Respected player Steve Davis a true legend and a great performer I started watching snooker in the 80's because of him also John Higgins is my favorite a great player and a humble person
I used to enjoy watching the young Steve Davis dominate Snooker when I lived in the UK in the mid-1980s. It was a thrill to see the 52-year-old Davis beat the defending World Champion in this epic battle of nerves.
Steve Davis's cueing technique was absolutely flawless, and while Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan were better players in the end Davis's impact cannot be forgotten

But with Steve getting a good start and John having to play catch up all game, the pressure was on him to live up to the expectations and win the match. All credit to Steve for keeping his composure and pulling out the win.

@@Masterdoctorgenius14 Indeed. Fair play to O'Sullivan. He is the most naturally gifted player we have ever seen. It doesn't change the fact that Davis was also fantastic. Of all the players I have seen I would say O'Sullivan is the greatest, Hendry no.2 and Davis no.3.

To those who claim the match was fixed: Higgins played okay, his "worst" shot was the red in the last frame. IF he missed it deliberately, why go so many points in front and put Steve under that much pressure? Consider that Davis had an early lead, played positive shots all the way through and stood up to the pressure. If John wanted to fix the match why make it this close against a player who's playing well? There was every chance of Steve buckling in there. And you might also consider that these long matches are rarely good snooker all the way through; the Selby - O'Sullivan final 2014 was absolutely gruesome for the last couple of frames; you could have accused both players of match fixing, no matter the outcome, by that logic.
Firstly in no way do i think this match was fixed. But if you are going to fix a match then this is how you would do it make the match as close and as tense as possible as so to avoid suspicion. You mention the O'sullivan v Selby match as an example of why not accuse this match of fixing then. But a match only comes under suspicion when there are irregular betting patterns. So i would say that there were no irregular betting patterns on any of these 2 matches.
lukemjp1 is spot on. Higgins was caught red handed trying to take money for throwing specific frames in matches, which would benefit those "in the know" by betting on those frames.
@Captmcneil. What you have just said are words of a person who is looking at this objectively, unfortunately human beings just love a conspiracy theory, but like most conspiracy theories they are based on zero facts and just assumptions. I'm with you, I do not believe for one minute this match was fixed, just Higgins wasn't playing his best snooker, he had also played pretty average in his first round match and missed some easy shots but he still won that game. Why would Higgins fix a match in the world championship, he would earn a fortune by winning the title. He also had a lot of close matches the previous year, if he went on to lose those, would people have called those matches fixed too?
Every time Higgins misses a pot or loses a match people cry fix, as if he's invincible and only plays crap when he wants to. Watched his semi against Dave Gilbert yesterday, where he missed a ton of pots and only really played well in one session out of four...
What an amazing match. Absolutely loved it. I don't want to bring this up but... Did anyone get suspicious that Higgins threw that last frame? I never thought it until the final frame. Then I wondered...has he deliberately lost this whole match. We know he's been in trouble for match fixing before. And the commentary kept mentioning what small odds Davis had of winning... I hate to say it, but I can't help but get a whiff of corruption 😢
Nope. For the simple fact that two things have to happen for there to be a chance of match-fixing -- a player obviously has to throw the match, but there also has to be dodgy betting patterns. The latter would've been detected, because for Higgins to recoup the amount of money he was losing out on for not winning the tournament (prize money was £250,000 for the winner), there would have to be an insane amount of money put on Davis to win that match, even with the long odds. Nobody in their right mind would've put more than a few quid -- maybe even a few hundred quid -- on Davis winning the match. So any bet in the thousands-of-pounds would've attracted suspicion. Also: Davis played well, it's not like Higgins handed the match to Davis on a plate. Yeah he missed shots like all players do, but even if you're throwing a match, you can't bank on your opponent playing well enough to win the match. That's why there was nothing untoward here -- there is zero evidence of any match-fixing here.
I've just come here after watching Steve's great efforts at the World Pool Championships in 2000, but it amazes me how much he's aged in just 10 years!
From 40 to 50 is for most people a transition period depending on their body types. Then from 50 to 60 is a big change. Now Steve is in his 60's and he could very well stabilize if he did fitness and lost weight...
