Yes, great shirt, indeed! Where is the long overdue Supertramp re-issue and hopefully box set for EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS? I can't be the only person out here who loves that album. Thanks for reviewing box set releases all year long. I ended up buying Elton John's HONKY CHATEAU 50th anniversary box set.
On December 8th Tull sets, Aquqlung, Minstrel in the Gallery, & Songs from The Wood. Got a rerelease, surprised they aren’t in your Top 10, absolutely great prices too.
Enjoyed this Barry. But I can't believe the Genesis BBC box or Lizzy's Live and Dangerous boxes did not make an appearance. Have a great Christmas....and maybe take a listen to our "Planet Marzipan" Marillion Podcast.
@@kingkillah101 I must agree with that. I remember the Springsteen set getting all the accolades back in the day, but when I walked into a record store in 1988 and saw the Tull set, I could not believe the treasure trove before my eyes. All those songs I had searched for in rare 45 RPM B-sides suddenly were in my hands...and then some!
Don't usually go for repackaged versions of old albums but I have Christmas expectations for the Tull box set. It's one of my favourite albums of all time even if I have bought it at least 4 times already!?!
The Zappa set includes 5.1, Atmos, and the original quadraphonic mix from the 70's. Add the 2 fantastic live shows with the studio goods and it's my top pick of the year! Best holiday wishes to you! Thanks!
With some box sets I ripped and made hard copies of the cds so as not to wreck the box/packaging (especially with the Tull box and I think one of the Marillion (Fish era) box sets is the same fragile plastic bits as the Tull box). Other big box sets I've put cds into plastic sleeves and put them into the cover (sometimes one has to trim the plastic sleeve and/or crop corners off the plastic sleeve in order to get them to fit). Probably the clam shell boxes are the most user friendly and seamless plastic sleeves fit in the clam shell box ok (less likely to scratch the cds than the card inners). The Sabbath box sets were ok, the sleeves inside the box are bigger than standard size and come with plastic inners for the cds. I have yet to find the perfect design for box sets, seems there is always some niggly element or fragile part to break or tear in them. Last year was a good one for Live album box sets. The Space Ritual box set by Hawkwind and the Live And Dangerous box set by Thin Lizzy were great! The Blackfield and Pineapple Thief sets were also good.
I would have included the reissued 40th Anniversary Tull boxed sets of Aqualung, Minstrel In The Gallery & Songs From The Wood which came out earlier this month.
I enjoy your videos very much. Im an American, but as you Brits say, you top 10 list was " Spot On!!" for the most part. There are many box sets in your top 10 that I also own and agree with most everything you said about them...I was unaware of the Moody Blues reisuue, I'll have to go look that one up. Again, thanks for all the high quality vids you make, and as you say , Stay well and safe and Continued Sucesss to you Sir!!
Thanks for your efforts this year. I loved the Broadsword box set but for me it was beaten by the reissued set of A Little Man, A House And The Whole World Window by Cardiacs. It’s a stunningly put together item and the remix and live cd’s are fantastic. Happy new year!
Yes, the Joni Mitchell set is outstanding. Two expanded re-issues that made the year for me were the Little Feat albums 'Sailin' Shoes' and 'Dixie Chicken'. I was tempted by the Zappa set but for the price the presentation should have been far better.
Broadsword, well deserved, also perhaps my most popular video this year. Your thumbnail briefly confused me. «Is he holding a Depeche Mode Record?!?» No, it was Marillion! 😄 God Jul, thank you for all the wonderful videos and all the reccomendations 🇩🇰😊🇳🇴
Great video. Jethro Tull's Broadsword box set is indeed fantastic. I really like the remix and the associated tracks. I was fortunate enough to purchase it as soon as it was released before the price gets hiked up. Well worth the money.
I agree that this is a great run down! The one thing I would love to see added is a "vinyl" version of this. I think the Broadsword vinyl is incredible, as is the Yes Album. I'd wonder about any others...for those of us who are only doing vinyl lately.
'Dog's bollocks re-mortgaging version'. Perfect! The Jethro Tull series has been incredible. A sleeper box set from 2023: Dialogo (Italy) has released a 10 disc box set (CD or vnyl) of every release on Brian Eno's short-lived Obscure records label from the '70s. I have the vinyl version, which comes in a clothbound case with a beautiful booklet, and all 10 albums with original sleeve art. I've played a few of these (starting with Eno's 'Discreet Music') and they're dead silent pressings. In no way rock music of course, but a motherlode for those into ambient/minimalism sounds.
WTF?! Did you say Broadsword was a five-disc set? It is actually an eight disc set, hence the ‘Monster’ moniker! Great video and glad to see Tull topping the list 🤘
I believe the Jethro Tull has 8 discs, 6 CDs & 2 DVDs. Also, I'm wondering, how's this more packed with Songs then the one by The Who? Or the book fuller of information? Just a little nitpick. They'd make my 1 & 2 also and having received "The Who Sell Out Super Deluxe" I asked myself why Bands are chosing a certain format. Those Who-Sets are hard to store.
