Away back in the 80s Steve Davis was the man to beat he was like a machine never missed 'but he had the personality of a fish 'never smiled unless he won the world championship 'but he was almost unbeatable
Steve Davis always played the technical tight way against Stephen in these years. And it may be strange for me to say this. But he played this world semi final against Stephen as a means of trying not to lose instead of going all out to win this match. He had umpteen chances to win frames in which he lost. In 1987 he didn't play this way. He was really finished here. And it was very obvious watching this match again, Like I did when i watched this whole semi live back in 1994 when I just turned 17 years old. I was routing for Steve to win back then in 1994 in this match. But I now see the difference.
At 4 hours 23 mins in, Davis puts Hendry back in after the ref calls a miss but apparently the ref doesn’t need to put the reds back where they were as they don’t affect the shot on. Did you prefer that rule or the current rule which requires all balls to be replaced?
They can still do that. If a player misses, he can be asked to replay the original shot or play on from the new position. I'm sure it happened in this year's WC final.
Comparing Steve Davis in this match to the old tremendous Steve Davis of the 1986_1987 season is like looking at 2 totally different players. I definitely preferred the 1986_1987 version of Steve. Much more purpose and rhythm around the table with fluency. He was finished here. It's sad to see. But it would of been a much nicer sight to see a 28_29 year old Steve Davis of 1986_1987 instead of a 1994 version against Stephen here at his very best 1994. 1 thing for sure I'd this...Steve Davis wouldn't of missed as many balls that cost him frames anyway.
Between the world championship snooker in April 1990 until this semi final in 1994, Steve Davis looked as dead here as he looked as brilliant in 1990. The 1990 world championship was the last time we saw Steve Davis the Great player he was. When he lost that 1990 world semi to Jimmy 16_14, Steve looked like a wounded tiger. In this match with Stephen there was no tempo, rhythm or fluency in Steve,s play anymore. He missed alot more here than in the 1990 world championship also. And another thing that went right downhill was his long potting. If you gave him a long pot to go at in 1989_1990, He never seemed to miss. His slow play in 1994 was deliberate to slow his opponents down. But it did him no favours though. He won shite from this point on. He won nothing after this match. That's why I think he should of retired at losing this match. He was totally gone.
Seen a couple of the close davis hendry games of this period...same pattern a poor negative safety by Davis followed by Hendry potting great balls and a wee bit of run to folow..the game turns Hendry gets momentum...Davis still a great player early 90s maybe bit unfortunate.. two kings of the game....
Steve Davis was actually the Peter Ebdon of his day with a bit more perpencity for grinding out a win, looking back it's strange how we did not notice.
The first full final I did see between Steve Davis was against Alex in the Rotherham,s Grand Prix final on Sunday 23rd October 1988, When Steve was deadly. Steve beat Alex 10_6, Steve stamped his authority on that final in the very first frame with 137 total break. Steve beat Dennis 9_1 in the semi final playing awesome. Steve was a world away then than he was here in this match. Here it was like comparing 2 totally different players. Nothing alike anymore at all sadly to say.
@@parksyist When the second Semi Final came on later Davis Vine said that Hendry had won. And that was that. I'm sure I even have him saying it. Could have been shown in the late night program that went out. But their final session was played in the afternoon when Grandstand was on before moving to BBC2.
Ronnia the greatest natural player of all time but 100% Hendry is the most complete player of all time to only lose 3 times at the world championships in 10 years that says it all
Davis winning 9 frames off a peak Hendry in a world semi final at the Crucible was a remarkable a achievement. But Hendry was desperate to stop Davis getting to 10 frames (or even 16 frames), you could have put a 1 in front of the 9 for Davis frame total the way Hendry was going about those last 8 frames.
@@danielreynolds8357 No but he was only 7 frames away from returning to world number one when it was 9-8 to Davis (it would have won Davis a best of 17 match vs Hendry). Davis was brilliant to lead in the 3rd session of a world semi final against a peak Hendry before Hendry really found his range.
@@SnookerFan-kl1jj White wasn’t mentally weak. He won 10 ranking tournaments and 30 overall. He was a careless player sometimes and partied way too hard. He kept running into Hendry, that was his problem. The weak era excuse is complete BS.

Just because Alex Higgins did it while drunk doesn't mean that White would definitely have done without facing Hendry in the final. White probably misees and then misses again against somebody else after missing the black had he been in same situation as vs Hendry in frame 35 of the final, you can't be sure rhat White definteiy beats any of the other 15 players he could potentially have faced in the final. White doesn't definitely beat any of 30 other players in each of the 5 rounds as though he would definitely have had 30 wins × 5 rounds to his belt. White also doesn't win 7 world tilles like O'Sullivan has had he been 48 today.