For some reason I was absolutely sure that Higgins was world champion in 2010, so, just like Steve, I was sure he'd win this. Against this presumption, though, not only was I very happy to see Steve win frames, I foolishly started hoping that he'd win… and then those last 2 frames … and those last few balls… I could hardly stand the tension! Jumping in my seat, tearing at my hair… But Steve Davis, under unfathomably more tension, and pressure, he could! And he did! Immensely impressive, and still: so very, very interesting! Thank you for uploading. What a match! On the downside… I thought, what if John was paid to loose? 16:1 is quite a temptation for gangsters. Speaking of which: didn't the ref look like a thug? Maybe he was there to remind Higgins of the deal. Sigh. I wish I'd never heard of that friggin scandal!
Only watched 30 minutes, but damn I was impressed with Davis for his age and stage in his career. Cueball control could be tighter, but otherwise well played.
Yeah, how he can deal with stressful situations is impressive for his age. Not many players performing at this level at his age. A real athlete in all the meanings of the word.
To beat ronnie and higgins towards the end of his career ronnie best player to pick up a cue and a genious and john higgins the tactical magician himself and all this towards and at the end of his career well says it right there dont it What a way to go out
Sad things about this is that watching Higgins missing some easy pots, I couldn't help but think "Is he throwing this frame?" Ruined Higgins for me and honestly, cast a shadow over one of the great eras. Fact that he got away with it is sad and while I really like all the players in the top echelons of the game (and Hearn), it just goes to show that some of these guys are bigger than the game because Higgins should have been booted quicker than Stephen Lee
They threw Stephen Lee to the wolves, Higgins definitely should have got a few years ban at least but he brings in the numbers that Stephen Lee didn't. Money the root of all evil.
That was on my mind at the time. Maybe he threw too many frames and got out of his rhythm and accidentally lost match. I dont think so but not sure at all.
The quick aging may be due to family stress, he's got at least 3 kids. A lot of stress. Also, the fact he got caught cheating with the gambling could be a very stressful life situation. Most stressed people gain weight, which has happened to him. He's a smart player but you can't beat stress if you don't deal with it.
Annoying thing about these long videos is when you want to watch a shot again so click back what you think is a few seconds or so, end up clicking back about 4 frames. Good to rewatch some of this though again
I love Steve but there was something deeply suspicious here. I hate saying that, esecially given that it was one of Steve's proudest victories. In my opinion John seems to be throwing the match. In the last frame especially he plays some uncharactieristically bad shots. At 8:14:50, just as he's on the verge of taking the frame, he somehow misses the pack of reds. At 8:15:25 is a terrible attempt at a double - away from the pocket by more than the width of the ball. At 8:16:56 is a ridiculous shot - why make such an attacking 'safety' shot (splitting the reds but ideally leaving the cue ball safe) when you are 42 points ahead? Except he didn't even leave the cue ball safe, with several pottable balls. Far more sensible to just roll up on a red. At 8:18:55 he makes the obvious mistake of cannoning the red on the baulk cushion, as Ken called out, and full ball at that. At 8:19:36 instead of putting a colour safe on the cushion he inexplicably leaves it in full play, as Willie points out. At 8:20:36 an absolutely careless safety shot - what was he even trying to do with the red? He plays it straight into the brown/blue, why? At 8:22:14 he plays a terrible attempt at a pot. Even I'd pot that. At 8:28:42 an abysmal attempt at the pot, missing it by a wide margin and it's not clear to my eye at least what colour he was positioning for. At 8:30:32, again, a terrible shot. Why would you run the yellow back down the middle of the table, when that goes straight into the path of blue, pink and black? I'd play it slightly to the right, around the angle off the top cushion, off the right/green cushion, and back down towards the black/bottom cushion. It's bad shot after bad shot, and the most suspicious thing is that it's every aspect of his game: bad object balls and bad cue balls, bad pot attempts and bad safety attempts, bad shot choice and bad shot execution. It looks like a man trying to lose the match. They say at 8:36:05 that the odds of John winning were 16/1. There was a lot of money to be made in Steve winning...
To everyone devaluing Steve's win by saying John fixed this, how many people queried the match in the 4-5 months after leading up to the newspaper sting? I can't remember anyone saying there was something suspicious? Both players in this match took on some very strange shot choices and missed sitters. I'm not reading anyone speculating Steve cheated? If anyone has an issue with John after the newspaper story then that's nust human nature, I get that, but there's no proof in this that he cheated and it's unfair to claim it's the only reason Steve won.
Mr Davis is one of the nicest men you could ever meet - whilst most celebs think themselves above the man in the street, Mr Davis will go out of his way to sign autographs and even start conversations with a member of the public - I have nothing but admiration for this true gent.