As a huge Tull--ian, I love TB&TB, would love to have this set. A bit too steep for my musician's wage, but I pretty much have all the tracks from my lp and 20 years 5-lp set. I often wonder, with so many wonderful songs recorded for this session, why the actual release only had ten songs and its running time is one of the shortest Tull albums? Who knows!
echo some other people's comments by noting The 2 Little Feat Re-issues were great. Also, I just picked up Aretha Franklin's "A Portrait of the Queen 1970-1974 and it contains the 5 studio albums from this period, finally remastered (they sound great) and with bonus tracks. So that is "This Girl's In Love With You (1970, not a perfect record, but really excellent and one of the bonus tracks is her cover of "Fool on the Hill" which I quite enjoyed. "Spirit In the Dark, (1970)" a masterpiece, "Young, Gifted and Black (1972), ditto and "Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) (1973)" and "Let Me In Your Life. (1974)" The latter 2 are merely good but they of course have their moments.
Some great choices on the list. Definitely love Honky Chateau's 50th. Agree with Alice Cooper as both Killer and School's Out sound miles and miles better. Broadsword is one I need to pick up. I would add both Devo box sets (50 years of De-evolution and Art Devo 73-77 demos). Plus the fantastic Rush Signals 40th box set.
Cheers for that review, there is a couple on there I would like to get a hold of. Some I already have. Some of the Tull boxes have been great (some more extensive than others, more discs, more live stuff etc). In general good value for money, matched only by the likes of the KC box sets of a few years ago and those you mentioned on Cherry Red Records tend to be cheaper releases (the Zappa ones have been great in many instances, but have imho been very expensive, somewhat overpriced).
£60 - £70 for the Zappa Overnite Sensation box set….I should be so lucky! Amazon and eBay each have the five disc set retailing at £99.99, while the vinyl costs around £54.00. Oh but wait, there’s free shipping on all orders….
Thanks for the list video. Agree with the Who, Alice Copper and Yes. Love the Tull boxes but not a big fan of that album. Would add the 2 Little Feat reissues commented on and A Space in Time by Ten Years After the late 50th anniversary reissue with both a new remix and remaster of the original mix. They’ve not truly box sets but still great reissues. The Floyd box was incredibly overpriced with no new music I didn’t already get from the immersion reissues in 2011. Agree that the Tull reissues set the high bar. The 5 I have look like a library in my CD display.
One of the best box sets out there is airborne by Camel 26 CD's and five blu rays there are three 5.1 mixes of the first album Mirage and the Snow Goose, and Nude the blu ray is concert footage. The CD's cover their discography from 73 to 84, there is a ton of live material also, and a very nice hardback book, the set can be bought for around £160 which is fantastic value.
If you have the individual remasters it's not worth it. The remasters don't sound noticeably any different, the book is just a large copy of what's in the individual booklets, word for word, same photos. Only the surround sound is new, that makes it very expensive for not much. Also you don't get original cover replica which is disappointing. It's a very disappointing set, if you have remasters it's just not worth the money, you have it already. Very, very disappointing.
You know your getting "past it" when you have no clue what Blue Ray is? I will continue to polish my 78,s and am radio and my valved black and white tv thankyou.( valves are a buggar to get now though)
The Steve Wilson remix...It is just an opinion but I feel any remix of these recorded artifacts are just box set fillers only, and feel a slight desecration with already well recorded albums.
I'm not against the idea of boxed sets with unreleased material and remixes but these should cover production costs only and the fans who engorged the artists and record labels bank balances the first time around shouldn't be asked to pick up the tab for what is repackaging of old music they are being to pay for twice, thrice and four times over
None of these are essential waste of money 💰 if you have the cash then splash but why buy same old same old old mens fodder rather spend my hard earned on new stuff that keeps me interested moving forward i mean cmon value for money? 😂
What about the amazing John Wetton box set “An Extraordinary Life” ??? You featured it just before it’s official release saying how wonderful it is then it doesn’t even make your Top 10 or the honorable mentions 😢😢😢

Of course, Broadsword deserves the top spot. Tull box sets are real bar-raisers. The new template for what box sets should aspire to.
1988's "20 Years of..." 5 lp set from JT arguably set the standard for the modern box set anyhow!
@@kingkillah101 I must agree with that. I brought so many box sets..a lot of the ones you have showcased here. I love buying CD box sets. Look forward to more in 2024.❤
Don't usually go for repackaged versions of old albums but I have Christmas expectations for the Tull box set. It's one of my favourite albums of all time even if I have bought it at least 4 times already!?!
Thanks for another wonderful years worth of great show's, have a great Christmas and New year. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
I bought Family reissues this year, but that was about it.
Classic Album Review - I thoroughly enjoy your review videos. I'm an old guy yet I learn a whole lot watching your videos.