Could someone convey to me the idea of the roll up snooker behind the bottom three balls. From my limited knowledge of snooker these shots are taken with little care. I understand the touching ball rule, but these guys never really lock their opponent up like you would try in 8,9, or 10 ball. Minute 19:30 of this match is a good example. The crowd was clapping a shit shot. Thanks!
Hendry, Davis,Selby, Higgins, Williams Reardon and O'Sullivan.Just imagine them all in the same era at there prime best that would be interesting.I think Ronnie would be the favorite but they'd never get an era like it again.
Davis in the semis followed by White In the final were never going to both lose to Hendry with a session to spare back to back in 1994 world championships. Such forecasts by some people never come to fruition.
This is all wrong. John Higgins is way better than Davis. He's (John) made over 750 century breaks & 9 maximums. Mark Selby is better than Steve Davis as well. Davis only made 300 centuries & 1 maximum break.
@@wayneholmes6460 Theres more to snooker than break building , but i had put them wrong way around i believe Higgins to be #3, , yes Selby and Trump are getting up there now too
@@wayneholmes6460 Davis only did as much as he had to, had Hendry come along in the early 80's at his peak, Davis would have upped his game just like Alex Higgins Dennis Taylor etc did against Davis, you only do as much as your adrenaline needs to at the time to win
@Craig JohnsonExactly right! Unfortunately nearly everyone chooses to forget or accept this fact. The tables changed for better break building, hence the much higher century breaks rate. Steve Davis game rapidly declined much past 1989. He was much more prone to missing easy shots. Probably playing at 80% of his best and it showed time after time.
Both were O Sullivan's bogey players. Beat him more than Ronnie beat them. Both more consistent in my opinion. If Hendry was playing in Davis"s prime. It would be harder to call
That revelation of Hendry playing with a broken bone in his elbow....if the drugs of choice were banned in the 80s, what legal painkillers must he have been on?
I saw a clip from a press conference where he talked about the problems he had with the painkillers. Basically, he had to stay off them during matches to keep a clear head.
As much as I disliked Davis in those years, I really wanted him to beat Hendry so we would have had Davis vs White II (WORLD REMATCH FROM 1984), I think Jimmy would have been more confident against Steve in the final.
Davis was a spent force in this match and the 1994 time. Hendry was the greatest davis ever played. But Steve davis was at his ultimate best in the late 1980,a. In this match davis missed too many golden chances to win frames and the was no fluency in his scoring either. Compare that to Steve davis of 1988. Hendry did get his act together in this match. But all in all hendry took his chances alot better than Davis. I remember watching this semi in 1994. In the end hendry deserved to win. Davis couldn't take his chances.
@@ianwilliamson2980 I agree Hendry was a greater player. More talented and natural. But I will say though that Steve Davis in the 1990,s wasn't as good as he was in the 1980,s and I know that for a fact. I first watched he in the late 1980,s and he was alot more free flowing will a nice fluent pace in his potting. I know he didn't have Hendry at his very best in the late 1980,s. @@ianwilliamson2980 Yes, Davis was head and shoulders above the rest in the 1980,s. So I agree with you. If Davis scored heavier than the rest in which he did, then why didn't he take more risks against those players. He needed to be more attacking against Hendry. Steve Davis was an attacking player between 1986_1990. I know because I watched him in those years. I have alot of his matches in the 1980,s. He was a much better player in the late 80,s for sure. His all round game had improved. 1988 was when Steve Davis was at his ultimate best. He won more tournaments in 1988 than any either year.
Steve Davis really should of retired from snooker after this match. Because it's evident watching how he performed how rubbish he really became around this time in 1994. He hinted at retirement after losing to Peter Ebdon in the world championships 1st round of 1992 10_4. He should of done it then really.
Why retire ? He was still in the top 16 up until 2007 he won the 1995 welsh open beating jihn higgins and he beat ronnie to win the 1997 masters and he should have beaten ronnie in the 2004 welsh open final and almost won the 2005 uk championship aswell
@@adamoliver5589 I remember watching him in the late 1980,s and he was a much better player than the 1990,s. He lost his fluency. He started missing too many balls. In that match with Henry 1994 world, Davis must of missed a dozen pots He would never of missed in the 80,s. He could of went 3_0 up but missed an easy black on its spot. He became too slow and it actually ruined his game by doing that.
