worth seeing, because it was an Orson Welles film, but clearly not his best. I found some of the plot a little too jumpy--not enough exposition for my taste--and much of the relationships and indeed the overall acting a little too forced. I'm no expert but it seems like it has the bones of a great film but maybe needed some more rewrites and more effort put into directing--the directing here seems a bit slap-dash to me. The crazy camera angles are over-the-top melodramatic, and the actors could have used a few more takes to achieve emotional realism. Also, I just don't think Welles was able to pull off "menacing evil" in the way he wanted--it comes off a bit cartoonish. Someone like Javier Bardem could pull this sort of project off. People mock movie remakes, but I think a remake of this film could be wonderful. All this isn't to say I don't appreciate this channel posting this film--it's wonderful to have free, easy access to an old film like this. Thank you!
Welles's performance was fine but the fellow doing the investigating was frightfully awful.the comic bit with the old man towards the end seemed out of place but it was an interesting tale,

Even 'bad' Welles is always interesting. I think the hotch-potch way he was living and working contributed to these films being, shall we say 'uneven', some scenes improvised, others acted with actors who never met. Less than ideal. But all his films, ultimately, are about him and that's the fun.

The scenes with Akim give it that Kafka Eastern Block quality. He's almost out of another movie.

It’s a ‘flea-circus’ a kind of vaudeville stage act where fleas perform tricks, drag tiny buggies, kick footballs….pretty cool OW found a way to get that into the film.
@@michaelschmichael3973 We have a science playground in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts. Or is it now at the Embarcadero.. The Exploratorium. They had a real flea circus there many years ago. I was amazed.

Welles was unsure of his own existence. (Hence all the manic activity: see David Thompson, ROSEBUD, and Josh Cohen's NOT WORKING). Here, finally deprived of relationship to anyone, Arkadin actually ceases to exist. That's how I prefer to see it anyway. This is a typically fascinating movie, constantly verging on self-parody, but still uniquely Welles.

The interiors of the yacht scene with Patricia Medina have aged badly. Over acting coupled with bad dialogue and motion sickness. Ugh.
Whew, the ADR is rough in this movie. But it gives it an almost Radio Play kind of quality to it.

Eu cheguei a fazer um comentário, mas pelo jeito parece que foi deletado. O fato é que o procurei tentando me lembrar do que dissera, e não o encontrei! Mas não tem importância, era apenas o comentário de um espectador. Bem sei que WELLES é parte dos grandes cineastas mas com uma obra pequena devido às dificuldades de financiamento e ao seu temperamento avesso aos interesses comerciais da grande indústria. Então, talvez se possa dizer que Mr. Arcádia é um pouco o resultado desse conflito. Procurando popularizar sua temática do personagem "biger than life" falhou. Etc., etc....
A lot of elements of "Citizen Kane" are re-used here. Basically it's the same kind of search for the real person behind a famous and powerful image. But without the resources he enjoyed at RKO, and a coherent script, Welles doesn't come close to achieving the same impact.
My favorite scene is on the boat with all those people at the party. Welles achieves a unique quality with that crowd that's genius. I never forgot it. It's really the best part of the movie.
LOVE Me Some WELLES: But What If Mr. Zouk In Scene One (and he kinda looked that way to me when the first shot presented him - WAS Deceased? And The Conversation Which Took Place Was Between One Living and One Dead Man Because The Main Character Could Hear His Response...now that's silly...

Almost an interesting flick but not quite.
what a mess...
The opening scenes, first 8 minutes, were not well done. It was really difficult to see what was happening. I watched for another 12 minutes. The movie didn't grab me for some reason.
Well , I'm only 3/4 of the way through, and I had to stop. What the hell is going on here. There is some typical Orson Well's "stuff" here. Strange camera angles, Facial close ups, Wells staring down at the camera, crowd scenes, carnival faces, strange over the top characters, fierce make up, more strange names than anyone can remember .etc. Add to that very poor editing,.......................well that's enough, I'll watch the rest tomorrow, with my summing up.

@@ThePiratemachineThere are certainly parts that are pure genius (the 2 spies/coppers are 1:11, for example) but the film is hollow at the center. There is nothing to hold the viewers interest, beyond Welles directorial sleight of hand camera work. Do you really care who Mr Arkadin is ? I don't.

Yes, it's really too bad. He's trying so hard to be the tough guy, without the smarts, charm or rueful irony. In his defense, Arden may have been badly directed.

Great way to isolate your subject. I made a short film noir and just intuitively found myself shooting up at my people. It was right for those shots.
Sorry, this thing is unwatchable to me, lousy picture quality, stilted acting, annoying dialogue, a silly storyline, and an unbearably self-indulgent vibe. I forced myself to sit through the first hour and then couldn’t take another second of it.