On the downside… I thought, what if John was paid to loose? 16:1 is quite a temptation for gangsters. Speaking of which: didn't the ref look like a thug? Maybe he was there to remind Higgins of the deal.
Sigh. I wish I'd never heard of that friggin scandal!
V sadly missed as a professional player and i believe he still could complete a legend of the game
Imagine if Jimmy White made the same run at next year's worlds
Don't make me dream with tears running down my face
White never wins the world's I'm afraid....
such a shame
He'd have to play Higgins every round.
He will lol
idol forever Steve Davis
How fascinating can this game get. Six time world champion feeling pressure and puffing cheeks in the latest years of his career
great match
Only watched 30 minutes, but damn I was impressed with Davis for his age and stage in his career. Cueball control could be tighter, but otherwise well played.
Yeah, how he can deal with stressful situations is impressive for his age. Not many players performing at this level at his age. A real athlete in all the meanings of the word.
thank you
Davis legend of snooker
28:01 💯% no head movement
I love how still he stays on the shot of his whole 38 year career!!! ROBOT STEVE NOW A DJ!!!??????
To beat ronnie and higgins towards the end of his career ronnie best player to pick up a cue and a genious and john higgins the tactical magician himself
and all this towards and at the end of his career well says it right there dont it
What a way to go out
Sad things about this is that watching Higgins missing some easy pots, I couldn't help but think "Is he throwing this frame?" Ruined Higgins for me and honestly, cast a shadow over one of the great eras. Fact that he got away with it is sad and while I really like all the players in the top echelons of the game (and Hearn), it just goes to show that some of these guys are bigger than the game because Higgins should have been booted quicker than Stephen Lee
Absolutely. Video evidence, online for all to see. Nothing. Stephen Lee... 12 year ban? Mental.
The biggest shame of all is that it has cast a shadow over a fantastic performance and win by Davis, through no fault of his.
They threw Stephen Lee to the wolves, Higgins definitely should have got a few years ban at least but he brings in the numbers that Stephen Lee didn't. Money the root of all evil.
Good question watching Higgins 2022 and 2002 he looks different player maybe frame fixing as a player playing to fix frame would be unnerving
That was on my mind at the time. Maybe he threw too many frames and got out of his rhythm and accidentally lost match. I dont think so but not sure at all.
8:22:10 story of this match
Scary how much Higgins has aged in just 9 years
The quick aging may be due to family stress, he's got at least 3 kids. A lot of stress. Also, the fact he got caught cheating with the gambling could be a very stressful life situation. Most stressed people gain weight, which has happened to him. He's a smart player but you can't beat stress if you don't deal with it.
@@duracontractors so a multi millionaire snooker player is stressed out, my heart bleeds for him lols
Very true.
Alcohol
In my opinion these 2 greats are in top 5 in history with maybe Williams or Selby.Hendry 2nd and O'Sullivan 1st when all playing their best.
Hendry edges O'Sullivan imo
@@allthekingshorses7178 How?
Steve Davis is a professor of snooker. He is to snooker what Albert Einstein was to physics.
Higgins was playing so well in this match that I personally would beat him :) Scared, confused, quarreled with his wife or been partying days before.
Annoying thing about these long videos is when you want to watch a shot again so click back what you think is a few seconds or so, end up clicking back about 4 frames. Good to rewatch some of this though again
Nice win for Davis
Steve Davis face at 2:23:48 classic
I love snooker, but this is why I love 9 ball the most. 8 hours is too damn long!!!!
Cut it out kid!!
I heard John Higgins made a fortune on this match.
@@mikde-ye7pi Ah relax will ya I was only having a joke john is a good guy I like him.
8:22:15 Well missed John.
16 to 1 odds, someone made money. maybe a villa in Spain.
allthe same someone bet 10k then?
All hated in the 80s but loved him in his career twilight
Allways the case

Almost 9 hours for a snooker game?! You've got to take a day off to watch a match like that
Top game, top bloke - just gotta love The Nugget! :o)
This was brilliant. But look at that last frame and the bad shots and decisions Higgins made, you have to wonder, was that score line fixed?