@@adamoliver5589 Why retire. Well he never got to another world semi. He was no longer beating Hendry. He only won 1 more ranking tournament. The UK final 2005 he lost. He didn't beat o sullivan in the 2004 Welsh open final after leading 8_5. The 1997 masters final he should of lost. 8_4 down. Possibly o sullivan let Davis win that because o sullivan was the best player in that final. All in all Davis looked really shite. I watched him all the time from 1988 until 1998. @@adamoliver5589 He was going down hill very fast and going down the ranks. Yes he could beat good players. But winning tournaments was ending. Between 1993_2005 Davis never beat Hendry once. That just goes to show how much he declined. He could only dream of beating Hendry at that point. The problem is. Steve Davis was always very single minded in the way he played. So he was never going to change and become an attacking player. He needed to become alot more attacking and he needed to except Hendry and his immense talent. Davis had it all his own way for a long time. It was extremely hard for Davis when Hendry became champion of the world.

Davis had a bit of a revivel 93-94 had he won this match he would have been back to number 1
Away back in the 80s Steve Davis was the man to beat he was like a machine never missed 'but he had the personality of a fish 'never smiled unless he won the world championship 'but he was almost unbeatable
I've seen him laughing and joking after a defeat when Terry Griffiths beat him in the final of the '82 Lada Classic.
He didn't smile like Hendry?
they cut most of steven hendry's winning frames out.
Hendry won 16-9 - he won eight frames in a row
Amazing how pissed John Spencer sounded!
2 legends
Not a patch on this fella… ua-cam.com/video/pSP_ccbLQ58/v-deo.html
Seen a couple of the close davis hendry games of this period...same pattern a poor negative safety by Davis followed by Hendry potting great balls and a wee bit of run to folow..the game turns Hendry gets momentum...Davis still a great player early 90s maybe bit unfortunate.. two kings of the game....
Steve Davis was really finished in this match. And the way he played proved it all.
Steve Davis was actually the Peter Ebdon of his day with a bit more perpencity for grinding out a win, looking back it's strange how we did not notice.
Who won this match?x
the era before players were dressed like billboards or Indy 500 racers.
Billboards? Indy 500 racer?
The first full final I did see between Steve Davis was against Alex in the Rotherham,s Grand Prix final on Sunday 23rd October 1988, When Steve was deadly. Steve beat Alex 10_6, Steve stamped his authority on that final in the very first frame with 137 total break. Steve beat Dennis 9_1 in the semi final playing awesome. Steve was a world away then than he was here in this match. Here it was like comparing 2 totally different players. Nothing alike anymore at all sadly to say.
Do you have the end of this match?
It was never shown on the BBC. Not to my knowledge anyway.
Really a world semi final that's surprising
@@parksyist When the second Semi Final came on later Davis Vine said that Hendry had won. And that was that. I'm sure I even have him saying it. Could have been shown in the late night program that went out. But their final session was played in the afternoon when Grandstand was on before moving to BBC2.
Ronnia the greatest natural player of all time but 100% Hendry is the most complete player of all time to only lose 3 times at the world championships in 10 years that says it all
Yeah..shame we never saw both at their peaks playing at the same time. As Davies phased out Hendry came in..as Hendry peaked O sullivan came along...
3:15:58 Davis at his best
Davis in the late 1980,s was at his very best not 1994. He wasn't.
@@danielreynolds8357
No but he was only 7 frames away from returning to world number one when it was 9-8 to Davis (it would have won Davis a best of 17 match vs Hendry). Davis was brilliant to lead in the 3rd session of a world semi final against a peak Hendry before Hendry really found his range.
It's just a general term for the shot not overall
I think Stephen proved this year he was best ever even winning with a fractured arm.
No the only thing that this win proved was how poor the competition was. White in particular was the definition of a mentally weak player.
@@SnookerFan-kl1jj White wasn’t mentally weak. He won 10 ranking tournaments and 30 overall. He was a careless player sometimes and partied way too hard. He kept running into Hendry, that was his problem. The weak era excuse is complete BS.
@@johnmc3862
White would not definitely have won the world vhampionship final against no matter who 1 of the 15 other players from Hendry's half of the draw had he playef somebldy else instead while intoxicated and still not sobered down after being st the pub all night until closing time and getting back to the hotel room.
Thanks!
They didn’t clap the shit shot, they clapped the break he’d just made. The commentator confirmed it was a shit shot by saying “he’s overhit that”
legends!
Really good
Strange to hear a calm John Virgo commentating.😊
Anyone got the video where Davis thrashed Hendry In the 1989 world championships?
Hendry 7 Davis 6....🏴 🏴 🏴 🏴
Hendry was the King but he learnt how to win from the Nuggett 😉
mjt snooker just uploaded it few days back - hope you don't mind me referring this walters147
@@nobbyjarvis2035thats outstanding thanks!
Hendry, Davis,Selby, Higgins, Williams Reardon and O'Sullivan.Just imagine them all in the same era at there prime best that would be interesting.I think Ronnie would be the favorite but they'd never get an era like it again.
selby is a plodder who stinks out his matches hardly making a break over 30..davis & hendry would have smashed him out of sight
Davis claimed he hated the 90's - Hendry had his number from 1990 onwards.
Still nobody better than hendry at middle pockets
Alex Higgins was.
Davis in the semis followed by White In the final were never going to both lose to Hendry with a session to spare back to back in 1994 world championships.
Such forecasts by some people never come to fruition.
Why it stop at 12-9? It finished 16-14
No it didn't
16-9 ok but where are the other 4 frames???
Hendry #1 OSullivan#2 Davis #3 John Higgins#4 , simple as that ...
This is all wrong. John Higgins is way better than Davis. He's (John) made over 750 century breaks & 9 maximums. Mark Selby is better than Steve Davis as well. Davis only made 300 centuries & 1 maximum break.
@@wayneholmes6460 Theres more to snooker than break building , but i had put them wrong way around i believe Higgins to be #3, , yes Selby and Trump are getting up there now too
@@wayneholmes6460 But I also have to say No one was WAY better than Davis at his peak
Davis was not the same player after 1989!!
He had to wear his arm in a sling at all times other than when he was playing and placing his bridge arm for certain shots gave him considerable pain
3:18:03 no ratings for Darren Morgan 😂😂
?
500/1 to win the tournament according to the graphic. Ouch 😂
13 wcs between them classic
I think even len the ref was enjoying this
Ne1 got any tips on how a Complete novice of the game can improve his game?
Both were O Sullivan's bogey players. Beat him more than Ronnie beat them. Both more consistent in my opinion. If Hendry was playing in Davis"s prime. It would be harder to call
Wrong. Sullivan had a winning head to head record against both players.
@@johnp515 Yes, way after their peaks.
John Higgins the first world title he was unplayable
Hardly, Doherty was 6 frames behind him.
4:27:58

they only met 2 times att the crucible 89 semis davis won 16 -9
Stephen Hendry, sete vezes campeão do mundo, provavelmente o melhor jogador de snooker de sempre!!!!
Everybody's doing the Len Ganley stance
Would've been nice to see Davis v Jimmy in a 90s final see if Jimmy would have still bottled it
Bit harsh there....
Not really lol 4 out of 6 finals he should have won
And 82 semi finals
@@parksyist Apart from 94 which other finals are you referring to.
92
1994 snooker looks like 1984 snooker.
Beating davis with a broken hand.
Was it a snooker break?
@@edmundpower1250 🤣
Jeezus. And people say Peter Ebdon is slow. (Yeah, he is) Imagine Davis playing Ebdon.
"CLASH OF THE TITANS"
Hendry was a big obstacle to davis march.
Wonder if Jimmy would have won had Davies got to the final?
Probabll;y not....he could be 17-0 and still lose it
Crowd and commentators do biased towards Steve Davis
As much as I disliked Davis in those years, I really wanted him to beat Hendry so we would have had Davis vs White II (WORLD REMATCH FROM 1984), I think Jimmy would have been more confident against Steve in the final.
What a sub-standard match
Yes the start of davis's decline. Stephen Hendry was the start of the new era..he was stronger than davis.
How bloody irritating. You upload a 4 hour video and cut the end off. That's really shite mate
Not henry at his best but good enough even with cracked bone in arm to beat Davis who was playing near his best here.
@@danielreynolds8357 even at his best he was not as good as hendry at his best.
But Davis didn't miss as much and he didn't make as many mistakes. He would of been more of a match for Hendry if he was several years younger although Hendry would have the upper hand in matches.
@@danielreynolds8357 yes I agree.davis was at his best in eighties.hendry had that bit more courage too he went for the shots .Davis would refuse to take risks and played a bit cowardly really .
I didn't watch him anymore. I got totally fed up with watching how boring he had become. Honestly he should of retired after 1994 world.
@@danielraynolds9502 i agree the 80's version of steve davis was better than the 90's and 00's version that goes without saying but to say retire in 1994 when he was still capable of winning and competing with the worlds best is too early in my opinion but i respect your opinion also
@@adamoliver5589 He was going down hill very fast and going down the ranks.
